Almost 94k subscribers and will not be long before you have 100k! You keep your slats under your cows cleaner than most dairy farmers.
Plenty of people would hide that and it would never be noticed, your honesty to show all will no doubt help others avoid making the same mistakes. Also great to be able to sort of own repairs out like that, you never seem fazed to tackle any job yourself, it gives my young lads here and myself a hell of a motivation to give new things a try. For me you must have sheets on the side, it's really important. Only other thing I would say the drainage pipes you have goung up the sides will also allow air to go inside the pit and spoil the silage.

Because if you ask any silage sheet manufacturers they want you to put sheets down the sides and they will have done countless reaserch and testing and trials. Adrian eighvin said himself when he sheeted the sides it was the best silage he ever made.
@@jamesmccabe1702 if you want another tip for sheeting pits, we all know the side sheets get ruined ever year, as i roll back the top sheet i cut it straight down the middle and thain use the top sheet to sheet down the sides the year after saving £££, and buy a new top sheet every year.
Felt your pain with the water leaks had the same issue with my own tractor once i found one another appeared 🤦🏻♂️ went as far as replacing the radiator 😩 thing is now she should be right for years to come 👌🏻

We went back to the tyres for the sides and for the slope part of our outdoor pits. We always sheet our sides but the bags just aren’t heavy enough for the areas that get less rolled with the tractor. Next year just cover the front with tyres. Not the biggest job for that area.

Good mechanic told me that putting water into modern engines will cause corrosion in the block and liners due to static build up form the engine. This will ultimately shorten the engine life. Coolant has other additives that help prevent the corrosion
Always interesting to see you working on your equipment - so much time to tracking and dealing with that leak! I think I would have choice words for the engineers who make some of the maintenance so challenging. I know there would have been impolite words from my mouth from a certain point onward. 😊 Another great post, and I'm very glad to hear you've left this last go-around with illness behind. The silage looks great even on the small screen and as far as spoilage, as you've talked about many times, everything is a learning experience to take forward for the next time. Good old Perkins engines spoilt by caterpillar accounts when they took them over! How can we save money on manufacturing? I know we’ll make this critical bypass pipe out of plastic that’ll save us some cost on each engine produced.... as long as it lasts warranty🙄 It would be interesting to know how much they charge for one of those cheaply produced plastic pipes!

Sorry that it didn't work out as hope for this year but it is very interesting to hear you work through a problem and to discuss all the different options you have tried in other years.
Reminds me of my late Dad, he was a Plumber before PTFE Tape. "Boss White and Hemp" was what he used for pipe joints when I was a boy. It's all so different now. I've just retired.
Your honesty and work ethic is a natural to you and certainly not a show off for camera.
On silage pit walls, is wastage in uncovered by shed roofs , in pits is a given. However i saw where a pit was built next to a fence or ditch as called in places and the space in between was filled by stone, just because it was a handy place to dump them, buckraking was a safer task and was a place to store the extra polythene used to seal wall while filling pit and cancelled need to put safety railing along pit wall. So i often wondered if the cost of putting an extra wall a few feet outside pit walls and filling the gap with stone or whatever would over time pay for itself by having no wastage near pit wall. Also do walls at end of pit need to be full height , instead have end sloping to 3/4 height or even 1/2 height .. just a thought.

Im so glad you post this video as my 5460 has just start to leak a little bit and shows up damp under the injection pump. Also if you remove the big bracket that holds the exhaust on the engine block there is a small plug that will drain an extra litre or so from the block
I've said it before and you've said it yourself. It's the weight. There's loads of options from wall covers etc but my favourite is if you can get an old conveyor belt from a quarry and cut it into strips.
yeah a lot of lads would say a half lorry tyre is the job but trouve only half the weight, car tyres would be as well off then

Nothing like preventative maintenance on the water systems betting you knew where the leak was all the time 😉😀.. top tip... if you haven't already lift your loader as high as it goes and measure the chrome rod showing from end of cylinder to end nuckle find yourself some channel or heavy walled angle iron and cut two to length to fit over the rams tie wrap.on when in use.. then when your wanting that loader out of the road remove attachment and lift up into the air fit angle iron ect then that arms won't fall when your under it.. stay safe 🏴 ..

You should keep coolant/anti freeze in the tractors all year round for anti corrosion as much as for its anti freeze properties

