I lived in Brazil for almost 20 years but returned to Portugal mostly because of safety issues, both my kids were born there and it was really hard for the oldest one to embrace the shocking change. While in Brazil we lived in a city with more than 12 million inhabitants, now we live in a very small village with no more than 13k inhabitants. After almost 1 year here, I received some warnings from the school about the oldest mental health, asking what I thought about the school psychologist starting to follow the kid. After 1 month she was diagnosed with severe depression and other stuff I prefer to keep private, and one week later she was having psiq. sessions at the nearest Mental Health Hospital. Its been now almost 6 years and shes completely in control of her issues&life. On her second year at Coimbra Uni and I feel shes totally in control. What amazes me, is that her condition was somehow "found" by teachers that worry about their students and the school that immediately tried to help and prevent. I do believe prevention is very underrated.

Thank you for this Dave. I think all countries are seeing a terrible increase in homeless populations and mental health struggles. We are seeing it here in Canada too. I have purchased many warm meals for people who are down on their luck... and I'm proud of my daughter who does the same. I think sometimes they just need us to say hello and ask how they are doing... even if we can't offer money or food in the moment. It takes very little effort to be kind.

Hi, Dave. This is a subject i have been researching in other countries as well. I run a residential facility for people with mental illness as well as an independent living program. There are so many ways I would love to improve how we manage our treatment and education of mental health issues in the US. One of the most wonderful things I've experienced in Europe has been to see the way that communities rally around those in need of treatment instead of the ostracizing we see so prevalent in the US. Hopefully things are changing in that area and I hope someday we can change how we fiscally manage the situation as well. So much money is wasted and so many practices cost us more in the long run. Thank you for sharing this topic and being open with your audience.
I've enjoyed your videos for a while now. Coming back to Portugal next Friday for a week. Your videos have given me some great ideas for things I should show the 3 women coming with me that have never been. So again, I appreciate all the videos you share with us!

I know all human experiences are different. I am from Italy, and my wife is from Portugal. We live on Long Island together now. If either one of us ever told our families in the old countries we have mental health issues they would have said that isn’t a real thing. We’d essentially be told to suck it up by our European families. It’s only since moving to the United States that the concept of seeking mental health services was ever put on the table.

Just to make a little note on the homeless situation:
In Portugal or maybe to be more precise in my city, the town hall does provide a small fund and housing to help people get back on their feet. But, from personal experience, these homeless people refuse to accept it. Not out of pride but because they would have to follow certain rules if they accepted the help (they wouldn't be able to come and go as they pleased, they wouldn't be able to drink or smoke as much, they wouldn't be able to do drugs...things like that). They would rather live on the street than having those few little conditions. Though...to be fair...in a city of almost 120 thousand people, there are like 5 or 6 known homeless people who everyone knows they have refused the help provided by the town hall.

I can guess what city that might be, and you're lucky. In the greater Lisbon and the south bank area things are dire for so many, and the mental health issues are now as common as going out for a coffee, you can tell easily just by looking at someone's eyes - they're empty, trying to hide all that anxiety... The housing crisis, the hospitals... I've never seen anything like this.

This is a governmental problem that started with Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately, mental health is not a priority for the United States government. So much of our tax money goes towards defense and military.
We vote for politicians who do not really represent the needs of the American people.
Dave, I don't know if you notice, but the Portuguese are kind of melancholy by nature. I suffered from depression and loneliness for the first time when I lived in Portugal. It's a place where I have almost no fond memories. I hope you adjust well.

The only policies that work are housing first policies. Conditioning housing on them following certain rules is the same as not prioritizing homeless care. House them first, then get the social services in place to deal with mental illness, addiction and skills deficits.

Others have not taken their medications and assaulted other residents and put holes in our walls. If I could I would give them all tiny homes to themselves. Important topic. I have been working in psychiatry in the Netherlands and I would never want to do it again because of the constant stress of the government pushing you to do more with less on the one side and the harsh confronting reality of working in psychiatry on the other. It takes it's toll. Nevertheless it is a shame that mental healthcare is not a basic right in so many parts of the world. I don't want to have a mental condition at all, but if I had one, I would rather have it in the Netherlands than here in Portugal.

