Note the flaps on the rotor blades. Unlike most helicopters the K-Max has fixed non rotating blade grips and the blades change angle of attack by twisting along their lenght by means the the flaps. Because of this it does not need a hydraulics system the controls are stick and cable connected to the swashplate and 1/4" push-pull rods inside the blades connected to the flaps. Aerodynamics rather than powered hydraulics provide the power assist to move the collective and cyclic of the rotor system.
Everything about this helicopter was designed solely for lifting sling loads, it even has a secondary instrument panel on a blister under the bubble side window so the pilot can look at the load and keep an eye on the instruments.
It's a super simple machine built to do a specific job, Kaman calls it a "flying pickup truck".
That’s so rad. What a fantastic job to have. The Kaman is an amazing piece of equipment. I was navy for years and my favorite was the seasprite. This is my new favorite. I do understand the K max has some unique pitching moment/lift idiosyncrasies when operating it but nothing that is considered a negative.

On loads like this vertical and horizontal fins should be mounted at the rear of the payload to keep it flying in one direction and not allowing it to spin.
Raptor - I'm not an expert in aviation, but I was about to post a comment as yours. That was on the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that payload spinning. I wish I could have a chance to see this idea tested.
When the Air Force recovers target drones they attach a small parachute to the tail so that the drone stays pointed into the wind.
....why the so called "experienced crew'" didn't set that second load with a drogue and HI line to stabilize it in flight escapes me !!

Reality TV TRIPE... IF you are unable to factor in a variety of scenarios running into problems.. (And especially fuel management). Just don't fly a helicopter. Crash and burn with this attitude, and I wil never feel bad for anyone, except family and neighbors..
