- This video essay focuses on why modern videogames are so creatively bankrupt and feel so boring when compared to old school video games that we used to love back in the 2000s and further. Even after so many reboots and remasters, it doesn't seem like gaming is what it used to be and leaves so many people feeling like "i don't have fun with games anymore".

CS was actually a Half-Life 1 mod. It came out in 1999 and later saw a full release after Valve acquired the rights and hired the developer.
The issue, was the Games now are just souless.. None of the games are about the GAME more towards how much can we suck out of people. It became harder for me to enjoy games because I realized most of them are missing the SOUL of Gamers. We have empty husks of unfinished productions that could be great but never leap over that last hurdle to transcend.
essentially i would summarize that to a sense of game devs looking at games like financial investments (where they dont care if it fails or not, they'll just make another one) while gamers look at games as time investments and we hate to invest time in a game that will give us nothing in return. and most games currently are a waste of time

I think the glitchs at release, The eradication of physical copies of games meaning poorer kids and gamers cannot play through pre owned or swaps and micro transaction type games has killed the industry.
Also as we get older and played games and watch Films the new Stuff rarely excites us as we have seen it all before, as a kid you are mostly experiencing it for the first time. .
Halo Infinite still pisses me off. I've never seen a company release a game with so much potential and then just fucking ignore it for over a year. I genuinely hate Microsoft and 343 now, and I don't think that will ever change.

I've been having a blast the last year or two, then I realized it's because I've been playing a bunch of games from 2017/2018 that just came out on PC or that I somehow missed lol
You mention bugs and all i can think about is playing gta v online today and my character randomly exploding in a mission that then bugged the task i was doing and left me with no choice but to shut the entire game down.. t.t... unbelievable.
It's because it is the pr team making them. They are avoiding every possible lawsuit.

i think one of the major reasons is that video games used to give us a space where we could behave as masculinely as we wanted. they were environments of pure meritocracy and healthy competition, if you were good at the game you knew it, you didn't need some dumb game character telling you "hey bro you just did a swell job, here take this green gun because you were such a good boy." now that this masculine pathos has been systematically removed from gaming it has been turned into nothing. at this point i see GTA VI as my final hope, although it is dim rockstar definitely did it with RDR2. only time will tell.
Literally all aspects of life are like that, now. It's sad. Lifeless, or if not lifeless, just all hate all the time.

The problem is not modern games as a whole, It's mostly the AAA developers and publishers. 2023 was an AWFUL year for AAA games, but if you look at the indie scene, it's almost never been better!
You can find many fantastic indie experiences for under $20, sometimes even under 10!

Oh mate, you should include Sims. Fucking hell, they made Sims 4 so bland, compare Sims 4 with all its current expansions and it still feels more bland than Sims 3 basegame. They removed so many nice gameplay features for Sims 4 and reintroduced them in DLC-packs later on.
