    The thing I like the best about the end of the year are the book lists. I've just spent the afternoon checking out Best Mysteries and Best Non Fiction and here was are with Best Magic. Pure pleasure.

    Great recap of the 2023 publications, Jeff. As an aside, Josh and Andi teased some of Vanishing Inc’s new and reprints in their letter and video yesterday such as Definitive Sankey and the Marlo magazine. I know I’ll be eating less in 2024 to be able to enjoy those. Happy new year!

    An enjoyable episode and review of last year. I always enjoy recaps to see what I might have missed and learn new things. I did a fairly good job in guessing your winners. Based on the constraints you put on yourself, I have no disagreement with any of your choices. Unfortunately, although I read a lot, I'm reading a lot of books in other areas. I'm currently reading Magic Babylon by Joe Hernandez. It's a fun collection of miscellaneous facts and anecdotes about magicians and magic history. The way it's written, it's easy to pick it up and read a few pages at a time. My main complaint is that he badly needs an editor. There are numerous typos and mistakes throughout the book.

    • @EruditeMagic
      @EruditeMagic  Před 4 měsíci

      I feel like that is a common problem with many magic books. We need more magic editors!

    I appreciate your work . Thank you for the videos. I was a video only learner, but the past year I learned to appreciate the value of books. Now I only need to read all of em.😅
    Happy New Year!!

    The books I invested in 2023 are Repertoire by Asi Wind, 52 Memories and 52 Exploration by Andi Gladwin, Scripting Magic and Scripting Magic Volume Two by Pete McCabe, and lastly In Order to Amaze and Card Fictions by Pit Hartling. For 2024 I will be adding Sub Rosa by Ariel Frailich to start things off (Because I must know.) Your CZcams channel is an invaluable asset to the magic community. It's been directly responsible for influencing me to purchase three of the books I listed. Sub Rosa will be the forth. Happy New Year!

    Great end of the year recap!
    I realized i bought a lot more reprints this year than new 2023 books but 2 new ones on my mind, though atm a little more rare are the White Wand Chronicals II (loved it) and the new Hector Chadwick book which I just received but haven't read yet.

    Nice review. I have all of the ones you mentioned except the Bannon book (not a card guy) and you did a nice job picking candidates and winners. I agree Dobson book is one of the best works to come along in a long time. I love Fellow Traveler, but am only half-way thorough it - I find it a good one to pick up and set back down again, reading in small doses. Kurt Volkmann's History of the Art of Conjuring is by far the most elaborate and ambitious book to come out, but I will admit that it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Another one I am taking in small doses. I may be years finishing it.

    Great episode. The only book I really loved was The Wayne Dobson’s book and I concur that it is the book of the year. I made it my book of the year on a list.
    I recently bought Unreal because I won a drawing for $50 for Vanishing Inc. I’m not a big fan
    Of mentalism, but I am trying to own every Vanishing Inc book. My biggest problem is that I like all my Vanishing books to sit together, but they don’t really go together. lol.
    Have a great rest of the New Years.

    I didn't buy any "new for 2023" books this year, only reprints and used older books. My favorites have been the Complete Works of Derek Dingle and Totally Out of Control, though the latter may be benefiting from recency bias.
    Of what I've heard is coming out in 2024, I am most interested in the Alan Ackerman books.

    Agree with anything to do with D.Brown.Haven’t got any books of his but watched a lot of his clever psychology shows on tv.Wasn’t impressed with Carneycopia.Just didn’t do it for me.Theatre of the mind also didn’t do it for me( seemed a few gimmicks were needed).Hush hush by Bannon was superb and the reprinted Destination Zero was also a fabulous Bannon book.Looking forward to more reprints in 2024 like Sankey stuff and maybe Trost stuff.Anyway I really enjoyed all your reviews etc of 2023.Congratulations on your content and hard word.Excellent!Thank You.Here’s to 2024. HAPPY NEW YEAR 🍷🎉.
