- Alt Mom: Any mom who raises their kids in an alternative fashion to how they were raised. Probably also has tattoos and at least a chunk of brightly colored hair. Todays alt mom at the table discusses how expensive children actually are and they develop fandoms at the age of 4.
This show is dedicated to maintaining your relationship while also trying not to mess up your kids. Relationships are hard enough. When you add kids, everything ends up passing through a parent-colored filter. How will this affect the kids? Am I a partner or a parent first? #AltMom At The Table isn't expert advice or fix-all hacks. It's just 2 people who established an accidental routine of on-purpose communication & had enough adult money to buy microphones. We're chatting about kids, marriage, & whatever else comes to mind.
A production of Pleasant Peasant Media. #AltMom At The Table is hosted by Jackson Laithland & Gwenna Laithland.
Intro and Outro music is by Jackson Laithland.

"Son-of-a-ME!" Stealing, omg. And yes, twins do best in separate classrooms.
Thank you for humor & insight. You make me feel seen.
You need a unicorn and a dinosaur pin, that way when the inevitable “it doesn’t have a-“ fit begins you can put the pin on it and go “yeah it does, see here’s -“
Patches and pins. Both are very removable with taste or growth.
Brilliant!
Iron on patches will literally save your life, or if you feel creative rubber stamps and fabric paint and make your own logo
Dinosaur skin!! Love that!!
Screw getting unicorn and dino coats. Put some simple patches on the chest, sleeve, whatever. They can even pick WHICH dino or unicorn.
I wish retailers would normalize the concept of grow with me clothing for the Littles so it covers a range of sizes
It’s a money scheme they could do that but they rather make parents buy clothes every few months
the bit about your eldest supporting the littles and helping them was interesting!
My mom refused to buy us playdo. She made all of ours. Flour, salt and water with a couple of drops of food dye. She had the devils own time keeping me from eating it (I liked the salt) after I heard her say it was food safe. She never did work out how to parent a neurodivergent child, so she defaulted to beating me several times a day (until her arm was too tired to lift). That's why I love your gentle parenting content. It's proof that it can be done even with a strong willed chaos potato like Abbie. You folks rock.
I had a rainbow loom when I was younger, actually 3 so I could put them together and make a giant Ursula 🤣 also my thing as a kid was wizard of oz, yes. From 4-8
Jack sounds like he **deserves** a new Hoodie 👍
I have been buying my disadvantaged niece and nephew school supplies. Shop in May at all the 2nd teir retailers like Big Lots, Roses, etc and thrift at Goodwill. Everyone dumps unsold office supplies and school supplies. Good Jansport backpacks for $5, spirals for 0.33, a gallon bag of pens and pencils. I will donate supplies to teachers, but fight back on specific color folders etc. We will clearly label the folders. We also had the play dough thing and i volunteered and made tubs of homemade dough for the whole class cheaper than the individual branded tubs for 1 child.
I feel you. My note are one year apart in age and they played sports, marching band, Boy Scouts. It is not easy also being a single mom to them for almost their entire school years. The ex was not helpful. I thank god every day that my parents where there to help me when I needed help.
Up until recently in my county, multiples were not allowed to share classes due to the fear of misidentifying them and the possibility of them switching classes with each other. It’s cool that you guys were given the option.
I’m so insanely grateful I found you guys! It’s like listening to a conversation I’d have in my head!! Same page all the way
Flesh wrapped potatoes. Sooooooo funny. Last crop of kids. I like your words. Clever
Thankfully in Québec it is illegal to target minors directly with advertising. It's makes a big difference.
If you guys can get Next kids clothes there, my daughter recommends them as they wash & wear well so can be sold on/donated when outgrown. ... on a slightly other note when I was a teen if I wanted a pair of jeans or shoes or whatever that was more than my parents would normally pay, we would compromise and I'd pay the extra to get the brand, cut, colour (whatever.
The only wanting to wear dinosaur underwear reminds me of a thing my dad did that was genius and might help others. He got fabric markers and we sat down one day and decorated all the boring underwear. I don’t know how expensive fabric markers are but i don’t think very, and they can be used to decorate all the boring pairs.
Just make sure they stay hidden the rest of the time because it’s designed not to wash out
You guys have really good voices for podcasting, I know most people can’t always control the way their voices sound but you guys sound great, and unrelated but you kind of sound like one of the hosts of the podcast morbid! If you (or anyone else in the comments) is interested in true crime you should check that one out
I LOOOOOVE just listening to you guys. But I can't be comfortable while listening...why? Because your voices are SO FUCKING soothing!!!!
My youngest starts school for the first time and the school supplies list... This episode hit my feelings there 💀
Omg! I’ve only ever seen your #shorts! I am so so glad you do this! Loved the video! You’re awesome ❤️
Omg I didn't know yall were in OK! If you ever do a meet and greet or something I'd love to thank you in person for all the funny content and encouragement you give in your videos to parents like me. Yall are wonderful!
Y’all are from Oklahoma too I would’ve never know! Love what y’all are doing!!
