      Michael Peters try it live in judo randori. You will either get countered or just be unable to get into position unless you have a lot of finesse or have some throw combinations to set it up.
      It’s hard to break balance for the throw, it’s hard to get close enough to pull it off with their arms in the way and if they see it coming you can get countered pretty hard to land on your back.
      This is in contrast to something like uchi mata which is a technically very challenging move, but once you have the technique down it is harder to see coming and much harder to counter in my opinion.
      I happen to have a good body type for osoto gari with pretty long legs so it is probably my best throw along with kosoto gari. It took years to be able to pull it off consistently though. Other judo players try the same through to me regularly but I find it quite easy to defend unless the player is very advanced or if they specialise in the throw or have a size advantage or something.
      Hope that helps! Let me know if you want more info

    I have personally never seen at blackbelt level in any competition getting 2 points with osoto gari against someone pulling guard. You see a lot of Ko Uchi Garis ( because its a quicker short move ) but no Osotos. Actually Osoto Gari is extremely rare in Jiu-Jitsu at blackbelt level. 1. Because in JJ, opposite to Judo you can do 2 defensive grips on the collar wich makes Osoto almost impossible. 2. The Osoto is an outside technique that demands a lot of time and the need to use your whole body to unbalance your oponent. Quicker foot throws, like, O uchi gari, Ko Uchi Gari, De Ashi Harai and Sasae are more effective to Jiu-Jitsu.

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 Před 3 lety +4

      I've seen osoto in black belt comp, both in situations where someone is trying to sit to guard (looks just like what Miha shows), and when someone is trying to stay standing to score takedowns. I've even seen it lead directly into an immediate armbar.
      If the opponent is trying to use double collar grips to stiff-arm, it might make sense to break a grip and go over the top for a cross grip or a Georgian grip; this will negate a lot of the stiff-arming.

      @@plcoelho I didn't say "high level black belt", I just said black belt. At a high level, good competitors should be able to sense when they are outmatched on their feet and pull guard by sprawling to their knees first, then sitting down, which will negate 95+% of any ankle pick, kouchi gari, etc attempt.
      I think osoto-gari (or any kind of judo takedown) is pretty rare in high level competition, but if you need an example to see that it's possible, take a look at this match between Roger Gracie and Leonardo Leite. This was 2008, so Roger was training a lot of standup to prepare for his transition to MMA: czcams.com/video/5GcWs_tSVac/video.html
      Here's an osoto-gari against a guard puller, it's not Roger Gracie level, but the uke is a reasonably good black belt (Kohei Ebashi, who got silver in the adult / black belt / featherweight division at the 2012 Asian Open, about 8 months before this match): czcams.com/video/cSsx40vMT2U/video.html

      @@jsl8461 Judo Takedowns are actually very common in Jiu-Jitsu competitions. Watch a Rodolfo Vieira Highlight. Every match begins with a drop seoi or ko uchi gari. What is not common and absolutely rare is an Osoto gari. You had to go as far as 2008 to show an attempt of an Osoto with no success by Leo Leite who was at the time part of Brazils Judo National Team as well as a high level blackbelt in BJJ from Alliance, exactly for the reasons I stated in my original coment. The second fight is not a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament. Its a newaza challenge. Reality is Osoto gary is almost impossible to use in BJJ Blackbelt level competitions. And in fact nobody uses it. This is very easy to demonstrate as hundreds of videos of BJJ fights have all sorts of Judo Takedowns but no Osoto Garis. But you are welcome to change my mind and show me a couple.

    In bjj I am most worried about the crazy guard jumps. Dealing with those is number 1 priority since they can blow out your knees. These are banned at white belt now I believe but possibly still exist at higher belts?

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 Před 3 lety +2

      Someone jumping and landing their hip weight on your knee is always dangerous. Not only for front guard pulls, but also when BJJ guys try to grab your waist with a back bodylock and pull you to the the side while jumping their entire hip weight into the side of your knee, when someone does a scissor takedown, when someone does a tani otoshi but puts their entire hip weight on your knee, etc. Awareness is the key, but also safe training partners who know not to do that stuff. It's up the instructor to tell students NOT to do this crazy stuff, and also for the individual student to really think about these situations so they know how to recognize them and avoid them.
      Regarding a jumping closed guard pull, really the key is just awareness, and reacting such that they don't land on your knee. For example, if you're a beginner and you get the sense they are trying to jump, then you can grip both hands low on their gi jacket (around their sternum) which should give you a really good sense of where their hip is relative to your knees.
      Also, know your limits. In a real life scenario the best solution would be to sprawl, which slams them on the mat, but in most scenarios is a terrible thing to do to your training partner (and illegal under most competition rulesets). However, if they are a lot bigger than you, then you should feel free to sprawl, because a) they shouldn't be doing a jumping guard pull on a smaller person to begin with, and b) it doesn't make sense to try to hold them up, since you might lose balance and catastrophically injure your knee. If you know you are super strong and can stay standing when a 220lb guy jumps guard on you, go ahead and stay standing, but if you're way smaller then you can go ahead and sprawl. Don't try to intentionally hurt the guy or anything, but you don't need to risk your knee for the sake of the other guy when he is the one who initiated the dangerous movement -- in this scenario, your safety comes first.

    Im a black belt in Judo and a white belt in BJJ. My bestfriend is a purple belt in BJJ...and he laughs whenever he sees a colored belt BJJ pull guard on me. Because now the throws are coming.
    Most judokas including myself have so much disdain and hate for guard pullers 😂

    How does this fit into the dangers of people instantly jumping guard? Can putting your leg forwards like this get your knee broken as they agressivly jumps forward?

    Demian Maia pulled guard in many UFC fights successfully. When he started standing and tryna box boxers and wrestle wrestlers is when he started losing...the losing path most BJJ experts take in MMA. I know it's cool to say not to pull guard, but when your opponent is a better wrestler or striker with great tD defense then it's wise.

      Then maybe the art of BJJ is not the invincible art as the Gracies would want people to believe 😅

    Guard pull should always give 2 points to the opponent.

    There's a famous video of Masahiko Kimura demonstrating various techniques. The first one is a counter against a tomoe-nage where he ends up in kesa-gatame. I feel like it could work against a guard puller. Hopefully one day Keenan could do a quick breakdown of the move and see if the technique could be plausible against a guard puller. I don't know if I could pull it off, but perhaps others might. czcams.com/video/BVE82gH-v-g/video.html
