    This is not for everyone as you said, my friend and dad are musicians, so they always buy a new soundcard because they also use the MIDI synthetizers on the soundcard which is never good in a motherboard's card, most of the times you can't upload sound fonts banks to an integrated soundcard.

    As a Video / Audiophile I have always used a sound card and always will. Currently I use a a Omega Eclaro out to Acoustic research optical cable to a Yamaha rx-v467 out to a Paradigm CT-70 5.1 speaker set with 2 PDR Ten subs. Calibrated the whole setup in room with a pro SPL Meter and touched it up with a very mild EQ. Playing BF4 , Crysis 3 or many other games on it is a surreal experience for me. Each gun shot hits you in the chest and every last detail in the sound coming at you from all corners of the room in perfect real time direction is a addicting thing indeed. So yeah i can totally appreciate this sound card. Nice to see that effort being put back into sound cards, I dig it a lot !! Another great vid my friend and take care of your self to ok.

    The nicest thing about the modern soundblaster hardware is they offer a 'Direct Mode', which bypasses ALL DSP, it is a direct path from the DAC directly to the audio output. I wish they would advirtise this instead of all the DSP garbage, but DSP garbage is what sells. 'Audiophiles' should also be happy with the direct mode it offers, as it really does give you absolutely clean audio out.

    I have the Creative Soud Blaster Z sound card & I can tell you that other than the aesthetic & RGB it's the same & much cheaper. The software looks different (since it's got a new UI), but 90% of what you showed is on the SBZ... aside from another 4db & slightly lower bitrate.
    In the UK the new card is £119 on their website & mine is £79.99, I know where I'd spend the change... beer tokens!

      Hi there. Do these cards truely by pass the motherboard? The reason I'm looking into at least the verry least this AE 5 is because I've had it with the silly Realtek gimiks. Now I do to be fair have a Zoom H6 and yes in interface mode it does use an ASIO driver thus it's all true pure H6 audio. Thing is as I said I've had it with Dell audio and I don't wana use the H6 too much as an interface cause then you can't obviously use it as a recorder. But what say you? Are these sound cards worth it? Or does even a prosumer recorder and interface like the H6 beat their ass?

    I already have Sound Blaster Z, almost identical features. Thank god, No rgb since it was before RGB craze. I'm more into looking at my game then looking at my case.
    Also paying 150$+ Tax&Import fees for just a marginal gain doesn't seems good enough.
    Uh I almost forgot, no Optical Audio In with AE5. So I won't be able to capture sound from my Consoles. Which is a huge back step towards features I think.
    Edit: Felt it was too dark comment so little bit clearing the comment; It is a good card, but not good enough to upgrade the existing ones.
    You'll get amazing sound quality over any gaming motherboard that's for sure.

    I can see soundcards make a comback only if the maker of games dosome tweaking for sounds in game to hear the game audio through the settings that they want you to experience it. It would just be a sound engineer developing some preset audio settings and maybe even developing an equalizer that chnges during different moments of the game to add a cool evolving role in games. I see that function as giving a new gaming experience they can build on.

    I would certainly not say this is the last sound card you will ever need. No optical input, the mic is shared with line in, no DTS/DDL on the optical out (granted that bypasses the nice DACs on this), and then we have Creative's absolutely stellar support track record to deal with. (see the sarcasm there) You can rest assured that in just a few years time Creative will drop support for this like nearly every card before it, leaving you in a world of driver hell trying to get it to work with the latest version of Windows 10.
    While this is no doubt one of the finest 5.1 cards out there, and creative's audio software is what really makes it shine (when you get it to work that is), its price point is a bit high considering both what company we are dealing with and key features that you may end up still needing your onboard sound to make up for. I honestly wish Creative would just license SBX software for use on any hardware. Think how awesome it would be to have all those features over an uncompressed 7.1 stream though your video card's HDMI. I thought AMD's TrueAudio would be just that, but I think that just sorta disappeared.

    People should just know that it's better to buy good speakers than a sound card. My personal choice was to go with a half decent set of Alesis studio monitors. I also tried very expensive monitors from a fairly well known boutique manufacturer which lasted less than a month. And external sound cards might also be a better option. Ultimately the on-board sound was good enough for me after I got my current monitors.
    And I've tried sound cards. I really have. I just believe extra sound amp should not come from within the box. I've had OS bugs, MRI, sound glitches. But I trust your review on this one though. You clearly are aware of the issues that often come up.

    The X-Fi APU is still the best, fastest and most advanced sound chip Creative ever designed. No chip since then has better hardware accelerated 3D sound. Yes, these amps and signal to noise levels are better, but the X-Fi's were good as well.
    When you ever played games like Thief II with EAX and positional 3D audio you know what I mean. Too bad MS basically killed off hardware accelerated 3D sound since Vista.

      @@shaolin95 The SID was nice for it's time and only having 3 channels forced game devs to use arpeggios and other interesting workarounds, but there is nothing your SID chip can do that even a 486 DX2-66 cannot emulate in real time in software pretty accurately. You can say, oh, that doesn't sound like the real thing; but neither did the real thing; not two damned SID chips sounded quite alike; if you used the filters you were especially fucked, what was awesome on one C64 sounded harsh and crappy on another.
      Vortex 2 would technically also be reduced to just computation, despite doing some analog trickery, nobody has yet matched its 3D positional audio. Not even close.