This practice infuriates me and should be forbidden. In the Netherlands psychiatrists work together with psychologists and nurses etc. They look at what circumstances the person lives in, involves the family and direct environment in the diagnose / treatment. And only if necessary they prescribe pills.
It is no use to prescribe pills if you are not willing to look at the cause of the mental illness. If you don't treat the cause you are just fighting the symptoms. I have seen several people turn into zombies where I am sure those persons really did not need to be.

I no longer can live in California, it’s too painful and I’ve been in Hawaii trying to manage living with the hole in my soul. Hi Dave,
This is a great video. I was sorry to hear about your relatives facing issues of mental health in the United States. My question is what did you do to try to help them?
I am glad that you shared your own struggle with agoraphobia and it seems as though you have recovered from it.
Europe, generally speaking, does a better job taking care of homeless people and the mentally ill. However, they pay more in taxes as a percentage of income than the United States. The state is expected to provide needed services because of this.
There is a stigma against the mentally ill in the United States. You are right about institutions that house the mentally ill Jails and prisons are the worse places for them but because there is no strong commitment to provide needed social services to help the mentally ill and this is therefore where they are sent.
I have a friend who is a Circuit Court Judge in Miami-Dade County named Steve Leifman. The best word to describe him is mensch. He started out as a public defender and became a judge. He is known nationwide for his efforts to help the mentally ill who are in the criminal justice system. He is one person who struggles with the bureaucracy but until there is a societal commitment not to stigmatize the mentally ill, major changes are not possible.
Society as a whole has to be brought around to changing its attitude about homelessness and the mentally ill.

Hey Dave, over the past few years, the mental health crisis has grown exponentially in the LA area of Beverly Hills/West Hollywood. I was just thinking if these homeless mentally ill drug addicts were stray pets, we'd have tons of support to shelter them humanly. I applied for a job at LA Public Law Center as a staff attorney more than a decade ago. There were 12 administrators at the interview! I got drilled by these Uber Liberal management attorneys, though I was the only one with a master's degree in social work. Wow, I terminated the interview as it was clear, the client was the mentally ill person would dictate the representation and I had to take their position, no matter how harmful it would be to them, I had to support their psychotic wishes. Republicans don't want to spend the $ to force treatment/care, and Democrat's don't want to usurp the mentally ill person's self-determination. That's a marriage made in heaven=do nothing and they both wins, except the most vulnerable.

Thank you for making this brave and honest video. CZcamsr’s have a tendency to make everything seem perfect and that isn’t reality. I’m old enough to remember when the US provided care for mental issues. Political changes in the 80’s saw the closure of federally assisted facilities nationwide resulting in a huge increase in homelessness. For decades I’ve said that many of the people that you see on the streets aren’t just homeless, they are ill and just dumped there. People don’t want to see the homeless but refuse to vote for funding to help them. I’m in the process of transitioning permanently to my newly purchased home here where the people have been very kind to me and life has been less stressful. Keep up the good work.

I’m sure you are aware, of how much content is out there! Every expat group known to man. 😅That I have found so much useful, in watching your videos (particularly this one), is not an understatement. I am a successful D.C. / Seattle psychotherapist with a loyal, clientele. But, Dave, I have wanted out of here for a long time! My mental health and really, my life depends on me leaving. The jig is up. Bullets are flying everywhere, and everywhere men, women, children, and families with pets, are blanketing Our street, naked, starving and freezing. The mental health, drug addiction, and poverty crisis in America is indefensible. The balance is way off, far behind the line of humanity. What I am witnessing is of another world crazy. So, yes, I am ready to go. To continue to do the important work I do, but, from a place where I can breathe. I have chosen Portugal. I would like to make the move by September 2024. The past two years I’ve focused on making this move to Bali. However, as much as I love Bali, it is not the solution for me. My wish is continue my psychotherapy practice, at first, as a digital nomad, but later to provide professional, mental health counseling to the Expat population, or general population in the city, in which I choose. Thank you again. -Temple

From my xp; to anyone who's ever been a victim of hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race: DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: maybe if I wasn't 'different', if I was 'normal' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon. I've always had kinda androgynous look, which was a fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :)
WIth the rise of social media in early 2010's and the celebration of the unachievable beauty standards, the horrendous promotion of vanity and superficiality and neglect of cyber bullying, the mental health has been completely overlooked for years.

