  • Have you ever asked yourself 'Why does my budgie scream?'. Then this video might help you out :) These are 7 reasons why our budgies scream. Of course, your birb might be screaming because of other things, but I hope this video can help someone anyway!
    Screaming is not always harmful to budgies, but it can be. Especially the stress that can come with it. That's why it's good to know why they scream and how to solve it :)
    Also feel free to share any additional reasons for screaming in the comments below. Or ask other questions about your budgie.

    My female used to scream if I didn't get up when alarm went off , making sure I got up for work, bit difficult to tell her it was a day off :) my two males scream but I think they do it when they see big scary bird fly pass the window , could be a predator or could be they want attention

    My budgie Lisa has been screaming every day for about a week. She is loud usually but this is a lot more. She even screams when we have company & that usually keeps her quiet. I cover her up at night & she sleeps all night.
    I went to work for a couple of weeks & now I’m home all day again. Maybe she didn’t like me being gone after 2 years of being with her everyday. I’m taking her to the vet to have her nails clipped & I’ll ask about that too. It’s kind of worrying me. 😢

      It's very possible that she's unhappy about you being away. Sometimes it's also because of a hormonal phase. When they have more hormones they sometimes scream more. Ours have been screaming the past days because of the rain. They really hate it 😋
      I hope the vet can help you out and that Lisa goes back to normal! 🤗
      One thing that somehow helps is turning on the washing machine or vacuum cleaner 😂 They stop screaming and start singing 😋

    My budgie used to constantly scream and I had two of them. I found out they were fighting over this perch that didn't fit both of them well. So when the one would be sitting on it the other one will be screaming and flying around the cage until he got off it and then when he said on it the other one would be doing the same. So it was a constant screaming budgie the whole day. So I finally took it out and put a better size one in there for both of them to sit on and I haven't heard them scream since

    My 2 budgies always fight and scream over food , territory or almost anything~ the female budgie keeps biting the male and is so aggresive.
    They're fine with me but together.. they mostly fight.. but sometimes they kiss and groom each other too~~ I'm so confused..
    I researched about all the reasons why they may act like that.. (omg I'm next to them right now few seconds ago the male was grooming the female and she started biting and chasing him again out of no where🤷‍♀️)
    Ok so here's more info:
    - they have a pretty big cage
    - they have 2 food bowls far from each other (so they won't fight over it)
    - they both have different places to sit, have two perches, have toy and swing and some other stuffs in the cage.
    I do give them food with 2 hands and try to make my hands far away from each other, anytime I bring them food I always make sure to have 2 of them from different sides.
    (I started doing that coz i figured out they fight over food long ago)
    Now I realized they actually fight over nothing sometimes! I mean SHE fights.. the male never wants to fight.. it has been going on forever!I tried everything I've hear and researched about, the female thinks she is the boss of everything, nono it is not what you may think, I didn't have the female first.. my mom brought both of them together from the pet store and he told mom that they're bonded which doesn't seem so..
    Idk maybe the female is older? Or maybe she is just too jealous.. she is not only aggressive with her but with everything including me, she bites me and attacks me too.
    The poor male can't enjoy anything, when he is eating she hits her and then goes back to eating her food again🤷‍♀️ like wut? Or sometimes just trying to eat what he eats, then he goes for the other side then she chases and pushes him away and eats that food then again and again the cycle continues and it feels like it never ends🤷‍♀️ not only that, she is even jealous of him sitting anywhereee in the cage! She goes bites him and pushes him away! The perch, the swing.. and everywhere.. even when he is playing with a toy, singing or dancing she doesn't let him enjoy and starts biting him for nothing !
    They're both healthy and none of them is sick!
    You may think why i don't separate them I did... the male seems fine without her but she becomes so silent and she looks so sad and inactive when he is not around ! Then my mom felt bad for her at first and thought I was cruel for separating them so she said if you don't let them be in the same cage just let them be in the same room! That was crazy! The female kept trying to do everything to get out of her cage and go reach him... they kept shouting for each other.. and even when they stopped shouting the female would keep trying everything to reach him refused to eat anything for the whole day! Then I felt so bad and put them back together you can't believe right after i put her she started biting and hurting him crazily !! Like whattt!??? I can't get it?!?!?! And don't get me wrong it is not playing I know how fighting is like!
    So people suggested me to have both their cage beside each other so that they won't fight and won't miss each other I did and still the same thing she was trying to go reach him for the whole 2 days and refused to do anything.. the other times they both would call out for each other and shout back for each other though their cage was next to each other! Even in his cage when he was trying to eat she was trying to eat his food or bite him and annoy him even though she has her own same food!
    This is my first time taking care of birds and I feel so helpless and bad.. like it is my fault that i can't fix it or think of or find the best solution for them.. I'm having so much stress for months after my mom brought them...
    Not only that hearing them shouting all the time everyday is so annoying, i'm working and having online meetings many times in a day and working with them like that is so hard...
    Should i completely separate them? Would that be cruel ? Please what can i do?
    Oh by the way they used to scream but not as much as now and i noticed they actually started screaming that much after I left them home for days and got back home late coz i was really busy that time.. I let them be out of the cage all the day when I was away so that they wouldn' t be bored in the cage.. they had enough food and water and I always made sure I cleaned the cage well.
    They usually screamed when they wanted to get out of the cage or when they were bored but now they even scream when they're out of the cage and even fight outside....
    They told me not to put a nesting box until I make sure they're bonded and said that they're still not bonded and keeps fighting so it won't help even if I put a nesting box, could it be possible they fight coz she doesn't have any space to lay on eggs? But she was still fighting with him even when i had put the nesting box inside.. coz the pet store owner told my mom the female would have eggs soon around 2 days later or smth when she first brought them home.. but nothing happened though the box was there.. now i took it away after about 3 weeks of being in our home.. is it a bad idea?