    For all the rest, don't neglect the sound when you game and play movies and shows on your computer. It is about as important as what you see. Invest like $100-200 in a good heaphone and the same in a good sound solution. It is worth it and it lasts a lot longer than a graphics card.

Game Mode with CMSS-3D upmixing for games without surround sound. But, when the time comes for upgrading to a new mobo. I would likely get the Z series. It's software isn't as cluttered like the AE-5's.

    But the biggest issue is most headsets are USB vs analog out of the system so they use their own internal card rendering the whole thing pointless.
    If your system has an SPDIF / Optical out you can get a headset to feed off of that which is a good deal just pricey.

  • @Pentium100MHz
    @Pentium100MHz Před 5 lety

    Even if that sound card has a headphone amp, I would use my separate headphone amp, for the simple reason that I always want a hardware volume control for both headphones and speakers.
    If my PC suddenly plays a loud sound I can turn the volume down very quickly when there is a volume control pot. Finding the menu option may take longer or be impossible (if the PC also freezes at the time).
    So, ESI U22XT for my laptop and a headphone amp for my home.

    Disabling the onboard audio in the BIOS. It’s usually the simple things.
    However, to really get the most out of this sound card, you’re going to have to spend some time in SB Command & Connect 2 to get the sound where you want it depending on your speakers. Once that’s all dialed in, though... awesome little card.

      The advantage of an external DAC is that with and external DAC you are outside all the eletronic noise that goes on inside the case. This card does have external shielding to reduce that, but it goes only so far. At least thats the theory. If your case has an optic output, I recommend going external DAC.

    • @soylentgreenb
      @soylentgreenb Před 5 lety

      If you’re talking just sound quality I would recommend basic shitty motherboard audio. The SNR, sample rate and bit depth (even 16 bit is well beyond enough) is good enough that you will never tell the difference in a double blind test. There’s a reason people buy 99.999998% oxygen free copper cables for $1000 per meter when they couldn’t tell the difference between that and wire coat hanger. That reason is to signal to others that they care more about audio than they do and to feel they have the best.
      Spend your money where you get good value like a nice pair of headphones. And even there, if you can get semi-open instead of fully closed you can get descent head phones relatively cheap.

    • @AdamKafei
      @AdamKafei Před 5 lety +1

      That depends on what you're listening to, for me going from the default settings on my laptop's realtek chip to it's best quality was a noticeable difference, then moving (out of necessity due to a broken mic input) to an Asus Xonar U7 USB sound card was also a noticeable difference in sound quality and I would argue it was well worth the £60 I spent on it.
      That said, I do agree in principle that spending obscene amounts of money on anything isn't going to get you much value.

    I stopped using extension sound cards back in the mid 2000s. And it was all because of drivers.
    My first negative experience was to find out that my Creative SB card will not work with Windows 95. I had to buy a new one despite the old one was working fine.
    Same thing happened again with the new card with Windows 98. This time I was experienced enough (and internet was more widespread already) to make it work with a little hack on the 95 drivers.
    But it was a game over for this card again with Windows XP.
    I already had an onboard sound at that time, but anyway I bought yet again a new one. And... you guessed it, it was out of support and not working after a new version of Windows - it was the x64 XP.
    So I stopped buying sound cards. I never bought one from different manufacturer (there wasn't a big choice in Bulgaria anyway). That's a frustrating support experience. I never had it with printers, graphic cards (even a very old ATI card is still able to run on Windows 10 with minor tricks) or other. I was stuck on upgrades only by sound cards and scanners.
    Thank God Realtek rules the market now. Their onboard chips are supported perfectly on any system - no matter Windows, Linux of BSD. They just work.

  • @liquidone2908

    Not quite the last one, we have the ae9 now which I am considering an upgrade from this to that as the ae5 kicks soundcard ass so much. The 5.1 dac/amp is a beast and a few notable things on ae9, gold capacitors they claim enhance bass, full DSD support and optical output that actually supports 5.1, the ae5 disappointed with 2.0 optical and no DD or DTS 5.1 decoding. So I thinking the ae9 is a worthy upgrade from an already excellent soundcard (and no, I don't use the rgb strips :))

    Other than that, I bought this card recently (before watching this video) and it really is a great sound card. The direct headphone mode really does sound great with lossless files and the sound profiles really do make content pop. Just be careful! Some of those profiles have the "smart volume", which adjusts the volume automatically depending on the situation, set to a very high level by default. So if you switch profiles while say watching a movie it might get *SUPER* loud as soon as you switch the profile! My system is set to 34% volume and my player software was set to very low volume and I still almost felt like my ear drums would rupture...

    I have used Creative Audio solutions from the SB16 all the way up to X-Fi Titanium PCIe.
    Their cards always sound better than on board audio, UNTIL THEY DON"T. The last 2 cards were horrible. The 2nd to last would randomly scramble the channels. The Last card did not survive the windows 10 upgrade. Even with a clean install of windows 10 Creator edition and the latest driver, I would get crackling in the audio randomly, The card works fine in Windows 7. I just don't think creative is producing quality drivers for the products anymore.
