- Sophia Wallace talks about 'Cliteracy', a critically acclaimed project addressing citizenship and body sovereignty using the medium of text-based objects, unauthorized street installation and interactive sculptural forms.
Sophia Wallace is an American conceptual artist and photographer. Through the use of images, video and mixed media, she explores alterity. Wallace’s focus is how otherness is constructed visually on the gendered, sexualized, racialized body. Wallace has presented her work in major exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad, including Kunsthalle Wien Museum, Art Basel Miami, Scope NY, Taschen Gallery and Aperture Gallery among others. She was awarded PDN's Curator Award, Critic's Pick by the Griffin Museum, American Photography AP-25 and ArtSlant's Showcase Award. Her work has been reviewed in BLOUIN Art Info, The New Yorker, Salon, Huffington Post, Fast Company, Hyperallergic and Bitch Magazine, among other publications.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
I LOVE that Sophia Wallace said, "I want to make a sculpture that lasts thousands of years. I want to work with metal and stone so that we don't have to have this conversation again and again." Point blank. Period. I am so thankful that she took on this project. Seeing this is very healing.
I'm not just a socket. I have a switch. And I deserve to be turned on.
Sophia Wallace, God bless your soul. TEDx Talks, you're Heaven-sent. Thank you for creating a platform for such groundbreaking discussions.
Love it

YES!
you beleive that BS?
@@ddmound what BS are you talking about?
A courageous undertaking: struggling against 10,000 years of shame, guilt, and paternalism. I found myself wondering why she is taking it to such lengths, and then I realized that the pendulum has swung so far into the darkness that it will take herculean efforts to return it toward the light.

@@mikem6176 About what? She made four comments and several points. You don't address any of them, and so your retort just hangs there in mid-air, going nowhere.
@@mikem6176
She did!
And quite eloquently, I might add.
She used so many words, so innocently🤣 the rub of it
This was amazing. Thank you SO MUCH to Sophia Wallace for having the guts, the insight, and the skill to execute this huge, important, and inspiring project. We need to change how we talk about female sexuality; we need to re-evaluate the way we've systematically hidden from it; and we need to take huge steps towards re-educating the public about the vulva, the clitoris, and the way the female body is more than just a baby factory and a "sword-holder."
there is no willingness among women to learn how to give a man pleasure
joelface , So many men especially that have very little knowledge about how the whole works.
joelface I agree. But her models are not anatomically correct. She’s now saying I don’t “get” that her art is “conceptual” and “stylized.” Personally I think knowing real anatomy is most important. I didn’t realize we needed sculptures for that bc I learned it in 2007. 👀
@Pop Lyle the world isn't that well educated about genitals in general but they know and present the male one more. Boys at school are emboldend enough to draw penises all over the place. The understanding of the reproductive system and menstruation of women among men is quite bad because boys are often put in a different class when it comes to learn about this. Some don't even know that women pee from a different places then they menstruate from. I doubt that men know more accurate facts about female anatomy then vice versa.
@@rene3759 You're so correct! There needs to be better education..
Wow!!!!!!! Brilliant talk! I can not believe I'm watching this talk only in 2019! I'm grateful anyway! We must talk about it!!! Thank you Sophia!!!

Excellent and tastefully done presentation Sophia Wallace. At 85 years old I still get excited when people live for their dreams. It is so rewarding to live and work for what we believe in. You are courageous and creative. Please continue your quest. You will help the world become a better more human place.
She's 100% right. We have some positive changes to make in our culture.

You are an amazing woman! Thank you for educating us all about this most important aspect of a woman’s body. This is truly female liberation and empowerment! I salute your noble work.
Well done well thought out. Thank you for being present and standing up and speaking out.
What an brilliant idea, cliteracy is. I never knew my own body and am glad there are amazing people out there who really beieve in what they are doing.
I'm learning something here. I didn't know this at all. I'm glad I found this.
Truly moving TED Talk and touching she was crying at the end of it. You can really see her passion for the subject, and one that needs more talking about. Sex Education needs to come a long way more in this country.
Bravo... thank you for your commitment to language. Your sense of humor, and putting an end to shame, for all girls, and woman. Parts, whole and complete...
Thank you TED Talks, you enlighten us all.
Best Ted talk I’ve managed to sit through and enjoy in a long while.

