15.- Those days were hectic; I loved all that activity. From the iron stove, with firewood, came out jams, fruit preserves in syrup (I especially remember the fig preserves; I have never had anything tastier again), tomato sauce, quince jam..., and later, in his time , salty pork, hams, sausage…. Blessed self-sufficiency! Today I wonder how we have been able to accommodate ourselves so much to the presumed advantages of processed food and technology, how we have been able to forget the essence of all that: the heat of the kitchen, all those aromas enveloping the house, the pleasure of preserving and repeating what learned for so many generations.
Of all that, I was only able to keep a quince tree; I kept making quince jelly (already at home) until a few years ago. One day I got there, and in the place of the tree there was a gigantic sinkhole: the construction of the high-speed train took what was left of those years.
Living. I have never eaten quince anything. Just looked up to see if our local grocery stores have the jam or jelly. I could have some shipped, but not local.
What is the taste like? More apple, more pear or citrus?
The video I last put up was about canning peppers, making jams, jellies, etc.
Jalapeno Jam is yummy. (Get the heat w/the sweet) Nothing better than it on a cracker w/a slab of cream cheese.
BUT my favorite jam to make is tomato preserves. Ever tried it? SO GOOD. It comes together as a citrusy-tomato flavor and tastes great on a piece of toast.
I didn't do as much canning this year, I didn't plant as much, but I did get fig preserves put up. I have two fig trees and they produced great this year.
And, peach, pear and apple jelly, apple sauce, stuff like that.
I tell ya, looks like we're coming to a time in society that those lost arts of self-sufficiency will once again be needed and all the ppl living off of processed foods are going to find out just how wonderful a feeling it is to do it all yourself.

@@StorytimeWithLana I have seen your video! I loved seeing all your preserves, and your "incident" with the spicy reminded me of everything we cried chopping onions! XD. The quince only serves to make sweet, but it is exquisite when it is prepared. Don't buy, plant a tree. It will take a while to give you fruit but you will have it at home. I'll teach you how to make the quince jelly, if you want (it's tedious, but simple). I don't think it's like anything, apart from the sweet taste of sugar, because it has a special acid point, and it's great to eat (for example) with fresh cheese. And it keeps well for a long time! There, at that time, we did the things that were "operative": the lemons were wrapped in newspaper so they wouldn't spoil, and even the peel was used; we used apple pips as a thickener for jams, potatoes were spread on top of the granary to keep them lasting, tomatoes were packed whole and skinless... Yes, I think it is a sin that all those things that served for survival (not so long ago) are lost. We are there to avoid it! These, and many others that will come when I play my great-aunt's part!

I also find that modernism is good but that we went too (much too) fast!!! always more, always better! better than what??? we realize that what we finally lost had an exceptional quality. Fortunately, all is not lost if you really want it...
@@eveline5858 there are things that have been lost. Things we didn't want to learn when there was still someone who wanted to teach them. We don't listen enough, we don't have enough time, nor enough will to find it.
There are so many survival skills and crafts that have been lost. I do feel for that. I tried to teach my children some things that I was afraid would be lost, but I myself have so much that I would like to know how to do. Things that I was never taught.
One cool thing is that we have access to people and information that those before us could not even imagine. I can learn about how the Japanese, Chinese, Africans etc have done pottery and learn from that cumulative experience in a way we have never been able to before. But, as we all know. Knowledge doesn’t translate to skill without practice and a lot of it most times.
So yes, there is a loss and there is a gain.
Necessity is the driver and without the need to learn and do those things the majority of people are content to have the big corporations provide for them. Maybe it isn’t just a contentment but a lack of anyone to teach.
I find it interesting particularly when it comes to raising children. That girls would have seen women around them b***st feeding their children and caring for them. Now, we have to be taught even that most basic and necessary human need. What are we doing here???? We have lost the most I think from a lack of a “tribe”.
I would love to talk to and learn from the Native American’s about medicinal plants and some of those skills that we are losing/have lost.
Quince 😂 My daughter loves Bonsai trees and just now got a quince bonsai. It has 5 tiny tiny fruits. Maybe enough to make jam for a gnome. 😊
The way their voices blend so flawlessly is probably because they've trained pretty hard at singing in just intonation with each other. Voices, being infinitely variable and needing no tuning, can make mathematically perfect intervals. All other instruments have to choose between perfect intervals but only in one key, or fudging things just a little bit so that all keys sound equally good, but also not _quite_ perfect.
I love this beautiful Pentatonix video. It's perfect. Kevin made his cello sing so we still had 5 performing in this song. The Trio is always amazing.