      I'm sorry to hear you're in such a tricky situation! When we only had Misty and Blue, it was a little like that, but a lot milder. Misty also bossed Blue around but in the end she has a quiet character so she didn't fight him much.
      After a couple of years of observing budgies, I noticed they are really sensitive towards all other birds and they even treat each bird differently based on their character. It's like they want to be around birds that are similar to them and when a bird is too different they can get very hostile or anxious. Especially females seem that way. Our males hang out together even though they have pretty different characters, but the females are really complicated.
      We recently had to put Mini in a cage with Micky, her partner, because she was getting aggressive to Misty and Misty's babies. She was also biting our fingers when we tried to separate her from the others. Turns out she was very hormonal and she laid eggs a few days after we installed a nest on the cage where we put her and Micky. Mini even wounded our other female, Pacalina, when she came too close (thankfully only a minor wound).
      I've noticed hormones play a huge role in how females are. Males as well, but I've never seen males get that aggressive. You can see a female is especially hormonal when she has a thick brown cere (the part above the beak). Mini and Pacalina both had that during their most aggressive period. We felt sad about locking Mini and Micky up, but after a few days they made peace with it. With your budgies it's a bit trickier because they would both be alone when you separate them.
      One solution might be to make the female less hormonal. Which is not as easily said as done, but I do think it's the hormones. So far I read that it's important that they sleep in a dark quiet room for 10-12 hours each night. That can lower hormone levels. There are also some foods to avoid: oats and hanf seeds make them hormonal. Unfortunately I don't know more about that topic at the moment, but I can do some more research.
      One thing that worked for us to make Misty and Blue less anxious, was to get two more birds (Micky and Mini), but I get that getting more birds is hard for many people. I think it helped for us because it changed the dynamics of the group. Misty realized she was no longer the leader because Mini is more dominant, but apart from what happened a few weeks ago, Mini actually doesn't attack others. She was just extremely restless because she was about to lay eggs.
      As a side note, do you have any mirrors for your budgies? Those can really make them hormonal.
      Based on what you wrote, it sounds to me like the female feels like the male is not a suitable partner, but she still needs to fulfill social needs since they're group animals. So she seems kind of torn between not feeling comfortable enough around the male but also not wanting to be alone.
      I think there are also herbal teas that can calm budgies down (when you let it cool down and put it in their water bottle) but I'd have to research it.
      Do you have chew toys or forage toys for them? One thing that helps our females is keeping them busy with chewing things. We have cork wood in several spots and they spend hours chewing it. I've noticed they get restless when they don't have enough things to chew or explore.
      I think if the situation stays like that, it might be best if your male and female both get a different partner in the future, but maybe some of the things I mentioned can still help. The last thing you'd want is to send a bird away or swap it or anything like that. I'll do some more research and hope to find something that could help!

