I HAD A FELLOW WOODMAN OUT WITH ME SPLITTING SOME KNOTTY FIREWOOD BY HAND WITH AN AXE, I SHOW A COUPLE TECHNIQUES HOW TO APPROACH REALLY KNOTTY WOOD WITH AN AXE
Hey Billy, I'm so happy for you that you are able to spend precious time with your dad. What an awesome team. Thank you for all of your advice as I'm fairly new to this. I wish I would be 25% as accurate as you are I'd be something. Blessings from a 73 old wannabe woodsman. (X27 and X7 Fiskars)
I love watching when the boys go out to play. Great team work. I'm making a small wood shed from scraps.using boat storage plastic to keep the rain and snow off. Got some scraps from a craftsman who replaced rotted logs on the exterior of our town museum. Recycling at its best! Thanks for sharing your recovery video. It brought back how I made it from my accident when a young girl ran me down while I walked on the side of a road. Human survival is amazing! You are an inspiration. Thanks you.
I just started splitting wood after going on a tree falling job with my uncle. Got a 6lb maul, logs, and went to work. The nuances in looking for knots and what the wood is telling you to do has saved me a lot of chopping and energy. Thanks for the tips, Buckin' Billy Ray
Great advice mate. Could've saved a few axe handles over the years. Just found your channel and I find it soothing watching your videos. Great memories of cutting and chopping wood with family, some of whom aren't around anymore. The smell of wood and sawdust always brings it back.

Fun watching you split wood Buckin! Have to convince you to come to the Ozarks some time and split some of the mighty oaks we have here! I split 5 1/2 cords by hand this year. It's a heck of a workout and it makes you feel like you did something when you're done.
Hot dang! Look at those 2 young fellas splittin that Balsam! Swingin an axe just keeps a man young I think! I love the transformation of wood rounds into a pile of split wood! This video had some old school Buckin' video editing to it! I like it!

Great video buckin. I love splitting wood with an axe. I always find it challenging to try to work around the knots and get it down to the smallest size I can. A big hello to you your family and the community. Have a great week everyone.
Wow Buckin!! I was just talking to keelinga and made a video for her sunday goin over the same exact points. We were vid chatting the whole time so she could ask questions. thanks to a few of your vids i was able to find a way to work my axe into and through the nastiest piece of wood ive met yet. the grain pretty much turned into a question mark at the end while also twisting to one side. thanks for making awesome content that actually helps people out.

Nice seeing you Woodman Spirit. Thanks Buckin’ for showing your splits! Run with your knots and not your axes! You guys will sleep good after all that wood therapy!
Real apple juice! That looks yummy! Btw I love my axe buckin my wife ordered it for me last Christmas and it was a big surprise, I had no idea and watched you messing with my axe an had no stinkin clue! I love it I’ve made two more myself since then I found some vintage heads from the local flea market. I love wood thanks buckin stay kind friend
Everything you've said NOT to do in this video, I've been doing. Awwww MAN. I split firewood for my wood stove(mostly oak) and for about 8 years; while using a $20 splitting maul and $4 wedge, I'd split through my Knotts. I've DESTROYED a dozen wedges and probably 3 mauls now. Ever since watching your videos and listening when you say IGNORE THE KNOTS, I've stopped wasting time and split more wood. I would work the same round for about 20-30 minutes just because it has knots before. THANKYOU, my time has been cut down to just a few minutes for several rounds. I can't even get into not splitting the sides but instead putting the wedge DEAD CENTER. Sheesh.
Hi buckin I was always taught to split wood from the top down (so from the top of the tree down to the stump) thanks for the vids mate your doing 1 hell of a job for the world keep it up.
thanks for a really educational video :great for folks like me who don't have much experience splitting logs- however, we've now got a woodburning stove installed and looking for logs all the time - just got about 5 tons today many of which are knotted, so your teaching will hopefully prove useful. ATB from the UK Woody 🙂
These videos are so much more chaotic than anything instructional I've ever watched, but I think I've learned more watching these than anything else!! We're drinking apple juice at 3:00 and beating the crap out of knotty wood at 8:00.
Hey Buckin, I saw you in the woods at the Morgans.... ha ha.... What a hoot if you haven't seen Mikes video regarding pulling down a widow maker you have to watch it... it is hysterical....

