Creating an artificial reef by sinking subway cars

  • Thirty retired MTA subway cars were sunk off the coast of Cape May on Monday to help create the nation's most extensive artificial reef system. The subway cars provide a good habitat for marine life and eventually more than 600 will be found in the ocean around the area.

    As with all "artificial reefing," the potentially hazardous components are stripped before the artificial reef objects (subway cars, ships) are put on those barges. They pollute the water about as much as a rock would.

    Wow... Amazing.. Indonesian sea need artificial reef like that...
    and I saw a pile more than 100 used train like that in Purwakarta station.

    I know this is for fish but would that be water pollution? Just say no if i am wrong.

      no, they worked very hard to remove every harmful component in the car and they also have to wash the entire car before being reefs

      The old cars provided those old scratches on windows and screeches which is one thing we cant hear anymore

    the R40s were the ugliest subway cars in the world. I hated driving em! They will scare away the fish!

      How does it pollute, they removed all the components, it is just the shell so it is actually good for the fish to live in.
