THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. I feel like it deserves to be mentioned that Ben fidgeting with the Omnitrix is very in character for him. It's been established in multiple episodes, all the way back to classic, that he's a fidgetter
plus he was very nervous infront of angry public
I actually kinda like that writing beat. I can't even really blame him for not being able to stop and fidgeting more when he's nervous. He's a teenager speaking to a massive public on national news and representing an entire underground alien society. Even adults have trouble public speaking in just a room of business people.
I think it's just generally cheapened by how fragile the Omnitrix has felt since the start of this series. Like this is supposed to be the completed model to the OGs prototype and made specifically for Ben whereas the prototype was made generally and intended from Max. Its a bad case of the prior inconsistent and frustrating bad writing (just to try and recapture OG charm) harms the overall perspective even when it's in character and kinda makes sense.
Funny how he could have actually won this episode if he had some rubber bands to keep his hands busy and not fuck the watch

Bruh, I didn't remember that this Invasion was so f*cking brutal as a kid. Like Incursians literally started bombarding entire globe, and those wheel flattening cities, that's some horror material. That's gonna be billions of casualties in this final. More than Dagon arc.
The giant wheel seemed comedic on the empty food planet, but then you realize it's meant for massive damage and civilian casuaties on urban areas..
This episode did alot to make the Incurseans actually intimidating
I think it’s because this was the first global invasion. With the other invasions they were mostly localized in a single area or the attacks elsewhere are fairly minor.
I like that it's implied. I dont think they were allowed to straight up show a lot of people getting seriously hurt (that's why the universe being destroyed and Ben 23 almost ripping Azmuth in half were cut off quickly) so they got away with what they could
Ink Tank does point out how they show civilians fleeing before cutting to a different shot, implying that they didn’t make it out alive but they weren’t allowed to show that

we really don’t feel the weight of what is really happening since they needed the show to be more kid friendly, but still when you think about it, yeah, thousands of civilians and plumbers are dying in this war, and is something that should be really serious, but the lighter tone of the show doesn’t let us see it
I really do think that the fake out death was a set up for Max's decision to make Ben leave the Earth since he says "At least this way I know you're alive."

I think astrodactyl has wings simply for the sake of steering. Like how rockets have fins. The wings could also be a vestigial organ. Maybe they’re ancestors used to fly with wings before the jet packs evolved.
This is a great headcannon.
Find the idea of biologically evolving a metal jetpack hilarious though. Maybe Astrodactyl has a metal skeleton made of the same material? Would make the evolution make at least a tiny bit of sense.

I believe the fake out death was included more so to justify Max’s decision to agree to the Incursean’s terms. That line “At least this way, I’ll know you’re alive.” It’s to show that him thinking Ben died (however, brief that thought was) really affected him and he doesn’t want that to actually happen.
Also that he has seen too much. Stacking effect, man. Even Max has limits after so many Ws

I love the designs of the mutant To'kustars because they're so unique and cool but also look like a huge nightmare to animate.
I'm so impressed by the animators in this show, so many complex designs to work with

I wonder if the reason they included the death fakeout was to give more weight to max telling Ben to go because at least he'll be alive, like he thought he saw him die once and he doesn't want to risk his grandson
That seems to be his arc of the episode as he also wanted Ben to stay back when the omnitrix wasn't working properly.
Max sort of got to experience how Ben felt when he faked his death in Max Out. It does seem like a sore subject considering Ben only brought it up once when hunting down Ultimate Kevin.

Ben definitely needed to leave. His fighting ability was compromised by both the randomizer function and drastically reduced transformation time, and after taking out Milleus, the Omnitrix was completely drained. If he tried to fight, the way bads on the other side of the planet would massacre thousands, if not millions, before he got a chance to stop them without Alien X, which he may not get the chance to use because of Bellicus and Serena.
And I doubt he has the power IN the omnitrix to use a massive DNA wave, and even if he did, he may not have the range without a hyperspace jump gate available.
Would the DNA wave even work here? The omnitrox might just see them as a sub species. Sorta like how Malware's problem was his unstable genetic code being his default that couldn't just be fixed with the snap of a finger.

Even if the omnitrix weren’t compromised, he’d never be able to defeat the dozens or hundreds of Way Bads cross the globe before they caused untold destruction, at least not without using Alien X, which might be too risky since he hadn’t yet figured out how to control them.
@SecretMagician Even then, we don't know if the official omnitrix carried that feature over from the AF prototype, since the ultimatrix didn't have it. And even if it did, Ben's omnitrix was super drained, and they're feral and being controlled by psychobos, so a DNA wave might not be able to stop the invasion all at once.
The fake out thing is what motivated Max into surrendering.

