Interestingly enough, as a songwriter, he was counting syllables, not words. That's why "It's getting better" made sense to him.
He thinks in lyrics. Makes sense
Me too.
I thought he was counting people.
wow! yes!
Well spotted.
“And when she dropped me on my head as a baby, she said,…’I meant it.’” His timing on that was perfect. I’m still laughing.😂
Maybe that’s why he had that issue counting to 5 words😬
He said “I meant to*’ not ‘I meant it’ lol 😂 His Irish accent got in the way
Actually he looked half drunk. You haven’t witnessed anything special here…
“I’m a songwriter, not a mathematician.”
That’s the best last five words I’ve heard yet. 🎉
That would be "I'm a songwriter, not a...."
@@ericminch and he could have just said “it’s getting better every day”
That's six words. Feel free to call me a Buzz Kill. I deserve it.
@@davenorth8922 thus proving he’s not a mathematician
@@happypasta6 Yes, but the Beatle lyric he's referring to goes 'It's getting better all the time'
What they are saying about "One" is how perfect songs should sound. It should sound familiar like its always existed and yet new. I love how comedians are some of the best appreciators of music and musicians the best appreciators of comedy.
And, as a long time student of neuroscience, I can add that even after we understand how the mind works, we'll still have a lot of work before we understand how music and comedy work.
@@ericminch Music and comedy: the last frontiers between us and AI.
I feel the same way about Everybody Hurts. Like it was part an old saying and part something new for everyone.
"Stay", "Please", are just 2 of my fav songs. Rattle and Hum and Joshua Tree are absolute perfect albums too. What a poet!
Genuinely haven't laughed this hard in AGES - Stephen and Bono's chemistry was just 👌🏾
Yes, such chemistry, but also a weird energy
@@TheloniousCube I totally agree. I couldn’t tell if the tension was real or jokingly manufactured.
I feel like you need to get out more.
We need more humans like this human. ❤
And he's a really great guy in real life too. Very down to Earth.
@@whaleymom76 Have you read [or listened to him read] Surrender?
@@jansmitowiczauthor78 It's on my Wish List. I just have to wait for my April audiobook credit so I can buy it. 🙂
The rendition of dueling Catholics was great.
Common misconception is that Bono is Catholic just because he's Irish. He is Protestant!
Bono is the child of a Protestant and a Catholic and has the good sense to reject all organised religions/labels and just "go direct" rather than through any intermediary organisation - to study the bible to try to be the best Christian he can be.
@@classactsexpertiseandinspi4815 You're absolutely right, I had forgotten that fact!
2:30 brilliant hearing Stephen say this about U2's "One" -- universal music
One is my favorite U2 song as well, Stephen ❤🏳🌈
For all of my brothers lost to AIDS, the first pandemic of my lifetime.
I love you David Wojnarowicz.

💗🖖✌️💙
Every minute of this questionert was pure gold.
He is a narcissist WEF puppet.
Colbert getting sauced during an interview with Bono is remarkably delightful.
40 was my favorite! I saw them in Cork in a soccer field. It started to rain by the 3rd song. NOT ONE person left. We were all embarrassing and singing every song. One of the last times I heard “40”. I thank Bono for that memory and many others. I live in Dublin. He went in to the pub where my daughter was working about 4 years ago. He got on stage. My daughter videoed the whole thing. He came up right to her and cupped her face and sang to her. SHE will never forget that. ❤❤
When he was talking about the song Immortality by the Bee Gees and hearing Barry Gibb sing is alone [as ALL his siblings have passed], I will admit I started ugly crying. What a beautiful thing to talk about and a beautiful tribute to another great band and song. Class.
I’ve never heard anyone else mention the smell of their mother’s ironing. 🥰 It may be my favorite part of quilting because of that memory. ☘️💚☘️💚☘️💚
When Bono said at two he knew people and what they were like ,he was talking about discernment which is a gift from God
And as much of a heap of bullshit as Reiki or any of that.
Best questionert ever. All the drinking didn’t hurt either. Bono is such a deep thinker and funny too. I’m a song writer, not a mathematician 🔥🔥❤️❤️
Yeah, and then Bono asks well what number am I thinking of?
Has zero been asked yet?
@@violetqueen450 👍🏻YES
Until now my favorite questionnaire recipient was Shaq. But this is now my favorite. Hilarious, deep.
Best questionnaire of all time.
I hope Bono knows how much we love him. ❤
So masterful, thank you Stephen for sharing that piece of Bono with us. You weren't too shabby neither!!
I kept waiting for the sloppy drunk "I looove you maaaan!"
I was waiting for that lol
Colbert barely lets the drink touch his lips. It’s a little thing that always bugs me watching him “ drink “ on his show. Now if they did shots between questions, then we’d really have some fun!
I was waiting for that one has well LMAO..
Beautiful. Also, from the first attempt, I kept saying “IT’S GETTING BETTER EVERY DAY!”, to somehow try to help him out with the 5 words.😂
Me too Me too!
