The car that is dumped in this video is 4151, a slant end R40. It was withdrawn from use in April 2008 and reefed in New Jersey on 09/08/2008. New Jersey opted to stop using subway cars for reefs after only 2 batches of 50, because the cars deteriorated underwater much faster than anticipated. Originally they planned to take up to 600 of the R32 through R42 types.
This makes no fucking sense. Why don't they make one model of a train and stick with it. These R40's were perfectly good running trains, but NOO, they needa throw it in the damn ocean.

The R46 structure was already designed for the LIRR and the aborted Queens Super Express Bypass.

The R40s and R42s (a few of the latter still running on the J line) were becoming structurally unsound, thanks to St. Louis Car's shotwelding of stainless steel parts to carbon steel and the extreme corrosion at the points where they were joined; that's what killed the R44 cars. Kawasaki had proposed useing the all-stainless steel and aluminum R32 shells to remanufacture them as new cars with the R160 features in A-B-B-B-A unit configuration like the R160s.
The cost of realigning the sides of the A units to line the doors up with each other (necessary to accomodate the necessary full-length cabs) was cost prohibitive. However, the 75-foot all-stainless steel R46s are being considered for such a re-fit, with the same ceiling, lighting, speakers and HVAC units as the R160, fluting added to the exterior roof structure, similar Kawasaki trucks (modified to handle the weight of the heavier cars), and Bombardier propulsion in current A-B-B-A form.

you know the cars turn into a good home for the animals who live underwater? coral and other life populate the old subway cars, and its even been proven beneficial. This is not some attempt to pollute the ocean. Turning them into 'fancy cars' will just waste revenue.
@tryithere The V sets on the Cityrail Network in Sydney Australia were released in 1968 and there still on the rails (last one put on to tracks in 1989) so some of which are 44 odd years old and there a good reliable train there soon to be retired from 2020, there an awesome train and despite there age they are quieter and more comfertable then the Newer trains on the cityrail fleet but I prefer the Tangara's (Tangara is an aboriginal word meaing "TO GO" known as the T and G sets)

I think you mean an R142 2 train, an R62 3 train, and an R62A 4 train. R160, R46 and R68 are B Division trains not A Division trains. Also R46A does not exist
The following classes: -R26s -R28s -R29s -R33/33 WFs -R36/WFs ^ Those were all Redbirds -R32s -R38s -R40 Slants -R40Ms -R42s and a few R62/62As. I believe that's it.
Plus, is good for the enviroment, They cleaned all the subway cars and they did alot of hard work to remove every single piece of harmful materials, is a eco system now making it good for the enviroment. Some engineers even sank a cleaned up and renovated aircraft carrier to make a eco system. They did the same to it as the metro cars. Dont take stuff for granted.
Why bother buying entire new subway cars, just replace the engines or electrical stuff in the old cars and keep using the parts that you can. Such a waste to just throw them away.

I'm surprised some R32s are still in service after the R38s, R40s, and R44s retired. The R32s were built before the R38s, R40s, and R44s.
