Wondered why Church Security Fails? I've worked with churches for over a decade there are 7 reasons why churches fail at safety and security. In this video i tell you what they are what i've found works to combat them. #churchsecurity #churchsafety
00:00 Introduction
00:30 1. A belief that security is not blibical
01:09 2. There is a denial of danger
02:31 3. There is no security culture
03:23 4. Lack of support for security leadership
04:05 5. People are overwhelmed and stressed
04:57 6. Leaders not creating the impact that they want
05:54 7. Security programs receive little or no budget

We would love to hear your comments which on which of the seven reasons do you see at your church? 👏🏾
I live in a place where the right to bear arms is recognized. Our church on a Sunday has more guns than you’ll see on a gun range, even if you don’t visibly see them at the church
Same here, my church would be the wrong one to come and try to shoot up.😂
Having a firearm and being able to use it efficiently, effectively and safely are two entirely different things. It takes training. In my opinion the security team needs to train as a group at least 1 day every month and firearms qualification should be required every 6 mos. De-escalation techniques, pressure point control tactics, observation skills, proper use of pepper spray and expandable baton training should be included in their training. Without training all you have is a bunch of warm bodies carrying pistols. Warm bodies = law suits. Law suits can sink a congregation.
You nailed them Simon. These 7 items are probably 70% of the frustration we face as church security leaders.
Can you believe that listed started with 3/4? And grew to 7! Thanks for watching Frank.
Another reason ministries suffer and fail is the lack of consistency from the volunteers. Ends up saddling the few who are truly committed with the burden of the entire ministry, resulting in their burnout.
This is a great one, so we now have 8 reasons it fails 😂 Simon
My late grandfather was a pastor of a small church. Since he was the one facing the entrance to the sanctuary, he always had a gun on himself and trained a lot.
No matter the role within the church. For strong layers of security all persons should be prepared for when that day of evil comes.
This is exactly what I experienced as the head of security at my former church. The leadership wanted to check a box to appease people but they really did not support what we as security did. We were blamed for all the church's security problems but it was mostly the pastors and staff not being security minded that caused the issues.
Thanks for sharing, yes worship teams are one of the worst for culture constantly leaving doors open 🤦🏾♂️
Lack of a coherent vision and leadership are our biggest issues.
Proverbs 29:18 I believe it is, when there is no vision the people perish… stick with it, it’s a long game for sure.
🗣”we will never have a problem” is like saying,” We will NEVER have a FIRE 🔥, therefore we don’t have fire extinguishers.” 🙀😭😱.
Thanks, denial of danger is a real thing. Only yesterday a pastor asked me how do we convince people that we need security, I said it’s in the Bible.
I’m new to the church security team at my church, whereas just recently we had a changing of the guards so to speak where new leader ship has stepped in to do security. Gratefully, the church I attend realizes how important Security is and we all volunteer security as part of a ministry of helps, so it was great to hear what you said about that. I have been looking for various information on church security and this is how I found you on CZcams.
This is great Tommy. We hope that our channel serves you. You might find our weekly church crime reporting useful: www.worshipsecurity.org/blog
Lack of interest by the main staff in attending even the basic-level training classes. They support the team and what we have put in place, but they don't really know what we look for, why we look for it, and how we respond.
Keep at it Ursa, your not alone. Soon enough they will see the value in training!
Our church has no formal security ministry. I was recently tasked to develop one, we have a core group of people who will be strong members of the ministry. It would be helpful to get a basic outline of how to get this ministry started.
Mike sorry I missed this, how has it been going? Have you read my book Securing Church Operations. Please send me an to team@kingswoodsc.com I have some free resources that will help you.
8. Selection process of the RIGHT team members as well as establishing the right roles for each team member
David that is a great edition for an 8th. Select the right team members, thanks for sharing.
Awesome, I am currently a volunteer with a security background and systems design. I was asked to help our local church and surprised. I made recommendations and quickly became number 6. I see 3, 4, 5 and 7 quickly led to me being number 6. Thanks these are great points for me to add in upcoming discussions.
sheeple don't often see the need for security. they get what they plan for :-(
I’m security for my wife and I at Church and everywhere else. Why at Church? Because I’m a 30+ year of service retired LEO and was sacked by a 20 something year old “elder” and his team of mostly 20 something security guys. I’ve been asked by the worship leader if I’d still protect others if trouble came. My response is of course, right after I get my wife to safety.
