- Merrell Agility Peak 5 full in-depth review. Here it is folks, the full review you've all been asking about. I really enjoyed my first outing in the Merrell Agility Peak 5 and it reminded me of one of my favourite trail running shoes of all time, the brilliant Hoka Speedgoat 3. I've run around 70 miles in them now, including a couple of long efforts in the mountains of Chamonix and they really have continued to impress!
Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

Nice. I'll keep them on my radar for when they go on sale!!
Love my agility peak 5s. Best trail shoes I’ve had for a long time. Have been particularly impressed with the outsole and traction.
Love these shoes, definitely "shoe of the year" for me. Will be wearing them in the UTMB Kullammenen 100 miles coming up. Seriously considering the GoreTex boot version for winter running here in Sweden
Really looking forward to picking up a pair of these 🤓
thank you for this review! well done! very helpful!!
No worries, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 🙏😁
Last 3 shoe purchases I had are all because of your reviews! Hahaha this gon be the 4th one. Thanks Lloyd!
Another great video and a shoe I’d love to try. Thanks Loyd. Dear Merrell, can we please have a wide fit for this shoe, pleeeeeasssse.
I had a similar love for the speedgoat 4 and have been trying to find a replacement ever since. Closest thing I’ve found for performance (with better durability) is the speedland gs:tam. I’d love to see a review on that one. That being said, i may give this Agility Peak 5 a go because it looks and seems to perform like the speedgoat but maybe has a midsole that’ll last longer. Great review, thanks!
Going to pick up the goretex versions soon!
Great review, ended up picking these up off of your first impressions video. People: don’t be fooled by the lack of marketing from Merrell. These shoes top any others in their category. Foam is better than any Speedgoat (the durometer is perfect for trail running) the outsole absolutely blows away the Xodus Ultra. Durability has been fantastic so far. It’s my first Merrell shoe but it won’t be my last. In the US you also get 20% off your first purchase from the Merrell site so I got these for $112, and I’m anticipating getting 400+ miles out of them. Love the shoe, and never would’ve tried it if not for the channel. Thanks Loyd
Came here to say the exact same thing 😂. Speedgoat and xodus ultra included.
and this is the kind of shoes you want to stock, like 5 or 6 pairs just in case they mess up with the 6, like most company tend to do.
Would this shoe also work as an everyday /all-day casual walking/hiking shoe on steep/uneven hard rocky/cobblestone paths which get super slippery when wet.
Again great job in the review! I would like to add that testing them on the mountains is very important for durability especially for that forefoot upper bend point. Compared to the Xodus Ultra 2s, my upper just got destroyed after my 51k mountain race though I loved the shoe, but a 100km durability is just not good. I will definitely be checking the Peak 5 for my May 100k ultra race! Thanks again Loyd
My XU2 upper got trashed at Val D' Aran 55k that was very rocky. Saucony refunded me. Great shoe but the upper needs some work
never tried Merrell ... yet... great review!
Good review Loyd I picked up the Merrell Moab flight on a whim for £45 and they’re really good they do make good hiking boots as well so they know what they’re doing! Any chance you got your hands on the Craft pure trail!!
Hey Loyd.
Great review again and would be very tempted but as I've just bought peregrine's...... Just out of curiosity - what is your foot width. Would be interesting to know what fits for you might fit me / others? 👊🏻
Great review. Whats is the width compared to the xodus ultra 1? love that shoe but the grip on wet rocks is shocking.
It's all about the rock plate 👍🏼. Great review ✌🏽.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video 🙏😊
I bought a Merrel agility peak 5 to run my first ultra ... 55 km ... You convinced me...
The Agilty Peak 5 is an expensive shoe here in Norway but I was finally able to get the GTX version at an affordable price. I took it out on a first run in fairly technical terrain as well as some compact terrain and it performed very well as far as comfort, cushioning, protection and stability is concerned. I had to go up from a UK 8 in size to a UK 8.5 as the toe box was rather narrow. I'm looking forward to testing it on a variety of terrain but my first impression of the shoe is very positive so far!
Hi Loyde
I like the planted feel of Akasha 2s and most recently the Peregrine 12.
