The CZ 457 vs the Ruger American both in 22LR, we put the accuracy to the test using Eley High Velocity 38gr HP and as you can see in this review, both are great rifles. Which do you prefer and why? Comment below!

I’ve seen a couple of your previous videos, but after watching this one I immediately became a subscriber. Your test protocol was literally the best of countless others I’ve seen: very similar rifles, identical optics, excellent target design to minimize aiming errors, good weather conditions, just one ammunition type, and a significant number of 10-shot(!) groups are literally nothing I’ve ever seen elsewhere.
I recently watched a “test” of a dozen or so very different types of ammunition fired one after another in three-shot(!!) groups. In one string an inexpensive budget brand of ammo produced the smallest group-no doubt by chance-and the tester then pronounced that it was obviously the best. How anyone could take such an effort the least bit seriously is beyond me.
Ditto.

I am a Ruger American man through and through. You cannot bet it for price and reliability. For plinking or a bit of hunting why spend more than you have to!
Awesome review Ozzie. Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate glad you liked it 👍
The thing I like the most about CZ is the consistent size grouping as we saw in the video. I have a .22 and .17 Hmr both CZ and they both shoot tight groups consistently. Great video mate
Can we all pause to appreciate that about a gazzlion dollareedoos were spent on ammo for this video?!?
I’d hate to add up the entire amount of ammo I’ve shot since starting my channel 😳😂
@@ozziereviews Might be worth it if you can deduct it from your taxes as "Business Expenses" (But also I have no idea how taxes work in AUS so maybe not)
@@ozziereviews How much is SK or like federal bulk pack 22lr where you live?
I always love an honest review. Have both and love both.
Just recently purchased a CZ 457 Canadian with a red walnut stock and the Canadian maple leaf embossed on it. Beautiful rifle, just love it.
Solid shooting. Great work!
Awesome channel.Great review and nice shooting.👍🏻
I enjoyed this vid very much. I have a CZ 452FS and I absolutely love it. But, I don't have a Ruger American. I was happy to see how well yours performed.
I got the Ruger American In 22lr as my first rifle after watching your original review of it back in 2016 and I absolutely love it put close to 2000 rounds through it and have never had a single problem.
Same here mate, I really like them
Wouldn’t have expected that! Excellent video 💥💥🍻
Glad you enjoyed it
I’ve been torn between the both of these for a while now, I’ve had so many people tell me if it ain’t CZ it ain’t shit, but I really like the Ruger for the price it is and it’s application. I think you’ve just helped me make up my mind! Plus I love the synthetics!
Love your reviews mate keep ‘em coming.
Great video thanks. I bought a CZ 457 Synthetic last year for squirrel hunting and it shot ok with Norma Tac-22 Subsonic @ 50 yards. For kicks and giggles I added a LimbSaver harmonic dampener and oh man did the groups tighten up. While it's not in the same league as either of my 457 Varmint MTR's it's definitely a keeper.
They make a great rifle for the price
Cheers for the reviews mate. I have both rifles, the CZ in 22lr and the Ruger American in 223. Great reliability and accuracy from both.
Yup I couldn’t decide so I got both lol
thanks for the content very informative
My pleasure!
Nice work I was hoping that would be the case
I own the RAR Target version. I am extremely pleased with it. I'd have liked to seen this review done again with a "Standard velocity" ammo. I'm sure that groups from both guns would shrink. But I like seeing a true 10 shot grouping. Both rifles performed very well.
Yep I only use high velocity ammo here on the farm so target ammo isn’t really my go to but I’ll consider doing another review 👍
My CZ 22lr is brilliant. Any brand and type ammo. Consistency every shot. Love it
100 yards is where the rubber meets the road in my opinion. As a young boy I had a Remington bolt action 22LR and it shot 1 inch groups or less at 100 yards 90 percent of the time. For semi-auto both of these did good but I will continue to use my old bolt action because many of my shots for rabbit, ground hogs etc. can be 100 yards. I like CZ Rifles but prefer a wooden stock. The Ruger American stocks are just plain ugly.
