The genre might be Blue Grass, country, Appalachia folk, etc. It epitomizes the blended sound of mountain music, which takes its inspirations from Irish, Scottish, and American folk and blends them all to make… this.
You nailed it. It's all of what you said, mixed together in the story-telling tradition of all those genres. The story itself is a takeoff on the old folk tales of the Devil making a bet with someone and if that someone fails to win the bet then the Devil gets to take the loser's soul. It's also reminiscent of the self-penned tale of blues/ragtime guitarist, Robert Johnson, who went down to the "Crossroads" to make a deal with the Devil whereby the Devil promised to make Robert into the best blues guitar player around in exchange for Robert's soul. The deal was sealed, the Devil got Robert's soul and Robert walked off into the realm of legend. Robert wrote the song back in the 1930s. It's now a classic story brought into the public consciousness by several artists, including Eric Clapton, and was made into a great little movie starring Ralph Macchio (from the "Karate Kid" films) and featuring a burning hot guitar duel between the Macchio character and the Devil (played by the fabulous Steve Vai. "Johnny's" songs are very old Appalachian mountain folk songs: Fire on the mountain, run boys run, the devils in the house of the rising sun, chicken in the bread pan picking out dough, granny does your dog bite, no child no.
I'm not even a big country fan, but Charlie Daniels is a legend. It's so refreshing to see young people, especially black folks, enjoying not only this, but rock and roll from the 60-80's.
In the 60's and 70's nobody worried about "genre" on the regular radio stations you'd hear everything from hillbilly, country, rock, blues, soul, orchestra, jazz, it just all happened at the same time. That's why the music from that era is so awesome.
Some radio stations only had two types of music: Country and Western.
Charlie Daniels (RIP) was a legend. I remember when this came out. Charlie had to have a version suitable for radio play (it was the late 70s), so he said "son of a gun" instead of "son of a b----". We'd all listen closely to see if the radio station would play the sanitized version or the original. Of course we preferred the original!
FM Rock Radio stations in NYC played the ORIGINAL.
Then again, in liberal NYC, "gun" is arguable a more vulgar word than "bitch"
I thought he changed it when he became a born-again evangelical Christian.
@meganhutcheson5867 I don't know when Daniels became a born-again Christian, but I do know he was still using sob at the Farm Aid several years later, and I do remember the minor controversy of saying the b-word on the radio. Profanity hadn't quite been acceptable yet on TV or radio. Maybe a little, but absolutely nothing like today.

This came out in 1979, and was a huge crossover and is still played on both classic country and classic rock radio stations today. One of my favorite songs, great reaction. There is a follow up to this song, The Devil Returns to Georgia, with Charlie Daniels and Johnny Cash. This can be classified as either country or Southern Rock.

I met Charlie, and he was just a true gentleman and absolutely LOVED HIS FANS AND LOVED TO PERFORM!! He would go offstage after the last set and wait until the crowd thought he was surely gone, then rush back out on stage and do a 45 minute set!! The crowd always went NUTS OVER THAT!! Charlie's violin teacher told his parents he had no talent, so he should quit...wonder where that dude's been hidin' out...(YIKES!!!😂) Sadly Charlie has been gone for a few years now. The piano player - SO TALENTED - Taz DiGregorio was his name, sadly passed away in a terrible car accident while he was on his way to meet the band early one morning to begin a long road tour. It was raining and slippery and he lost control of his car. That was at least 15 or more years ago.
Charlie was a storyteller, and you will find that in his music. What a talent!! WHAT A SHOWMAN!! The band wrote all of their songs, and they started out in the sixties, I believe, playing anywhere they could, and living in a van.
This is basically an evolution of Celtic/Scots-Irish folk music from the Appalachian mountains (where the term "hillbilly" originated). It was hillbilly folk that became country eventually, which led to its mixing with the blues and r&b that spawned the original rocknroll music. This is Charlie takin it to the next level in the 70's (before hip hop, modern rock, and modern country). The Celtic boys brought the fiddle, banjo, and guitar in as an element of Americana/folk (and eventually Kentucky bluegrass) music in the 1800's, and it became iconic in the 1940's and 50's when dudes like Hank Williams brought it into the American mainstream during the first true wave of country music (called "hillbilly music" at the time).

