  • This week Ann dug through the junk drawers and went shopping at Michael's for fun and affordable ways to create unique textures for your pottery. We think you will enjoy experimenting with some of these ideas...let your junk be your guide! We provided links to many of the items below if you would like to purchase.
If you would like to learn Ann's underglaze painting, glazing, and decorating process then check out Ann's Video Workshop Series. These workshops are very detailed (typically 1.5 - 2 hours in length) where Ann provides step by step instruction and are designed to help potters take their work to new levels of craftsmanship and artistry. vimeo.com/showcase/6725318

way back in the early 1970s, i was in high school and i made a weed pot to which i added some small clay mounds/buttons which had things like nuts and phillips screw heads pressed into them, then "glued" them to the weed pot with slip. they were maybe 3/4 to one inch across and maybe 1/8th to 3/8ths thickness. it looked pretty cool when done...kind of like little mushroom heads or smooth barnacles. the top of the pot was covered with little tubular spouts, and guys in my art class said my pot looked like a distributer cap. i still have it, although it's living in a packing box in the basement at the moment. *:-)*

@@annruel9142 : i liked your ideas. have you ever tried getting texture from pressing stiff fabrics on to clay? i haven't done any pottery in years, but i think about it now and then. it's a matter of finding somewhere to do it that is affordable for me as i am retired and on a fixed income. take care!

@@nowvoyagerNE That is an interesting idea . I havent tried stiff fabrics, but will be on the lookout. I hope you find a nice pottery class near you. Sounds like you would have a lot of fun doing it.

@@annruel9142 : i think making pottery would be fun too. i never mastered the potter's wheel. by stiff textured fabrics i am thinking of burlaps, perhaps reptile patterns, upholstery fabrics. i googled "stiff textured fabrics" and got a couple of ideas. there are also woven grasses and reeds such made into flexible things such as placemats that might work to texturize clay. ooohh! bamboo! but i am trying to sing to the choir here, as you are the master and i am a mere grasshopper. lol.