      Thank you soo much I really needed to talk to someone about that!! Just by talking about it I feel like I somehow released a lot of stress.
      When we first got them the female's cere was white then recently got brown which I believe after that she became more aggressive.
      I think you're quite right about that the female doesn't feel like he suits her but she doesn't want to be alone at the same time.
      I figured out most of the times she goes to him and asks him to feed her, he sometimes does but some other times he refuses and runs away and doesn't wanna share it with her, he is so much better at chewing stuffs and can eat and finish foods much faster but the female is slower and more patient with eating (so she is like stopp eating all the food you're going to finish it up, I'm the one who should eat it) HAHA
      I noticed that when the female asks some certain stuffs the male is not willing to do that, sometimes she is chasing him a lot and he keeps trying to get away from her.. I see the male feeding her and grooming her many times but the female doesn't do that I only caught her doing that few times and I was so happy thought they were going along well (but it happens so rarely)
      For the mirror, before I buy anything, feed them anything or just do anything with them I research a lot, so based on what i read in most articles I guess it is a bad idea to put mirror in their cage so i didn't buy any.
      They do have a wooden thing which they can sit on idk what it's called in English haha, and they love it a lot.. the first night I bought a new cage and set up for them they immediately went for the wood and started chewing on it, they have cuttlebone too which recently became their favorite, and a cloth toy (god don't know how to mention it or what it is called XD) to chew on as well.
      One more thing, you mentioned about their diet I bought them new mixed seeds which also has oats so this may made her more hormonal? (Btw i don't only give them seeds I give them fresh foods and healthy foods as well).
      About sleeping, I really wish I could let them sleep earlier but I work at night and have classes until around 11.. I cover their cage but it seems they don't sleep when they hear me talking so they start singing all the time until I finish my online classes.
      And getting 2 more budgies is going to be really hard for me, I feel like the more budgies the more time and effort it takes which I may not have enough not only that I don't think I can afford having 4 of them (I may need a larger cage, more toys and perches, buying more foods and so on...)
      so I really wish they're going to go along well with each other, I love both of them so much and will miss them If I pass any of them to somebody else ...I really wish they could get bonded but if not.. I may have no choice than finding different partners for them😥💔
      I trulyyy appreciate your time and your explanation you really helped me a lot❤ can't thank you enough 💕💕💕💕 thanks a lottt for listening.🙏

      @@DeYaa gladly done 😊 I know how it feels to have problems with the birds and not knowing how to solve them.
      I noticed seed mixes often add hempseeds (last time I wrote hanf but I realise that’s the wrong term) and/or oats. It could be a reason for the hormonal behaviour. Although I think sleep plays an even bigger role. But I get that in your situation it’s hard because of your online classes. I think our females are also more hormonal currently because we put a night light in their room which is a bit too bright. But we had to put it there for their safety because sometimes they flew against things in the room and they often fought because they were scared in the dark. So sometimes you have to make sacrifices like that.
      Sounds like your female is currently in breeding condition. After a while her cere will become white again and hopefully she’s quieter again then. Usually they have a brown cere for a few months and then they go back to normal.
      I’ve noticed most budgies have that same fear that your female has. That someone else will eat all the food and they will not have enough. I guess that’s why she often chases him.
      I really hope they will get along better and that you will find a good solution!

      @@ManishaKumari-mq4nz yeah it's quite typical for female budgies 😅 Our Misty was also stressed a lot at the start. She didn't scream because she's a quiet bird, but she definitely did not get along nicely with our first male. I think Misty got better when we got another budgie pair and when she learned to be outside of the cage as well.
      I think sometimes females also have bad experiences at shops or breeders and then they're very sensitive 🤷‍♀️

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Před 2 lety +1

      Is her cere brown/crusty? In that case it means she's hormonal and more likely to be irritated or anxious. One thing that's important is that they sleep about 10-12 hours per night in a dark enough room.
      It's also possible that she's bored. Our females really like it when they have things to chew and explore. We always have some cork wood blocks because they love those. And random soft wood (from empty honey sticks) throughout their room. We also have some foraging toys.
      Sometimes it can be tricky with females. Our Mini and Pacalina have been screaming daily lately. Not all day (thank God), but especially in the afternoon for some reason. Sometimes it helps to give a lettuce leaf or millet spray to distract them. Pacalina is really hormonal at the moment, so I guess that's why she's screaming. And Mini is angry that she's stuck in a breeding cage 😋