I think the randomized function makes more sense when you remember the omnitrix is a learning tool, not a weapon. Asking why somebody would want to turn into a random alien is like asking why music services like Spotify and Apple have shuffle options. It’s to give you new experiences, bring you out of your doldrums. The omnitrix has millions of aliens, you could turn into one you’ve never seen or heard of before, something you could have gone your whole life without experiencing. That’s what I think, atleast.

But even back in classic, it was established that just turning the dial repeatedly could trigger something so being in battle, constantly switching and turning the omnitrix might accidentally trigger something. And let me clarify that I'm not trying to fight you or say your theory is wrong or anything. I just like tackling things from different angles.
@@valydendor4472I mean can't fault an oversight on a prototype, I don't doubt there's still less noticeable bugs on the finished omnitrix, it's why beta tests for games are a thing and those require thousands of people because sometimes a bug just occurs every other time someone does the process to recreate it

He made people stalk, assault and insult peter for no reason unlike the other jamesons who at least have a reason to, hell they would draw the line at seeing he is just a teen.
Ben was able to cure the Highbreeds in Alien Force because he had master control at that time, I'm not sure he could access to that function right now, he is not even able to turn off the randomizer after all
He also had some crazy sci-fi tech which put the entire galaxy in range for him to cure every High Breed
I mean you also had the weird gremlins in UAF that just visited one specific town regularly and people just casually knew that was a thing that happened. I feel like the existence of aliens on Earth is relatively known about by Humans, maybe even a bit before the Omnitrix comes alone, it’s just nobody ever knew they had THIS big of a population on the planet I guess
Exactly, they knew alien type activities were happening, but they didn’t think a whole city was built underneath them
I remember in an earlier episode Ink Tank commented about how aliens can just venture out on the surface without incident
At this point it’s no secret that aliens exist but 1) most people are still used by o the idea of aliens being hostile invaders, as these are usually the kind of aliens who make their presence known
And 2) as you said, they didn’t expect there to be a large population of aliens living right beneath their city, which is a terrifying realization to have and can cause paranoia to get the better of them, wondering how long they’ve been there and wondering what all they might’ve been doing
The "Character thinks loved one is dead but it is shown to the audience that they are alive" thing works if you do it right. You can feel for the character and their grief all the same and the anticipation for their reunion can be unmatched.
The best example is that old cartoon where a dog thinks his kitten friend got baked into a cookie. (The worst example is of course The Rise of Skywalker)

I see the fake-out death scene with Max actually adding to his decision to send Ben away, because at least he'll stay alive. You could even argue that Max knew they were cornered, so agreed to Ben leaving to let him get backup since the entire universe would/might be willing to help him.

Seeing how amazing this two parter is and how it and the Highbreed arc really sold a "war" scenario in the Ben 10 setting, only makes me sad we will never get to see the Limax War
imagine it like a combination of Secret Invasion (the good ones, like in Earth's Mightiest Heroes) and Independence Day
friend of mine even came up with the idea that when the Plumbers fight back on the Limax homeworld to retaliate, Ben enlists the help of Reinrassic III and the Highbreed by dropping their Weather Towers like portable structures and change the weather, causing it to rain for the first time in the Limax planet and weakening their forces
Correction: the one you're talking about from EMH is Secret Invasion with the Skrulls. Secret Wars was a multiversal crossover event with the Beyonder and Doctor Doom.

I think the Highbreeds arc is better.
Two seasons with good development, the Highbreeds are a more credible threat than the toads and Ben led an army.

All I can think of for the use of the Ranomizer function is, if you have Master Control but are fighting like a telepathic alien, since you have to think what alien you next become they get a bit of warning of who you might become, so since Azmuth knows Ben uses it as a weapon he put this function in for more added unpredictability in combat since Ben has been known to adapt well even when mistranforming
Alien X should be immune to this and I’m sure Clockwork would be too if it’s not a living organism

In "Destroy All Aliens" Tetrax Activated A Different Kind Of Randomizer, A "TimeOut-Randomized" That Turned Ben In A Different Alien Instead Of DeTransforming Every Time He Timed Out
Tbh I completely forgot about that feature
For curing the way bads, the highbreed suffered from inbreeding, ben didnt revert them to a previous form, he dumped more varied DNA into them and counteract the infertility they were suffering.
Way bads would likely need more to fix their feral nature beyond genetic diversity. The omnitrix could potentially do that but Ben hasnt quite done it before and he doesn't have the same control he previously had when he healed the highbreed.
I don't think there's anything to "fix", as they were made that way.
plus Omnitrix at that time was under Master Control mode and here its off

I wouldn't count randomization as a mistransformation because like you said he'd have to pick the alien he initially wanted in the first place and he didn't even intend to use the Omnitrix

Funny enough, there was a video game for this 2 part finale called “Ben 10 Omniverse 2”, which I have played on the Xbox 360 & it’s basically about how Ben got his incursion form & infiltrated their ranks.

