In the US, concepts like 'race' shouldn't even be in use anymore. We should be real with each other. The truth about "white" America, which for many is very generalized due to the way we just throw the term "white" around, is that it is historically very ethnically diverse. What is the point of the label "white" when people who look like Ana know they are ethnically Armenian, some people are knowingly ethnically Italian, many are individually unique ethnic mixes. My point is, why do we still centralize ancestry around this "white" identity (and other racial categories) instead of just having Americans who are American. If the topic of ancestry comes up, people can say they are of colonial ancestry in Virginia, or Irish and German, etc. "White" is a totally unnecessary vestige of US sociopolitical history.
The same way, "black" is an inaccurate label historically used for African Americans, but now it can cover all of "black" America which is becoming more ethnically diverse every year. African Americans developed in a way more akin to an ethnic group, not a "race" (though the circumstances were often racially motivated).
It may seems petty, but simplifying this US history is why we often have issues w/miscommunication. Confusion leads to questions I often hear such as, "If blacks can do X why can't whites?" These usually show a lack of context concerning how these identities developed. At the same time, some white Americans complain about being lumped together (for slavery, racism, etc.) but it's because people in this country are used to interpreting that history in a rigid racial way. For many people white is white. Unique familial stories are inaccurately reduced to a common 'racial' history.
We have a huge lack of proper context, and this allows people with divisive racial agendas an advantage by having control over the narrative of our history. It would be better if we decentralized the racial structure here, give the country's racial past proper context, fully appreciate the historically unique ethnic diversity of the country, and otherwise went on as common American people.

My aunt has been doing extensive genealogy research on our family for decades, including going abroad many times to meet with distant family members. Our recent DNA tests were right in line with her research. I am a complete mutt and related to some interesting people. I had relatives fighting on both sides of both World Wars, the Civil War, and the Revolutionary War.

I have to say, when I was 'tested', I was devastated that I *was* one of those 'purebred' white Europeans if there even is such a thing. As a Scottish person, I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised - we can be blue-white skinned in the winter cause we all 'celtic' up in our bodies - but my whole family was just crushed to know there was nothing else really in the results. I'm not a self-hater, so nothing against my own 'whiteness', but I think mixing DNA is a wonderful thing.

These tests are actually pretty inaccurate, you can find stories of these companies faking test results, or send in two samples by the same person and they’ll get different results.

I've been wondering: how do you find out you have Jewish heritage on a genetic level? Judaism is a religion, it has nothing to do with "race". Can we also test how much Christian or Hindu heritage somebody has?

I had my DNA tested. I'm indeed what I knew to be true (Italian, Irish, Slavic) but found out Anna and I share something- I am either Georgian or Armenian. DNA is grouped (so France and Germany appear the same and all Slavs are grouped).

I know for a fact that I am Swedish, Scottish and a little bit Irish. Yet I have had Portugese folks tell me I must be Portugese, because of my colouring and features. I lived in an area where the grocery was run by a Portugese family, and had mostly Portugese customers. The store owners always laughed when they would see me telling a lovely older Portugese person that I could not speak Portugese. The customers were always surprised. But you look Portugese! I've never understood why people are "proud" of their skin color. Isn't that like being "proud" of your nose shape? What's the difference? I know it has a lot to do with their background "culture", but that too is something that doesn't matter. What matters is what kind of person YOU are, not what kind of people you're from.