As an alt mom of 3, one being teen and two being 7/8 I fucking Stan both of you! I feel not alone. I love when my teen says hot topic because ✨yassss✨ but then I also suffer though unicorns and Dino’s because I have “Irish twins” 14 months apart. You save me lol
Omg the cost. My little is in daycare now ... not looking forward to the future costs. 😕
Love how those glasses fit him
I thought she was calling their other kid spf100 I almost spit my drink out laughing 😂😂
Yes, it amazes me how much money we drop for our child, & can't help but wonder how people with more than 1 child could ever keep up with all of it. -I have a cousin my age who has 2 children that both go to daycare who has like maybe half or a third of the income we have, & I'm like racking my brain as to how they're housed, day cared, fed, clothed, & also have toys. -If we had 2, we would be flat broke, even on a six digit annual income. We don't want another child because we had ours at a specific age for health risk reasons & for his Dad to reach retirement eligibility age when he's college aged -but even if we did want another one, we wouldn't be able to afford it without making more money.
My sister has four and I honestly have no clue how she does it on a single stable income. Her partner works seasonally during the harvest months. I would be shocked if she wasn't leaning on extended family and our mother to help pay for it all.
I 1000% recommend introducing your kiddos to the My Little Pony Fandom! The Friendshid ia Magic series is so sweet. Ya'll might like it too!!!
I love this new series…!
Ughhhhh I love this podcast!!
Keep a jarrasic park tag and use a zip tie to attach it to a Walmart brand 😂
School supply shopping sucks your soul. Glad I found your channel, love from your TT spekklellama! 💜
I wish you guys lived closer to ATX because we have a store called Buffalo Exchange (also locations in SA and Houston)
Buffalo Exchange is more my style than Plato’s Closet was growing up. All of the affluent and wealthy students at UT walk down the street to Buffalo Exchange and sell old school clothes and professional interview clothes that their parents bought them for college. I think Gwenna and Abby would love the style at Buffalo Exchange! I’m 27 now and I discovered the store almost a decade ago and it’s still one of my first pics for shopping. I owned a pair of sandals for almost two years that I bought there for like $12.99?? I loved those shoes and even to those day I have two pairs of jeans that I bought at Buffalo Exchange that are still in great condition and they’re my favorite jeans. I bought them for probably $19.99 each. Gwenna and Abby would luuuuuvvvv Buffalo Exchange and should come visit ATX to stock up on clothes for the next year.
I graduated from UT in May and just started my first job here in Austin. I can't believe I'm just now hearing about this place
@@whitneyjameson1849 Congratulations on graduating :) I’m originally from Cibolo, you should check it out. Buffalo Exchange is one of the best stores to ever exist imo haha!
Get some unicorn and dinosaur iron on patches for the coats that might downgrade the whining 😉
Oh my gosh, I didn't realise the school lists start at preschool 😬 yikes! Having kids is expensive enough, but America makes it even more so!
If you want to learn all the Dino names and some about them PBS has dinosaur train, my kids were both obsessed with it from ages 3-6. Helps me talk with my son about his Dino obsession as he is going on 8 and knows so much more than me.
Dinosaur train taught my son all the dinosaurs. It's lovely😮💨
But he loves them. My mom sent him a really cool card with this 3d pop up with dinosaurs on it and he knows them ALL. Not just t red and triceratops, but brachiosaurous, velocoraptor, and pteranadon. Like he's 4. He says their names so well...🥰
Some of those items are crazy to me.. here in Atlantic Canada.. playdough, math mats, etc. That's kind of cool though. I love your channel. I also have two preschoolers, I'm nervous!
Also, one of them is obsessed with Jojo too, and has same sheet set.. -.-
She said nap mats. First time did sound like math mats, but she's meaning nap mats.
I work in a school and have a preschooler. I have 2 of these mats, 1 staring at me right now.
you guys are genius "its dino skin " ! I did the calculation of how much it'd cost to raise a child to 18 : with diapers, birthing, clothes and food It was $300,000 and I buy second hand ! I dread when my kids want "branded "shit. lord help me !
Kid clothes at🎯. They last forever. And there's a vacuum that sounds like park but starts with sh that doesn't burn up with rubber bands or long hair as long as you clean the beater brush bar out frequently. They don't get near the motor or belt.
patches that you sew on simple zip stitch and can be removed put on a pair of jeans or anything else
My daughter likes to tell me I am very much like you in some ways. I take that as a very large complement.
I recently discovered your channel and love it. I would love to parent better. What books, if any, do you recommend for responsive parenting.
I know my kid's therapist recommended "How to talk so your kids will listen, and listen so your kids will talk." It's a pretty good resource for me, anyway.
Respectful parents respectful kids from Sura Hart and Victoria Kindle Hodson 7 Keys to turn family conflict into co-operation. This concept comes from Dr Marshall B Rosenberg writings Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life.
Omg you got tricked into the jojo unicorn bed set too. I had no idea what it was, just unicorn. Now my girls like her music.
We do tbe same Sunday clean day!
