    the configuration with the two Humbuckers and the mini in the middle is dope... it truly captures the Gibson tone and the Fender tone in one guitar.

    Sounds great! However, given the benefits of the NF pickup alone as Brian extolled his love of in the studio, you would think that the Special would have an option to toggle the middle position of the 5 way switch between bridge/neck and middle pickups. For a guitar whose raison d'etat is to provide a multitude of sounds, this seems like a big oversight or at least a missed opportunity.

    I have a 2011 Ten Top Studio in Eriza Green. Wonderful guitar. I know I am lucky, as I have 5 Cores including a brand new Modern Eagle V Ten Top in Charcoal Cherry Burst. I wish I could play them like Brian. BTW, I lve 50 miles from the factory and will make an appointment for a tour, as now, in 2024, they have reopened for tours.

      There was a guitar store going out of business in my area in 2017 and they were selling everything at discount. They had an NF3 that no one played....literally no one gave it a chance until I bought it. I will never sell it. The 3 narrow field setup is so versatile and that quick and punchy attack really suits how I play. Never selling that one!

    Great sounding guitars! I must have mental issues because I have never owned a PRS. For some reason, my mind is stuck on the brands I grew up with: Fender, Gretsch, Gibson, and Rickenbacker. I think it may be time for me to check out a PRS.

    • @SlimEstrada
      @SlimEstrada Před 2 lety +1

      You might love em or think they are vanilla. For me, PRS is always chasing a signature sound - but all the sounds have been taken. And if you want playability, then buy a Collings.

    I prefer the guitar with two mini humbuckers as I already have a McCarty 594 with two LT pickups already. However splitting the front and back pickup along with the middle .....does that quack more than the one with the two narrowfield humbuckers?

  • @CargoShorts7
    @CargoShorts7 Před 3 lety

    So torn between these two. I think the Studio would be almost perfect for me if I could get a neck and bridge funk tone without the NF. If you could only choose 1, which would it be?

    I played the special, the older (SA) special (90's) HSH and the 2011-2013 studio (57/08 version). The 58/15 LT in the neck (for the special) doesn't work for me at all, not split, nor in humbucker mode. It is a bit anemic. The 90's special was better than the newer special. However, the studio with the 57/08 was amazing, unfortunately it was a friends' and so I don't have one. Will have to play the new one with the 58/15LT in the bridge to see if that works for me.
    When the special came out I played it next to the Experience 2018 Pauls guitar, which was much snapier and articulate to my ear, so that's what I went with instead. Remember, this is my opinion and my ear. Always, always play for yourself and listen.

    that looks and sounds exactly like my special 22 semi-hollow limited edition that i bought back in mid 2018. is there something different about this one aside from taking "22" and "limited" out of the name?

    • @duanewelsh5611
      @duanewelsh5611 Před 3 lety

      Seems like it's a regular production model now instead of a "limited edition". No matter I love mine!

    • @MrLuigi2226
      @MrLuigi2226 Před 3 lety

      The new one has LT pickups instead of MTs and I think the 5-way switch operates slightly differently. But really VERY similar overall...

    • @tomyates2551
      @tomyates2551 Před 3 lety

      The pickups are now LT rather than MT. And if you look at the neck pickup, the pull pieces now face the fretboard, on the special they were flipped.
      As for how much difference that actually makes sonically, who knows.

    • @scottv8410
      @scottv8410 Před 3 lety

      @@tomyates2551 it probably sounds a little different but not quite enough for me to get the new one too. I wish they made a semi-hollow with these pickup combinations and also their piezo system. I was thinking about trying to mod one of my prs's to have that because I dont yet have any guitars with piezo pickups and I really like how they sound blended with normal electric pickups.

    Yeah these freaking pickups aren’t anything new! I have them in my 2012 studio. Would of been nice if they made a splittable version.