All my rimfires shoot the Eley ammo well. I dont use HV any more though as the subs are plenty good enough for rabbits. I also use the Eley standard when at the range as it is relatively chep and very accurate but more importantly consistent in all my rimfires. I have also used the Eley standard for rabbit shooting and does the job just as good as anything else.
great comparison
CCI Velocitors in the CZ are bang on at 50m. I sighted in my Leupold 3-9x40 and shot 4/5 rounds through the same hole twice!
My favourite hunting round for my CZ 👍
Better accuracy than stingers in mine.
@@Greyzonecompliant - Stingers are junk, at best they are a 35 yard round, max.
I had in mind to buy a CZ but watching this video I am leaning towards the Ruger's precision and lower price 10-shot magazine. Thank you very much for sharing your experience, greetings from Uruguay
I also have both rifles, the CZ is more of a target set up, both shoot well and are quality products.
I haven't shot either of these rifles but I've owned a RPR .22LR since they came out in 2018 "best 5 shot group a few weeks ago at 50m .228 using CCI standard"" and the boss has a Cogswell & Harrison 455 Certus "a CZ made in Ireland because you can't import rifles into Great Britain" and that is - MOA firearm everyday I like them both cheers, p.s, I paid less for the RPR than she did for the C&H CZ.
I own a Ruger American Rimfire in 22LR and 17hmr and love them both so much I don’t even need to think about trying other brands as they just work so well for my needs. 👌
Would’ve been good to see some subsonic rounds through these two and their respective groupings
Yup I might do another video but I used the high velocity ammo that both rifles like as my purpose is farm work not target use here
I have 5 CZs, they all out shoot my ruger. All do 5/8" at 50yrds, 1 1/4 at 100. I definitely prefer the higher quality built CZ.
Both will more than adequately do the job they're intended for. Here in the UK CZ is very popular. They are plentiful as are spares and upgrade parts. Ruger rimfires are available but not in the quantities CZ's are. I have a CZ 455 and a 457 and they shoot their favourite ammo superbly.
Hi I have just recently purchased a CZ457 synthetic. 22LR. What ammo do you find best for target and for small game. Im using CCI hp subs at the moment, which i find are quite good. Cheers
I just bought my first cz 457. The stock trigger is so clean and crisp.
Hey , good stuff Mr ozzy . Always interesting to watch here from canada eh . Definitely like the head to head comparisons , maybe some 308's in the pipeline ? Cheers .
Sure, plenty of comparisons to be had, it's just that I own these so it was easy to do...
I love the cz .22 just fits in the hands so nice and groups are so consistent all the time 👍👍
Nice video.. It is always a difficult choice when choosing a new weapon. I ended up choosing a cz457 and I have no regrets. Thanks for your videos.
The CZ was more consistent at both 50 and 100 hundred yards. The CZ averaged .66 at 50 and the Ruger .72. At 100 yards the CZ averaged 1.475 and the Ruger 1.7. Both did well.
I love my CZ 22mag and 17HMR. Both are very accurate but I was very impressed with the Ruger and think the high capacity mags are much better than the CZ options.
I own 2 Ruger Americans. The 17hmr and the 22 magnum. For the money they are excellent. I did consider the CZ, but the Ruger brand name and value drew me in. Mine don’t get babied. They have shot a lot of rabbits and the odd fox with both. I think the CZ in a wood stock is a much better looking rifle. I also like the switch barrel feature of the CZ (especially here in Western Australia with the uncertainty around proposed changes to our gun laws). Having said that, if our laws don’t change, I will happily keep my Rugers. Like Ozzie said, you cant go wrong with either. I also have a CZ Farmer in 22lr. Being an older rifle it has the longer bolt throw, so it means you need to run higher scope rings or the bolt hits the scope. Other than that, I love the CZ.
