  • Episode 247 - The MiSTer is an FPGA-based device that runs cores for many different platforms. It originates from the MiST project which had an initial goal of creating an FPGA version of the Atari ST computer. Curiously, there is no Atari ST core for the MiSTer at the time this video is being released, but I fully expect one in the future. I bought my MiSTer and the add-ons at the appropriately-named www.misteraddons.com and they were extremely helpful in helping me set up my MiSTer and also the making of this video, as was Smokemonster whose channel can be found here - / smokemonster

    Decided to rewatch this to reminisce about just how far things have come for the MiSTer project in the past few years. It would be cool to see you revisit this at some point, maybe to talk about some of the many more cores that have come out since then, the vastly improved video output/scaling options, or just to see how much more accurate some of the cores you already talked about have become these days. Overall the system definitely feels a lot less bare-bones today than it did back in 2019!

    1. AWESOME VIDEO! Thanks for giving MiSTer a spin and sharing it with your viewers!
    2. Some corrections:
    - The scaler and filters can be used via VGA output if you set vga_scaler=1 in the MiSTer.ini file
    - HDMI out can have almost as low a latency as VGA output if you use vsync_adjust=2 in the MiSTer.ini file (these ini settings can be changed via the scripts that download with the updater without editing anything, also)
    - Shimmering over HDMI can be greatly reduced/removed by using the Gaussian_Sharp filters. There are varying levels of sharpness to suit tastes there too.
    - Autosave has been added to most console cores, so you wont need to select the "Save backup RAM" option every time you exit a game.
    - Genesis audio now has selections for "Model 1", "Model 2", "Light Filter" and "Unfiltered", to suit tastes.
    - 2+ players works in supported games, simply by adding the controller in the main MiSTer menu first. after you do that, the cores can assign buttons to them correctly.
    - GBC didnt work most likely because you didn't add the correct BIOS, which is needed.
    3. Additions:
    - MiSTer has already been updated with lightgun support that even works over HDMI.
    - Game Genie/Game Shark cheat codes have been added for all the major consoles.
    - Extremely low latency input options are coming in the form of the LLCoolJoy, Blissbox's BlisSTer (retropad32 will also have serial connection capability in the future iirc)
    - Coming Soon: TGFX CD & Dodonpachi Arcade
    - If you encounter any glitches or errors in a game, report them on the MiSTer github page for the applicable core! Issues get fixed surprisingly quick, but only if they are known!

      Thanks for the additional info! But I'm talking REAL lightgun support, not mouse lightgun support. Real lightguns can't work over HDMI (well, the Zapper might but the Zapper works differently than the Light Phaser, Menacer and SuperScope). The mouse lightgun support (for Zapper) was added after this video was finished production.

It's not proper lightgun support, but that is in the works for analog output as well =) The BlisSTer addon, LLCoolJoy and RetroPad32 will all likely be able to support this. The biggest advantage of the FPGA based simulation is the audio delay.
    On software emulators, you have to use the CPU to simulate the audio circuits, and as you can't just write a program that updates the sound card 44100 times per second, you end up having to fill up a buffer, then sending the buffer and swapping etc.. so the sound ends a bit behind the video.

    • @ModernRetroGameplay
      @ModernRetroGameplay Před 2 lety +1

      The solution to sound problems in emulating is simple, add at least 1 extra cpu core more than what you think you need when choosing the hardware so the sound alone can have a whole cpu to its self. (basically don't emulate on anything less than a quad core cpu) Today if you want the most bang for your buck on a real SUPER emulation device buy a laptop with specifically a 4K ready integrated GPU and an 8 core cpu(or 8 logical processors to be specific) like a late model i5cpu is good enough and make sure it has an actual hard drive of some kind in it and that would get you probably 1 step better than most devices in console emulation and it would have the space to fit every game for ever console even CD and DVD based consoles. That would probably be cheaper than an Xbox atm TBH lol. They even have HDMI out and enough usb ports for mutiplayer couch gaming on the go portable and it fits in a "Game Sack" lol so its not a pain to bring it to a friends house and plug it into a big tv. Another trick...... consoles had dedicated SPUs so to emulate that properly its not a good idea to send the sound through the HDMI, sending it anywhere else forces the integrated sound to do the sound processing giving it its own bandwidth on a separate processor like it should instead of making a GPU do the work of an SPU.

    • @dan_loup
      @dan_loup Před 2 lety

      @@ModernRetroGameplay You could indeed do that, but the OS might still interrupt it. But we're talking 20-30ms of audio delay nowadays if you use something like retroarch and configure it by hand, which is like 1-2 frames away.

    Excellent overview of the MiSTer, super thorough and your attention to detail is amazing! In the Amiga game launcher though, you can just hold up to bring up the alphabet and go straight to the letter you want.. :) Running games this way is kinda "non-standard" even on a real Amiga, so a lot of the issues you might have can be representative of the actual experience, it was a PC after all. You can also configure the Amiga to run like a 500 instead of a 1200, and just boot games from floppy images - many games run better this way I find.

    • @noth606
      @noth606 Před 4 lety +2

      K3zster Lol, heck even on the real hardware half the stuff doesn't run or doesn't run right, so I think the MiSTer is doing it justice. But also I would expect A500 with floppy images to be the least problematic as that's how it is in real life as well, as soon as you throw anything else into it like turbo cards, HDD's etc one should expect some wonkyness.

