I served two tours in Iraq and three in Afghanistan with the US Army Rangers. Let me tell you that none of us loves war. I'm right there with you. In 2003 my unit was pinned down by heavy enemy fire in the Korangal Valley in Afghanistan while performing an exploratory mission that I can't elaborate on further. We called in air support to hit enemy positions. Three A-10s soon arrived and leveled those hills repeatedly over the course of the next two hours. Let me tell you, that brrrrrt is music to the ears of any soldier on the ground. It almost brings you to tears knowing that you're going to be okay with that monster of an aircraft circling above you. Not everyone in our unit made it out alive and I am still haunted by that day, but credit those airmen and women in the A-10s for saving my life.

Hi Diane! The A-10 is my favorite warplane still in operation. In the late '80s, I lived in Tucson and happened to stay in a house that was in the flight path of Davis - Monthan Air Force Base, so I was privileged to see A-10s every day. I became so attuned to the sound that I could tell if it was one, two or three in the flight. One afternoon, I was kicked back on the couch and heard something coming that was monstrous in comparison, so I jumped up and skedaddled outside in time to see a C-5A transport plane going by. Huge. Anyway, we can all hate war and love warriors without being duplicitous. You may be aware that we Americans have many privately owned firearms for a variety of reasons. Frequently, politicians try to come up with arguments why our rights should be abrogated and we should turn in our guns. Many people have said they're willing to give them up, as long as the criminals go first. That's the reason we keep what we have. When the other countries stop being aggressive and dangerous to their neighbors and our friends, we can disarm our country.
Just for a bit of perspective, the GAU-8 rotary cannon in the A-10 fires 30mm depleted uranium projectiles. We use the non metric system for most of our measurements here, so many people don't have a concept of the size of an individual round from that gun. The 30mm is over an inch in diameter. Each cartridge is close to a foot long. Individual cost per shell is far from inexpensive. All ordnance in use nowadays is highly expensive, so the A-10 is relatively economical due to its durability and accuracy. Of all the planes currently in service, the A-10 is the one most in direct control by its pilot. That's why it can be flown like an aerobatic plane, turning on a dime. The planes in combat have been shot up in fashions that would seem unsurvivable, but they've come back with their pilots intact. Plenty of reason to love this beast.

I was a USAF TACP, and I've controlled many training airstrikes with the Warthog. I remember when I was on the bomb range with an Army unit when I learned it was the Company Commander's birthday. So, I coordinated with the flight lead for a high threat scenario with a smoke grenade as the pop-up point. In a high threat attack, plains fly low to then pop-up at the last second, acquire the enemy, and then roll in to attack
I then hooked up with the Commander under the guise of needing his input on where to redirect the fighters.
When he asked about the aircraft, I smiled and told him it was a surprise and to consider it a personal birthday present from THE USAF to him.
When the flight lead ordered the smoke, the commander himself threw the grenade and announced, "Green smoke. " Next thing we knew, Warthogs were popping up from any which direction and rolling in targets. The commander was giggling like a schoolgirl while redirecting the re-attacks. After the strikes were finished, the commander borrowed my radio to thank the lead for the best damn birthday present ever. Lead said thanks and invited the commander to the O- Club after the deployment.

The Air Force has been trying to get rid of it literally from the moment it was created. The Air Force hates doing the Close Air Support mission, it much prefers bombers and fighters. However, the Air Force is also petty af and refuses to allow the Army's Aviation branch to fly fixed wing aircraft. The best solution would be for the Air Force to abandon the mission it hates and allow the Army take over the mission it has a vested interest in.

    @davidwillford3119 Před rokem +17

They were trying to get rid of the A-10 back when I was still in the Air Force, and I retired over 22 years ago. The Air Force is basically run by fighter pilots, and they put a priority on air-to-air stuff (like you saw in Top Gun) and not ground support that the A-10 specializes in. Because of this, they want to replace the specialist A-10 with a dual-role fighter like the F-35, which can also do air-to-air. Those who want to keep the A-10 (or replace the aging fleet with a more modern close air support aircraft) argue that the F-35 cannot do as good of a job in the close air support role, and that a specialist aircraft like the A-10 can do a better job at a lower cost. Oh, and on the issue of war, while I certainly don't enjoy or like war, my time in combat zones gave me a sense of accomplishment that it is difficult to duplicate in the civilian world. Maybe firefighters and the like get a similar feeling.

Close air support will be needed, regardless if your adversary is Taliban, Chinese, N Korean or Russian. The air threat level is obviously higher, but the US & NATO fight for air supremacy, which allows accurate air-ground weapons deployment, IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO FRIENDLIES. Oh we also need you to make it fly really close to the ground where anyone with any type of gun, rpg, missile or Mrs O’Leary’s clothesline is trying to blow it out of the sky. Also we need it to be highly maneuverable and super strong. We also need it to be extreme resilient, like, put in three backup systems for the controls in case the primary and first two backups become damaged. It is the most over engineered, over built, tank killing, flying death delivery device ever known to man. It drinks 50 year old Irish Whisky and pisses light beer. My unprofessional opinion is that the A-10 is built for ground support and is very good at it. The F-35 is not built for ground support and its pilots don't do much ground support training. The F-35 also costs way more. I think that building some new Warthogs would be a good idea. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I think getting rid of the A-10 is like traveling without an umbrella, first-aid kit, flashlight, jack, and spare tire in your car: stupid and asking for trouble.