#8- refusing to take counsel from professionals in security because they’re not youngsters.
Seeking the right counsel is so important… I can’t think of one but there has to be scripture about seeking advice from the right people?
Proverbs 20:18 and many others advise taking counsel, wise counsel. The Lord has a reason for letting us bump our heads, young and old. I just pray others won’t have to pay a price for Rehoboam’s foolishness.
You are spot-on regarding no change in church security or feeling like we're not making a change. To be candid, like a lot of things in life we grow comfortable in what we do and inadvertently stimy any growth in that area, and church security is no exception. I find myself very frustrated when another team that is on and I'm able to worship with my family, they don't have enough members to cover the parking lot/perimeter...and don't think it's a big deal. I tell them often to let me know if they are short-handed, I will pull a double if thats what it takes. They never ask. It's like 50% of the teams train on their personal time in an attempt to be the best they can be(and I mean train in all areas, not just firearm training), 25% do not train but DO carry(which scares me), the remaining 25% have a pulse and thats about it. That last 25% are the ones that seldom show up for scenario based training on Saturdays. And then there is this (really dumb) mindset that a lot of folks still have and they will even make comments like "you know how many people are armed in our church??? A bad actor wouldn't stand a chance!". I just shake my head, that should NEVER be the mindset of a protector. My thoughts instantly go to "how many innocent people would be killed in that scenario?"
Read Psalms 144:1 "Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle."
Great scripture we love it!
This was timely to just appear on my feed this Sunday morning. I am a long time volunteer in a church security ministry. I have recently been promoted to running a satellite church building (our church has multiple buildings but considered one big family).
And boy, it’s been an eye opener. I miss the support we had back where I was. What I’ve gotten since I just took over this month is “we are so thankful you are here….. but don’t cost us money.” I’m ok with that to some degree - for years I’ve provided my own equipment. But we need some medical supplies that aren’t being pilfered by the youth group when someone skins a knee and nobody tells us, and I’d sure like to have an AED box so it isn’t just hiding in a corner (and I’ve been told even that was a donation from county sheriff office).
I think I’m going to work around the issue by just financing it myself over time. If supplies just “show up” I’m sure I won’t hear about it
Keep with it, the world is changing and many churches will have to change.. Your doing Holy work my friend let us know how we can champion for you!
@@churchsecuritytraining I’ve subscribed to the channel. Thank you for the encouragement.
I like the way you get right to the point!
This is a great video, thank you.
David
Glad it was helpful! I wish I didn’t have a cold during the recording but it makes it real I guess.
I agree that training is important, however, it must be applicable to the environment. A general certification class is not specific to every situation. Who goes where, who covers what, who delivers aide? These are all issues which must be addressed.
Very true the style and depth of training can change depending on the church and role of the volunteer. Thanks for watching!
Everything you said we have experienced in attempting to keep our church safe!
Thanks for sharing… I sure wish they didn’t exist!
Ordered your book. Our congregation is small, and a not insignificant part of it are of a Mennonite background (staunch pacifists). That said, I feel strongly supported, but am struggling to get a formal program in place.
Certainly lack of budgetary funding for security program. I am always getting asked why I need to spend money on (product) or why can't this be done by volunteers.
Thanks for sharing Brian, take small steps and in time it will change. You’ll just have to feel Al title but of pain but keep walking towards the light. Good luck!
Security fails in addition: no overall plan or control for who is carry a gun on the team: what ammo is used. I know church security who carry ball ammo, go thru the bad guy and hit a church member. A basis notion and is over looked. Second, no training of the church members. What do people, untrained do when hear gun shot? Get up and run, now you have people between the target and the church security.
We fail at our church because: 1. Fail to take seriously, 2. If we do think about it it is short lived and not re-evaluated periodically, 3. We do not have dedicated people weekly assigned; no accountability
That is the majority of failure causes.
I feel your pain.. At my church we started with one person then grew the program from there. Every church feels safe when nothing happens and can get complacent. Would love to talk about this with you more. My email is team@kingswoodsc.com if you want to reach out. Simon
@@RustebadgeAgree, it’s the reason I just wrote my latest book called how to talk with your leader on church security giving ways to get leadership but in. It’s a challenge and not easy but so rewarding when it happens. Simon
My wife n I are now in our second church with profound armed security, uniformed and greyman. I applaud their presence! For years attending Presbyterian churches no knowable security was present. These two I mention are by name non-denom's but are Baptist in governance. Is security a denominational thing? I pray not, that it be a wisdom thing yes. Catch up Presbys!