Panic attacks are not fun, especially if you dont know you're having a panic attack, and you actually think you're having a heart attack, which happened to me, during covid lockdown, i started having panic attacks systematicly some times 3 or 4 times a day, luckely i have some one in my family that is a doctor, and i eventually found out that they where just panic attacks which made me abble to " control " them, even so, despite being no where near where i was in that regard, every now and again i still fell them, though now i can easily control it.

Homelessness in Norway is a lot about people being given housing they don't want. Norwegian authorieties has always worked hard to find housing for people, but homeless people in Norway is usually homeless either because they have an addiction, some also come with a nomad lifestyle. I had a friend who wanted to live on a boat, but Norwegian authorities didn't want to accept the address. For that reason I think people who look homeless on the streets of Oslo, the capital, has houses to live in, but don't want to be there. I also know that some people are being sent back to their home town because the capital don't wanna pay for them. That often happens to underage kids.

So here in San Francisco it is an epidemic. The homeless get free drugs, free food and fee housing, but they don’t go into the housing b/c to many restrictions. There is a lot of mental I’ll on the streets and the police just can’t do anything with them. We need more hospitals to treat these people. Just have to build them out of the cities in rural areas with cheap land.

Or reopen our state institutions that were all closed and mostly are still sitting vacant. It costs CA so much more to manage what happens with them when homeless than it would to treat them effectively.

*Fennoscandia may be better than the US* for mental health (if we ignore the suicide rate, specially in the dark Winter) but the US is way more advanced than countries like Portugal.
We should address the mental elephant in the room. In the States *any and everything is for profit.* Education, health, prisons/jails, so is always hard to compare that to Europe.
Now there are differences in countries within Europe, abismal differences, however these services are very distinct from the US.
You have *free health care and education* (any level) in Finland. You have private and public in Portugal. Whereas you get prescribed Paracetamol for *anything* in the Netherlands (and unlike Portugal you need Insurance).
And I won’t speak about other countries as I haven’t seen the really there.

My son went to prison when he was 18. He was a healthy young man. 5 years later after so much isolation and the use of synthetic drugs inside prison, he became so mentally ill that I don't know what J will do when he is released in 2024. Instead of treatment, he keeps getting isolation which is inhumane.

When it comes to mental illness it's long been one of the posts on the budget the parliament finds it easiest to take from if they need money. Something I find a bit odd. Often when you ask Norwegians about mental health treatments in Norway they complain, complain, complain. Norwegains are good at complaining. There is a long waiting list for treatment with a psychiatrist, several months. It has long been a problem that people who are arrested by the police and need treatment end up in prison cells because there is not treatment facility available. Still I think it's easy to make these problems much bigger than they are, compared to the US I think they are minor.

Unfortunately, America is the country of broken people who have lost sight of what is important and move between social media, purchasing, consumption and superficiality. Too much is too much. You forget the important things in life and worry about nonsense. Of course, at some point you are lost, mentally and physically. the country with the most depression and overweight people in the world. But how should it be? When the country you live in is only looking to provide instead of taking care of its citizens. On the contrary, it shows you the American dream, which only a few can live.

Oh Dave, I don't like this video. I got treated for a severe depression and a problem with anxiety which I don't know the name in english, I've been struggling with the same problems since I was 21, I'm about to be 39 next month, I got through college severely medicated, not easy. You might ask me, "but why don't you go back to meds?". I don't want to be a zombie anymore, taking meds or doing drugs is pretty much the same, there's simply no treatment. Dave, you with "transtorno de ansiedade generalizada", travelling around the world all by yourself, with your accomplishments, you must be proud of yourself. Agoraphobia is fricking awful, every time you go outside is like a leap of faith from assassin's creed "let's see how it goes". Summing it up, I'm not doing any treatment simply because I don't want to do it anymore, I could start a new treatment next week with close to no expenses, mental illnesses here have the same attention as cancer

Does mental health follow substance abuse? I think as usual the solution is simple, but people would have to get disciplined and self accountable. Ultimately it is a spiritual thing, kick God out ( Christ to be specific) and there you go. But that is not politically correct.
