  • Today we show you how to set up and use the Havahart squirrel trap. Then we show you the trap in action. The first attempt I forgot to set the door locks. Next try he wasn't all the way in. Finally we got him. In the next two days we caught 5 more. We also caught a mouse. See the full live stream on this channel and don't forget to subscribe for more videos.

The only problem I have with this trap is when the squirrels have a long tail and they don't go all the way in. After they step on the trigger plate, the door comes down, but the long tail does not allow the door to lock, so they manage to get out. My solution is to use the trap with one door closed and placing peanut butter in a plastic bottle cap tied to the bottom of the trap, right under the closed door, to make them travel all the way in. That did the trick for me.

For those who think these traps don't work well, I've trapped well over 100 squirrels over the past years in my backyard. I had an issue with a few betting out, but I set a small weight on the open door, and this helps the door to close faster and with more force. Rarely does a squirrel manage to escape before the door locks. One door open works better than two.

Discouraging birds from triggering the Havahart 1083 Squirrel Trap OR stealing the Peanut Butter :
I cut a wood scrap approx 3/4 " by 1.5 " to the exact width of the trap. (I cut the ends at a slight angle.)
I do this so I can jam the wood into the trap in a way that it is just tight enough
that it can not easily be removed by an animal prying it.
I then screw 3 wood screws completely through the 3/4" width, equidistant across the 7" width of the wood scrap.
Then I get 3 16.9 oz Pepsi plastic bottles and cut the end (with the bottle cap) off. (approx 1.25 ")
Then I drill a small hole through the center of the 3 bottle caps and attach the caps to the 3 screws in the wood.
Them I screw the ends of the Pepsi bottles into their caps that are secured to the wood.
Then I place peanut butter inside the 3 plastic caps. and the ends.
    * * * * Then I take this assembly and place it backwards up against the far end of the trap. * * * *
If you do this right, the birds wont be able to access the peanut butter because
there is not enough room for their beaks to reach around and then inside the plastic bottle caps.
I also cover the entire back of the trap and the back/top portion of the trap with an approx. 7" wide "L" shaped piece
of sheet metal, so that the birds can't reach their head through the back and eat the peanut butter from the outside.
I drill holes through the sheet metal and use electrical ties to secure it to the trap.
The sheet metal on the top portion of the trap prevents the peanut butter from
getting wet when it rains hard. Squirrels tend to find food via their sense of smell
so they will find the peanut butter in the bottle caps, even when they can not see the PB.
I also place a couple of peanuts within their shells inside with the peanut butter
to further prevent the birds from getting all the PB.
Some day I should probably write a book about trapping grey squirrels.

Good tip on also setting both door locks when setting the trap. One minor issue I have noticed peanut butter attracts a lot of ants to the cage. I had to spray some ant killer around the fence where I placed my cage.

I don't know if this would work for rats. If you don't trap them the first time they will not set foot in that trap again, regardless of how much peanut butter you put.

Most people have stopped using these old fashioned 2 door traps because they are
wayyyyy too tedious to bait and then set. The 1-door Havahart EZ-Set traps are
much easier to work with. It's really annoying to me that the big box stores
    * * * * STILL * * * * stock these old fashioned traps, when the EZ-set traps are
so much better. I live about 2 blocks from a Home Depot in Delaware County, PA,
and I frequently look to see which squirrel trap they have in stock when I am shopping.
Some people probably buy these old fashioned "balanced plate" traps at the Box stores
because they have no knowledge that there is a much better Havahart trap available online.

This is only a partial solution because you still have to waste time balancing the trigger
plate and birds will still set this trap off easily depending on what bait you use.
I know you probably mean well but you are leading people to the wrong solution.

I have disposed of 462 grey squirrels and I look for the easiest and quickest solution.
I didn't want to be wasting time on my old #1025 trap because
I was too cheap to buy the correct trap. You can't catch a squirrel when there
is a bird already trapped inside. And that was happening wayyyyy too often with the 1025.

Yes, my thoughts as well. In my neighborhood, squirrels are very cleaver. When I walk outside my back door empty handed, they point and laugh at me. When I walk outside carrying anything, they scatter. I've learned to try different baits. I spread peanut butter on the plate, then put a few shelled pecans on the peanut butter. Works like a charm !

It's not that the squirrels are smarter, the problem is that larger squirrels get out, because they have long tails and the door won't lock. When people buy Havahart traps, they should use a permanent black marker to
write the model number(which is always on the box) somewhere on the trap.
Then after you throw out the box and later decide to do a video, you will know
the model number of the trap you are demonstrating and you can include that
in the video name. I have no idea why Havahart does not stamp every trap
with the model number, so people would have this info for later reference.
I would rename this video to include the model number or at least include that
info in your description. Your video would have a lot more views if people could
search on the Havahart model number to find it.
