  • Some of the greatest athletes ever are perfectionists in sports including Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, and Serena Williams. So how did these athletes get away with being perfectionists? Is perfectionism helpful? Is being a perfectionist why these athletes are great or is perfectionism a thorn in their side? The best athletes are able to use the advantages or perfectionism to shaping their greatness while managing the disadvantages that come with being a perfectionist.
First, athletes need to overcome the lure of “perfectionism” with logic. No athlete is perfect. The pressure to play a perfect game hurts your confidence and enjoyment for the sport.
Second, perform functionally, not perfect. You’re not going to be in the zone every game! Don’t let one bad play dictate your mindset and performance the rest of the competition. Focus on winning ugly and getting it done-without the need to feel or have it look perfect.

Another related aspect to this is perfectionist athletes expecting people to be perfect just because they're an elite athlete. This leads to frustration that in turn activates the Vicious Cycle of Frustration.

I am a 17 year old hockey player and I am the best athlete of my team when it comes to athleticism off the ice. I know I can also be the best on the ice but I am not confidence from past experiences and I cant overcome it.
