Vodkarage Vodkarage I read an interesting Quora thread asking whites about what they thought was a disadvantage(s) for them. It was interesting because almost all of them mentioned how it is unfair that just because they are white, they are automatically considered privileged.
But, I don’t think it is understood why that is. Do all people matter? Absolutely. However, we live in a society that separates by phenotype and fair skin is what is favored. It is a messed up system but, literally being “white” gives you an advantage over me. No one will assume your ghetto, violent or stupid. I’ve had people be incredibly rude to me before I’ve even said one word. Then, when I speak they are suddenly nice as if it is a relief that I can properly articulate myself. I’ve introduced myself and have a white person say “Your name is Stephanie?? I thought you were going to say “Moesha”. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t blame all white people for this. My husband happens to be white. White privilege is not being judged first by your physical appearance and everything else later. You have a chance because you are considered favorable. I don’t want to be asked if my hair is real because it’s so unheard of for a black woman to have hair down her back...I don’t want to be asked if you can touch my hair. I don’t want to be reminded that I’m black and considered lesser than everyday. There’s always that *one* person. But , I digress. Anyway, I understand where you’re coming from, though. Separating ourselves not only harms minorities, it harms everyone involved.

Had an black American friend over this summer in Oslo. Wanted to show him the beautiful beach where I live. Took him there, but when he saw the gate, he said he'd rather not. I tried to tell him the gate was not a problem, that we were free to enter. He still didn't wanna go. When we passed it, he said he was scared the neighbors would call the cops. That would absolutely never have happened here, but that's the effect of living in a society that still suffers from widespread racism. You adjust your behavior in sad ways to avoid potential trouble.
(Yes, Norway has racism, but no one would call the cops because they saw a black man in a white neighborhood. And even if they had, the dispatch would have told them to stop wasting their time.)

It’s been an ugly wake up call for us, so I tend to be somewhat overprotective of her. She’ll tell me it’s no big deal, but I’ll say “No! It’s a huge deal!”, cause it’s not right.

The woman stipulated that there would an additional charge, which Suh agreed to pay. During the drive - which was plagued by snow and flash floods - Suh reached out again to confirm that her lodging arrangements were in order, but this time, she got an altogether different answer.
“Absolutely not,” the woman wrote back.
Suh asked why, and the host responded by accusing the 23-year-old of being “high” if she thought four guests could get a room for $50 per night on a busy weekend in Big Bear. The host also accused the renter of being a “con artist.”
When Suh argued that the woman was clearly backing out of a deal they had previously agreed to, the host replied with a racist comment.

Africans for example come into America on a daily basis for tourism, work (cheap labor), and education..They pay huge sums just to get visas.. Monies that eventually add to America's wealth. I'm a strict Conservative with some right-wing ideals, but this Airbnb "hostess" was being outlandish, melodramatic, and unprofessional. We are not in Europe's situation. We are not being tied down by immigration. Our president is preventing it from getting that bad. Most of the people living in America, right now, were born in America, or have had citizenship since they were children; having a different skin doesn't make them any less American. She should be fired, because she has a lack of self control, drunk or not. Ignore politics, for one second, and just think about this business. Airbnb is going to lose money because of this woman's foolish actions, and they're going to need to make those DISGUSTING budget cuts. I am ASHAMED of other Republicans for trying to twist facts, and justify this woman's sorry behavior; you're digging a grave for the rest of us. This is exactly why people think we're Nazis. Some of you are so quick to defend anyone who has similar motives, whether or not they are blatantly evil, and you know what? That IS a characteristic of Nazism. It is NEVER okay to talk to a customer like that, or mistreat them over political manners. I've watched every one of Trump's speeches, and he has never once said anything about Asians causing trouble in the states, because they aren't. Most of the Asians that are coming here, to America, are coming here for school and work. Most of them are highly intelligent and hard working people; a privilege to our economy. Let's not ruin our relations with the Asian people, like we have with our own veterans. Keep your political opinions to yourself, and just do your job.