I always thought this was a really classy thing to do. To do a song without Avi as a way to say goodbye acknowledge that the band will move on. Avi had to leave, it was best for him. But PTX was scared and sad to see him go. It all worked out, but that’s hard to see when you’re in the thick of it

What a version! I love to hear that cello: this song needs the wail of a cello. If I were in that corner I think my heart would have that sound. These guys have the ability to take any song and transform it into pure feeling. Those voices are translators of sensations.

I feel what I hear, I translate it into words in Spanish, and then I search (I search and search and search) for the words in English that are useful for what I want to express. You are great! Huskies have a high prey instinct, and I often found dead critters in the backyard. I couldn't deal with that... thankfully a call to my neighbor and he'd take care of it. I even saw her swallow a newborn bunny once. 😧

They made one other music video during this interim period, a favorite Christmas carol, usually sung by and for children, "Away in the Manger." PLEASE consider reviewing it because it's SO amazing! They took a trite, boring, over exposed song, invented a new bridge, gave it an interesting setting in the woods, and the result is wonderful, in spite of missing Avi. I keep hoping they record it again now that they have Matt, but so far, no. (The setting is very similar to one of Avi's first songs as a solo artist, which is why there's a bathtub and other odd household goods, seemingly out of place in the woods.
I so enjoy your reactions. Your channel is one of the very few I request notification for when your new reviews are posted. At this point in my life I listen (almost) exclusively to Penetonix so I especially enjoy those reactions. But I so listen to the others too.

Kevin calls it "celloboxing," and he invented it. It was his CZcams videos of celloboxing that first brought him to the attention of the trio and Avi, back when they were looking for a fifth member.
Does Kevin get all the credit he deserves? I can only answer that with another question. Is it *possible* for Kevin to get all the credit he deserves? He plays both cello and saxophone, has a beautiful voice, is probably the best beatboxer in the world, speaks five languages including Mandarin, and graduated from Yale pre-med. You got that right - he's a genius who was well on his way to becoming a doctor when he gave that up to join a bunch of teenagers with a dream of going to Los Angeles and getting a recording contract.
But, even when he'd graduated from Yale pre-med, he was putting out celloboxing videos, so maybe going to Los Angeles and getting a recording contract was *his* secret dream as well. If so, the time and hard work have certainly paid off for him; he has three Grammys to show for it, after all, and next year he will share in the new Pentatonix star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. But most importantly, he is beloved.
I think Adam from Home Free is a better beatboxer (and he can also sing). But Kevin is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, and doesn't get the credit he deserves.
@@super_siri I haven't seen enough Home Free to argue it. I just discovered Pentatonix and the other modern a cappella groups about 2 months ago, and I've mostly been concentrated on Pentatonix. I'll eventually get to all of them, but there's just so *much* from PTX to go through! (That *isn't* a complaint, BTW.)
From what I’ve hear from Home Free, they are all astonishingly good. I’m just more drawn to PTX. However, I would like to point out Kevin can also sing and he has gotten better at it during his time in Pentatonix. He has a really lovely tenor voice that is most often used in Christmas and religious songs. I think A Little Space from their original album Lucky Ones is the only time he has sung during a verse. It’s probably because in pop and R’n’B type songs they need him to create the beat if they want to also do that song live.
Interim performance - Avi gone, Matt yet to come. But typical Pentatonix skill & excellence.
Just FYI, Avi left SIX years ago.
I think it's interesting to compare this version to the original (by Robyn, which is a dance track, and some people think it's related to her track Call Your Girlfriend). To me, having already known the original when I listened to the PTX version the first time, it was very obvious that this version was specifically created for this time of Avi leaving.

