We call it puli in south of India... Its very commonly used in our cuisine... Being from the coastal region, tamarind is mainly used in fish curries , coconut chutneys, marinades for fish... The ones we get here is not sweet ,its very sour.. n its a task to get good quality tamarind these days...years ago we had a tree in my grandma s home.. as kids we used to snack on the green ones... Crunchy n more sour than the ripe ones

In Arabic it’s called تمر هندي “tamar hindi” which means “indian date” … I assume that’s where the name tamarind derives from as it sounds similar?
We use it in our cuisine to add background sweet/tart notes to our stews and soups… we also make it into a drink… in Iraq we also add it to our dolma which makes it superb.

hey, can you make rujak petis with that?
it's a traditional fruits salad from west Java Indonesia, that you can eat during afternoon break, it's hot and refreshing, it's also very easy to make.
all you have to do is put a couple tamarine seed to a pestle along with 2-3 tablespoon of brown palm sugar, ¼ teaspoon salt and thai chili peppers (as much as you like, but for me 10 is perfect) with a bit of water. pound until the consistency is about the same as cooked kulfi before you put in the molding.
you can serve the sauce with any fruits you like, but it traditionally serve with cutted fruits like young almost ripe manggo, jicama, pineapples, unripe papaya, guava, or even water melon. you can mix it or dip it, but i like it just dipped
