This music actually makes me feel kinda sad, only because when I go and look at the highscores a bunch of them are from around 16 years ago from friends I haven't seen in a very long time.

Ah.....before the word "Campaign" was used to describe the Main Game.
I still like to use the term "Main Game" in my colloquial language today....
That was the era before multiplayer became so central to so many modern games, particularly FPS games.
Let's face it. The Halo games had a decent single-player experience, but nearly all the fun with them was in the multiplayer.
I remember when I first saw this game. I was 6 years old in 1998. My dad comes home from work with this awesome looking n64 box. No event or birthday. "Put it in", he tells me with a smile as he settles back on the couch.
The fact he just surprised me on a whim then went about being dad just stuck with me. I remember that first level blowing me away. To a 6 year old it was real.
I remember playing this when i was 9. Hearing this now sounds like the farewell music to my childhood. O how I wanted to grow up so fast. Yet little did I know how badly I would want to be young again.
Exactly how I felt when listening to this. Years of of my youth just suddenly popped into my head. Its such a bittersweet song that I thought nothing of when I was 11. Now lsitening to it when I'm 19 it's amazing.
I was 8 when I first owned this game and like you, this music takes me back to the days when my dad and I would play this game. We would be so determined to beat Andross and after defeating him we would sometimes just let this music play.

I first started playing SF64 back in 2009 when I was 4. In my opinion it was one of the best games ever, it's my favorite alongside Yoshi's Story and Minecraft as favorite games.

I was born '93 as well. The Super Nintendo and more that drew us in and made us appreciate the classic way games just were. With the 64 and PS1 right around the corner which brought forth amazing three dimensional games. All the way up until now, it's been one crazy adventure. But this song is beautiful.. and it takes me back to the world that once was. It all feels like an entire life time ago... It has been... We are 29 years old now.. about to be 30... What a life it's been :'(...

When i was 12 i always use to look up at the stars with the main menu theme playing in the background and imagine seeing the Great Fox with Fox,Falco,Peppy and Slippy just passing by on the tip of Earths atmosphere. But now i am 38 years old and went to look up again tonight and would'nt you beleive it, they just passed by with the ghost of James following behind in his Arwing....wow!

This really encapsulates the gold of Star Fox for me. On one hand you've got fuckin animals flying around in space with over the top enemies and fast paced rail shooting mechanics. On the other, everyone does take themselves seriously, and the story is pretty grim all things considered with losses and deaths on both sides. It's perfect because it leaves the vibe of the game open to the players interpretation, it doesn't try to force some message down your throat, it's just good fun that you can take as serious or as goofy as you'd like.

Good lord. Talk about a nostalgia bomb.
Much of the N64 music library makes me feel this way; this theme in particular is really touching. About two years after this game was released a series of events happened in my parent's lives, and by extension mine and my siblings lives, that caused disquiet and pain for a decade after. Life overwhelmed us, and by the time I finally found steady ground again, I was an adult, with my own stresses and responsibilities to tend to.
But when I listen to this, it really takes me back to being nine years old, summer light coming through the windows, no worries on the horizon yet. This song is so beautiful that it's practically angelic.

The good old days of the world, the days of innocence. I wasn't as old, I do believe I was 5 when this game came out and we were playing it. The game is amazing. The song is fantastic. Calming and beautiful and heavily nostalgic. Takes me back to a world where I can no longer find. Back to being a young child. No where near as many stresses as there is now. And for me.. back to the times where my mother was still alive and well. It all feels so so long ago... Doesn't even feel like the same life time.. but here's to the beauty in the simplicity of our lives once upon a time. And to a beautiful song.
Words cannot describe the music emitted here. The notes are magnificently smooth, and you feel an awesome sense: the game is taking you on a galactic adventure through time, in all its poetic glory. The game in itself was one of the best Nintendo games and one of the best games of all time. Star Fox 64 had amazing gameplay, and heroically ethereal soundtrack, at least this song does. You can't help but feel sad with the opening of the song, but by the end of the refrain your soul is lifted by the sounds of eerily divine chords. Strangest thing about this comment: I literally started humming this out of the blue whilst taking a massive sh*t (lol). You shall always be one of the best, Star Fox 64, play onward you beautiful music. Enjoy my friends, the legacy of Nintendo 64 remembered.