FYI, if you were not already aware:
Colose Air Support (CAS) is when an aircraft provides firepower (bombs, missles, cannon rounds) to support ground units (infantry, tanks, etc.). In more than a few occasions, the unit requesting CAS is very close to the enemy, as in a few hundred meters. As such, the guys on teh ground would much prefer an aircraft fly slow and low, a few thousand to a few hundred feet above the ground, than a fancy new jet that will be flying fast and maybe a couplke of tens of thousand of feet above the ground. While we have weapon system that are accurate enough to hit within a few meters, (and definitely within 30 meters), ther is the issue of the pilot knowing wher the friendlies are and where the bad guys are. And then tehr eare situations tha are "danger close", which occurs when the enemy are really close and the any use of weapons systems must be especially precise. Imagine if you ar ein one building and teh enemy is in the building across the street. The soldier on the ground would REALLY appreaciate it if the pilot knows exactly who is in which building. That may be tough at 10,000 feet.
That was a flight simulator for the A-10. The US has filight simulators for all its combat aircraft. The cost for actually flying US combat aircraft can be in the tens of several thousands of dollars per hour. The A-10 flight costs are relatively cheap at ONLY about $6,000 per hour. 1200 hours would be the equivalent of $7 million dollars in flight costs alone. Flight simulators may cost a few dollars per hour.
Did I mention the US is stupid rich?

They usually work in pairs so they can cover each other as they make their attack runs. During training in Northern Germany, we would watch the "Hawgs" working less than 100 feet over our heads! When you would follow the attacking plane in your sights, his wing man already had you in his sights!!! Not only are they lethal beyond imagination, they are also built to take massive damage and still be able to fly, returning their pilots to base alive and safe. It's just an old man's opinion, but to replace such an effective ground support aircraft with a high speed, high cost jet fighter is a huge blunder.

As other comments have noted, starting a new A10 program would be expensive and probably require the Air Force to reduce the number of F35s the top brass want. I am a former US Air Force TACP. My job was to find targets for the A-10s. I was assigned to the Army and when they needed some real firepower brought to bear, I found the targets, requested the air strikes, and guided the aircraft onto those targets. We could get many different aircraft types providing support but when the A-10s showed up, you could hear the cheers up and down the lines as the aircraft fired its weapons. Everyone loved the A-10 and frankly, it scared the living daylights out of the enemy. The TF-34 turbofan engines make a very distinctive sound, and it was not unheard of the enemy breaking contact and running when the aircraft did nothing more than a flyover. The A-10 was just an animal. We could get support from B-52 or B-1 bombers. They would drop GPS guided bombs. One second the target is there and the next second the target was vaporized. Very effective. But, there just wasn't the same kind of reaction. There was a sense of being protected when A-10s appeared overhead and they were risking themselves to protect us on the ground. It was visceral and the soldiers loved it. They would get all pumped up to get in there and finish the job.

As a man who's been saved more than once by A-10 support I am 100% in the A-10 camp. They're cheaper to maintain, and are tried and true. The reason they want to swap out the A-10 for the F-35 is that contractors making those aircraft get more money with more orders and then down the road they can bring out a new variant that is ground support specific. The F-35 doesn't have the Gatlin gun

Hello Diane, love your videos. I've read a few of the comments here. If it hasn't been said I'm going to break it down really quick. I spent 10 years as a paratrooper and 9 years flying cobras in the army. The difference between a A10 warthog and an F-35 lightning is the A10 is designed to fly low and slow, take hits and still keep flying. It is a nightmare for the bad guys. Just the sound of that engine flying overhead is enough to get them to stop fighting and leave. The advantage of flying low and slow is that they can see us on the ground and not shoot us, but they can also see the bad guys. If you're flying in a fighter which is designed to take out other airplanes and larger ground targets, they cannot fly low enough, slow enough, and precise enough not to be able to hit us in what's called a danger close missions. The F-35 may be the hottest thing on the planet as a fighter goes, though I haven't seen proof of that yet and that's if everything works but to be able to get low and fight dirty, it just does not have that ability. There are way way too many times that they can accidentally hit friendlies because they're moving too fast and if it gets hit by any ground fire that puppy's coming out of the sky and you've just lost an 80 million fighter to somebody with a rifle. The A10 is irreplaceable. It is a monster to the bad guys and an angel to us good guys. It's a flying tank, it's the Terminator with wings. There is no replacement built yet, the F-35 lightning is not it. They're only building it because of the money that the defense industry gets, but they're not even factoring in if it can actually do the job to support troops on the ground at an equivalent level as the warthog. They don't really seem to care that it cannot do the job the A10 can. It's all a question of money for them. As for the US Army and Marines on the ground, we like the warthog. As a saying goes, "Go ugly early".

The F-35 boondoggle. It is a huge part of the Military Industrial Complex’s money scheme.
The A-10 is combat tested in the Gulf War and every combat operation since having been proven effective at giving AirSupport by overwhelming firepower, and even having been able to survive with its wing shot off by a surface to air missile. With the pilot and aircraft landing successfully in friendly.

I live in Lancaster, California -- which is north of Air Force Plant 42 and south of Edwards AFB. Every once and a while I see one overhead, that came to California for maintenance.
