Why does the portrait of Gustavus Adolphus look like he was just caught by his wife looking at trans pr0n?
Geronimo or any of the previous Apache Chiefs before him would be dope!
Hey! Just so you know. No body of us in Sweden calls him Gustavus Adolphus. We just say Gustav den andre Adolf (Gustav II Adolf) and I would say he is the secound most famous of our old Kings. After Gustav Vasa

Some fun facts: In 1621, in order to better defend southern Sweden from the Danes, Gustavus Adolphus ordered the construction of a fortress city of the entrance to the Göta river. This fortress town is what is today known as the city of Gothenburg, or Göteborg in swedish (”Göte” being a slightly changed “Göta”, and “borg” being the swedish word for fortress, so the name basically means “fortress of the Göta”)
According to legend, Gustavus was looking down toward the wetlands at the river entrance from atop a mountain (which one it was, I’m not quite sure), pointed down toward it and said ”Här är där staden ska ligga!”, which translates to ”This is where the city will be!”. There is a statue depicting this outside the city hall in Gothenburg.
"Slightly changed", it's not changed, it's linguistics; -e is a genitive ending and Göta is a noun
He was only 37 when he died. And he was full of life and passion when he lived. Everyone who got to know him liked him. His German import wife got heartbroken when he died, because she was truely in love with him and his burial took ages to accomplish because she could not accept that he was dead.
They took out the King's heart and put it into a golden box which the Queen carried around everywhere.
Sweden was mourning the loss of loved great King. And Oxenstierna had lost both a great friend and a great coworker. There was nobody that could replace Gustavus, despite Sweden had the best all star team in Europe of gifted Generals and administrators.

A time of religion and war, legends tell the tale of a lion
This beast in the shape of a man with a dream to rule sea and land
Yes I get to know him thanks to Sabaton.
Now to wait for Carolus Rex. I'm surprised he hasn't covered Alexander Hamilton yet - another historical figure that would provide good clickbait.

I knew of him before Sabaton.
But Sabaton made me love him!

His tactics and writings were also inspiration for the New Model Army of the English Civil War, and as a result, the foundation of the fearsome Redcoat soldier in general. A much underappreciated genius and a worthy subject.

There is a patch of Land near Lützen that has a monument for Gustav Adolph (as he's called in Germany). This patch of Land is owned by Sweden.
Gustav Adolf in traditional Swedish 😁 They sure did like giving them roman names though
@@Ragemuffn Meh, I don't care
Swedish troops in the Thirty Years' War had mass twice daily (Lutherans retain the mass).
In 1600s Estonia was part of the Swedish Kingdom. Gustavus Adolphus founded the University of Dorpat (today called Tartu) in Estonia. Estonians very proud of this university, graced it with a statue of Gustavus.
He did a lot, actually.

It's so odd to me, as a Swede, that Gustav II Adolf is known with a latin name internationally, when it's never ever used here at home.
It did take a while to get used to it.
Similar to Charles XII or various other monarchs from other countries.
Carl von Linné is widely known as Carl Linnaeus outside of Sweden
I cant imagine why they would want to not say Adolf........
Not uncommon, it was to stake a claim by harking back to old roman traditions
“The devil is very near at the hand those who, like monarchs, are accountable to none but God for their action”
Gustavus Adolphus
_”To live is to die”_
And sure as hell there’s no better life for a warrior than to live and to die on the battlefield.
A fictional take on Gustav II Adolphus, and others of the period, is the 1632 series of novels and short stories. A modern West Virginia town is transported to Germany in 1632, and various adventures follow.
I read the entire series. The core books are great.
Sadly, Eric Flint has died, but he gave us over 20 books in that series.
@@alexanderthereacter8760 Wait what?! When?!
For fans of alternate history/historical fiction, Eric Flint's 1632 (Ring of Fire) series features GA (and Christina) prominently. Don't be intimidated by the number of books in the series. Just read 1632 and see how you like it.
The best alternate history series out there, rest in peace Eric Flint.
Sabaton, anybody?
??
Will be playing the song as soon as this video is over
More like Sabaton, everybody! ^^

Two of my forefathers were very prominent soldiers of fortune during this war. Alexander Leslie was Gustavus Adolphus' Field Marshall, and Walter Leslie was one of the colonels responsible for carrying out Von Wallenstein's assassination. A few other prominent Leslies also served under these men.

I'm so glad you did one on this legend. Thanks.
Well done! I've been waiting for this episode for some time. Thank you Simon!!
There's a great alternate history series by Eric Flint from Baen Books called 'The Ring of Fire'. It starts with "1632" and goes from there. GA one of the primary characters.
Yes..was gonna add that myself.Gustav Vasa lives on.
Eric Flint lives on. Even though he's gone now.
The horse he's riding is called Streiff, was taxidermied and is on display in The Royal Armoury here in Stockholm.
As you mentioned after my trigger happy digits posted prematurely...
Do video on Swedish warship Vasa.
Simons transition into the sponsor ads are smoother than the cream cheese on that lovely morning bagel.
We need a video on Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus a Roman who was given absolute power as a dictator TWICE and gave the power up each time as soon as he could to return to his small farm.
Loving the fact that so may comments are about Sabaton lmao. Sidenote, am Swedish and loving the fact that such a big channel are sharing a bit of our history!!
Do a video on Axel Oxenstierna. You can't understand Gustavus Adolphus' Sweden without one.
Surprisingly our country have many interesting historical figures, you should consider do more about Swedish history :)
Releasing a Swedish video on Norway's independence day XD
Hah! Didnt even think of that. What an unintentional power move.
Not independance day. National day. Celebrating the Norwegian constitution of 1814.
We are Brother countries.
Sweden have more of a beef with Danes, but it’s all in good fun.
I guess slavs have a similar relationship.

Our beef is, and possibly might always end up being with, the Danes.
The only beef we have with Norway that I know of is the way we kept our neutrality during ww2

Hey I suggested this video! So cool I've never had that happen before.
Great video, more 16th / 17th century please!
Great video Simon. Gustavus Adolphus is very underappreciated by most historians. Not that I am partial to him but he was much more influential and noteworthy than typically given credit for.
He's often referred to as the father of modern warfare, how much more credit should he be given? :) I do think he doesn't receive the fame he deserves, but my understanding is that he's very favored among historians.
Good video 👍

If anyone is interested in more details about the military reforms and tactics of Gustav Adolf, how they influenced other armies and how in turn they were partially influenced by Gustav's experience in dealing with the fearsome Polish cavalry, I recommend watching a couple of videos about it on the SandRhoman History channel.
I'd love to see a Thomas Cochrane video - the real life Hornblower!

Hey Simon, do a Biographics on Andrew Wyeth one of these days. I meant to suggest this a few weeks back during the Rembrandt video but didn’t get around to it.
According to legend, when lost in the fog he came upon a band of the enemy soldiers who shouted "Who goes there?!" To which Gustavus proudly declared "The King of Sweden!" So obviously they shot him dead.
