- The Ruger American Gen 2 is an excellent bolt action rifle. In this first range report I share my experience with this compact carbine. Currently I have fired over 200 rounds and have been impressed with the reliability and accuracy of this new offering from Ruger.

I think the safety feature, the ar mag and the affordability will make this my next gun
I think that would be a great decision. They offer it in .308 using a different style of magazine. I would go with the 30 cal option if you plan on using it for hunting anything larger than deer on a regular basis.
The features and variety of cartridges make the American an instant great choice. The 3-position safety and improved feel of the action made me go for the Gen 2. That being said, I do still prefer the position of the M77 safety. That could just be a matter of familiarity , though. Nice, thorough review....kinda reminds me of TNP. Subbed. :)
@@CntBckt Thanks for subscribing! If I sound a little like Nutnfancuy it’s because of the thousands of hours I have spent listening to him. I really enjoyed watching Nut and Dave Canterbury when I was in college. That was many moons ago.
@@TheGearTester Hell yeah. The time you took to talk about the safety is what brought it to mind. It also happens to be the type of info I love in a review. Those types of things are often glossed over in "sizzle reel" reviews. >_>
I like the fact that I can swap mag between my AR and Him I have the same one on 5.56
I am a huge fan of the 3 position safety. I don't walk around with a round in the chamber. I want to keep the action closed to keep debris out of the chamber and action. I have not dropped tested any ruger americans, and I don't know specifically if they are drop safe, I just prefer to keep the chamber of my bolt action rifles empty until I need to shoot.

Thank you for the honesty
You are welcome!
You can put a three position safety on a Mauser action, but it is not standard, it is an aftermarket modification. The three position safety was made famous by the Winchester Model 70, that is a modified Mauser action. After Remington 700s were involved in a few fatal accidents, the three position safety has become more common.
The rear position acting as your standard safety that locks the action. A safety that allows loading and unloading, and standard forward fire. After the lawsuits Remington went through the industry is quickly moving to any system that lets you load and unload on safe.
I have the first ranch in 300 black out red dot it's awesome
I have several Ruger’s . Over the years I have groan to like weaver or Picatiny rail so I can move a scope around to different rifles. The new m77’s hunter models have weaver rails on them now.
I am glad that Ruger is updating / upgrading their M77 line of rifles!
The moment Ruger upgrades the Compact Laminate in .308 with a Picatiny rail I will immediately purchase it.
Just wish someone was making iron sights for this rifle.
Nodak Spud was acquired by Palmetto State Armory and was allegedly going to bring back the Ranch iron sights. Unfortunately, I think PSA has killed the brand. Another reminder that large companies eating small companies is rarely good, even in the firearms industry.

I talked to Mike who use to own NS and now works for PSA.
He promised all last year they, PSA, would make them again. But he keep changing the time, and last time, this year, was totally vague on when or if.
@@pauld3402 Yeah, I'm expecting it to never happen. Eff PSA and them buying out Mom and Pop shops just to kill their products
A bolt action rifle in 5.56 makes a lot of sense. Being able to shoot both 5.56 and .223 spec ammo is really nice. Also, bolt action rifles are much more comfortable to shoot suppressed. Feeding from ar15 magazines is really nice. Just carry extra magazines, no need to single feed rounds into the chamber. 5.56mm/223 ammo is pretty plentiful, and has a variety of different loadings for different applications. There are so many advantages to this chambering, in this rifle. I will get one of the gen II rugers, but I haven't decided on a caliber yet. I'll probably get this model also. It is just a great, utilitarian, paring.
Great points! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
Nice looking Dirty .30. :)
Thanks!
Weaver makes scope mounts that weight 1 oz. If you want to lighten the weight.
Thanks for passing that information along.
Do they come with iron sights ?
Great question! Currently Ruger does not produce any rifles in the Ruger American Line that have iron sights. The Ruger Gunsite Scout is their only bolt action that comes equipped with iron sights from the factory. I hope they will begin producing a version of this rifle with iron sights and an extended optics base similar to the one that is on the new production Marlin lever action rifles.
It’s a crying shame! I wished they would put some kind of irons on this gun!
No, but they can easily and cheaply be added. 99% of shooters dont even want them, except for the 1% that REALLY wamt them. But adding irons to a bolt gun is not a very difficult thing to do.
@@Mr.Ut21 Please define what adding iron sights to a gun “cheaply” would cost… I assume you mean that it would be affordable.
Iron sights on a working rifle should be heavy encouragement. Most people have no idea what they need or want. 99% of people only want what they see on instagram/social media.
Not trying to be overly aggressive. Just wanted to engage in a spirited discussion!
Skinner sights has front and rear sights for these.
I want to get that rifle I have the gen 1 in 7.62x39 but the gen2 seems nice not sure if I should get the 6.5 Grendel or 556
What do you like about the 6.5 Grendel? What application or situation do you feel it excels at? I’m interested in your perspective.
@@TheGearTester I want the 6.5 to coyote hunt I think the new gen2 would be perfect with a primary arms predator 1-6 optic
I watched the video, bu I don't recall you saying what twist the barrel is?
1:8 RH per Rugers website.
Damn 223 throwing fire out that can lol.
The suppressor is less than impressive! Its a K can show its short and has very few baffles.
