Space Marines wield some of those most powerful and reliable weapons ever created by the imperium of man. from guns that fire rocket propelled grenades to vicious energy weapons that cause the target to burst into flames inside their armor. and a lot of these weapons have variants that are twice as big, heavy and powerful! what's better than a flamer? a double barreled flamer of course! let's take a look at some of the biggest guns a space marine can wield barehanded.

Been enjoying Majorkill and your WH 40K lore, yours is refreshing. Get to some Tyranid Units/Hive Fleets that haven't been discussed to death, if possible in the future.
Hey weshammer can you do a video about the imperial navy ships?
Greta vid one thing though.
8:29 promethium does not ignite when exposed to air, it needs to be ignited that’s why all flame weapons have igniters fitted to them. It does burn hottest when in an oxygen rich environment and is easily ignited by the smallest source of ignition.
Also in the book “Warlord: Fury of the God Machine” there is a continent sized lake of promethium that was not burning until chaos set it alight.
"historically accurate gameplay"
call Axis "Raven"
Do they have mortars
Fun fact: the principle of volkite weapons is called deflagaration. We use this principle in all firearms and internal combustion engines.
Ahhh fellow gun owner
The only principle that is needed is faith. Apply the holy ointments, burn the holy incense and say the correct words of encouragement and it should work.
The important thing is what they make deflagrate, lmao
@@ianpartrick8347 I agree, DeflateGate didn't have a satisfying conclusion...
Big respect for the avatar :]
The Lasgun is basically the equivalent of a real world LMG in a far more portable package. It’s also very reliable and easy to use, in addition to having great ammo capacity and being relatively durable. And keep in mind, this is the mass-produced standard-issue of your average guardsman. The only thing that makes the “flashlight” comparison even somewhat accurate is how tough most of the enemies Mankind goes up against in the 41st millennium.
Yeah but given this is 40.000 years into the future, the Lasgun is not impressive.
@@MinhNGUYEn-uq2nt What you have to remember is that threats like Chaos Space Marines are relatively rare. One of most prevalent threats to the Imperium is the threat of Chaos cults. These armies, while sometimes supported by traitor Astartes, are comprised of human militias and warbands. The Lasgun will absolutely devastate human flesh, having a rough energy equivalent to a 50. cal.
As well as this, Lasguns are decently effective against the basic infantry of the Tyranids- like Hormagaunts.
And even so, maybe a Lasgun is not so powerful. Alone, a guardsman will not do much damage to a Chaos Space Marine or a squad of Orks. But a Guardsman is never alone. One lasgun won't do much, three hundred of them will.
True, but you have to remember that mankind has lost much of its advanced technology since their fall from grace. Also, the Astra Militarum (aka Imperial Guard) number in the billions at the very least, and need a cost-efficient, reliable weapon to arm their numbers with. Also, specialized weapons are used when the situation warrants it. For example: flamers, plasma guns, melta guns, etc.
Logistically speaking, a rifle that can recharge ammo by sticking it in a fire is just beyond incredible.
@@ShaggyGotSauce , lasguns are closer to .338 Lapua Magnum, while .50 BMG is bolter or heavy stubber level.
Just to put this out into the world, if a H.Bolter fires a 100cal round, that is the equivelant to a 25.4mm bullet, which is the cannon round used by the M242 25mm Chaingun that you can find on the US M2 Bradley IFV as its main gun. That essentially means that one Astartes with a H.bolter has the same destructive fire power as a full ass Modern infantry fighting vehicle.
As a headcannon I like the idea that melta and multimelta guns are in fact a bunch of different technologies that produce much the same effect, and being the luddites that they are the imperium just went with a common name for "gun what makes things hot"
In my mind the Melter has always been something like an Oxygen cutting Torch, just with burstfire instead of a continuous cutting flame
Melta weapons are basically current technology plasma weapons.
That fits very well with how I know them from the ciaphus cain books: firing a blinding burst of superheated energy that can melt nearly everything
@@jonathanathor117
you are most certainly on to something.🤔
-oxy acethelene torch> meltagun(promethium and oxygen mixture as fuel with added pressurized system)
-plasma cutter> plasmagun(plasma and oxygen mixture as fuel, with added pressurized system)
-lighter>flamer(promethium as fuel with added pressurized system)
i like to think that those bigger backpacks on the back of devastator squads are not just for fuel but also use the pressure output of their reactors for the pressure system