Proof that Kōji Kondō is the best Nintendo composer.
Imagine being a massive company like Nintendo and having as your "best" composer the guy that makes music for Mario games. David Wise, Kenji Yamamoto, ACE+, Jun Ishikawa, Junichi Masuda. And that's just me restricting to five composers that are way more better than Kondō.

He's a legend like Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda. Also it's kinda ironic that you're bragging onto that, since this video is from Star Fox 64 who Kondo also composed lol.
If that's your logic...what the others have made?
David Wise is mostly DKC, Kenji is mostly Metroid, Jun Ishikawa is mostly Kirby, Junichi Masuda is mostly Pokemon, ACE + is a group so it doesn't count.
They are sure awesome composers but I don't think they're at the same level as Koji Kondo.

Compare this to the upbeat Music of Super Mario Bros. and the soulful melodies of Zelda and you realize that Koji Kondo can write anything for any genre of music and make it AMAZING! Koji Kondo you are a true master.

As someone born in 91, having had heard this song originally in the joyous times of my youth, nowadays, listening to this really brings back a whole lot of feelings and memories. Kind of makes me wish I could just hang out of my family in my Grandparents' game room again and all play games like this, and Goldeneye, and Super Mario 64. Great times.

I remember hearing this in a lucid dream where I died as a kid and Fox was welcoming me into Paradise, my entire room bathed in a pale, ethereal light.
Played this on the Virtual Console for the first time in months. This theme almost brought a tear to my eye. I never got to experience the N64 era myself (born in 1999, by the time I was old enough to start playing video games, the N64 was discontinued). But those who did must've had an awesome childhood that I would beg to have had.
It was an amazing time to be a gamer in the late 90's, I was around 14 when the N64 came out and myself along with a few friends spent so many hrs playing the likes of this, Goldeneye, F-Zero, Mario Kart etc. Miss those days I do.

I was born in 1999 as well, but because the OSH care at my school had a bunch of old consoles, namely the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Nintendo 64, I could experience quite a few iconic retro games, and now feel nostalgia for games a lot of people 10 years older than me feel.
One of the most immersive games ever...totally blew everything away that I played before it. The cinematic feel of the game, the distinct worlds, the beautiful music...my room suddenly became home to the most intruiging virtual galaxy i ever visited. I was hooked and completed the game tens of times. Even after having played it so much the raw shooting gameplay kept me coming back for more highscore-beating action.
It all makes me sentimental towards my own youth but also to that time and place where some Japanese geniuses had the vision to make this game. What are all these people doing now? Will they ever feel nostalgic 1996, when they were elite software developers with the talent and financial backing to stun the world?
Ramble ramble, all love for this game, but I still want another Starfox! Namco and Rare couldn't live up to the standards of the first two games, do it yourself Nintendo!

They all differ, but they all entice the same feeling in your heart when remembering those "good ole days." I’ve never played a Star Fox game before. I tried zero, but couldn’t get into it.
But something about this theme strikes a spiritual nerve with me. It makes me realize that the life I live and the perspective I see every day is so SO small compared to how awesome the rest of the world is! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the world has to show me.

Star Fox 64 was a masterpiece. The characters, pacing, general aesthetic, music, and even voice acting came together in a way no game in the franchise has since. The only thing this game was missing was multiplayer co-op. Why the emphasis on a team if you can't play together as one? Maybe one day Nintendo will revisit the 64 story like this... Or it'll just keep doing 3d remakes of other old games.

My heart is pounding just remembering these moment from my child hood, reading these comments here just shows how inocent we were as kids. The 90's were the best moments of my life. No worries of getting a GF, working, days of heavy sleep, and no drinking, just playin ole cool-aid and playin out side imotating characters from cartoons and games.

in the First night in my New Flat i actually listend to this Soundtrack for like 30min because it was so Calming while i was thinking about Life & stuff.

