New search for Jay Slater underway in Tenerife | BBC News

- A new search is under way in Tenerife for missing British teenager Jay Slater following calls from Spanish police for volunteer help.
On Friday the Guardia Civil asked voluntary organisations and members of the public with expertise in difficult conditions to come to northern Tenerife.
Dozens of experienced local firefighters, police and mountain rangers are leading the search.
Authorities had hoped the operation would be a “massive search” but less than 12 members of the public had arrived at the meeting point before it began.
The 19-year-old has not been heard from since the morning of 17 June, after he told a friend he was lost in the mountains and had 1% battery on his phone.

My daughter lives in Spain, where she runs her own successful business. She has told me how angry the Spanish people are because of the constant insulting comments on their Police and search teams, made by the young man's family and friends. That might well account for the lack of volunteers.
The Spanish people know all about his crimes and how he spent his time in Tenerife. I don't blame them, as I found their statements extremely insulting and a kick in the teeth to those who are working so hard. Perhaps some of the Go-fund-me money should be donated to an appropriate Spanish charity, instead of paying for accommodation & food for the friends brought over for a free holiday
Yeah the Spanish need to get a grip and imagine how the family feels... pos.
Just as the UK doesn't want people coming in from certain countries unless they can prove clean records and good intentions, Spain should stop British people coming in without the same checks we want here.
The truly sad part of it all is the damage done to rescue service. They've been there everyday, working in difficult condition's, not only searching for "a missing person" but trying to stop "volunteer's" removing/damaging evidence & stopping anyone else from being injured or worse during the search.
Also next time a "tourist" gets lost or has an accident up there, there won't be the personnel or fund's to search for them...makes me so angry😡😡😡👎

I can’t understand why the mother hasn’t gone out on any of these searches, even in the beginning when he could still have been alive. If it were my son I’d be out there day and night until I was sure he was not there.
And why spend the money on flying people over, surely it makes more sense to buy hiking gear, drones, night vision goggles, hire more people to search, hire private detectives, put up a reward for information or to find him dead or alive.

if there is no evidence that he’s been there, why keep on searching further into land? i don’t get it… The police need to call the two last men that were with Jay and question them thoroughly. Also, look into the video of the church area, he was robbed there… and most likely convinced to go with them to their airbnb… seems more plausible to me…

It’s extremely concerning that the search has been called off. I can’t imagine what Jay’s family are going through. I promise to never go on holiday to Spain or the Canary Islands ever again and will ensure my children never do either. I will not contribute my hard earned cash to their economy. I imagine that Tenerife relies heavily on tourism, therefore the safety of tourists and displaying their concern for them should be paramount as the world is watching this tragedy unfold. The actions, refusal of Uk police help and lack of actions speaks volumes to me.

Is it just me that doesn't think this is all that fishy? The lad has been on a bender, then he's gone off with a couple of strangers - who have no responsibility or care for his safety - probably after a promise of drugs, then in a disorientated inebriated state he has thought better of waiting for a bus and walked off into the mountains thinking it's not so far to go, got lost, dehydrated, and, much like Michael Mosley, sadly died of heat exhaustion, or maybe fallen and become incapaciated. It's an unforgiving terrain and young lads think they are invincible. I don't think anyone has kidnapped him or murdered him, I could be wrong but imo the simplest explanation is often correct: it's a series of poor decisions that led to his untimely demise. Many other lads probably get away with this kind of thing and it's a funny story, but sometimes it ends badly.

He thought he would double his cash . So he had cash or pills met some people. there are loads of different gangs from the UK and morroco and albania and holland in every place ive lived , he got robbed they thought this is easy we will take that thank you sucker . It's bizarre how his friends left out telling the authorities vital information, such as the friend who only recently claimed he heard the guy slipping down rocks before going silent. It's been 12 days and that area is very dry. It's not in someone's living room, it's outside in a dry climate. Bodies dry up quickly in those conditions and get eaten up by wildlife.

With all due respect to this lads parents and family, I will be brutally honest and say that I really don’t think he is still ALIVE given the fact that he’s been out in this kind of hostile terrain for almost 2 weeks! If indeed he did try to make his way back to his hotel after going back to a strangers home? But something really doesn’t add up about the whole thing 🧐 if this is your first holiday away at 19 yrs old with your mates, why would you just agree to go back to a strangers apartment (after a rave) rather than go bk to your paid accommodation with your mates???