However The drop, lugs and fit of the Agility peak sound good but once I tried some Hokas on and it felt like I was standing on a big squishy cloud.
Do you think the Agility peak would be similar as if so I may stick to the Akasha 2s or maybe the Exodus Ultra
I love the NB summit unknown v4 and got one from you and one of your tech T-shirts as I love the shoe so much. However been looking for something for longer days out post spinal surgery with a bit more cushion. I love NBs as I like ground feel and they are a nice balance but would this be a nice option for something to rehab in? I have extremely narrow feet and the NB is the first shoe I’ve not had to size down in to get a good lock down and fit in the toe box. I’m hoping from what you’ve said they could be? 🤞 thank you!
Great Loyd , Great Merrell
What would you choose between the Merrill and your Xodus ultra 2’s? Thanks
wow… since i cant find any evo speedgoats anymore, probably will be getting this shoe… loved all the comments❤
Amazing review. Cool to see a more unknown brand make such an amazing shoes.
How's the with compared to the Hoka speed goat?
It's almost an identical fit compared to the Speedgoat 3 👍
shoes are state of art .. really I havent seen any shoes which is so effortlessly and lightly quality and durable. (all others are heavy and chunky).
Hi Lloyd great video as always. I'm not sure you've done a video on the subject, however, what are your views on Gore Tex versions of trail trainers? I was eyeing these up but not sure weather to go for standard or Gore Tex? based in the UK.
Cheers J.
I've spoke about it several times on the channel, I'm not really a fan of Gore-Tex running shoes. If you get water in the shoe it's pretty much impossible to get it out and you do loose some breathability in the upper. Hope this helps and thanks for watching, 🙏😊
Great review and i make the order at a great price for 80 euros
Good review I had the MTL Long Sky's absolutely fantastic shoes until they fell appart after only 100k hopefully they've improved the uppers durability
Would u recommend them over the Mafate 4s? Great video as always!
I'd personally choose the Agility Peak 5. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏😊
I do really like this shoe. I do think I need to go a half size up though. I'm a 10 in Inov 8 Trail Talons but in these I get big toe rub when there is prolonged undulating trail. The toe box just feels a little narrower than I am used to
Did going half size up solved the issue? I bought a pair and it's too narrow for me in my usual size. Considering a return but if sizing up solves the issue I'd like to keep the shoe.
Great review. These look great but fear they may be too narrow for me. I'm a wide fit in New Balance and Hoka so figure these will be too narrow. Must try some out though.
If you're a wide fit in a NB ahoe, you'll probably struggle with the fit of the Agility Peak 5 🤔
@@Run4Adventure it's a problem for sure. I am hoping that Topo get their new Uk distributor sorted as the Mountain Racer 3 looks like it could be the ideal shoe for people like me! Keep up the great work pal.
@@marsh3tk Thanks, will do 👍
Hello, voglio cambiare le mie saucony peregrine 13 con queste merrel, con le saucony mi son trovato bene, possono essere simili come scarpe? Distanza corta. Grazie
Helpful information about the agility peak 5. Like from 🇪🇸. Have a great day. ⛰️🏃🏞️
just ordered some of these and the speed cross 6. a fair few of the customer reviews complain about the durability of the Agility 5, saying the colours and even the sides of the soles get damaged really easy. sometimes the eyelets have gotten torn, one customer mentions experiencing this just over 50 miles. i am thinking about ordering the Thundercross and decide between the 3 between sending 2 back.
I really wasn’t a fan of the Speedcross 6 when I tested them out. It was lacking cushioning in the midsole and the heel felt too high for a trail running shoe! I’ve run over 400 miles in my first pair of Agility Peak 5’s and they’re still going strong! The sides of the midsole can get a bit damaged but it doesn’t affect the performance of the shoes at all. I haven’t had any eyelet issues with my two pairs 🤷♂️ Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
How do they compare with merrell agility peak 4? Thanks
Loyd you have convinced me...I' m going to buy it. Same size of Speedgoat 3?
