    I think I'd buy this book if it was published as a popular $20 hardback that had the stories but didn't have the pictures. I haven't got to the price yet, but I suspect I don't care enough to spend $50 on it.
    I read a lot about Vegas (I've just finished Billy Walters book, Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk) but I don't gamble and I've never had any desire to visit the place. It looks like the town where culture goes to die.

      I can always count on you to have a strong opinion, Twat ;) Truthfully, I appreciate that!
      Vegas is an interesting place to visit, and it makes sense in a lot of ways. If you can't afford to go to Paris, NY, Rome, etc. in one trip, you can visit a fake version all in one go. I can see the appeal if you can't visit the real things.

      I discuss what's relevant in magic books for magicians, and this is the latest... 🤷🏻

    Nice review. I bought the Deluxe but have not gotten it yet. I am really looking forward to reading it. These are the magicians who made magic "MAGIC." It saddens me a bit that so many of the comments below eschew interest in these stage magicians or this topic. I presume that is because so many of today's current "magicians" are mainly interested in card tricks or close-up. Many I have come across do tricks for their friends, but never even consider doing an actual "show" for a paid audience. Stage magic and illusionists seem to have become outdated or passé in many magic circles these days.

      Thanks, Jim! I'm sure you'll enjoy the deluxe edition and the inspiring stories within. Magicians seems to have varying degrees of appreciation for large-scale magic, but I'll emphasize that this book isn't just about big illusionists...there are plenty of stories of close-up performers who helped shape the landscape of Vegas as well.

    Thank you for the excellent review . How has Vegas shaped the magical profession? Sometimes in seems that The Vegas stage selects in favor of bigger and glitzier shows that require showmanship but not necessarily proficiency in the sleight of hand? Or Am I wrong in this?

    • @EruditeMagic
      @EruditeMagic  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I think you're wrong about this. Lance spends the latter part of the book discussing the new age of Vegas Magic: bringing sleight of hand and close-up to bigger audiences. For example Mat Franco doesn't do any big magic, yet he entertains larger crowds than a normal close-up magician. In addition, the author covers all of the house magicians who performed table side, like Michael Skinner, Jimmy Grippo, etc. It's not all glitz and glam...

      @@EruditeMagic Thank you for the reply. My information set is outdated. I went to Vegas to see (and meet) Lance Burton in late 90's and it was a different scenes back then. I would never travel to Vegas to see Mat Franco.

    Looks like an interesting book, but price is too high for me to jump on it. I wish it could have been published as a mass market book to help bring the price down.

    Great review Jeff. Agree that Las Vegas has great history about magicians and magic in Vegas however I will stick to Mike Caveney well researched and written books for my magic library. Interesting title Neon Dreams.

    if i want to get annemans work on mentalism i have a question? does practical mental effects contain all of his work? if not what do you reccomend

    • @EruditeMagic
      @EruditeMagic  Před 7 měsíci

      No, Practical Mental is a posthumous collection put together by his friends of the "best of" from The Jinx. If you want all of Annemann's material, I recommend "Annemann's Enigma" by the Miracle Factory.

      Jeff, you always have a way of making a book sound good. I am not a fan of Las Vegas magic for the most part. I will watch a stage act, but I’ll never have an interest in performing stage. I’m only interested in the types of magic I do.
      I told Andi a few days ago I would love a book on the history of Midwest magic like Michigan, Chicago, and St Louis. I would also be interested in East Coast Magic history. I would love more history about these topics. Maybe Andi will include Chicago Magic history with the Marlo Magazines. I am super excited about them. Thank you for the great show and you did move this book up a few notches for me.
