My Full Self-Driving (FSD) software stopped working after getting my Tesla Model 3 windshield replaced by Safelite in April. The camera calibration will never make it past 99%. My Autopilot works fine, but FSD does not. I've cleared the camera calibration multiple times and have driven thousands of miles. Safelite looked at it twice, and Tesla Service looked at it once. It's been almost 3 months without FSD.
    Apr 12: $1,100 Safelite windshield cost x.com/slye/status/17787958692...
Safelite successfully performed calibration for Autopilot but was stuck at 98% for FSD
Took it back to Satellite. They confirmed everything passed their calibration test; suggested I take it to Tesla. Tesla Service quoted me $130 for the service appointment. Satellite reimbursed me for this.
Tesla had it for about an hour or so then said it was ready for pickup. The invoice said “Diagnosed and Performed Forward Facing Camera Target Calibration. Pitch verification”. They also disconnected/reconnected 12v battery and did a test drive. After picking my car up from Tesla nothing had been fixed. Same issue: Autopilot was good. FSD stuck at 99% calibration. I never had an issue with FSD or Autopilot or any camera calibration before getting windshield replaced.
    My options?
Take it to a different Tesla location and see if they will cover it under goodwill/FSD warranty. Or I can pay Tesla whatever they charge to fix the unknown issue. Or I can keep driving it and trying to clear calibration and re-calibrate hoping it eventually works. Or I can buy new Long Range Model 3 for $40,000 after tax credit and transfer my FSD (Tesla’s FSD free transfer promo applies to new deliveries of the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y by August 31, 2024)
    Problems:
My 2018 Model 3 current estimated value is only $12,000! If I do replace my Model 3, yes I’ll be getting a new one but I’ll be paying $40k just for a newer version of the same car I have now. I also have had great luck with my battery so far with very little degradation. I’m risking getting a new Model 3 that may have worse degradation. I’m also giving up a car with full front PPF and tint which will cost me even more money if I do it to the new car.
Service Mode Calibration Camera DAS Fix:
Remove sentry mode USB stick. Enter Tesla Service Mode (use "service" as access code). Clear each set of cameras from the dropdown menu then reset DAS and exit Service Mode. Reboot the infotainment screen by holding the 2 scroll wheels. Then drive to your nearest multi-line highway. Cameras should calibrate.

There are holes in Tesla Service and your experience and eventual outcome isn't uncommon. The irony is that because Tesla's are so reliable, many of the service center's have rookie employees and they do a poor job with edge case complaints. As you discovered, the Tesla community is a good place to start when an odd problem like yours comes up.
    BTW, using service mode isn't a hack ... 🙂

They had to remove and replace the gel pad (and the windshield had to come off) two additional times before they finally used the OEM one and resolved the problem. Did the Tesla Service Center try unhooking the 12v battery AND the HV Battery (the connection under the rear seat)? I had to do that to mine when I replaced my 12v battery after replacing it. I made a service appt because I couldn't figure out why the 12v battery warning wouldn't go away, but the appt was 2 weeks out, so on a whim I decided to pull the rear seat bottom and disconnect the HV connection and the 12v. Hooked it back up and it's worked fine ever since (6+ months ago).

Keep your car! That’s what I would do. There’s nothing wrong with it & it’s a bit of a collector’s item, too, if you ask me. Plus, you can use it to generate income when the Robotaxi network is running. Think of it like a house. Don’t sell it. Just rent it out. Put it on Turo, worst case. But don’t sell it. No need to get a new car unless you like spending money.

Several years ago, I had a similar experience with Safelite. The car was a 2015 Acura RLX. They were very kind, tried over two multi-hour visits, but could not calibrate the lane keeping assist feature after replacing the windshield. I took it to the dealer who noticed the camera on one side was now broken. It was replaced by Acura under warranty, and the car was quickly calibrated. I think Safelite is good at basic chip repair and windshield replacement, and they are always kind. But I would not let their techs near my Tesla.

Had the same issue with windshield replaced by Tesla in 2019 my model s. The hardware for the FSD computer got stuck in a boot loader issue when upgrading software while not 100% calibrated after the windshield replacement.
Cost me $1800 bucks to get fixed from Tesla, and that’s with a lot of pushback…

Andy. Got my Model 3 right after you. Same dilemma. Keep an otherwise awesome car that does everything still? Or take advantage, when I don't need a new car, of the Tax credit and FSD transfer. I figure the Tax credit will remain from now on. Thanks Tesla. The FSD transfer ends, end of August. Latter is the issue. $8000 value. At least a one time lifelong FSD transfer would be special. I'd wait.

    Andy,
In September 2023 I sold my 2018 M3 for the 2023 model year, exactly and only because I could transfer FSD ... at that time, only available if you took delivery by the end of the month, which I did. This was just before Highland was released, but I wanted to make the transfer before the "one and only transfer period" ran out. Now, it seems FSD transfer will be available periodically, and maybe even made permanent. Who can say with Tesla. I think I was a little hoodwinked on the one-month-only transfer offer but I have a nice 2023 Model 3 so I guess it's OK -- just not Highland, sadly.
Tesla only offered 13,000 for my 2018 vehicle. I took it to a couple of local dealers and shopped it around. In the end I sold it to a dealer for almost twice what Tesla offered. You might consider that. And I think the tax incentive is at the point of sale now, rather than something you get at tax time, so that certainly helps with a purchase.
I would get the new car now, while the FSD transfer is available, because it gives you that much newer vehicle and Tesla could end the transfer offer at any moment. Maybe this second time will really be the one-and-only time. You don't want to pay for it again.
Naturally, I would do this only if your finances warrant it. I suspect they do.

Good to know that technique. It's something to look out for in my Model Y and information I can pass on to others in my social media groups.
I'd say upgrade on if that is where your heart is. But truth be told I would wait. I have a end of year 2022 with HW3 and Tesla is already talking about HW5 or better known as AI5 being the one FSD will most likely work even better with. I assume HW4 will be fine but I'd simply wait.
If the current car is paid off then keep it since you won't get much for it and maybe add the new Model 3 later and transfer FSD if they still allow you to. Now you have two cars. Use one as our Uber or robotaxi and the ew one as your everyday driver.

Couple months ago, driving manually, the stop light "wake up" chime couldn't be heard.
No one else complaining on line. Now what? (out of warranty, 2018 Mod 3)
Set up a Service date. Had some back & forth chat. They set up a visit & $200 estimate.
Screw it. Cancelled. (hour+ drive to service center. $200 to investigate? At least two people I had email exchanges wanted more data. "I can't hear it. Wife can't hear it. Numerous trials. Turned off Joe mode. It used to work" type chat)
    I can live without it.

First of all if insurance is covering the cost of the windshield, get an OEM windshield… They cost almost $2000 but what do you care? That probably would've solved all your problems right there. But the second thing is an awesome hack the Tesla service should know but you'd be amazed at how much they don't.