I use to run the Speedgoat 3 in a UK 10 and I've got the Agility Peak 5 in a uk9.5 and it fits great 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
Nice review 👍 i can't find this near me, so i probably have to purchase online. What about the width? I always have to get 2E shoes, not sure if this pair is roomy... any advise?
The Agility Peak 5 isn't the widest shoe in the world. If you normally need a 2E you might struggle 🤔
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
My Loyd specials arrived today and Christ they are comfortable. No wonder the reviews are good
I’m glad you like them Chris, happy running 😁
@@Run4Adventure Loyd I’ve not managed to run these on the pendeen to st ives section yet. I ran it in saucony peregrine 13 st. (Great in mud but shite grip on anything solid and wet). would you say these merrells are up to the task for this section with its 5mm tread for this weekend with the recent rain we’ve had. Initially I was going to use the peregrine st for this section due to the 6.5mm tread.
@@chrisagnew1988 I’ll be using the Merrells for the Pendeen section. The 5mm lug is pretty’s good in the muddy stuff and the Vibram megagrip is brilliant on wet rock. I’m not a fan of the Peregrine ST, good in the mud but the deeper lug is pretty slippy on wet rock 👍
@@Run4Adventure you’ve put my mind at rest. Thank you and good luck on the 100 💪🏼
@@chrisagnew1988 No worries, best of luck to you too 👍😁
What if you run on asphalt in them?
I've tried a few different Hokas and they've all been uncomfortable due to the sidewalls on the instep (yeah I pronate a bit so that exaggerates the issue) any potential similar issues with the Merrells?
That can be a common issue with Hokas if you over pronate when running. It's hard to say but you're not sat down in the Agility Peak 5 midsole as much as you would be in some Hoka models 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
Grabbed a pair of these after your first impression video. I think it's the first pair of trail shoes I actually like the look of! Ordered my usual size and these were too small. Very surprised as even had people say to go down half a size. I went up half a size and had heel slippage issues. Gutted as these seem absolutely perfect for my needs. Picked up the Xodus ultra 2 this week instead under your recommendation and trying them out for my first run this weekend
I found them true to size Tom, like I said in the video 👍
My problem with the true to size is for example Xodus ultra in UK 8 is a EU 42.5 where as the Merrell UK 8 is a EU 42... So definitely smaller than the Xodus for example
Thanks for this. I' curently thinking about these. How the drop feels? I'm woried because I saw somewhere that it's actually like 13 mm, not 6. and I can not try them on, just order. I could only try salomon sense ride 5. I loved it, except the toebox was too narrow for me
The Agility Peak 5 definitely doesn’t have a 13mm heel off set! I don’t know of any running shoes that have a 13mm drop? 🤷♂️ I’m really not a fan of a high heel off set so if that was the case I wouldn’t be running in them. However if you feel the Rude was to narrow you’ll probably think the same about the Agility Peak 5 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
@@Run4Adventure thank you! I paused my search for a while.
I really love this look, but if so, I'm gonna aim for the Wave Mujin 10 or the Catamount 3.
Do you plan to review them?
Loyd, may I ask if this is good for road running as well? Or will road running ruin the lugs? Thanks!
Road running in a trail shoe is always going to wear the lugs down quicker. You tend to find the grippy rubber on a trail shoe is softer than the rubber they put on road running shoes. The Merrell Agility Peak 5 runs well on the road but that Vibram outsole would wear down quickly 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
Hi loyd what about if compare with Mafate speed 4?Better or?
I prefer the Agility Peak 5 over the Mafate Speed 4's, both great shoes though 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
Size wise how is the length?
I have the XU2 in size 46 (29.5cm) and they fit perfect. I also bought Hoka SG5 same size 46 (29.5cm) and they felt smaller and returned them as definitely my big toes would have hurt during descents.
I’m a uk9.5 in the XU2 and the Agility Peak 5 and they both fit well. I go up to a uk10 in the SG5 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
how does it drain? that extended toe-bumper looks quite retaining.
The upper has been good when it comes to drainage, I've had no issues at all 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏
I've schreded an eyelet after only 100 km. Very thin material around the eyelets. Otherwise, splendid shoe!
