I will never forget this wonderful truck !! I was a kid, living near Versailles, and I remember on the first of January when the Daf arrived in the street : big klaxon, big noise and the apartment's windows were moving....!!! Great !

Que grande Jan de Rooy, no solo construía y diseñaba los camiones sino que también los pilotaba. Insuperable!!!!

Le premier proto, Daf N2800, jaune, à 2 cabines, le Bicéphale, c'était l'OVNI du Dakar de 1984, je le revois, passer de la piste par une ornière sur la route, fumant et totalement déchaîné, pendant les années 80, après il y a eu the Bull, vainqueur ici, c'était vraiment le Dakar avec un Grand D.... après, le professionnalisme a pris les pas sur l'aventure, comme dans tout les sports mécaniques.... c'est comme ça...😑

Der helle Wahnsinn, heute unvorstellbar, dass alle Klassen in Konkurrenz zueinander antreten, die Dakar Rallye ist eh nur noch eine gleichmäßigkeitsfahrt für alternde Rennfahrer, der Spirit von damals ist eh dem schnöden Mammon gewichen, wer nicht in einem Werksteam fährt, hat keine Chance, schade das es so weit gekommen ist. 😣

Vatanen was hitting the steering wheel in frustration screaming how the F*^#$% is a truck overtaking me. Dramatic how that era of racing came to an end, the 80"s and early 90's were the epitomy of racing and saw the biggest drama's in racing. Toivonen in group B, Loevestijn in Dakar and Senna. Unrivaled, unlimited powerfull machines and, let's be honoust, crazy skilled drivers that put today's vehicles to shame. Yes, racing needs safety regulations, but it does not need lawyers to race. Rules should be limited to driver and co driver safety solely. Anything else they can come up with should be ok, no racecar driver gets behind the wheel and expects not to make it home again, they accept the risk and should trust the engineers to get them home safe not the rules.

Jan De Rooy,venció en la categoria de camiones del París-Dakar´87 al volante de su DAF,pero la victória del año siguiente de 1988 fué para el checoslovaco Lopraís al volante de un TATRA,el primer fabricante de camiones de la Europa del Este que ganaba el París-Dakar y todo debido al fallecimiento de Kees Van Loevezijn y de Van de Rijt en aquel trágico accidente.

I will never forget this. I was a little kid, my father was a truck driver and drove a DAF ... The first car I drove was a DAF. I'm now a bachelor of automotive engineering, partly because of these images. Proud To Be Dutch! Ik zal dit beeld nooit vergeten. Ik was nog een kleine jongen, mijn vader was truckchauffeur en reed met een DAF... De eerste auto waarin ik reed was een DAF. Ik ben nu een automotive engineer, mede door deze beelden. Trots om Nederlander te zijn! Я никогда не забуду этого. Я был маленьким ребенком, мой отец был водителем грузовика и поехали DAF ... Первый автомобиль я ездил был DAF. Я сейчас бакалавр автомобильной техники, отчасти потому, что из этих образов. Гордится тем, что голландский!

I still think they could've did better with the helicopters and yes I know that their no very aerodynamic.

Because there are not enough helicopters to follow every vehicle and Jan de Rooy did not crash, it was the other (similar) truck from his team that crashed. Jan de Rooy (experienced driver) warned the other driver(first time Dakar driver) that the truck became unstable on short humps above a certain speed, but the other driver probably ignored his advice and went even faster. These trucks were literally beasts, they could achieve 140mph on sand!! And keep in mind they are not very aerodynamic...

The only weird thing is that if they had helicopter views of the rally, why weren't they able to capture the accident?

Bollocks to Jan De Rooy . That guy employ ex eastern block drivers that get paid peanuts ! The drive fucking sheds and at the same time, the Hero De Rooy spend a fortune on Paris Dakar Rallye ! The best of that movie : He doesn't know how to open a bottle of champagne !