    Hi, please try vsync_adjust=2 in MiSTer.ini (vsync_low_latency script) for removing stuttering and lag from the HDMI output. Some TV sets may have problems (especially with specific cores), but most will work. You can even have per core settings in the ini (so falling back to vsync_adjust=0 for very specific cores). Try custom filters (it's a core menu option) like Gaussian Sharp 4 or higher, for best quality scaling with no shimmering.

    • @darthv72
      @darthv72 Před 5 lety +1

      I think the stuttering was in the video itself. I saw it on non game play segments too. It might have been his rendering software for the final output.

    • @Locutus73
      @Locutus73 Před 5 lety +3

      darthv72 let me explain vsync_adjust setting.
      With vsync_adjust=0 (the default, out of the box value) MiSTer scaler (which sits between the “virtual/mimicked” console/computer RGB output and the real HDMI out) uses a triple buffer and the original display frequency; so if you i.e. set the HDMI out to 1080p60 you get a video out at 60Hz (best TV compatibility) while, if you use the SNES core, the console video out is at 60.09Hz, so the scaler, through the triple buffer, scales the image and does frame pacing introducing 2 frames of lag and some stuttering (but no tearing). If you set vsync_adjust=1, the scaler still uses a triple buffer (so 2 frames of lag) but it uses the console/computer video out frequency, so no more stuttering but you can get some incompatibility between weird frequencies and some TV sets not supporting them. With vsync_adjust=2 the scaler uses a single buffer (actually just few lines of buffering) and the original console/computer frequency: if your TV supports it, this is the best mode, with just few lines (sub 1 frame, probably less than 1millisecond) of lag and no stuttering: actually the same as an OSSC, but with the added benefit of having a real scaler and not just a line multiplier.

    • @darthv72
      @darthv72 Před 5 lety +1

      @@Locutus73 I think you are reading to much into my comment. I'm not saying your suggestion is wrong, quite the contrary. I just noticed a stuttering in the overall video, meaning his render was not clean so it stutters every few seconds throughout the entire thing. Kind of like a buffer issue and I know i'm not the only one who noticed.

    Controllers: if you plug a second (and third, fourth, etc.) controller in MiSTer, the first controller you use in a core is console controller 1, the second you use is controller 2 and so on. IIRC multitap is supported in cores like SNES. Oh, btw, recently Wiimote support was added with Zapper implementation in NES core... pretty neat.

      7:16 - the latency via HDMI is now apparently less than one frame on average.
      The display itself of course adds a bit more, and that amount depends on the model / make.
      An overclocking option should be quite trivial to add to the core. I think it's been on the (very long) MiSTer todo list for a while. lol

    • @electronash
      @electronash Před 5 lety +1

      7:23 - I tried fixing that interlaced mode for two-player on the core years ago (before MiSTer was a thing), but didn't quite make it. lol
      gendev.spritesmind.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1327&sid=ce45efc1aac6d0d7dd2f7f295a81eb2d&start=45
      Luckily, Mr Sorgelig finally fixed that a few months ago.
      It should be possible to add an option to the core to force the interlaced mode to output as progressive. (with no tearing or "mouse teeth" at all).
      That might prevent the analog RGB / Component output working in that mode, though.

      Mr Furrtek is also making progress with CD support for his Neo Geo core. It promises to be one of the most accurate cores, as he spent years reverse-engineering the custom chips from the original machine.

    • @electronash
      @electronash Před 5 lety

      btw, quite a few C64 and Amiga games require the joystick to be on port 2, hence the joyswap option in the OSD.
      Plus, a lot of the games for those systems only work properly in PAL mode.
      Other Amiga games require the OCS/ECS or AGA mode switch, some need the Kickstart 1.3 ROM or a Degrader, and some have specific RAM requirements. This is not a limitation of the core itself, but was an issue with certain games on the original hardware.
      Some Amiga games also require you to hit the mouse button to get past the intro / crack screens etc., which is the same as hitting fire on joyport 2.
      Not sure why the MSX games really need to be zipped. It is very slow to unpack them, so the ROM pack could probably do with being tweaked there.
      The larger SD cards are quite cheap now, but you can also use USB storage with MiSTer, like a 2.5" HDD.
      There is also support for Cloud storage for things like save games, but I haven't tried that yet.

    Minimig is a stand alone fpga board, that explains the name.
    Also if the games that flicker on loading a WHDLoad installs and there is no option for preload is normal. It emulates floppy disk loading from the hard disk. This is done on Amigas with low ram.

    • @jayminer
      @jayminer Před 5 lety +1

      To be a bit more in-depth, the reason the loading flickers to black is because WHDLoad (which is a program for installing games that originally was only playable from floppy on a hard disk) needs to turn on multi-tasking and the operating system when loading and then switch back to the game. And indeed the games can be preloaded into RAM if there is enough memory available, usually with 8MB RAM or more you never see any black flashes.

    The problem with F-16 Fighting Falcon on the Genesis is that it uses a legacy graphics mode in the Master System's VDP. Basically the Master System VDP is an enhanced version of the same Texas Instruments VDP family that was used in the Coleco Vision and MSX, and the Genesis VDP is a further development of the Master system's VDP. The Genesis VDP retains the Master System specific graphic modes but not the older legacy modes.

    I love my MiSTer. For me, it's completely replaced software emulation in the role of "fall-back measure" for when you don't currently own a specific console/computer. And to be honest, there's a couple of consoles I do own, that due to things like capacitor health or poor mod-work, actually output less pleasing results than their respective MiSTer core.
    EDIT: btw the few C64 games you couldn't get to play are likely ones where you need to swap to controller port 2. There wasn't standardisation back then as to which port to use, so gamers had to swap on a per game basis.