Oh no! I’d contact Merrell that shouldn’t happen. I’ve got over 400 miles in my first pair and they’re still going strong, maybe yours were faulty? 🤔
Sold
Anyone know about the toe box on these please? I normally need quite a wide one
I wouldn’t say it wide Mathew. I’ve got quite a narrow foot shape and it fits really well. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍🙂
Xthis or the xudos?? 19/02 I got a pair of these , good trainer and great grip . not as good an allrounder as the Xudos IMO
There’s a comparison video between the Xodus Ultra 2 and the Agility Peak 5 👍
czcams.com/video/JQvBp85yGZc/video.htmlsi=FC2dJFPxJuAP5JrE
How is the toe box width compared to the saucony xodus ultras?
I'd say the Agility Peak 5 is slightly narrower than the Xodus Ultra but it's very slight 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
@@Run4Adventuremany thanks. It looks great. Am I correct in assuming it has much better grip than the xodus ultra due to the vibram megagrip?
How does it compare to agility peak v4?
Unfortunately I haven't run in the Agility Peak 4 so it's hard to say? Sorry I can't help but thanks for watching 👍
Got these based on the great reviews but just couldn’t get the heal to lockdown, whatever I did I could always pull the heal off full laced. A real shame as they seemed to promise so much.
That's such a shame 😔
That's the thing with running shoes, the fit is so personal and what works for one might not work for another. Sorry they didn't work out for you 👍
I exchanged them for the women’s version and the fit is perfect! Did a 26k commute in them straight out of the box, what a shoe!
@@patricksaunders2674 That's awesome to hear Patrick! 👍😊
@@patricksaunders2674how does the women's differ?
How this shoe will be different from Merrel Nova 3 (clay model) ? I am tempted to buy latter but happy to be conscious of other choices
They are similar in construction. I guess the biggest difference is the Agility Peak 5 has a slightly deeper and more aggressive lug pattern. Also the Agility Peak 5 uses Vibram MEGAGRIP rubber which is brilliant but the Nova 3 uses different Vibram rubber. I’ve run in a couple of Merrell trail shoes that used a different rubber from Vibram and the grip in the wet was terrible! I’d personally go for the Agility Peak 5, it’s a great shoe 👍
@@Run4Adventure thank you very much .. just one last question - is it wise to consider ON shoes for running/walking. I see a good hype around it, but skeptical. Just last valuable advice .. thank you 😊
@@Aditya15_12 I’m not a fan of On shoes if I’m honest 🤔
Hello. Are these sneakers suitable for the city or can they be worn comfortably in daily life?
You can wear any trainer for daily life but these are trail running shoes 👍
@@Run4Adventure Thank you very much. I liked the shoes very much, but it seems difficult for me to wear them for their intended purpose in the near future.
How well do they drain/dry?
I ran them I some super wet conditions and they drained really well John 👍
They must of come a long way since the O.G
They have come along way Todd. I tried out some of their earlier trail running shoes and they were pretty bad! 😔
Should we go half a size up?
I didn’t go up in size Mike, I’ve got my standard uk9.5 I the Agility peak 5’s and they fit really well 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
Can i use a trail running shoes for concrete running?
You can use trail shoes on the concrete but you will wear the outsole lugs down a lot quicker 👍
@@Run4Adventure thank you, i asked bcuz im going to a place near a mountain with a bit of hiking with my friends problem is thats the only time im gonna use that trail shoes so i guess im going for a running shoes and use my old walking shoes for the trip, cant buy both :)
what are the d rings for?
It’s a gaiter attachment 👍
It’s ok for hot weather or not
I haven’t had any issues running in hot weather in the Agility Peak 5 👍😁
The weight hurts my eyes though..
The XODUS 2 was a fail for me. Clunky and cheap feeling. Maybe this one is better?
I've never found the Xodus Ultra 2 to feel clunky or cheap Ian, sorry to hear they didn't work for you 😔

They're pretty narrow Rob 😔
What do you recommend for wider feet?
is it idiotic to wear this trail shoes on normal city road walking/running?i'm no expert, i bought them because i found them cheap compared to other stores, last pair for like 70$...but idk now, i dont have many offroad options, seems i made mistake.beside that they are fine,comfortable...