I was not familiar with this song. QTX (Quadratonix 😁 + cello) did a great job. The lyrics remind me of ABBA - The Winner Takes It All, “But tell me, does she kiss like I used to kiss you?” Etc.
Scott emoted so well you could feel the ache of the unrequited love. Kevin’s cello boxing, awesome! Beautiful, beautiful cello. Kevin is able to express emotion through it. Of course Mitch and Kirstin did a beautiful job as well.

Thanks for bringing to my attention the “ABBA sound” and the “Pentatonix sound”. It is like the difference in the sound of different instruments even though they are playing the same note. The sound is quite different.

@@AnneMajdosz Hi Anne! So good to hear from you. So sweet of you chat with me. I realized that I didn’t respond to a comment you left a while back. I also used to spend a lot of time in the woods. I am so glad I could remind you of your “church”. I feel exactly the same. It is a sanctuary. I wish more people would have access to natural areas. The school I am at has 16 acres of wooded areas and I love to take the students out exploring. There is no judgement in the woods and you can be completely yourself. I love the Navajo prayer “Walking in Beauty” or “The Beauty Way” about walking in nature and life in general.
The story about your dog is soooo cool. How great is that. It sounds like you both needed each other. How sweet. Wow, Sierra live a long time. we had boxers and they only lived to around 9. And man, it is so hard to lose them. I keep thinking about getting another dog but it hasn’t happened yet.

A fitting goodbye to Avi….I cannot imagine what they went through during this time? You think all the way back to the “Sing Off” when they were so young and just starting, all they went through together, Kevin and Avi were roommates….you cannot say enough about how hard this must have been? 😞
Eyes forward, it is good to look back and remember but it is not good to linger there….

Heck to the yes we had a freeze 🥶, it has warmed up outside today but it is one of those things that it is much more cold in the house than it is outside? I have been complaining about it on here (in a different comment thread) and I do realize how annoying that is since I have done nothing but complain about the heat for months now? I still prefer this to the heat though and I am ready to move somewhere away from the heat and the monotonous days of it during the summer? And hopefully someplace that has more rain 🌧? We still have fire bans everywhere? Over it but still freezing. 🥶 😂
This weather change does make me feel sluggish though? Which I cannot stand but also don’t fight it either? Things will regulate as soon as we decide on a temp zone and stick to it. The up and down of it I think is what makes me feel this way? 🤷🏼♀️

This is only 1 of 2 songs they did as a 4 piece, after Avi left the group, so I think it makes everyone a little sad. Finding Matt was meant to be and he does a wonderful job, groups go through changes as they grow. PTX handled this shift really well.
I love PTX. There isn't a bad song they've put out. The very best cover of this song is by Calum Scott on Britain's Got Talent. Check it out. I know you will love it
It is a sad song anyway but I'm sure they were blue about only being a four member group...missing Avi. I noticed they were on a smaller couch than usual so there wasn't an empty spot.

I am assuming that there was a bit of time between when Avi left the group and they found Matt. And they choose to use the cello as a full in bass.
They found Matt pretty quickly, they used him in the Christmas special they did that year right after Avi left, but he hadn't officially joined the group yet.
They started looking for a replacement before Avi left (they finished the tour they were on, which sounds like the professional thing to do). That is why the gap is fairly short. Avi officially left in September 2017 and Matt joined in time for the Christmas gigs, but became an official member early next year.
I think I had a gap where I hadn’t listened to PTX for a couple of years (I have no idea why), because when I saw Attention, I went ”wait, that’s a different guy from before”.
Why does it make you sad? *Look* at them! *They're* sad. At one point Kevin appears to be on the verge of tears.
You're used to Pentatonix having fun while they sing, and this song was not fun for them - they're saying "Goodbye" to Avi. The cello is playing Avi's part, because Avi couldn't be there to do it himself. How could that not be sad?
The cello is "singing" the part Avi would have sung if he'd still been there. 😢

By now you have probably seen that this was a goodbye song to their bass. The cello WAS the bass.
They have several songs where they use the cello, sometimes violin, and once a piano. They never hide the fact that it is there.

It’s a matter of opinion and no need to insult this person (even though they have a bad taste). Anyway, to thise who can bear to sometimes hear them with instruments, I recommend their collaborations with the dancing violin player Lindsay Stirling.