I'm really glad that you disagree with what this host did and I agree that right wing does not mean racist. I also agree that there is a lot of the tribalism that you're talking about and I agree with your sentiment of denouncing that. It seems like you don't see Trump's culpability in situations like this and don't interpret his words or his laws as racist or inspiring racism. I hope this helps you to realize that most of the country does and so does the rest of the world. If you don't believe it, you shouldn't just watch his speeches, you should also look into which laws he works to pass that clearly show discrimination and some violate international human rights law. Even 21% of Republicans think he's racist. I personally think he doesn't mean to be racist, but he is and also very xenophobic, which isn't much better than racism. He's very old and comes from another time when it was ok to be racist. There is no doubt that he inspires others to be racist and xenophobic. I hope you think about that the next time you hear him speak. I encourage you to read more about what goes on in the WH. The free press is what is keeping us from turning into Nazi Germany or Communist Russia. Keep your government and friends accountable for their actions and continue to speak out against racism.

Listened to this story on XM radio, and TYT failed to mention some important facts. The reservation was originally for just her. She changed it last minute to include pets (which weren't allowed in that air bnb hosts house to begin with) and the addition of guests. The 'asian' in question decided to haggle at the last minute. A price was NOT set. The airbnb host had the right to deny the house to her because the lady wouldn't accept the new raised price. She would only accept a lower price, which the host had every right to turn down. Of course the Turks would never mention this because it destroys their race baiting narrative. Of course, air bnb capitulated for fear of being called a racist organization and fired the host.

Come on TYT, at least do a bit more research.
According to the screenshots, this asian woman had booked a room for 2 for 50 dollars a night on a very busy weekend. Then the day she was meant to arrive mentioned she was bringing 2 other people and 2 dogs. The owner then stated she must be high if she thought that she was going to get a room for 4 people and 2 dogs for 50 dollars a night on such a high demand weekend. Then the asian woman accuses the owner of backing out of the deal (even though she's the one who is trying to change their arrangement, which puts the owner in a justified position to decline the deal change). Then the owner gets mad because again, it's a high demand day and at the last minute they're essentially being bullied into taking a deal that's bad for them, or else losing out on income entirely, since it's likely too last minute to get replacements into the room. So the owner called the asian woman a con artist.
I don't know why they used the "one word: asian" comment, that at least does seem racist, but with context the owner's anger is reasonable (the woman did try to scam her) and her refusal of the deal change was justified (and not racially motivated).
I don't know how you missed that part of the story, or if you didn't, why you'd intentionally leave that out just to push your own agenda. What happened to you guys being less biased and more objective than MSM? Disappointing once again.

    • @Abyssionknight
      @Abyssionknight Před 7 lety +2

The only thing the owner did wrong was she made an inappropriate comment. Everything else that happened was the woman renting the room's fault. I mean, just try to book a hotel room for 1, then show up with 4 people and see if they let you into the room without asking you upgrade and/or pay more...they aren't going to let you get away with it, and this man is in the right to call that unreasonable.
What I'm upset with, and what others are upset with too, is that TYT changed the narrative. They left out facts, and turned it from 'girl tries to scam guy, he gets angry and says something racist' to 'Racist owner denies woman a room, because she's racist!'. I don't understand how you can't comprehend why that's completely devoid of journalistic integrity and unethical.

This isn't going to change a thing, except maybe making it worse as the racist in the story will become more racist.
Why are you cheering the state? Do you really think a state is going to wipe out racism? Some people are racist. Some are sexist. No college course is going to change that. She should have been told she's done making money by renting her home to tourists and that's it. Everything else is window dressing that is about as meaningless as telling someone that drove drunk to attend AA. First - the person may not be an alcoholic. Second, if the person doesn't want to stop drinking, AA will do absolutely nothing.
People are allowed to not like each other. They aren't allowed to discriminate. Forcing a college course? Yeah, Yeah California for once again being a nanny state and thinking we're all in preschool.