Same!!!
each day
Yes, but the Beatle lyric he's referring to goes 'It's getting better all the time
The CHEMISTRY!!!!! These t wo were literally riffing off of each other with the natural feel of brothers!! This is soon to become one of Stephen's most iconic and memorable interview pieces. So good!!
I just loved watching the whole Questionert and seeing them both getting more and more tiddly. 🤣
You two were priceless! I loved “now is the time we stop fighting and start crying!”😂. Brilliant Irish comment😂 I’d love to spend an afternoon with Stephen and Bono😊. Can you imagine? Me either!😂
I can’t but, damn that would be mind blowing!❤
Can I sign up somewhere?
Bono keeps challenging Steven at drinking. So funny to keep up 🍻
Best "You Are Known" ever!
Stephen was clearly thinking about the number one!
weren't we all, but bono is so much deeper and humble than that
I love all the comments. Bono and Stephen are pure gold. I too experienced hearing a song for the first time and thinking I had known it all along - eternal like Bono said. Had anyone else experienced this phenomenon? “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” is one of them.
Cheers.
When "Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young came out, my roommate at the time said he felt like the song was an instant classic if not "had always been there." I agreed. Edge said the opening riff on "Vertigo" felt to him like an eternal riff when he came up with it. I don't know if I felt that way about "Still Haven't Found" ever but I always felt like that song has a flow to it that is sheer pop/rock perfection to me, from beginning to end. "In My Life" by the Beatles is another. For many, it's "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys.
Back in the '80's I heard "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics in the car, and I turned up the radio thinking "I've always liked this" and then I realised it was my first time hearing it.
I’ve watched a bunch of these questionnaires (for some reason) and this is the greatest of them all: he’s so honest, genuine, moving, and unpredictable… but then that could be the bourbon talking lol
My personal preference is Sting, 1, Keanu Reeves ,2, Bono, 3. ;)
Thank you Bono for reminding me that we are a young country and we absolutely don’t know who we are yet. Your country has been through this many times over the centuries. I now have more hope.
Omg! I have been a fan of his since 1984 and he was always so serious. This is the Bono that is behind the legend! I still love him soo much!!!! His book is magical! He’s human and a legend
Love Bono and U2s music. There will never be another band like them. They wonderful! Great interview!
"It's getting better every day" Fixed that for you.
I owed you at least one, since you fixed a lot of shit in my head and my heart along the way with your music.
Somebody has been reading Fr. Richard Rohr. 🥰
Yes I caught that too.
@@tomyoung8229 On part one where he said, "everyone is your neighbor, and everyone is also Christ," it brought tears to my eyes. So beautiful; I've learned so much from Richard.
OMG. My Dad, his 6 brothers and a million cousins and relatives I grew up with were Irish. "This is the part where we stop fighting and start crying..." So true! With missing teeth and bloody knuckles, the furniture overturned, then they go find another bottle with arms wrapped around each other, "I love you, man..."
Just “Getting Better All The Time” is five words…
I see that you're a mathematician.
"...Can't get much worse."--J. Lennon, P. McCartney
@@philster1883 yup. Thought of that song too.
How truly adorable and fun to have a drink with these two! Gold!
Best Colbert questionnaire ever!
I would LOVE a weekly series of "The Colbert Questionert"
I love men that can eviscerate with their intelligence and wit. All whilst poking fun at themselves. That stage was on fire with sexiness. 🔥🧠🤤
Love 💕 Bono🤗
Rumor is that Bono wrote “One” in 5 minutes! I heard that song and I knew that would be one of the biggest hits in the world
Loved this interview, LOVE BONO, and love the Irish.
I could watch the Stephen and Bono show every day tbh
Ohhhh! These two are beguiling. 💗🔥❤
Thanks Mom for my Irish blood. ❤️
I Hope Bono doesn't stop being kind because the world needs more kindness right now! Also, I too was thinking that "It's getting better" was a good answerI guess I forgot to count the words too!
"Isn't it interesting how the personal is Universal? I mean, if you're honest about it." THAT hit me like a ton of bricks! Because even the closest ppl in my life wanna speak in bumper sticker, Bible verses, socially acceptable niceties or just say I'm fine, but the few rare times one of them finally, REALLY open their hearts, trusted me and had the courage to say "Ok, look, this is what I'm actually going through.." Every single time, I've said, "Oh My Gosh! I thought it was just ME!"
Couldnt love any musician more
Incredible Bono please do this again Colbert was pretty awesome too
Cute record store clerk recommends the U2 album October, so I buy it. Had no idea what superstars they would become.
What happened to the store clerk?
Gloria - magical song
bono is as perfect a match for stephen colbert as bruce springsteen is for jon stewart
One of the best SQ's so far. And I KNEW he was going to name another fruit!
"Is potato"
Lemon by U2 is a great song
@@EGC316 Were you disappointed no one went "Wooo, Lemon! Seeker in the sunlight!" too?