Man, I only ever played Star Fox 64 as part of a two minute demo on smash bros brawl, but THIS right here tells you you're in for one heck of a ride.
Listening to this just reminds me of how old I'm getting, and how sad I am that even though I still own all these games, that I can never truly relive the magic of having played them for the first time, with an untainted view of the world.
It makes me think of what will happen with Shigeru Miyamoto dies. Sure, I don't follow a lot of his recent work and some of his business ethics leave much to be desired, but that mans work between 91-2002 just had such an enormous impact on me as a child. I don't 'cry' or aare when Celebs die, usually, but I dread the thought: maybe because it makes me face my own mortality, and maybe because it's another reminder that those days are gone and will never come again.
Millions of people will be crushed when Miyamoto dies. Even if gamers don't follow his work today (I don't, really) the influence he has had on the medium is so enormous that it will be devastating for anyone who grew up with his work. I mean, really. What will the world say when the man who created Mario, Starfox, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and many others - dies?

Im 25, i played this game when i was like 7 or so; and i still remember the first time i heard this song in my old big TV box. I spaced out, and ill never forget this song. It is pure childhood.
When I finished the game multiple times already and had exhausted all my replay value on the game, this song used to feel eerie, like it represented the end of the world or the end of my life, it felt like the game was now empty and soulless, but now the song feels calming, nostalgic and peaceful, like a reminder of simpler times.
Like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, Nintendo got everything absolutely bang on first time with Starfox 64.
Team Star Fox has come a long way through the lylat system. Only one planet remains. The pilots take one last look at each other aboard the Great Fox. This is their final mission, one way or another. They nod to each other in silent understanding as they climb into their arwings and enter Venom airspace.

This nearly brought tears to my eyes. I played this game back in 1998 when I was 10 years old. Hearing this song brings memories. I remember old childhood friends I havent seen in years, old pets that were still alive, great toys and video games that I had, the days when I still lived with my family before I moved out, the innocnece of childhood, the feeling that adulthood seemed so far away and would never come. Reminds me of a time 13 years ago. I knew a friend who lived around the corner from me. I met him in softball and then grew to be good friends. We played this game and LOVED it. One day though i went to his house and another family had moved in. Apparently he moved away and forgot to tell me. To this day i never forgot those awesome times we had. Amazing how something like this holds such weight to us all.
I was born in 91 and here in Brazil at that time, it wasn't easy to have videogames. I had the Super Nintendo and only played the N64 at my cousins' house. Even so, not having owned the N64 at the time, this song gives me a lot of nostalgia. I was able to beat Star Fox only on the Nintendo 3DS, more than 20 years later.

Kairu Hakubi There's only been 7 games, and 3 of those 7 are an unreleased sequel, a Zelda clone with a Star Fox reskin, and a remake with no worthwhile new content.
The series has remarkably few games taking that into account, plus the fact that Star Fox and Star Fox 64 were some of the best selling games for their respective systems.
On top of that, Adventures, Assault, and Command weren't even made by Nintendo.
The series needs a new game. It's been 17 years since the last proper entry.

I remember being amazed by the 3D. I would just watch the game. I would often die in the game just watching the graphics. It was hilarious, but funny. This game.. is just amazing. If only new Star Fox games could reach this quality again...