I have Ruger American 22LR wood stock last 6 years and all what I have to say is excelent riffle, especialy for price range. Btw Eley HV ammo is my favorite for rabbiting, precise and reliable expansion, perfect for small game hunting. One other thing about 22LR, whatever ammo or riffle you chose to use this is small, slow and not so aerodynamic projectile, so at 100m even light wind will push your round. On my rabbiting adventures I was learn to watch vegetation movement and compesate wind interferance. But no matter how good you are when you use 22LR for small game hunting keep your shoting distance under 100 m.
Good advice 👍
Great review, I haven’t had the pleasure of using the Ruger yet so I have that to look forward too, however I love my CZ 452 as it is both lovely to shoot and is an absolute tack driver with the right ammo. I have tried them all but my CZ loves CCI with super tight groups but on the other hand it hates Federal which sprays all over the place.
Thank for the review Ozzie. My Lithgow has cracked 3 magazine so the ruger will be my next choice
Lithgow is a great rifle but a tad heavy compared to CZ or Ruger, so for general hiking I prefer a lighter rifle
Just watched so a little late on this..I've owned CZ 457 Walnut stock (2-7X32 Vortex) for over a year now and it shoots exactly as you have shown there. But that Ruger is really nice and I'm going to push my son to pick up one as he's now looking for a good rimfire to try and outshoot dad at the range, thanks for the video, cheers!
I just got the Ruger a couple months ago. Not sure if my 22" Ruger American Rimfire would've been any different with the results but even with the 18" barrel, your results were impressive. I initially thought shooting some basic 40 gr LRN from Federal would get the same results as 40 gr LRN Remington Thunderbolt but the groupings were different for both. Being new to shooting scoped rifles, I'm definitely finding out not all ammo is the same even if the ammo weight is the same. I was looking at a CZ rifle as well but already having a Ruger 10/22 and lots of the 10 rd rotary mags, I went with the Ruger to simplify my magazine stockpile plus I already own a few other Ruger firearms and I like their affordability and reliability. As for glass, I went with a Burris Droptine Rimfire 3-9x40 which I have zeroed pretty well at 50 yds. I haven't even fired it at 100 yds yet but maybe on my next trip to the outdoor range I'm a member at. Thanks for the review.
No problem and thanks for the informative comment too 👍
Try the Agula super extra box ammo. my guns with the 18ish inch barrels like the 36g the guns with the 22inch barrels like the 40g.
@@reohorse42 Thanks. I've honestly never tried that ammo before but next time I buy ammo, I'll give it a try.
Actually, I'm actually looking at all relaitive options. The CZ is at the top of the list...thanks for your input and content..
Glad to help
you should do a review on the browning T-bolt it's a really cool straight pull .22 that no one talks about
I'm more and more becoming team ruger, price and build quality you can't beat em
Nice video, thanks a lot.
Just my observation, though: at 50yards the CZ averaged 0.66" and the Ruger American 0.72". That doesn't resonate with your conclusion that the Ruger performed better than the CZ at 50 yards.
I also did the same observation my freind - so the CZ must be the winner here - and I did just by one 😇
I have own both the ruger american and cz rimfire rifle. Both great rifles. I do think that the cz 452 rifles out shoot the later models tho. Al i have done with them is added a Gunbloke trigger spring $15 here Oz and polished up the sear. Keep your reviews coming mate.
fantastic review! I just got a 5-25 scope on my RAR, and found it can reproducibly get to1-1.5 at 100 yd when there is no wind---- this is extremely important. I think high power zoom scope will help
I had the exact same Ruger however it was green with stock trigger. The bolt was so stiff to close my son hurt his hand. I traded it in on a new CZ Jaguar, it’s alot smoother & more enjoyable to shoot. Even after extra overpriced magazines
I was trying to decide which one of these to get as I have just past down my .22 to my son as it's a family heirloom that was his great grandfather's. He has just got his licence so cleaning out my locker and renewing my collection. This video has made up my mind to go with the Ruger. Been eyeing off the Go Wild version. Looks like a visit the the gun shop is on the cards.