      But maybe boredom is rather the reason. That's what I usually suspect with our females anyway. They are always happiest when they just got a fresh block of cork wood that they can shred 😋
      I did see a book about screaming and biting and the author said you can solve bad behavior with click training, by encouraging 'desired' behavior. I think the main goal is to click and give a treat whenever they sing nicely, sit calmly, care for each other (and any other positive behavior) and after a while they want to show the behavior that gives them rewards. I've never tried that method for screaming, but maybe it could help. It does take some time and effort 🙃

      @misty_blue  Před 2 lety +1

      Female budgies can be a bit tricky. Our females scream the most. Sometimes at the sun or rain or a storm. Sometimes they look bored or annoyed. It does help when they have cork wood or chew toys to chew. Then they are too busy to scream. Taming them can also be harder. Only one of our three females jumps on our hands but she does bite a little because she doesn't completely trust it. I think it's also in their nature because they are most vulnerable. Especially when they know they might have eggs/chicks.

      @misty_blue  Před rokem +1

      Yeah it can be tricky to have both budgies and canaries/finches. Budgies generally go best with cockatiels. Do your budgies have enough to distract them? Like chew toys, things to climb, grass, cork, etc. I've noticed our budgies scream less when they're busy playing and chewing. But it's definitely tricky because they're very territorial and always try to show they're the 'top of the flock'. One of our budgies always screams at me because she tries to dominate me 😂 But she doesn't scream at my husband because she notices his authority and doesn't dare to challenge him 😋

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Před rokem

      @@elissasaliba6848 yeah, our budgies didn't understand toys at first either 😋 It takes a while until they learn to play. I'm not sure if getting a cockatiel will make them scream less. I think they would still feel territorial towards the canaries and finches. I think giving them more things to do might help. They're very active creatures and need a lot of entertainment. What keeps our birds entertained for hours is wild grass and carrot greens. I just hang a bush on the cage and they spend hours chewing it 😋

    Mine does it first thing every morning or when there’s a discussion going on. Those are the only times. It’s beyond annoying because we can’t hear each other speak and it wakes us up in the morning. It’s the only thing I hate about having a bird is the squawking.

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Před 2 lety +1

      Maybe he is trying to join the discussion 😂 It can definitely be annoying in the morning. Especially in summer they wake up so early. We do have a curtain in their room so they wake up a bit slower, but it's still light enough that they start singing very early. I think when you make the room darker until you wake up, they are quieter in the morning. Although some get scared when it's too dark.

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Před 2 lety

      Have you tried following a kind of training program? Budgies usually need a clear routine that they can get used to because they don't like unpredictable things. For instance, it's also best to feed them at the same time(s) every day, so they know what to expect. You can also try a taming routine where you start very slowly and take small steps.
      For instance, start by just being near their cage a lot, without coming close to them or entering their cage. When they see you near the cage while you don't try to touch them or anything, they learn that your presence is not a threat. Once you feel like they are comfortable with that, you can try the next step, like slowly placing a hand on their cage and leaving it there for a few minutes a few times per day. Then they learn your hand is not a threat.
      Next, you could try to place a finger on a perch in the cage. It's important not to move much and let them come to you. It can also help to speak to them quietly while you are doing the training routine.
      If you have spray millet, you can also use that because they find it hard to resist. When you hand feed them, it gives you a chance to bond with them.

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Před 3 lety

      It depends on how they scream. Sometimes they scream out of happiness or excitement. Maybe you can see from their body language. If they scream and kind of make their body narrow or when they jump/fly nervously, maybe it means they don't like the music. But I've noticed budgies generally like noise 😋 When we vacuum clean or do laundry they love it and chirp and sing.
      But it's hard to tell when I don't hear how your budgies are screaming 🤭

    • @misty_blue
      @misty_blue  Před 3 lety +4

      Did you recently get her? And is she your only bird? Many budgies are pretty quiet the first days to months in a new home. They need to get used to the new place to feel comfortable. When they are not with other birds, they can be more quiet because they don't hear other birds and they don't have other birds to sing to.
      One way to encourage them to sing, is playing a budgie video to them (I like the one from Mango and Chutney).
      Our Misty was quiet the first 2 years or something 😋 Recently she's started to bloom and sings a lot to our three other birds 😊