The thumbnail looks a lot like a CZcamsr I watch called OneTopicAtATime. This is the first time I’ve tapped a video expecting it to be one of his, but I wasn’t disappointed that it wasn’t one of his.
Love topicy!!!
My little did the dinosaurs, only with the dinosaur name. He can help you can with the Dino names 🤭 but he was 3 or 4 when he decided he was “all meat for the T-Rex to eat”. He’s 6 now, still can tell you all the things about dinosaurs, only now there’s also marine animals and reptiles and snakes and arthropods etc….
I hear you with the teen experimentation phase. My daughter went through skater, emo, Japanese cute goth, goth & from about 25 has been more into stealing my Aladdin pants & tie dye dungarees. Most of these required styles can only be bought in London. Not from the local market. In fact, she got so huge the last month of her pregnancy (3 weeks ago I became Moomin nana, grandma really doesn’t suit me & my real name is Anna, show me a kid under five that can say nana Anna can I have a banana!! Right. Lol). Any way, she stole all my baggy dungarees and silk wrap skirts. I’m never seeing those again. Unless they are on her.
My son basically loved converse, but other than that as long as he thought he looked good, he didn’t mind what he wore. He had fantastic taste in shirts & cargo pants or jeans. What I didn’t think about, when I set a no named brand policy with over exuberant uncles, because they wore Nike & such crap, was that I lived in surf brands at home. Billabong, Animal, Quicksilver (I still do) and 90% of my boots and sandals are DM’s or Rocket Dog. In my defence, I’ve always worked since I was 13 & haven’t grown since I hit 14, and I take really good care of my boots. So my son seemed to stop growing around age 9 and stayed at about 3ft tall and child size 2 in shoes. So kids converse not eye wateringly expensive. Mini Animal for the occasional hoody, jeans & shorts for birthday and Xmas presents. No problem. Really good brand skates. Easy. But then he hit 13/14 and he started to grow. Oh my goddess did he freaking grow. By 18 he was 6 ft & shoe size U.K. 11. And all he wanted to wear was surf brands. That’s when I introduced him to Primark. Uks cheap clothing shop. $12 jeans kind of shop. It was pick a brand name hoody, T-shirt, jeans & trainers for birthday & Xmas the rest of the clothes are coming from primark. So you can wear your £10 black skinny arse jeans with your Animal hoody no one will know. They even do look alike converse for £10. Which my daughter bought tons of for work. As far as skates were concerned cheap or eBay ones until he stopped growing. It was ridiculous trying to keep up with his growth. Then when he left college, he got a job in the only surf & skate brand shop within a 120 mile radius (if you excluded the handful in London). We live in the centre of the country. But he proved he knew his stuff and got a job there & developed an even more expensive taste in clothes. I was over the moon because I got staff family discount on all my stuff too yay. Lockdown killed the little chain unfortunately. Now I get to go mad once a year on hol in the uks surf hot spot. Cornwall. Which is where I get most of my tie dye stuff from too. So I can’t even replace my dungarees my bloody daughter stole until next bloody July. Grrrr. Thankfully. Her feet stopped a size smaller than mine, so still child size with some brands and just that bit too small to steal my boots. Mainly. She did borrow my beloved prized New Rocks once. She didn’t do it again. But she has most of the good stuff I have outgrown. Which annoys me. Because it reminds me how tiny I used to be before my spine buggered up. I miss my vintage tasseled biker jacket that is over 50 years old. I have to pass it hanging in her hallway every time I visit 😭kids are horrid lol.
You can find some reasonably priced unicorn coats on Amazon
drop the tactical hoodie pics, let the masses decide!
Get Jurassic park stickers and put them on the cheaper things and tell him they're Jurassic park.
Or save the tags from things they've grown out of and sew them into the plain jackets.
MY PREEMIE STARTS PRESCHOOL TOO WHOOOOO
What sports is Abby (sp?) partaking in? There's nothing like your first born. ❤️ Especially as a daughter. Spencer's still exists?! At least she has your interests. JoJo Siwa, been through that phase. I respect her as a little entrepreneur and being who she is. I always thought bows, sequence, glitter was gross. To have a daughter that was into it, I had to bite my tongue so she could be happy. The tomboy mom who was first into pink and everything girly having a daughter that asked, "why can't I have that?" Now is the, "I'm a dark soul that wants to paint my room black and engage in witchcraft like mommy".
my mom told me when I was little all I wanted was cat and witch things lol
You don't ever want off brand pencils. Pencils are not all made the same. Cheap pencils have pieces of lead in them instead of a single long rod of lead. This means the cheaper pencils do not sharpen. You literally will shave the pencil to a nub trying to get it to where it is usable. I am a teacher and have spent countless hours trying to get cheap pencils sharpened.
I love you 😍
💚💙
My favorite dinosoaurs are anklyopsaurus plesiosaurus and carnotaurus 🦕🦖💚❤
What do I even need for preschool lmfao
Printout the trucks he loves on iron transfers and iron on cheap tshirts…..
the music is a little bit distracting