Another top quality video mate! And don't worry I know just how tough a knotted bit of pine can be I've got my property here in Australia and a plantation of 4000 pines and 35 hectares of hard wood country and I'd say had wood is easier then the soft wood most of the time . Keep up the great work and I'll be sure to spread the kindness back here in Australia keep safe mate.

Buckin, your Balsam up there looks and seems to split and be as knotty as our "white pine" here on the east coast. I could be wrong, but it is knotty, sappy and tough to split with a light axe. love your teaching Buckin. thanks.
after a 12 hour day this was healing!!! love it good music and good people, i think this could be a new segment. splitting wood with the buckin and the wood man!!!
The most difficult wood to split that I've had the misfortune to work with was Elm. It has really twisty interlocking grain and consequently is resistant to splitting. My brother and I at 10 & 12 years old were given the chore to split the 2 big trees that my dad and uncle felled. We waited until the temperature got down to 20 below and had to use steel wedges and sledge hammers. Axes were used just to cut the stringy grain when we tried to pull the split pieces apart. No wonder I have arthritis in my old age.
Knotted up wood like that gets real irritating😂 my splitter doesn’t seem to mind though🤷🏻♂️ hand splitting is a lot more fun though😜 love to you and the family❤️
That's awesome, wicked good workout. Much satisfaction using your various weapons. Have you ever used splitting wedges and maul on that softwood? Love watching you re-hab those old McCulloch's. My dad used to have one, don't recollect the model. I do remember him trying to refuel it while it was running because once you shut it off it wouldn't start again until tomorrow!! We have split many many cords of firewood by hand cause he sells firewood to people. Can't do it by hand any longer, hurts too much!! You're doin a great job, keep it up!!
Thank you so much Billy, I love splitting wood just for fun but knotty gnarly wood just takes the fun out for me and gets frustrating. I hope this helps me. Thank you friend :)
Welcome to the new subscribers and I hope you all had a great day. Great tips, Buckin'! For the discussion about people saying: come out here and bang some hard wood... I've got some oak around here that is way easier to split than the pine (fir) that's laying around, simply because of the knots.
I know everything you speak of about the splitting knots I learned to finesse my wood years ago and know exactly how to hit it 😂😂😂 oh my I just read that back to my self that’s pretty funny
It's still not the same. Lol. Love your swing. I swear. Trouble is your just gonna sink it into my wood deeper stuck. Read your wood for sure. Great information

Haha!...thanks Buckin'!...this was such a fun day, you did a great job putting this video together, it captured the mood well. Thanks for speeding the vid up briefly (I needed a helping hand)...I was very cautious after tearing my trapezius twice in the last two months. Thankfully I felt great the following day, no harm done. P.S. thanks for the tips on knot splitting, as you say I have only been splitting wood for 10,000 years...and I know I have some bad habits :) Greetings to new subs and 'old' true blues on the 'Buckin' Billy Ray Smith Channel.'
Thanks for saving me hundreds of pointless swings. That was a very good explanation on how to deal with knots. I was advised to just throw the pieces with knots in a big burn pile and split the rest.
When I lived in CA, I had a wood man come to my place to take out a bad tree and cut it for firewood. He cut it down and cut the trunk into full bolts. He came back the next day with an axe that was like a kitchen knife - thin and sharp. He went down the tree walking on one side and taking several wacks at each. It split like nothing I'd seen. Another guy in the mountain valley had an axe that had spreaders on each side that as the axe went in, the spreaders inside of the blade would pivot out and spread the wood apart. I don't do much axe work anymore - turning 72. Do have my saws and take care of trees and limbs.
We primarily burn hardwood like Ash, oak, birch and other similar in the northeast. May varieties of wood obviously. I love using mauls most of the time, just blows the rounds apart. For huge big knotted rounds I get the 10lb sledge and a few wedges! Great fun haha
Great educational video buckin , here in Australia we don’t get knotty ugly wood where the nots run to the centre of the wood , old mate is also doin a great job on the axe , also buckin would it be easier to use a splitter??????
But we do get wood that won't split with a 30 ton splitter but the ram splits instead , then you have to finish the splitting with the power saw and go to the hospital 👍