In the Space Crusade game, in it's addon "Mission Dreadnought" you can find on page 8 of the rulebook a simple artwork of a Space Marine firing a Conversion Beamer.
I have a theory about meltas and krak grenades. I think their names are Ork in origin, and were given to them by the Orks based on what they do (melt things and crack armour, respectively). Whatever names they had before these were long, weird-sounding, and/or hard to pronounce, so the humans using them eventually started using the easy, practical Ork terminology for them, and it stuck.
I like that!
"Oi! Da humies got meltas"
I honest to God thought metlas where in the family of shootas and choppas. Took me months to eventually get it that the nuns with guns love their holy trio.
I always loved how since second edition the Imperial Guard had a team of two or three Guardsmen manning a Heavy Bolter or Lascannon on wheels or a tripod, while a single Space Marine Devestator squad member just runs around the battlefield with one of these heavy weapons.
Love the video you did with majorkill and great sportsmanship bro!!!!
I hope it becomes a regular game.

I really kinda liked the Shotgun visual for the Melta in the Space Marine game The idea of it shooting a ring of Super heated plasma is kinda cool to me.
I always liked to imagine the meltagun shoots a ring and whatever was unfortunate enough to be in that ring is just vaporised.

MOAR COLLABS
Heavy bolters are kinda weird.
Some may say it's a 1 inch caliber, others may argue it's a .998.
But ALL official artwork shows heavy bolters having can sized rounds of at least 2 inches or more.
In Ephrael Stern comic, a bolter hits and causes an effect very similar to an RPG
That Reddit post I mentioned in the video made some really good points. 100 caliber round is ridiculous, but the astartes are 8 ft tall and their guns are huge, so even a bullet of that size coming out of it just doesn't make sense considering the dimensions of the bolters barrel.
@@weshammer
Well, 40k is made with a "rule of cool"
I know it doesn't make much sense, like how you fit 30 .75 bolts in those magazines.
And artwork, like black library, suffers of the same problem as having so many authors with different visions.
Add to that the ONLY size GW has given is about an Astartes bolter, even sisters have no official size.
And they're useless in the game.
Some say it's a cal 100. Others that it's the size of a fist. All we know is...
It will keel!
@@weshammer I always figured that what we’re seeing extruding from bolters isn’t exactly the barrel, it’s a muzzle brake. And that’s the reason for the disparity.
Now I want to see someone kitbash or model a plasma canon heavy weapons team for the imperial guard
That would be pretty cool, but since there are no official rules for such a thing, it couldn’t be used on the tabletop unless someone came up with homebrew rules for it and played somewhere that allowed such things.
I mean if you don't want a rule stick up your arse and you have a spare model to be used as a tech priest that needs to be model to model to the plasma team or else risk explosion
I will always love Jurgern’s Melta Gun. It may not be as big as a Astartes Melta gun but it’s still awesome.
What about a deep dive into the combat strategies of the different factions from each alien race to individual space marine chapters?
For me I'm torn. On one hand the lascannon. Simple powerful laser cannon.
On the other as I look at my ten man heavy bolter support squad I think "more dakka" and the Orky side come out
The truth without some sort of cannon your desire for dakka will be unquenchable. I would never use one lascannon myself as this throws off my perception of dakka. Do I want a dakka lightshow or dakka barrage? The question is always answered by plasmacannons
@@benoliver5593 wait I gotz a guy idea! Hav em all and have all the dakka!
Why not 2 lascannons 1 optional other weapon and the rest heavy bolters??
Appreciate you being a straight up Chad in donating to the sea turtles brother. Finished watching the tag team with Majorkill!
Turtles won!
YEH!
If promethium ignites on contact with oxygen why do most flamers have an igniter under the barrel
Because the lore has never been 100% consistent if I'm being honest. And most of the artwork in my videos is fan art, So there's always a little bit of artist interpretation
Astartes often fight in situations where there's no oxygen. Presumably it has some sort of internal mechanism since it burns underwater apparently till its all used up, and the igniter is necessary for such situations. As to why they don't keep it off to conserve fuel... eh. Its hardly the biggest waste of resources they do. They probably just think it looks cool.
Oh yeah new Wes video. I love your content man, you've really sucked me into the lore with how you present your content. The story about the sisters brought an actual tear to my eye
This video deserves a few, choice entries from "Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries," from the Schlock Mercenary webcomic, by Howard Taylor. 😁

