      Kimura was a real professional.
      Of course he also knew all the tricks outside the ring (corruption included) with the big mouth (compare Muhammad Ali).
      Bluming did not talk about Kimura but about Mas Oyama and the other Japanese legends. Bluming meant that the Japanese believe all what somebody says. I think they just have respect and say 'hi".
      Yamashita (128 kg) had a conversation with Kimura (89 kg) in Maastricht where he became world champion and accepted all what he told him. Kimura said that he threw a 180 kg opponent out of the ring with his sumo trick. Leaving the ring means loss.

      Kimura beat the crap out of Gracie in their Rorion Gracie declared “Jujutsu” contest. A guy I did Judi with in 1990s said there was Gracie Judo on 1960s.

      @johnm249 and now I'll blow your mind, go get a scraper for that wall cleaning. Jiu-jitsu and Judo used to be one martial art called ju-jutsu. Then under the influence of Japanese rightwingers it was changed to ju-do. Then the first guys that came to teach in Brazil, they did not have the blessing of their Japanese judo organization, so they circled back to the old name, then Gracies, and others came along and started focusing more on the ground game and the Gracie jiu jitsu/BJJ was born and since then we have two martial arts, aikido used to be judo as well. The highest belt used to be the blue belt. And let's see, what else, nah that's pretty much it for now. (I train judo and bjj in Brazil, in a school founded by a Takeo Yano student and currently ran by his sons [rest in peace and glory, Grande Mestre Sá] and I also love history a whole lot).

    Outstanding educational video Chadi.
    I just learned something new from this.
    When I did Gracie jiujitsu in the early 90s with my brothers at home they were dirty fighters so when I pulled guard one liked to stomp or drop his knees into my groin.
    The other liked to grab and twist testicles.
    So I learned the guard position had it's vulnerabilities when fighting those whom are not playing a sport and are sadistic.
    I really like Masahiko Kimura's attack upon guard pullers.
    I saw a retired catch wrestler, Billy Robinson of Japans infamous snake pit grappling school, once show how Karl Gotch use to leg lock guard pullers by attacking their knee.

    As someone already commented, that's the wrong way to pull guard. Normally you'd either put the foot on the hip, or you'd do a cross step and rotate into a De La Riva guard, on the hiki-te side. And even then, you don't just stay centered to your opponent but always try to create an angle. This isn't to say there aren't ways to pass when someone's pulling to guard but there are much easier options if someone's pulling guard the wrong way.

    Another excellent presentation with analysis, the only additional comment i could/would make is that if you look closely you will see that Kimura also lands with his reaping knee on his opponent's chest/abdomen (not only does it appear to be uncomfortable, but i can't help but think it also stuns His opponent enough to give Kimura an opportunity to position Himself in a more advantageous Kesa Gatame) !

    • @markfoster5004
      @markfoster5004 Před 4 měsíci +6

      You’re right. Also, I might be wrong but to me it appears Kimura also gives a slight hop with his left leg just after reaping with his right. I think that helps him control his trajectory so he lands more straight down on his opponent. So his opponent hits the ground harder than he expected, then has a man land on his ribs-gotta be distracting.

    Man, I love both Judo and BJJ. This system indeed works miracles.
    Another one for outside competition that also works is when they engage the guardpull with 1 foot on the ground. Just step on and keep standing on the ankle, while sinking your but straith into the ground while he falls backward. Itwill shred the ankles ligaments.
    Again, do not use it in competition, but when you are attacked for real... It will be very hard for the other guy persuing you with a snapped ankle. Self defence is awesome.

    The guard puller is falling straight backwards which most modern guard pullers don't. In this instance he would fall towards his right, maybe 45 degrees to Tori's line. It would possibly reduce Tori's ability to move to kesa gatame in this fashion. He would need to pass to the other side. Not sure without trying it.

Likely possible, but I wonder what the probability of it is--you'd have to be pretty proficient, one would assume, to accomplish it. One detail perhaps of note: He deliberately "'makes himself skinny" affording only one possible foothold on the hip and then passing the hip through the gap rapidly. This in theory could be offset by a De la riva approach on the part of the guard puller, but it's an interesting tidbit nonetheless. Intriguing video.

    Guard pulling is a cancer on grappling and I support any technique to stop it. This is a neat version of a flyover pass, but most guard pullers actually "pull" guard, they dont jump open guard like uke did in this video. It's never how it's taught but some do jump guard and when they do, they close their guard right away and count on the mat for a soft landing. When someone decides to start on the ground instead of standing this pass could work for sure.

If I do utilize guard, it's because I was brought to the ground against my will. I also always put an emphasis on standing up where possible/regaining top position. It seems to be important for this to work that the inner reap (I forget, ko uchi?) sweeps the support leg before the foot is firmly planted in the stomach. Once the foot plants, there is tension between he foot pushing, and the hands pulling, and a sacrifice throw (Tomoe nage) can still be finished. I agree. This technique looks deceptively easy. It would take a ton of practice to land it in the very short window of time. That being said, I hate guard pullers, so I got to get training on this!

    Guys. This isn’t how you pull guard. No rotation, no pull, legs on the wrong side. If you’re defending against a new blue belt then I guess, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone with color on their belt pull guard like this.

    So do I understand correctly that the reason he's able to pass I'd due to the shock effect, which makes the bottom player open their guard momentarily?
    Is there a chance that I'd does not open?

    • @IHaveTheSchwartz
      @IHaveTheSchwartz Před 4 měsíci

      Not shock. Zero support of the takedown. With no foundation, the Judoka passes a non existant guard now, and is free to submit the BJJ opponent.

    Pulling guard is when people do not have takedown skills, or do not feel confident to attempt a takedown on their opponent in a match or a fight.
    The only good reasons for pulling guard are:
    -to learn the flying triangle choke (which can be a dangerous move)
    -to learn the flying armbar (which can be a dangerous move)
    -to work on your guard in class when your teacher ordered you to roll starting from the kneeling position
    If I was pitted against an opponent in a tournament and did not feel confident to attempt a takedown because of his superior throwing or takedown abilities, one thing I would do is squat down really low like a sumo wrestler. (Semi-dirty "trick")

    You won't make many friends in a BJJ class passing the guards like this. The guy doesn't land on the mat,he lands on your face.
    Don't pull guard like the dude in the video. Kimura is standing tall with total mobility of his hip. First break his posture with a sleeve and lapel grip,one foot pushing the hip vigorlously,.If you control his upper body like this,it will be very difficult for him to execute the reap and if he tries to jump on you,he will fall inside your guard. So before you pull guard,break his posture and get him out of balance.

    With guard pulls being so prevalent in today's so called BJJ, can we see have we seen this technique being used?

    • @vids595
      @vids595 Před 4 měsíci +4

      Yeah we sometimes see the flyover pass but not normally when someone poulls guard because they dont pull guard like uke in the video did. They either jump guard and close their legs right away or actually "pull" guard by breaking their opponents posture first. People dont normally pull open guard.