I was born in 91 and this game was one of my favorites. I lived a pretty rough and lonely life as an only child of a single mother with drug issues that extends deep into the family. Games were my escape. Games gave me the chance to have some control and be the hero. To make accomplishments in the game and get recognition and love I couldn't get in the real world from the ones I needed it most from. I loved this game for so many reasons beyond even it's fun gameplay. I connected with fox. My father had moved away off the whim when I was 5 years old to Florida and I live in Massachusetts. I would try my hardest and beat the game multiple times just to get to the ending where I reunited with my dad... Because it was the closest thing I could get to the real thing. I remember the night this song made the biggest impact for me was when my grandma passed and I was around 5 years old. The night I found out i was sad and went to play this game. It was night time and when this song came on.i suddenly stopped and went to my window to stare up at the stars picturing her face and facing my first realization of death. The tears ran down my face but at the same time this song playing connected with me and uplifted me. I remember I wiped my tears and said "I will see you again one day". 26 years later this song resonates deep in my soul. Thank you for providing an escape. Thank you for touching my soul with your music and story. Thank you for this master piece 🙏

I was born a couple of years after this game came out, however I still believe this game is better than any modern game I have played... However I feel the same way about retrogaming as a whole XD!
You cannot unlock the expert game mode until you have collected 15 medals in each mission. I have collected 14 medals, except for Sector Z which is the hardest medal for the entire game. The following quotes by your teammates when destroying the missile in Sector Z. Falco: One missile down, Peppy: One missile destroyed, and even Slippy: Scratch one missile. I have managed to get medals on the hard missions on Star Fox 64, and they are: Katina, Area 6, Venom II, Titania, Bolse, and even Solar.
Shout out to my dad, he's the reason I even game and know about the great awesome classics of the past that were before my time (Born in 2000).
First time i played this game was on Sylvester, around 9 Years ago. We were on a party of friends of my parents and there were also a few kids - the youngest one being around 14 at the time and the oldest one 17? (I was 6 or 7?)
They played through the entire game on that night, game overing multiple times before finally defeating the fake andross. I still remember so many things about this Party. I remember when the game ended and Andross laug came, a guy stood up, pointed at the screen and shouted "He isnt dead yet! I knew it!". When Myamotos name came up in the credits, two of the people stood up and bowed for him - which now turned into my ritual whenever i see his name in a game lol.
Now, 9 years later, i am sitting here, playing Starfox 64 on my N64, the room only being lit by the projector lights with this song filling the dimly lit room while i am on my phone, scrolling through reddit. This song is amazing, and it couldnt fit better for any other game and any other scenario.

Invoking such a feeling is completely unnecessary for the primary menu of the game, but it is also used for the High Score Entry & Review Screens, where it's a lot more appropriate.

Ever since I was a kid, all I could ever think about when I heard this theam. Was team StarFox Saluting out of respect for the fallen allies and casualties of innocents. As James is off elsewhere doing the exact same.
That's all I ever thought about after I had the game beat for the first time. I have never served in the military myself but I do have a long line of military personnel in my family so coming home to a quiet house and being told that a loved one or friend is no longer with us was quite common for me even at a young age. I understood early on that war was far more than what any of us could ever imagine at a young age and I knew a very often led to more Bloodshed than saving others. So to say I looked at games like Star Fox very differently than most kids my age at the time would definitely be an understatement.
Everytime I hear this thing I don't think of main menu music for a video game but a memorial fanfare for those lost fighting on the battlefield or have passed away after their service.
This would be the saddest video to play at a gamer's funeral. The longer you'd see the menu the more you'd wish that he/she was alive to hit start.

Every time I hear "Star Fox", I'm reminded of all the times I visit my cousin when on vacation to the Dominican Republic when I was around 4 or 5 years old. We would play this for hours on end on his N64 and always died laughing every time we defeated the first boss when he screams "MY EMPEROR, I'VE FAILED YOUUUUUU!!!!". I remember we would shout that line to annoy everybody.
I doubt he remembers that anymore since he's gone on to do other things and is now a father, but I haven't forgotten. Perhaps the next time I visit him I'll jog his memory by bringing my N64 and a copy of this game. Sure it would be easier to emulate it, but doing it properly on the actual console just feels right.
My first Star Fox experiences also came from my cousin, haha! Although we were using his Wii's virtual console, as he did not have an N64 (and I didn't know what one was at the time, I was very young), it was still a marvelous time. I still quote the game sometimes to this day, XD
Things were so much more innocent back then, now it's only a memory....I want my childhood back.