8:35 The problem with flamethrowers is our skewed modern perception because of Hollywood. In the film industry, it's illegal to use liquid fed flamethrowers. So all the ones we see on screen and safe, gas fed versions.
These pale in comparison to high pressure liquid flamethrowers in stopping power. Imagine a fire hose on full, which can knock people down and push them around like rag-dolls. It's like that, but also burning hot enough to flash-boil blood.
In ww2, captured crews of Churchill Crocodile tanks were often executed on the spot.

Hey Wes. Hope you’re doing awesome.
Something you should mention when the bolter is explained next time is that it is indeed based on reality. We did make two stage munition in the real world and it turned out to be way too expensive and of course we have a long way to go to perfect it.
But something was actually put into production.
Unfortunately now famous due to Battlefield V (us tank enthusiasts liked the hipster status of knowing something so badass that not much of the world knows about) the Sturmtiger used two stage munitions.
There’s actually footage of it being used in anger in the Siege of Warsaw Poland. Pretty exciting to see a 380mm rocket actually get used.
So wide that small men can fit in its width.
There’s also the principle of gyrojet weapons that were invented, but never used for anything serious due to their disadvantages.
I been following you for a min now an I have learned so much just watchin your videos keep it flowing brother!!
Keep in mind that not all space marines were the same size or strength, and their armor/ weapons would be somewhat tailored to fit them. That would help make sense of the wide array of gun size and caliber differences within the same weapon platform. For a general foot solider that is different. That would be more "one size fits all".

I have two points. First, I am very happy with how many references to the long fangs you used. All hail the Allfather! Second, these guns use science that is so far ahead of what we can comprehend today, that there is very little that is explainable about them.
Thanks for the interesting, informative video.
My classmates at my high school used to call me Heavy Flamer until it pretty much became my nickname.
I never understood or knew what they were referencing but, HEY, now I know it’s a badass weapon from WH40K!! Cool!!
You skimmed over the most horrible part of Phosphex. They call it "living fire" because it is attracted to movement. It's basically fire that hunts you, is hot enough to burn through most protection (including Legion Armour) and can stay inert for very long periods of time before being awakened and coming back just as hot and angry.

You're probably the most informing 40k personality because you don't just copy and paste what the lexicanum or the 40k wiki says. You find the little intriguing points that can be missed and extrapolate new original points too which is awesome.
My take on plasma vs melta- Plasma is essentially the fourth state of matter. Anything that gets hot enough will turn into plasma. The variety of plasma used in a lot of fiction is "contained" plasma. Usually described as magnetic containment (though it's unclear how the containment functions past the end of the barrel), the plasma is a ball that fires outward.
Meanwhile, flamers are technically a plasma weapon as well, in that fire is in and of itself, a form of plasma. To me, that leaves meltas as a bridge between the two. The higher intensity of a pure plasma weapon, with a dispersal pattern similar to flamer. Put another way, plasma guns shoot contained plasma, while meltas shoot uncontained plasma. The lack of containment means that the heat disperses far quicker, hence the reduced range.
Hot damn wes, youre teaching this old warhammer nerd something new once again. Keep up the good work!