I think the point of the fake out death was so Max would push Ben to going into exile at the end. IE the line at 29:47
14:19 IT'S _MY_ BOY! Back after years of being MIA! Although his scene was wrapped up rather quickly, I'm glad he's actually reoccurring this time around instead of a one-off who wasn't even given a proper name.
It's almost time for one of my favorite things Ben has ever done in the franchise. I mean, Ben's done plenty of cool things throughout Omniverse but next episode is one of the big things.

I remember when I was younger I randomly watched this episode after, being pretty familiar with the franchise up to this point, and ONLY this part. For years I legit just thought this is how Ben10 ended
I was actually shocked they threw Ben away in space while being handcuffed when I watched this episode randomly one day too, because I only watched till Ultimate Alien and some of Omniverse and then got busy with high school stuff and sports
“Resistance is Futile” is a semi common saying but after the late 80s tends to be a reference to the Borg from Star Trek

I think the fake out kinda pays off at the end when Max says "At least that way I know you're alive", cause during the battle he did think he had lost Ben and doesn't wanna experience that for real
This episode and part 2 were my favourite omniverse growing up. This episode had such a significant impact on me growing up, I used to say Ben's expression at 9:05 a lot everywhere. I used to watch these episodes a lot.

I have to disagree, Ben having shotrer duration for his aliens with the No Recharge addition makes so much more sense. The Recharge mode is there for a reason, so it makes sense that if it gets bypassed, there's a backup failsafe that makes it so Ben isn't transformed for too long.

I do think that the whole ben argument of "stay and fight versus run" isn't about if Ben can beat them or not, no doubt he could with the plumbers alien x Gwen Kevin and other factors. If he really wanted to BEN COULD WIN no doubt in my mind, but It would turn Earth and Bellwood into an all-out war zone, not to mention the whole under town JUST being discovered and high attentions between aliens and humans. The decision to run wasn't Ben could win It was preventing the death and subsequent tension between humans and aliens. Abandon make the right decision as an all-powerful super weapon, he made the right decision as a hero and a celebrity just like how Grandpa Max said.

I think the randomizer would be a pretty cool thing to do for a throw away episode/a training episode or something. It would really show Ben's enginuity and creativity.

The problem with the Way Bads isn't that they're mutated, it's that they're feral, they have no intelligence, even if Ben did cure them, they'd still be feral since they've got no intelligence and were force grown.
Tbh, I never really got why people were confused about the inclusion of a randomizer. I feel like part of it was that it was an easy feature for Azmuth to implement and he figured “screw it, why not?,” but even then, there’s still many circumstances I could see it being useful for:
1. Training
2. Fighting an army (the randomizer paired with the Omnitrix AI potentially sometimes choosing aliens based on the circumstances could allow for an automatic quickchange)
3. As a failsafe to keep the user confused in the state that they need to be taken down.
4. When dealing with an enemy and trying to determine their weakness (think how Ben tried out all of his aliens against the Big Tick. The randomizer would allow him to test out a variety of different aliens against the user’s opponent in a way that they don’t have to keep manually deciding on an alien to quickchange to).
I’m sure these even more incredibly specific scenarios I haven’t thought of.

I think Max thinking Ben was dead during the battle could help explain why chose to surrender at the end, because he knew how it felt to lose Ben and didn't want to experience that again, so like he said, at least he knows he's alive this way
i feel like the reason they did the fakeout death for ben was specifically for max’s character decision in the end to let ben go, even saying “this way ill know you are alive”, since max was always the guy who never gave up no matter what and would fight till the end, but this time he was in shock after feeling like he had lost ben and was scared because of it

The idea is to do the Echo Echo thing from Duped, but only split into two. Turn one into Clockwork and freeze time, and use the other to traverse the planet and defeat all the Way Bads.
I'd sacrifice Special Delivery for the To'kustar DNA episode without remorse.
