    • @TXTypewriter
      @TXTypewriter Před 5 lety

      It was errata'd later on, to deal 1d10+9 damage instead of 2d10+5, and have a rate of fire of S/3/- instead of S/2/4 if I recall correctly, meaning the newer versions generally did less damage and at a slower rate of fire.This was in part done because Bolters were more powerful than Plasma Guns even for killing heavily armored troops, especially if you loaded them with Kraken or Vengeance bolts. Bolters are still some of the most useful weapons in the game even with the nerf, as they're still very powerful and highly versatile.

Had the iconic scene in Dirty Harry happened in space, many geeks would without batting an eyelid have been able to tell Clint exactly how many shots were fired. Hello Arch.
    Unlike most players, I both did the numbers, AND was an Enlisted Weapons Instructor in the United States Marine Corps. A 0.75 calibur round is 19.01mm, so your generalization of it being a 20mm grenade launcher is fairly accurate.
    The Bolt fired is definitely projected out of the barrel of the weapon by an explosive charge like gunpowder. And once free of the weapon, the gyro-jet rockets built into the base of the round fire up and thrust it even faster to it's target.
    This explains the relatively short range of a Space Marine's weapons fire on the tabletop, since the 'powder' charge is only large enough to get the round out of the weapon, and the gyro-jet rockets have only enough fuel for a relatively short duration flight. Plus the mass of the round is fairly hefty, and thus once the explosive charge and rocket fuel are expended, air resistance would sharply limit it's range.
    Once the round reaches it's target, it's adamantium tip enables it to penetrate almost any kind of armor, for the most part, and a delayed action fuse causes the enclosed explosive charge to fire, shredding the round inside it's target, doing the maximum possible damage to it.
    A similar weapon is already available. The NEOPUP PAW 20mm Rifle. czcams.com/video/xsBEQ-Pulvc/video.html

    5:30 ehhh not really .75 caliber isn't really as big as people think. 12 gauge shotgun fires .684 caliber shells. and that's just a shotgun. HE rounds are pretty awesome but they dont have anywhere near the impact of a grenade round. High Explosive rounds are usually made to explode, with the force of the explosion killing or wounding the enemy. however the exsplosion will almost always be pretty self contained. where a grenade either from a launcher or thrown is meant to hit many targets with similar or greater force.
    Its actually like 18mm round but yeah that is overkill
    How Bolt rounds have AP, HE, and Shrapnel. This is fucking magic, heavy AP with HE is more detrimental than anything, as you will often (should) get moments where your Bolt round fly's through a person and dosnt have anywhere near the effect especially given the caliber your more than likely going to experience over penetration more often than anything else without the AP with it your likely to put a clean bolt round sized hole in your enemy but they are likely going to keep fighting since unless you hit something vital they likely wont even notice it do to how fast it happened. it really should just be HE and it would be very effective HE rounds typically are, but it carries the risk of your ammunition getting hit and cooking off to much more detrimental effects you than normal ammo.
    dont get me started on the Gyro jet 2nd stage of the weapon. severe heating from the barrel would warp the bullets on the exiting of the barrel combined with the gyro jet would reduce your accuracy stupidly.
    *The space marines do have special bolt rounds for stalker bolters that dont have the Gyro jet and they would work just fine.* but the standard round would not function in reality.
    .75 caliber would not rip off someone's arm you can look up a video of people firing .90 caliber rifles.
    You would not have to miniaturize the bolter the barrel and mechanisms wouldn't be that large. if anything you would have to scale the holding parts and grip for the marine but even than not by that much. honestly a human variant of a bolter just add a stock to it and if you really feel the need give the man a bit more of padding where his stock is going to go and after some training he wont notice the kick nearly as much. as that area of his body would increase in density do to the consistent hits to it. as a result the human body will try to compensate for the consistent force by increasing the density of that section of his body *look up density training* its really fascinating and their are people who use steal poles as punching bag's from the training.
    As always its Science Fantasy so at the end of the day. Its designed to be cool and it does achieve that if nothing else, I just wish more research on guns was done before they came up with this weapon.
    As always great video arch looking forward to the next one.

      Propably not for the best to compare current theory to bolters of the 40th millennium, as their resources and progress will be greater as a given. People in the imperium cared about bolters and smoothed out the problems and had the resources to do so, unlike the under funded company that designed the gyro jet firearm.

