    Thanks to TommyTinkles for asking the question, but apparently the MPC One can only store ONE USER TEMPLATE at a time. So it's STILL a pain to work in different time signatures. Hopefully this gets addressed in firmware update in the future!

    Just a tip, instead of copy and pasting and nudging, just use the pencil tool and draw a note on an unused pad that runs the exact length of the thing you are copy and pasting. Then, when you paste, it will automatically place everything at the start of a measure. When you are done copy and pasting, you can easily use the select tool to swipe all the way across the screen and delete the unused note. I typically will use an unused pad that falls in a range nowhere near the pads I will be using to make it even easier to select that note for removing. For example, I might be using banks A-D, and banks G and H (don't ask, the way I arrange my samples into banks is complex), so Ill use a pad in the E or F bank, that way, my one measure note is in the middle of empty space and easy to remove.

    Another way of setting a good number of measures is to start with either 2 or 4 measures, record the drums, then just double them up a few times. This saves copying and nudging the drums.

      Very true! Unless you're writing a drum part start to finish haha.

    Nice tips. You can remove the need to use the nudge feature when copying midi info though (which can be time consuming when you need to place your midi data a long way from where it originates). Select your notes, hold down the shift button and then you will see cut, copy and paste buttons appear on the screen. When you paste midi info it will be placed wherever the playhead is at so it's a good idea to set this before you copy.

    Set more measures than you need? Just turn off looping and measures will be added automatically as you are recording…

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  Před 2 lety +1

      You honestly just blew my mind, I can't believe I've never noticed that, or that I've never seen anyone else point it out in any videos!

    • @BryanGreen24
      @BryanGreen24 Před 2 lety +1

      @@FreeBeat Yeah, don't remember where I learned that; the manual mentions you can turn looping off, but doesn't mention that bars get appended to the end of the sequence as you record. The other thing I just realized after looking back at the manual is that if you adjust the 'start' and 'end' values above the looping button, you can loop over a section of a sequence (seems obvious, but I totally missed that)...

    Thanks for a good video. I'm currently contemplating getting an MPC One and would like to use it for couch jamming and linear songwriting. One thing I was wondering is if you could set a long sequence and play along to it for the length of your song, but then go back and cut the sequence into the different sections of the song (verse, chorus, intro, outro, bridge etc.

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  Před 3 lety +1

    • @tomph3862

      You can always make a few duplicates of your initial whole-song-sequence and then reduce from there to make your sections

    So much easier doing it linear, for me at least....been designing long noise floors etc that I want to hit once and let just the sound itself ring out and build on its own throughout the song, was difficult when working with multiple sequences....

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  Před 3 lety

      I completely agree, working in sequences seems to really stifle my workflow.

    If you have multiple User Templates,
    When you select User Template from the new menu, does it ask you which template to use? As far can tell it just loads the most recent template?

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  Před 3 lety

      Wow, I had just assumed you could store multiple templates, but you are indeed correct. The MPC One can only store ONE user template. That is absolutely ridiculous. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

    • @tom-541
      @tom-541 Před 3 lety

      @@FreeBeat I believe you can save multiple templates - but you'd have to load them specifically.
      I think saving as a template in that way just means none of the grid events etc get saved, but your sequence layout / track layout / programs do. I'd have to check though.
      So while you can have many templates (I think!) the USER TEMPLATE button just gives you one of them.

    Right now, I’m still trying to decide between the MPC one and the Verselab.

    • @peterjessop1878
      @peterjessop1878 Před 3 lety

      From what I have seen, the verselab is a much more basic machine and really designed for vocalists and beginners. Only one audio track and really basic sampling are the deal breakers for me.

    • @lpchannel7316
      @lpchannel7316 Před 3 lety +1

      @@peterjessop1878 it's not designed for vocalists, the vocal track is an additonal feature of the device. Verselab is like an upgraded mc-101 with more tracks (there are btw 2 looper tracks + 1 vocal track, so I don't understand what you mean by saying there's only one audio track), fx and it's supposed to be a DAW in a box, so more tools for sound polishing too. I really recommend to watch the latest Gabe Miller's MV-1 first impressions video. He's not the best reviewer, but for sure he knows his grooveboxes well. SoI totally agree with his conclusion about MV-1 niche: more powerful than MC-101, offers a lot of tools to finish your songs, probably less powerful than MC-707, definitely not a "groovebox for rappers".

    • @peterjessop1878
      @peterjessop1878 Před 3 lety

      @@lpchannel7316 I think the Versalab is designed for vocalists and is certainly being marketed that way. you can produce full songs with only limited musical/technical knowledge as it’s largely a preset machine. I would take an MC101 every time over the Verselab purely as a sound module. I take your point on the looper tracks, but it doesn’t really compare to the MPC in terms of functionality. EG 8 audio tracks so you can record real instruments whether synths or guitars or vocals with variations over a full song not just loops, auto sampling, ability to create wavetable type synths with the sampler and much more. The Verselab is not a bad product but is just not in the same class as MPC One yet. It may well improve with firmware updates of course.

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  Před 3 lety

      The MPC looks like it absolutely destroys the verse lab in my opinion.

    • @lpchannel7316
      @lpchannel7316 Před 3 lety

      @@peterjessop1878 I never tried to compare MPC One and Verselab - those are very different units. Just wanted to point out that Verselab is something inbetween MC-101 and MC-707, and it makes sense to buy one even for those who don't do vocals. It's overpriced, though.

    • @johnalver
      @johnalver Před 2 lety

      @@FreeBeat the work flow is entirely too complex for task that is completes. I feel I would have been better off with the standard daw. The worst offence is I can't use the sample pads independent of a program (that can easily be done on a cheap drum pad) fit $800 I got an overly complicated work flow and hardware with a steep learning curve. I would have been better off buying separate products to do what this $800 all in one claims it does.