I have seen churches with "greymen" in the sanctuary, as well as in the choir. Letting it "slip" that there are armed people in places around, without saying how many or where is good, as long as it is not a whisper with no backup.
In 2022 the Israeli prime minister urged citizens to carry their firearms during worship service due to the violence taking place. I personally don't subscribe to any religion but I want my religious friends and family to be safe when worshiping, and that can only happen if some people are carrying a firearm (and preferrably trained for active shooter situations).
Always good to be prepared
One of the biggest challenges is Volunteers don’t train a lot because they have busy life work family ect so it’s hard for them to train and then ya ask them to set aside 1 day a month then buy there own ammo and then pay gas tolls and drive its a lot
Leadership doesn't see the need.
It’s definitely needed in this day and age. It’s not about. Can you find a scripture Or a verse it’s about the culture in which we live today.
Actually I have seen all 7 reasons acting out, albeit not in the majority of the congregation. However, what matters in my family is that I will not attend church anywhere I am not allowed to protect my family. I carry concealed so no one should feel threatened... and let's face facts here: if an active shooter attacks us they will most likely be carrying a long gun, something church security cannot do without causing the "gun free" crowd to fall back on their brain washing even if it kills some of us.
That is a challenge. As much I would like to say stick with it, if a church is in denial and not following security protocols. Sometimes you have to go and serve where you are appreciated. Thanks for sharing.
Our church has what they call a "security team". They have cameras in various locations. But no one is armed because the pastor is against firearms period. I don't call that a security team at all, because a gunman would have no problem if he ever got inside.
That's a forensic install. It will document all the death and destruction.
You may want to point out to your pastor that since he is not allowing preventative measures he and the church may be LIABLE in court for any damage due to neglect.
Orémus Y'all. 2:41
All 7!
I really wish it wasnt but thats the reality for many, keep up the good work!
Please pray for our congregation because our head of security keeps asking for help, training, volunteers, etc and management doesn’t think is needed.
@@MG-dl1lo Please reach out to me at team@worshipsecurity.org I’d like to gift you a copy of my book about talking with church leaders.
The No. 1 reason churches fail is due to faith. True story. I have faith, however my faith is vested in the fact that religion nor ‘God’ is real.
Thanks for watching… yes we still come across people that say God will protect me, that isn’t always true.
Well, one is, they’re not professionally trained there an usher one day and Security the next that’s the main problem
Those things only happen at other places, right?
Some might say, it will never happen here! Thanks for sharing.
Peter drawing on the High Priest's servant and taking a swing to defend Jesus is some BDE (big disciple energy).
Yes and Jesus never said why do you have the sword. He knew their was a time when violence was necessary to defend yourself but this situation wasn’t it. Thanks for watching.
When there are shootings, the staff is all about security. After a while though, they get complacent and the anti-gunners start whining about how they feel unsafe around those who are armed. The majority approve of security, but the whiners are much louder and more obnoxious. You can talk to them all you care to, but liberals cannot be placated as they feel they are more important than others.
You are right William. As sad as it is after every mass shooting or breach of security we have a short window of opportunity to make changes or get people on board.
We agree you have a limited window to use the momentum before the church forgets again and goes back to normal.
another case where it is just easier to read a list.....
WalMart shoppers vs Protestants 😊
We have actual off duty uniformed cops at my church (about 5-6), along with the executive security team for the Pastor. We feel pretty safe.
You feel safe? do you feel safe enough that you stop doing situational awareness. If you do, you are not safe, you are lucky.
I laugh when I hear church security. Security is security. There ain't much difference between mall & church security.
Thanks for educating our enemies. So stupid.
God allows this to happen, or he can't stop it from happening. Therefore, God is responsible. If I give a child a pack of matches and he burns a house down, it would be my fault for giving a child matches. But God gives us matches and when bad things happen it our "free will"? see the disconnect? We are supposed to be God's children and he allowed us to develop and USE nuclear weapons? Hmmm or perhaps, he isn't real. Logic points that way.
if there was a god you wouldnt need security
This is a great question.. so if no God how did the heavens and the earth and life forms get started?
@@churchsecuritytrainingcertanly was not an alien creature that we now owe alegiance to
if there was no sin we wouldn't need security
WHEN SANCTUARIES NEED WEAPONS😂