If you’re passing down a heirloom, then I highly suggest you get a CZ in a nice Walnut stock.
Way nicer than a composite / polymer one.
@@dmc3199 - Agreed.
I was just looking at this same CZ 457 model since it's 150 to 200 USD cheaper than the CZ 457 suppressor ready model with the 16.5 inch heavy barrel.
I would be interested in seeing the Ruger American Rimfire Long-Range Target. I have been considering buying one but haven't seen many videos...
Try the same comparison with CCI velocitors. My Ruger loves them ad I regularly shoot 50cent piece between 75m and 100m. Yes cross wind is a consideration but he’ll they still hit hard at that those distances.
Both are excellent rifles, you can't go wrong. If I had to choose, the Ruger rotary mag is the winner.
Nicely done! I have both rifles, and my RAR is very close in accuracy to my CZ.
4th time I've subscribed 🤦♂️ bloody CZcams 🤬.
I've only ever shot my Cz in 457 in 22wmr bloody love it - I've got it zero at 70 yards 👌
Yep the threat is real from them, they want to control what your watch and stop people like me from making videos
Good job top Stuff 👍👍👍
Going on the worst group measurements, the CZ won hands down because the Ruger had the worst group size. Accuracy should be gauged on the worst group because in real terms, that's what the rifle is capable of when you're trying to hit a distant target. As always, great video but WTF, where's the rest of the ammo?
I also own both but I prefer the CZ because Ive gotten better accuracy, more consistent results, and the action is much smoother than the American
But then again I only paid half as much for my American as I did for the CZ and the American can definitely do the job just fine as well, it punches above its weight. I wouldnt take my CZ hunting because its too nice for that, but the American with its polymer stock is much more a "beater" rifle for me
Yep definitely it’s why I got my RAR originally as it takes the knocks here on the farm but now CZ do the synthetic I jumped on one too 🤠
Ozzie love your review’s mate, have you ever considered doing a review on the Mauser M12 Impact ?
Sure if I can get a hold of one
Awesome thumbnail mate!
@@glennllewellyn7369Same brother 👍
I've got a cz and the American in Lr as well, the only bonus of my cz is the lovely wooden stock and its less fussy in ammo for accuracy. With the yellow SK's my ruger is every bit as accurate as the cz though.
Yeah that CZ Woden stock is gorgeous. I went in to buy a Ruger but left with the CZ once I held it. A standard velocity ammo test would be great.
I’ve owned a Ruger American Rimfire for a while now, at 50yds with standard velocity CCI it’s well within half an inch consistently. The CZ457 will usually blow it out of the water especially when you find the perfect ammo it likes best but for half the price you get about 3/4 of the performance with the Ruger with a much more rugged design in my opinion. The 10/22 and rhe American Rimfire are both very enjoyable but also very utilitarian guns and feel super solid in the hand, can’t beat those mags too.
RAR' have always been a slick rifle for the money. Love em.
I got my first one when we were on parity with the US$ so it was an absolute bargain and has never missed a beat
Eley in 22lr pretty fly from all guns:) all variants, now I use eley sport, nice results. Have Ruger 22lr compact.
Perfect timing. Looking at these currently as a first rifle for my girlfriend.
Definitely go with the CZ 457 it's just a better option all around.
My advice would be let her put both up to her shoulder in the gun shop and make a decision from what she feels most comfortable with 👍
@@ozziereviews Cheers mate, will do.
I don't have a cz...... yet. But I do have the ruger american rimfire 22lr. I found the walnut stock on eBay and wow she looks as good as she shoots. With the bsa sweet 22 3-9 scope I can hit the 20inch steal at 300yrds.
I'm useing 40gns AGUILA bulk ammo box. That ammo is surprisingly accurate for bulk ammo. About the same groups as your getting.
I have not shot either rifle, im still running a stirling M14. That was second hand in 96.