    • @irontemplar6222
      @irontemplar6222 Před 5 lety

      @@josephellis8501 what are you talking about. The gyrojet guns IRL had the issue of at short range it wouldn't be leathal speed.
      The problem is the Bolt round is a combination of a bullet and a gyrojet round. From rapid heating of a barrel bullets tend to warp in their chambers because of the intense heat, however with normal bullets this does that effect accuracy that much since their method of propulsion only happens once. It does reduce the accuracy of the bullet but not enough for anyone to care. But with the two stage system of a bolter round that warped bullet might shoot out at a 90 degree angle once it fires because the warping will move the location of the interior rocket in any direction that the bullet happens to warp your accuracy goes to shit after just a few shots due to the heat.
      And before anyone brings up "oh they might have advanced X" 1. I checked they said they just used steel for this boltgun and dueteariam for some reason. But 2. Because the way high explosive rounds work you need the metal to be made at a very specific thickness to make the explosive actully useful too thick while you might solve the warping problem the bolt on impact will destroy itself you wont get any boom if any at all depending on how thick you make it or if you use the wrong material. Too thin and it exsplode outward to much and you wont get any penetration out if it and if they are wearing good armor your bolt rounds will need to repeatedly hit them to strip the armor. Now the thickness and material used matters in the bolt round rocket nozzle will shift ever so slightly if the barrel is cold when firing it because the kinetic impact of being launched will shift it ever so slightly, over later when the barrel is heated which will shift it significantly to the point it might fly of in a 90 degree direction once the rocket kicks on. And all of this is assuming your firing this on earth in ideal temperatures and no wind the second you start applying these things the aim gets even worse to the point where their is a chance a very very small chance that your own bullet might fly back 180 degrees and hitting yourself with it.

    One of the more terrifying aspects of the bolt round would be the effect of hydrostaic pressure from the explosion in a body would cause micro-tears to the surrounding tissue and internal bleeding. Had some time on my hands and thinking about bolters. Skipping the detonator charge in the round and use the heat and flame as the ignition source for the HE might be best, it would only work on medium to hard impact. Does limit the range, but simplifies manufacturing, reduces fail rate for explosion, and potentially gets a better spread pattern for shrapnel.

    So I was thinking, if bolters, or at least some bolters are about .75 cal they would be roughly the same size as a 12 gauge shotgun which equals .729 cal. Considering that frag-12 rounds are a thing as well as automatic shotguns like the AA-12 and Saiga-12, aside from the armor penetrating delay-fuses and rocket assist on bolts, don't we already kind of have bolters? Granted an AA-12 loaded with frag-12 isn't going to be punching through any amount of armor, but soft targets are going to have a really, really bad time.

      Usually between 3 and 8 mags depending on mission. Space Marines and their doctrine are not designed for protracted engagements but instead lightning fast hits at vital targets to collapse enemy command and fighting ability. Large scale warfare is the IG's thing and despite how it is often portrayed Astartes usually fight as part of a larger Imperial force that takes the brunt of the fighting while the Marines act as surgical kill machines. Even when a chapter goes it alone it's with thousands of support personnel in the form of serfs and fleet assets.
      This paired with their superhuman abilities means that combat missions are short and brutal and resolve long before logistics become a major factor barring extreme circumstances.

    As many have pointed out, the Boltgun and its ammunition are just improved Gyrojets. It is quite possible to make a functioning bolter with modern technology--and that would be usable by a normal human (since the technology to make Adeptus Astartes is a bit ahead of us). You can even make your bolter and bolt ammunition using components available to any citizen of a free country. I'm not going to go into details on how to do so, since I don't want to end up on even more government watchlists or encourage some kid to try something that blows his hands off (since experimenting with different, unreferenced loads can be dangerous). But if you have access to .50 BMG cartridge casings, a reloading bench, and know a bit about solid-fuel rockets, you can easily make a functioning boltgun-type weapon.
    Fabricating a fuze that will detonate the round _inside_ a target will be much harder, though, although making a simple impact or timed fuze isn't too difficult and may achieve the desired result. Now, if you're wondering why militaries all over the world don't do this, and why no firearm manufacturer has tried it, it's because in our current world, a boltgun, even one built to 40K standards, would offer next to no advantage over the small arms we already have. Your improvised boltgun will allow you to fire some very large rounds with minimal recoil (since most of the velocity will come from the propelling charge), but it will be an *inaccurate* weapon firing very expensive ammo that could possibly explode in the chamber or magazine with unpleasant results.
    Now, what *would* be an amazing weapon in our world today is the humble Lasgun. If you somehow acquired the knowledge and materials to build one of those and its power packs, you'd either become very wealthy or very dead quickly as governments and defense contractors everywhere will want your knowledge (and some may kill you to prevent their rivals from finding out). A rifle that weighs about as much as a loaded M4A1 Sopmod, hits harder than .308 (lasgun bolts can shear arms off normal humans and even pierce weak spots in power armour), has zero recoil, _and_ has ammunition that you can refill just by leaving it in the sun or tossing it in a campfire?!
    Come to think of it, how does any trained Guardsman manage to miss his target with a lasgun?! With better tactics (i.e. true combined arms), slightly better heavy weapons (i.e. plentiful ATGM and tactical nukes), there really wouldn't be much need for the Astartes since the Imperial Guard would be able to steamroll anything outside of the Eye of Terror.
    If I could choose to own any weapon from any sci-fi universe, I wouldn't want a bolter or even a lightsaber. No, my choice would be a lasgun and some power packs, or even just a laspistol. Besides, such a weapon wouldn't be legally considered a "firearm" under any country's laws, so I can take it anywhere in the world and just claim it's a toy :P.
