Ever since my two large Maine Coons passed two summers ago (they were both almost 20 yrs old) been having critter infestation issues! They were both awesome mousers and yes, they ate what they caught! Been here since 2010 with both of my good buddies and I believe their presence deterred even the squirrels from being near our home.
I have a river that runs through my backyard. After catching, the cage goes into the drink for the afternoon. Also use cornbread and baking soda mix for bait just in case they manage to get out. Don 't need any reoccurring rodents/squirrels crawling back into my walls and ceiling crawl space. Hearing them run in walls at night to just too much. If they manage to nest in my home that's their fatal mistake! I don't piss in their tree nests so don't come here crapping, etc, in my walls!!!

Thank u for showing and describing the specifics of how the hook works in relation to the sensitivity of the trap...the other videos I watched didn't explain that...I like the step by step instructions in detail with visuals...I'm going to try to trap a female feral cat and get her spayed...thanks!

Discouraging birds from triggering the Havahart 1083 Squirrel Trap :
I cut a wood scrap approx 3/4 " by 1.5 " to the exact width of the trap. (I cut the ends at a slight angle.)
I do this so I can jam the wood into the trap in a way that it is just tight enough
that it can not easily be removed by an animal prying it.
I then screw 3 wood screws completely through the 3/4" width, equidistant across the 7" width of the wood scrap.
Then I get 3 16.9 oz Pepsi plastic bottles and cut the end with the bottle cap, off. (approx 1.25 ")
Then I drill a small hole through the center of the 3 bottle caps and attach the caps to the 3 screws in the wood.
Them I screw the ends of the Pepsi bottles into their caps that are secured to the wood.
Then I place peanut butter inside the 3 plastic caps. and the ends.
    * * * * Then I take this assembly and place it backwards up against the far end of the trap. * * * *
If you do this right, the birds wont be able to access the peanut butter because
there is not enough room for their beaks to reach around and then inside the plastic bottle caps.
I also cover the entire back of the trap and the back/top portion of the trap with an approx. 7" wide piece
of sheet metal, so that the birds can't reach their head through the back and eat the peanut butter from the outside.
I drill holes through the sheet metal and use electrical ties to secure it to the trap.
The sheet metal on the top portion of the trap prevents the peanut butter from
getting wet when it rains hard. Squirrels tend to find food via their sense of smell
so they will find the peanut butter in the bottle caps, even when they can not see the PB.
I also place a couple of peanuts within their shells inside with the peanut butter
to further prevent the birds from getting all the PB.
Some day I should probably write a book about trapping grey squirrels.

I hang out and drink some beer with the rats then release them in the woods the next day. They like chips and guacamole or Cheerios when were hanging. I also make sure they have some water. They seem to enjoy the car ride too.

When people buy Havahart traps, they should use a permanent black marker to
write the model number(which is always on the box) somewhere on the trap.
Then after you throw out the box and later decide to do a video, you will know
the model number of the trap you are demonstrating and you can include that
in the video name. I have no idea why Havahart does not stamp every trap
with the model number, so people would have this info for later reference.
The problem with spreading peanut butter on the trigger plate like this,
is that many species of small birds will eat peanut butter and they weigh
much less than squirrels, so they either eat all the peanut butter
and don't set the trap off ORR they will be trapped inside the cage all day
while you are at work, thinking your trap is still set for a squirrel.

Is the door once it has closed behind the animal held down by something, a spring? Or what would keep a stronger animal like a cat or raccoon from pushing it open from the inside?

Releasing is illegal in most states, check with your local wildlife office.
Not to mention, your not helping the rodent anyway. Taking it from its nest and colonies and placing it in another squirrels territory, often leads to death of said squirrel. But the main reason for not releasing squirrels is SPREADING OF ILLNESSES AND DISEASES. So do what you like, but just because your using a havaheart trap, doesn't mean your not killing or hurting said squirrel. In my opinion if they are a nuisance to you and your property, you should be able to dispatch them. But do your own research.

Geeze - appreciate the how to for the trap but a few more tips.
*Cover the cage with a blanket to calm the animal
*be as careful & quiet loading the animal to transport - no banging, shoving to limit its distress
*determine if it’s injured, if it’s a female, pregnant, or has a nest with babies- if that’s the case don’t trap
*release location- ultra important to do research for habitat with water, safety, trees, food source and minimal predator
*best option: forget trapping altogether and set up a squirrel feed station. They’re beautiful & friendly little creatures that store food. You give them a source - including the winter, and they won’t disturb you bulbs or other plants.
*also humans are to be stewards of animals- unless he was injured, the squirrel shouldn’t have been trapped and removed from his “home” but released back into his/your yard
*trap to help injured animals only & get them to a wildlife care & rehabilitation shelter

Why don't you people who are taking the time out of the day to make these video's show your viewers how to release the pest after capture? Releasing the rodent should be the most important part of the video after showing how to set the trap. Please stop wasting my time that I took out of the day to watch video's that has no conclusion.

By the way make sure you check with your state's wildlife Dept. Before you attempt a squirrel release. In most states it's illegal, the squirrel can't acclimate and most likely will die. Either from another squirrel attacking it, not finding shelter, predator's. But the main reason i am told is the possibility of passing sickness or diseases. So do what you want, but do your research. Tons of people think because they are using a havaheart trap and releasing they are helping the squirrel. Nope not really.