But as a ruger fan I'd go ruger and het the heavy barrel stainless wood. To go with my ranch rifles and M77MKII
I’ve got the same Ruger American.22lr with a Vortex 3-9x40
I’m about to put a Boyds stock on her
Also have the Ruger .22lr stainless target
Love my Rugers I have
6.5 Creedmoor Precision
6.5 Creedmoor GoWild
.22 Magnum GoWild
350 Legend GoWild
Great value & great shooters
Nice collection mate!
One of my favourite rifles is my Browning Hells Canyon in 6.8 Western 🤩
Excellent work sir. Im tempted to purchase a rugar American. I am still undecided. 😅
I prefer.... both. But here in South Africa it is a lengthy proses to get a license for a rifle.
Yes, some parts of the world butcher the name of Cee-Zet to Cee-Zee. 🙂
In the USA, the CZ-USA rilfe are considerably more than the Ruger American 22lr. Of course in both Rifle we are talking about a range of Rifles from modest to expensive. But for the money, the Ruger seems like a very good rifle for roughly US$370.
I would like to see the _Ruger Am 22 along side the Savage B22 or the Savage Mark-II._ The Savage are very reasonably priced models with the base model of the B22 being about US$300, and the base Models of the Mark-II being well SUB-$300.
Wonder if the shorter barrel on the Ruger had much to do with long range accuracy, I have 2 ruger 22 , long n short barrel, short barrel shoots 38gr federal real good at 50 yds, haven’t shot the longer barrel unit as of now, I like the short barreled Ruger so far, weather’s warming up I’ll get more range time soon, great video thanks for sharing !!
I run sbsonics threw my cz the groups are amazing
From watching youtube reviews, your RAR is the only accurate one I’ve seen. It is hard to find one doing better than an inch at 50
I’ve had a few and they all shot well once I found the ammo they liked, altho I wasn’t impressed with the Ruger precision rimfire in 22lr, my standard RAR shot a lot better 🤷🏼♂️
Both rifles awesome! I prefer a CZ 457! Very nice review!👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
Both very nice shooting rifles, playing with ammo selection you could get a really sweet little 22lr for the money.
Yup definitely, I pretty much only use high velocity ammo as that’s my use here on the farm, not so much target as such
Cz is just the superior product, no matter how you look at it. Ruger is very budget, and doesnt feel anything decent in the hands. Cz pleasant to hold, load and shoot. To me,the extra few hundred bucks, worth it with cz
I borrowed my friend's CZ 452 and although it reminded me a lot of my Savage Mark ii f, I gave it back to him exclaiming, That's a nice rifle! At camp, my friend shot my RAR 22" at 100 yards and exclaimed, That's a nice rifle!
Conclusion, they are both nice rifles. And the Savage is not too shabby either.
Like to see the same test with Standard velocity ammo
So far I have about 4 CZ rimfire rifles and only one RAR. I think I may buy another Ruger American but in the 16 inch barrel version to see how that performs for me.
I enjoyed this comparison Ozzie, thanks for taking the time and effort to show us both of these in comparison.
No problem mate glad you enjoyed watching it 👍
I have a RA 22 Magnum with the heavier stainless barrel and basic plastic stock, want a 22LR for subsonic rounds and cheap plinking. After watching reviews still swaying.
The LR stainless version of my rifle, go for the lever release CZ515 or just get a cheap secondhand Norinco.
So many options
Just waiting on a pta for a 22lr was tossing up between these 2. Looks like a win win whichever way I go, but the 25 mag for the ruger does give it an advantage for bunny buzzing . 🤙🏽
Yes the better mags do make shooting a little more fun 🤠
Cz has 25 rounders...
G’day Ozzie, thanks for this review. I’ve been using that ammo and getting some good groups from my Wierauch HW60J.
The two great centre groups at 50 yds - was that target closer to being level with the muzzle?
Curious.
No not at all…
I would have expected the CZ to come up on top
Actually the CZ shot better both times. In assessing groups shot one looks not only at the sggregate average, but the most commonly repeated group size. In each instance the most commonly repeated group size was smaller with the CZ.