@theresahenderson3534 back in the days of CDs, I bought a rock CD. It had a promo CD packaged on the back. Mozart. For a long time I never heard it. Theb I played it and loved it. You're gonna raise your eyebrows, but I had a multi CD player then, and I sandwiched Mozart in between Janis Joplin and Johnny Cash. I can't tell you how, but it worked!

I saw Charlie Daniels in concert in the early 80’s. Incredible performance! One of his early recordings (early 70’s) was a song called “Uneasy Rider”. It was hilarious and since it was spoken rather than sung, I called it Redneck Rap.

The Charlie Daniels Band was more in the gendre of *Southern Rock* than it was Country Music. The band was respected highly from both groups regardless.
There's a sequel to this song, called "The Devil Came Back to Georgia". It features Johnny Cash as the narrator, Travis Tritt as the devil, Marty Stuart as Johnny, and a session musician named Mark O'Connor playing Johnny's fiddle part. O'Connor plays Charlie's fiddle solo, but plays three notes for every note Charlie played. It's pure fiddle fire!!

I was watching a Korean TV series. The song they used was The Devil Went Down To Georgia in Korean. Didn't quite have the soul in it. So this song is known all over the world.

The line about the Devil being in the House of the Rising Sun may have been a reference to the song of the same name. If so, it most likely is there to indicate that the Devil was about to be beaten. (The song references a brothel that was shut down in the 1800’s.)

I think it's very cool to see a young person discover and enjoy music that I've been listening to and loving for over 40 years. This song came out when I was 10 or 11 years old and it was 20 years at least from the time I first heard it on radio until I heard the uncensored version without the 'son of a gun' line he did for radio and the first singles they put out in the stores. I still remember pedaling my bicycle to the local record store just to buy the single on 45. It's country but some also categorize it as southern rock. I never cared what slot it filled it was all just good music to me. The world lost a great man and fantastic story teller and musician in 2020.

I grew up listening to The Charlie Daniels Band, and I was lucky enough to see him live many times. He was great every time. We called this genre of music "Southern Rock" along with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, ZZ Top, The Doobie Brothers and more. It was a great time. RIP Charlie.
This is absolutely country music. It used to be it's own thing. Modern "country" is essentially 1960s - 1970s rock with a fiddle and a steel guitar thrown in.
I remember when this song came out, I was 13 in 1979 and this song was huge even on rock radio stations at that time making it sort of a crossover as it doesn't really fit rock & roll and it doesn't really fit county either especially at that time. I enjoy how the story plays out.

My grandfather played the fiddle and he played at country dances. He was a farmer. My mom moved us to Brooklyn NYC and it's a whole other world but we can great experiences good and bad from wherever we grow up.
This is called southern rock along with bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, but Charlie also played traditional country and gospel music and he was an excellent musician with the fiddle, guitar and others, he was just multi-talented like that.

While there are a lot of people who will say that a fiddle has strangs rather than strings, the real difference between violin playing and fiddling is that in Fiddling, you are usually playing 2 strings, the 'keyed or fingered string, and the string next to it which is played as a drogue (think the reeds on a bagpipe that are 'tuned' at the start of a performance, then continue to emit the same tone throughout play.
The style of song is closer to bluegrass than country, but it's sort of a bluegrass country rock mix more than any one of them.
One of the 'interesting' things about the scales performed by Charlie in this piece are that they are the Tipsy scale for stringed instruments, rather than the traditional scale used in most other fiddle and violin pieces. Nothing wrong with it, just it was as 'interestingly odd at the time as the entire song was for the performance.

Great reaction. One minor pet peeve. Reactors way too often ask/wonder what genre a song is. I guess it shouldn’t annoy me… we have genres for a reason. But many songs, especially now, cross and mix genres. Country music may do it the most, as most country artists have opted for more rock-style instrumentation. “Pure” country music almost doesn’t even exist anymore. That may sound like a complaint or an insult. It isn’t. At all. It’s a compliment. Music is art. It’s creativity. There should be no boundaries defined by genres. So, it’s a great thing that artists are mixing it up. If you must know, I think most would consider this country-rock, with the sub-genre of country being bluegrass, which may be why it doesn’t quite match your perception of what country music is.
As an aside, someone criticized you for calling it a violin. It doesn’t matter. Violin… fiddle… they’re the same, we just use the different name depending on what type of music is being played. So, you weren’t really wrong. The only reason it’s important to know for this song is because he’s literally playing the music from the Devil and Johnny’s battle. They’re having a fiddle battle and he’s playing the fiddle. If you think he’s playing the violin you might miss that point.