The coverage of this story is so disingenuous. The dispute had nothing to do with race. And during your coverage of the horribleness of the AirBnB owner all three of you made horrible stereotype references. “Hoss”, “...they were drunk...”, etc. And the black host says she doesn’t use AirBnB because she doesn’t want to be discriminated against? Seriously?! Stop. Just stop. Enough already of this racism/racist train. I’m not saying there isn’t racism, but by covering this story in this manner you are diminishing real and harmful racism.
The ironic part of this entire segment is the fact that Ana attributes being refused a particular reservation request to racism because of her last name. She obviously didn’t think much of it at the time because she didn’t say she filed anything with AirBnB. She simply clicked onto another one and tried again. And also, Cenk made the observation that there was no way to know for sure she was denied because of racism, Ana was just speculating.
The truth of the matter is that Dyne Suh reservation was for 2 people and no dogs. When she was 10 minutes (per her video) away from the property she notified the property owner that there would be 4 people and 2 dogs and was told no by the property owner. The “Asian” comment was made in regards to the stereotype that Asians bargain constantly.
I am not condoning the property owner’s comment but I can understand the sheer frustration in the moment. Essentially Ms. Suh was trying to place the business owner in an untenable position. In this case the property owner chose to take the loss instead of being told how much they would charge for their service to Ms. Suh. Additionally, the consequences to the property owner were not for denying Ms. Suh access to the property, it was specifically for the text. Had the property owner not sent that text they would have had no repercussions.
TYT please stop reporting stupid stuff like this, it is akin to crying wolf and when it really counts I won’t know to take it seriously.

Airbnb does discriminate. Both my husband and I have Airbnb accounts. When I try to book in declined. When my husband books he’s accepted. He’s white, I’m a woman of color.

for those who say that they never believed that someone would be so racist against Asians, let me remind you that Arabs are Asians, also Iraqies, Iranians, Pakistanies. They all just belong to different Asian ethnicities, but they are all Asian. Falsely in spoken english Asian means Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. which is a totally wrong usage of the term in any language(well it's only English that it's used like that).
And you freak out when a Chinese/Japanese had a racist reaction, but not when you inflict the same and even worse on other Asians, like middle eastern citizens. That is to say the least hypocrisy.
(I'm not a middle eastern or muslim).

I'm glad the Airbnb owner has to do all those things, except for the apology. A forced apology is worthless. The act of simply saying, "I'm sorry", especially, when the receiver of the apology knows it's a forced apology, means nothing. It's only when the guilty party truly _feels_ sorry for their actions, that it means something. Maybe if the apology is the last thing on the list, with the course in Asian American studies completed, and after participating in a community education panel, the guilty party may feel enough remorse to make it a sincere apology.

This is why Identity Politic should be stopped. Once you accepted as American Citizen, you're American. We should begin to identify ourself as American, not Korean-American, Mexican-American, French-American, Russian-American, African-American, and many other "Identity" we have that separate us into squares of identity.

That Airbnb host is ignorant and stupid. When you're doing a business, the only thing you can discriminate is the "Dollar" ! IF You don't have money to pay for the service .. then .. You're not allowed to receive/get the service. Other than that .. You cannot just discriminate someone based on race, nationality, gender, etc.

In the USA when black and Asian people are discriminated against there's no shortage of lawyers willing to take their cases. In Canada when an indigenous person faces discrimination lawyers turn their backs on us. We get blamed and told we had to have done something to provoke the other person.

She's an ESL teacher, a lot of them view Asians as less than human and like to condescendingly teach them English. She's used to Asians being submissive and eager to learn from her, so when an Asian female contradicts her notion of Asians being weak and powerless in a foreign country - of course racists like her are going to be mad as heck! The university that's continuing to employ racists like her are a great example of those who condone and turn a blind eye to racist and atrocious behaviour from teachers to their own students. Unfortunately for the students, English being their second language, they simply take the abuse - and the more they do, the more entitled this woman becomes to the point of outwardly expressing obnoxious racist behaviour without any repercussions. However, this entitled behaviour got the better of her as she behaved in her usual racist way to a highly educated asian female law student who was horrified and deeply upset at the complete injustice and abuse she had just experienced with this woman - whose racism was allowed to fester by the abuse she already bestows on the university foreign students she teaches.

Wanting to protect your borders from illegal immigration and tighten travel rules in attempt to lessen the terrorist threat, however misguided, does not equate to approving of discrimination of American citizens who happen to be minorities.