Said by a guy who dies a lot of group shooting. Match ammo shoots better in both rifles, and said by a guy who has both you have here. Overall the CZ is about 40 percent more accurate.
Leaning towards the CZ, but that might be because its so similar to my Lithgow la101.
I have the Ruger with 22" barrel and and it shoots a bit better than the short barrel.
Even between rifles of the same model accuracy can differ. I just got the 457 combo with 22lr and 27hmr.
My Savage B22 FV-SR loves the Eley and also Winchester PowerPoint in 40gn.
Can you do a comparison between the Savage B22 FV-SR and the CZ?
Possibly
If you were on top of your math...the average of the groups at 50 and at 100 in each rifle, goes to the CZ. Closer at 50 yards (CZ wins) however definitely for the CZ at 100. One or two grps with a difference of .1 inch to the RGR is insignificant really. If you can flinch one out of the group...you can flinch one into the group also!! I have more than one CZ in .17hmr and more than one Rgr rifle in .17. I know how RGRs shoot. I have more than one Belgian made T-Bolt Browning rim fires in .22 rim and they all will shoot an inch or less (5 shots) at 100 with non match ammo. Don't dare compare these rifles to Anschutz .22 rim fires or you will throw away/sell those two CZ's and Rgrs. I have Anschutz also. To bad the Europeans have difficulty in our US market. You get what you pay for. I believe that the Europeans can make great quality rifles. The problem is that to many people in America will purchase a new 4X4 Dodge, Chevy or Ford truck for $80,000.00 plus, hardly put it in four wheel mode yearly and then settle for "Tupperware" stocked rifles that "spray' the target and think that they died and went to Heaven. Having said what I have, I like Ruger rifles however in other models. Change to a match/after market barrel and both CZ's and Rgrs will amazingly shoot much better. I have done this multiple times and they ALWAYS shoot...very much like an Anschutz, so there is hope for you.
Got the 457 but yet to get any good groups out of it!
Did you get a new camera? Footage looks bloody crystal clear that usual!
Try standard velocity SK ammo, my American loves the SK rifle match
Got a new camera only a couple of years ago, maybe just better lighting or focus 🤷🏼♂️
@chenderson4969 have tried that, tried about 20 or so different brands, weights etc but just can't it it to shoot well.
Against my advice my friend bought a Ruger American . When I went to have a shot with it, the fit and finish was so bad that I could hardly get the magazine to go into the Magazine Well.
Talk about cheap and nasty...
In all honestly you could buy a very nice second hand older Anshultz or Brno for only a little bit more than the new price of these two junk heaps...
No offense meant but math average shows the CZ CLEARLY beat the Ruger at both 100 AND 50 in this video. Aside from that, i have trouble understanding how any rifle could be more accurate at 100 than it is at 50..
Parabéns
Consider redoing the test with standard velocity ammunition please.
I can't find a higher capacity magazine for the Ruger American .308, I thought I bought one but it didn't fit. Return shipping was half the price of the cartridge!
I prefer the cz i think for long term reliabilty cz is the way to go. I have spoken to shooting contractors who have put through 10s of thousands rounds through cz and bryno rifles with out a failure. Don't know if Rugers can do the same
Ruger - know as Ruger & reliable
@@peterluttgens3364 yes but yet to be as proven as the good old cz or bryno, cz has been around longer.
Prefer the CZ. I use a 16 inch Synthetic for rabbits and range use ( suppressed ) Will happily group 2 inches at 150 yards when no wind. Takes foxes out to 75 easily. As a working tool it is rugged, should last me years. Not ammo fussy but best accuracy is with 40gn Norma/RWS subs. Or Hornady copper coat HP supers. Over two thousand through it now and no problems. Due to the bolt design can be dry fired without damage. Have tried the Ruger, stock felt cheap and nasty, bolt action not as smooth for me.
I have a cz 457 left handed and it shoots the best with subsonic ammo except for cci mini mags
Subed again 😉👍
Thank you mate 👍