What an incredible piece of work, and very educational! The sculpture is particularly beautiful. I loved the word play too! Thank you.
Thank you Tedx for all the great talks you put on but this is by far one of my favorites ❤ this girl is a genius
Of course, our Goddess Sophia is the most appropriate to deliver and initiate this conversation! This was an amazing TED Talk!
Outstanding work. I must meet this inspirational tenacious warrior. Bravo Sophia 🙏❤️
Extremely important and necessary information in a very intelligent presentation; Thank You Sophia Wallace !!!
It's 2020. WHY DOESN'T THIS HAVE A MILLION VIEWS?
it is building up momentum and may have a billion views in a few years - at least i hope so
Thank you Sophia, you are beautiful and I believe that you have found your Magnum Opus. I’m impressed and pleased to see your work in the public square. We need to get people appreciating the whole and wholesome design of the human reproductive systems. So glad seeing someone redressing the balance of knowledge. You really don’t know what the World really needs until you see or experience it. I’m praying people everywhere will get the message ....
Well done Sophia. It's way pass time that we had this discussion..
I am now a committed member of the Cliterati. Well done, Sophie for dragging us all into the 21st century.

Thanks you mam for educating us about us
Thank you for educating us. I'd love to have a necklace or a small sculpture, and I will send this to friends. You have done a wonderful service to humanity!
She was so right that mothers should talk to their sons about it. I learned that when two of my sons were having some marital problems and I explained it to them. This was the one subject my husband wouldn't talk to them about, even though he understood it very well.
So right on! It's what's been missing in our society.
All power and all good things your way.
I learned something new today! Very good TED Talk!!!!
If you ever come to Vancouver Canada with your exhibit, I would be there to experience it along with my whole family. I think you would be well received in this town.
Beautiful, desperately-needed presentation that I can not more agree with. In every school. In every bedroom. Yes!
Thank you for a beautiful presentation. This is the most important mission and work you've ever done. Thank you for spreading the truth, for making women feel beautiful and whole again. Keep going! Keep teaching. This was great. Your art work is great too.
tbraskey it’s not truth. Half this talk is fake news and her models are anatomically incorrect

when did she?!?! maybe english not being my mother tongue didn't help with some of this references! Also that I don't know the songs she referenced!
Thank you for your talk, your art & the conversation stirred. Awareness is bliss. There is beauty in women & men that needs to be explored & enjoyed daily with all of our senses. My man knows every inch of my body & I know every inch of his body. Our intertwinement of body & soul is pure heaven on earth. Our minds & hearts are open to total self awareness.

Alice Walker's docufictional novel "Possessing the Secret of Joy" if you want a personal account of everything cliteracy... Great talk!!!!!
Excellent work! Thank you for answering questions, I didn't even know I had. We celebrated things like "downing the Berlin Wall", yet our willful fear and ignorance thrives over topics like this. Something to talk about....Nay!... SHOUT about!
much respect
THANK YOU !!!💫✨💖👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It’s about time this topic is addressed. Good for you for working to teach the world on this most important topic. It’s about time this knowledge reaches all humans.
If you just sit on your derriere and wait for it to come to you, then you deserve to experience the orgasm gap. If you want something, go after it, learn all you can about it, then you won't have cause to complain because you will obtain what you sought. Lazy complainers get nothing they don't deserve.

@@tanyadebeer4836 She is talking openly about a subject that is still taboo in 2018. As she says at 0:54 "It taints the speaker." She will be know and referenced for her entire life for this work she is producing so early in her career. Bravery is choosing a behavior which exposes oneself to attack despite the personal risk.