20:22 "Sir that grip is far too large, please calm down"
I have a question
So as I look at space marine armour, I dont see anywhere they can hold their mags for their Boltgun so how do they even get more bullets or mags?
And how did the Sister of battle or Commisar use their Boltgun?
The way they store their ammo has changed over time and differs from book to book. Most of the time extra clips are mag locked to their armor. Space Marines often will have utility belts as well, and in older lore the ammo and grenades was stored in compartments inside of the armor. That would eject whenever the space marine needed it
A lot of the sprues now have utility belts and pouches that you can add to the miniatures.
As for the non-augmented humans such as guardsmen and the sororitas, they are using Ryza, Godwynn or mars pattern bolters (or patterns made on other forge worlds) theirs are smaller and have less recoil while still packing a comparable punch.
Space Marines use Astartes pattern bolters which are made specially to be used in the hands of a space marine, far larger than that of those used by standard humans
@@ErikVonStrix3 oh ok thanks
@@weshammer Now I'm imagining clips magged all over their armor so brothers can just snag mags off each others backs.

Playing Spacehulk: Deathwing with a heavy flamer is the best
I know I'm a little bit late, but I'd love to see a follow-up about the equivalent weapons of the Chaos Space Marines. The Thousand Sons' Soulreaper Cannon has always been a personal favorite of mine; it's basically an Assault Cannon - fun fact; the 40k wiki claims that the standard Assault Cannon has a rate of fire in the hundreds of rounds *per second* - but this variety fires Inferno Bolts. What are Inferno Bolts? They are a patented Thousand Sons invention; bolt shells that are ensorcelled and infused with the raw power of the Warp. When they explode, they release a gout of literal hellfire that is hot enough to *melt ceramite.* All Thousand Sons bolt weapons use Inferno Bolts, but none are quite as terrifying as the Soulreaper Cannon. If we take the "hundreds of rounds per second" thing at face value, well... you can only imagine what one of these things would do to a squad of loyalists. And it becomes even scarier when you take into account the fact that these things are being wielded by hollow automatons unconcerned with such mortal trifles as "suppressing fire" or "flesh wounds." Good luck putting it down before it puts you down.
Liked the collaboration with majorkill
Surprised you didn't include the balefire gun, those things are insane
-Sir, how big do we need to make the bolters?
-YES.
The melta might very well be both a microwave weapon and a plasma weapon at the same time. The plasma beam could be riding on a microwave beam that keeps it nice and toasty on its way to the target. Since the plasma from a melta is not constrained my a magnetic field it would need something to keep it from instantly cooling down on contact with the atmosphere.
you have made my adhd hyper focus on 40k lore since finding you on tiktok months ago 😩
Yessssssss another one!!!
I think the comparison between flamers and phosphex weaponry is the comparison between napalm and white phosphorus.
Meltas I've always thought of like shaped charges, creating a molten jet of metal that outside the effective range is too cold to actually penetrate armour. Plasma weapons use magnets to make essentially balls of plasma that curl around themselves to travel through the air, which on impact release the heat and energy "trapped" inside the outer layer. I've also thought of plasma weapon overloads as the magnetic systems breaking under the strain of combat conditions, exploding as the "round" of gas in the magnetic chamber violently escapes through the weak point in the field.
Personally, my favourite to field has always been the good ol' bolter. Back when I played (4th Ed) I ran a Black Legion army that generally favoured Berserkers for assault units, with heavy fire support from a Defiler or two and maybe a Predator, led by an undivided daemon prince who generally existed to wreck everyone's day but not as hard as the Bloodthirster possessed champion with an Axe of Khorne. He could tear through the most heavily armoured units without breaking a sweat, though there was nothing as sweet as running a squad of fairly cheap berserkers into a high-point cost unit of terminators and telling them their 2+ armour save was now 4+.