You know with all the equipment u have youd be better bolting 36 tyres together in a 6x6 format, and lift them all with the loader.
It would be a good idea to flush the pipes to the heater matrix with low tap pressure and hose, dirt tends to lodge there.them small push pipes a disaster, youd want to inspect all pipes. On the thermostat, a touch of the blowtorch will confirm if its working, good job
If you still have the tyres you should make a mat out of them. There’s a crowd that come out to the farm and bolt 8 or 10 tyres together in a square mat. You could lift them on and off with your front loader then and you won’t get splashed with water then😝 will cover the pit more and provide weight
Be ideal up that back area, must look up a the best way to put them together 👍
Seen this lad at the plowing about 10 years ago putting these car 🚗 tyres together in square mats as fast as hell might job he said he would call out to farmers to do this 😀
We use bags and green nets but have found that the front or back slope still needs tyres or we use some square bale silage to seal the slope
Advice - you should use coolant anyway, avoid using water any time. Coolant reduces risk of corrosion whereas water will make corrosion worse.
Always something with the farming but I'd say still serious stuff apart from that small bit hard to get it right every year always the next one as the say great job adrian

the pit has holes in the waals since you pord aconcrete the air must be traveling through the pit causing wast next year you should fill the holes in and this will fix the problem from Patrick in kilkerrin galway I love all your videos ps you can fix My washing machine to hope you are doing well
Did you ever think of using the old cow mats for added weight. You should be running a least a 50/50 mix of coolant and water year around. Coolant provides both freeze protection in winter and boil-over protection in summer. It not only lowers the freezing point, but raises the boiling point keeping you engine from overheating.

We have always put plastic on walls. We always cut the old sheet in half and put half on each side. We normally roll it up on the top of the wall and push a tyre into it out over the wall threw the safety bar uprights. Loader driver prefers it that way and might stay on the wall better

Adrian just a we thought if you know any hauliers about check if they have any old curtains of curtain side trailors they might charge about 50+ for them i think if you had something like that might help with your weight to seal there about 45x9ft just a mad thought my mind doing overtime keep up the good work and keep safe
They must be cueing up to buy a second hand piece of machinery or tractor after you finished with it.
Your silo is ideal for concrete panels across the end, you can roll right up to them and also give you a bit more storage

I’ve always intended to buy a pressure test kit. I got mechanic past in the summer to check for water leak. Found right away neat top of rad. I will never buy an aftermarket radiator again. Fitment was a shocker and probably cost more with extra labour.
Last pipe leak you found was most likely the 1st piece fitted on a Monday morning or the last job at finishing time on Friday 😅😅
Off topic from this video, I would like to offer an idea about the cottage rebuild. Maybe there is a school nearby that teaches construction skills to high school students. Maybe the students could be used as free labor in return for the experience. Maybe, since the cottage is offered as a school project, the cost of material for the rebuild might be helped by government grants. Just a thought.
Brilliant video adrian i have had a bad week here at home with tractors i had forward and reverse give up turns out its not a cable but something far bigger its a 10 grand fix and while i was using my back up massey 50hx the drive shaft decided it no longer wanted to be part of the machine and fell to the ground so if it was raining soup at the moment id have a fork🙈🙈🙈🙈

You might of seen it before but why not bolt your tyres together into big squares mats. Then you can lift them on and off the tractor and loader. might help the front of your pit to add weight and save labour as you can use the tractor. Another great video how’s the 50B coming along?

Regarding the side sheets, and working on your own. Could you set out the side sheets earlier on a calm day, tie some points with bale string, drop the sheets, weigh them down, so you only have to pull them back up on the day and hopefully easier in the wind. The sand bags would work well or some detergent drums. It’s assuming of course you can be there for the first load or two.
It’ll just be remembering to do it in among everything else!

I put alot lorry tyres all over silo for weight I also bulldoze plastic and tyres back from face with telehandler as in my opinion weight is everything
3 years ago I would of agreed with you 100% in regards to the weight, but then when we seen the results of the first year using this system and how good the silage was changed my mind . Yes weight is important for sure but keeping the air out in the first place seems to work, fierce handy compared to the heavy tyres.

I would say if you had checked that hose going from the expansion tank that it was your problem and it would explain why it was not leaking all

If you want to find a water leak on a tractor, the best way is to put the engine under heavy load. Once I had a MF 399 that had a water leak and the only time it leaked was when it was on the mower or pulling a load up a steep hill that was a mile long. It was a pin hole in a rubber pipe that would only leak when the engine was under strain.
A pressure tester would also be a mighty tool here, i friend of mine has one but unfortunately it broke a few weeks back.
Well Adrian ya wouldn't try the easy fix sand bag mats we've had them for about 3 years now and thay work great.
That tractor seems to be designed to be awkward to work on. You still have the right to repair but they don't make it easy. So many panels and everything crammed into awkward spots. Like in modern cars replacing a headlight bulb is a workshop job. Way back in the day you had the very simple swivel hood on a tractor with clips that you could release and pull it forward. Now it looks like something they don't want you doing. That could have been several attempts and a lot of work in a repair shop. Not a wonder that the big boys make more on spares and repairs than on tractor sales. You have a great attitude to work on it.
Could you not put scaffolding poles down the sides with the sand bags on top to make a constant edge rather than like the bags with gaps in between? They could help keep the air out of centre

Just as well your Dad did not open up the pit before you were ready to film it. Tom Pemberton got very upset when his Dad Andrew Pemberton jumped in before Tom was there. Proper upset with his dad for ruining the unveil of the Maize 🌽 Silage. 😊😊😊

Maybe with the bonnet off the tractor is cooling better and not putting up the same water pressure to make it leak.????
Maybe the engine runs cooler when you take the covers off and that's why the leak doesn't appear.
