- JAN DE ROOY gano el dakar en el 87 y en el 88 nos regalo este adelantamiento a ari vattanen ,imagen inedita ya que ahora los camiones estan limitados a 150 kmh , este año fue triste por la perdida del navegador Kees Van Loevezijn que fallecio al salir despedido de la cabina en el camion de van de rijt compañero de ekipo de jan de rooy con el otro daf ,el proximo año estuvo prohibido correr en camiones hasta que regularon el reglamento para la categoria.

I will never forget this wonderful truck !! I was a kid, living near Versailles, and I remember on the first of January when the Daf arrived in the street : big klaxon, big noise and the apartment's windows were moving....!!! Great !

Vatanen was hitting the steering wheel in frustration screaming how the F*^#$% is a truck overtaking me. Dramatic how that era of racing came to an end, the 80"s and early 90's were the epitomy of racing and saw the biggest drama's in racing. Toivonen in group B, Loevestijn in Dakar and Senna. Unrivaled, unlimited powerfull machines and, let's be honoust, crazy skilled drivers that put today's vehicles to shame. Yes, racing needs safety regulations, but it does not need lawyers to race. Rules should be limited to driver and co driver safety solely. Anything else they can come up with should be ok, no racecar driver gets behind the wheel and expects not to make it home again, they accept the risk and should trust the engineers to get them home safe not the rules.
Don't forget Group C racing in the 80's too. The cars did approach 400km/h on the Mulsanne straight at LeMans. In 1988 the WM Peugeot was clocked at 405km/h, Hence the chicanes were added from 1990 onward.
1983-1989 were probably the best racing years ever. Turbo cars in F1 - and totally unlimited until 1986 (no limit for the boost = 1300hp). 1986 was also the last year for the monster Group B rally cars. The Audi S1 E2 developed roughly 600hp .
The Group C endurance racers like Porsche 962, Jaguar XJR-9 and Sauber-Mercedes C9 topped 390-400km/h at LeMans.
And in the Paris-Dakar rally it was still unlimited and "anything goes". Hence the monster DAF 95 Turbotwin X1 with its whopping 1200hp and with a top speed of 240km/h.

I was standing near the house on mulsane staight in 1988 at 4 a clock.
I could feel the cars in my shoes on the ground.
I was there and this daf was just a crazy beast..great memories for sure
Jan De Rooy,venció en la categoria de camiones del París-Dakar´87 al volante de su DAF,pero la victória del año siguiente de 1988 fué para el checoslovaco Lopraís al volante de un TATRA,el primer fabricante de camiones de la Europa del Este que ganaba el París-Dakar y todo debido al fallecimiento de Kees Van Loevezijn y de Van de Rijt en aquel trágico accidente.

I was very happy to see this wonderful DAF and I remember Van de Rijt's one too...!!! And the cat reaction 🤣🤣 because of the Motor's noise and the klaxon....! RIP Jan !
2.2.2024; I just read the sad news: Jan De Rooy passed away.
Jan de Rooij: Rest in Peace.
Because there are not enough helicopters to follow every vehicle and Jan de Rooy did not crash, it was the other (similar) truck from his team that crashed. Jan de Rooy (experienced driver) warned the other driver(first time Dakar driver) that the truck became unstable on short humps above a certain speed, but the other driver probably ignored his advice and went even faster. These trucks were literally beasts, they could achieve 140mph on sand!! And keep in mind they are not very aerodynamic...

Der helle Wahnsinn, heute unvorstellbar, dass alle Klassen in Konkurrenz zueinander antreten, die Dakar Rallye ist eh nur noch eine gleichmäßigkeitsfahrt für alternde Rennfahrer, der Spirit von damals ist eh dem schnöden Mammon gewichen, wer nicht in einem Werksteam fährt, hat keine Chance, schade das es so weit gekommen ist. 😣

(Ahora todo es "delicado, cuidado y protegido)....ya no se juega como antes.

Hola Salvador pienso que el motivo es por garantizar la seguridad de los participantes ,Así como este año ya había algunos tramos diferentes para las motos del resto de vehículos.

Yes, imagine being in what is considered one of the finest rally cars ever designed with an already proven racing record and being overtaken by a *truck* !!
That's not something you see everyday. Vatanen must have told this story to all his friends and family. "And there I was driving over 200km/h flat out in the Sahara desert when the DAF truck catches me and drives past!"

The only weird thing is that if they had helicopter views of the rally, why weren't they able to capture the accident?
The accident was the ohter DAF truck, not De Rooy that overtakes Vatanen. There were no helicopters to follow every single vehicle. I also think the accident was in a different stage.
I still think they could've did better with the helicopters and yes I know that their no very aerodynamic.
