      Monkeysrock I would have to agree 100%, Alec Steele is a very talented young man. Woots/crucible steel is the original Damascus which was never made in Damascus lol but I consider any form of a forge welded billet of different steels Damascus and always will. As soon and my new Anyang 88 gets wired up I plan on doing something very similar but hope to finish with a large billet which means I hill have to make a larger forge or add on to the one I have.

    Hey Alec, I am 14 years old. The snow is melting here in Canada, and I have always wanted to try metal working. I have access to a medium-ish anvil in decent shape, it will do for me. The one thing I don't have is a forge. I would like to know what forge to start with. Should I make a coal forge, buy one? Buy a propane forge? Money isn't in abundance as I am 14. Should I make tongs, try to buy tongs and hammers. What should I do? I hope you answer my questions. Thank you!

    • @stevenb7319
      @stevenb7319 Před 5 lety

      Jerri Bruce you can make a coal forge using a truck break drum and a blow dryer for forced air. A blower would work better but finding that is a little harder. It’s the cheapest way to start. Channel locks will help until you can make tongs. You can some times find hand crank Vulcan forges in antique stores for really cheap. Same for tongs. They may just need a bit of work and TLC. Sometime you can find someone whose parent had a forge and they are throwing it away.

  • @Redspeciality

    I've read in some reputable books that it's a waste of time to do more than about 30,000 layers because the metal becomes homogenized, also there is more of a chance to have a weld that can fail with all thos folds.

    • @MetatronsCube23
      @MetatronsCube23 Před 7 lety +6

      Those books seem to have been disproven by this very video though. Doing a million folds and welding it by hand(very difficult) seems much different than the people who use power hammers for welding all the layers. If the billets are properly fluxed and you use a power hammer it comes out perfect nearly every time. The acid etch also shows off plenty of "grain" in the metal too.

    • @sethh8892
      @sethh8892 Před 6 lety +4

      Redspeciality yes because he's going to be welding a trailer hitch to a Karambit... of course there's no purpose but it's a freaking knife, it's not like you're pulling a thousand pound trailer behind you. There's really nothing to break, it's a single piece of metal. Unless he smacks it with a sledgehammer, it won't break

      marcos nielsen wrong, the technology has been lost not because nobody forge it but the metal itself is special because it mixed with rare earth metal. U. Can search about type of metal found on damascus blade were not found in any blade existence.
      The blade itself manufactured in india (Sri Lanka) and southerm india but the metal itself came from theblost kingson of sungai batu that has been discovered producing metal ore in mass quantitiy but non metal were found because Chola kingsom.from india took every metal and bring it its technology to india.

    • @ModernBladesmith
      @ModernBladesmith Před 7 lety +2

      "oil" :) i was confused af too when i saw FeCl3. You can make it by adding some steel wool to muriatic acid and waiting till it dissolves. Then just add appx. 2 parts hydrogen peroxide for every 1 part muriatic acid.

    • @modernpowmodernpow2946
      @modernpowmodernpow2946 Před 7 lety +1

      JWvdv don't use oil that is for quenching same with water. Soak in FeCl3 ferric chloride for 24-36 hours depending on the steels or other metals used and how much pattern you want.

    • @ModernBladesmith
      @ModernBladesmith Před 7 lety +1

      depending on the concentration 36 hours could be a bad idea. you may want to give a acid %# with that.