1:47 ....still one of the most underappreciated masterpieces of the 90's. I mean, seriously... and like Colbert said. Go back and listen to that song because it's such a beautiful piece. And not to sound pretentious over here, it's also a very deep and proactive song. I know a lot of people like to dunk on the U2 of the mid 2000's and up, but they either don't know or tend to forget that U2 was the biggest and one of the best bands in the world during the 80's and 90's. Put some respect on their name!!
Fantastic Questionert.
I'm just sad it's over.
my five words...I love you Stephen Colbert
Bono is so so so special! So happy to share this planet with him!
Cried laughing! Brilliant! Bet they didn't have much of that bottle left once the show was over!
Great visit. The man's extrodinary. Bono's favourite song.....Immortality....really lovely song. Deep lyrics. Bee Gee's wrote a lot of beautiful music with great lyrics that is not known.
How fun watching you both getting more tipsy as the conversation goes on and becomes more fun! 😊
Brilliant. All day long, every day, Brilliant Interview.
I didn’t want this to end. ❤
The musicians are always the best ones!
I could listen to Colbert Questionert all day!
What a great exchange. It deserved to be in two parts. Good on ya Bono. 😻✌I love when he goes into that Bob Marley song. I was an early fan of U2...but I wish they hadn't made that horrible, cringe-fest of a movie.
I had the same experience Stephen's talking about with "One". Only it was "Sweet Dreams" Eurythmics. "Ah, I've always liked this song" I thought. Then I realised it was the first time I'd heard it. Maybe a similar experience with McCartney and "Yesterday" it was there in the ether, and he just "caught it" Song-catching
I enjoyed that, as the whiskey went down, his accent got broader! 🥃
"I'm a songwriter, not mathematician." That's his 5 words (yes, I made the 6 into 5 removing the repeated 'a' though DOES it count if you use the same word twice? Maybe not-it's all about the ONE'S perspective!), and they're a perfect close. It also works (with "not" on the upbeat) rhythmically as it should. Their chemistry together is pure🔥🔥, and I'm not even talking about 25th row of orchestra section lighter-lighting and whoo-hooing.
This interview proving Bono is still amazing. His tribute to the legend Bob Marley in which Stephen doesn’t understand Reggae and Bono tries to get the band to play.
I know exactly what Stephen is talking about regarding feeling like a song has to have been out there for way longer because they just *feel* ancient and perfectly-formed. Like they are the absolute embodiment of that song. I don't have words to describe it, unfortunately.
I love this so much! LOVE IT!!!
It's getting better every day!
I’m Irish also and I have always loved U2 ,bono is just brilliant
Best Colbert questionnaire ever
Loved it!! thank you Stephen and Bono, that was the laughs I needed today!! much love. 😂🥰
How great is Bono here???!!!! I've changed my mind about him.
My crush on Bono just grew even more, love their drinking, laughing, having a ball of a time. Love how Bono answers, he is a brilliant genius storyteller and intelligent articulate eloquent wit, so is Stephen. I do not have a fave moment of this entire interview and questionnaire. ❤ 🥵 🤤 😆🤣😂👑💎⚜️
Best. interview. ever.
I've long wondered what a gritty interview of a legend would be like if it occurred over hard liquor in the booth at a bar. Now I have a better idea. This "Being Known" interview segment between Colbert and Bono is of the most interesting and insightful conversations on a late show I can remember.
That was one of the most entertaining questionnaires I have seen.
When asked what number, 'm still waiting for someone to answer "One more than the number I am thinking of."
Fantastic interview I loved it!
Absolutely loved this 😊🙌🏻👏🏻
Extreme Awesomeness 👍😎💗
Love Bono !!!! 👍🎸💗
Omg I love these two I could listen to them talk for hours. 💙
One is the only # that you every need!!! 3 dog night 🌙 as in a band from the 70s😊
Now off to my favorite adult beverage store! That was just wonderful.
LOL enjoy! and cheers!
Bono at the end of the interview : "Can I take away the bottle?
Oh, this was priceless.
I would love to discuss faith with those two. They are awesome.
Fantastic interview. Having a drink, amazing tool.
This was the best one yet
STEPHAN WAS STAR STRUCK!!
Luv this Irish dude so much. Thanks for a superb interview Stephen!
Immortality is quite well known as sung by Celine Dion and was also part of the Saturday Night Fever Musical. Love it.
It is getting better continuously
I can't wait to read this book. Bono, it would be awesome if you would be the one to read it for audible. For those of us who experience the challenge of dyslexia....
Because your voice would be the most awesome voice to hear it in.
Not sure where you live, but the US version (and I have to believe the UK one as well) is narrated by Bono
It's great on Audible and read by Bono.
@@tubularbells0677 thank you so much! I am going to find it right now on audible.
The number was clearly ONE! 🥰
Had to watch the second part. They are so low key and hilarious.
I didn't know how awesome this guy was.
Love the song "one".
