This is version 3 of an SUV Cargo Storage deck, and I think I’m done. For now…
The first version was a deck platform above the cooler. That worked fairly well when loaded, but for daily driving having the deck that high wasn’t convenient.
The second version was low, about 10.5 inches off the bottom. The cooler went on top as well as the dog and had room for more gear on top as well as underneath. With the low design, it was possible to have the dog sit on her pad on TOP of a couple Frontrunner Wolf boxes for a really efficient use of space.
V2 saw the addition of the slide out table for preparing snacks and lunch on the trail as well as full on cooking if necessary. The table proved to be a really good design in function, the only problem was the CONSTANT RATTLING when the deck wasn’t loaded with a heavy cooler.
You can get a full run-down of that build here: • 3rd Gen 4Runner Overla...
Now for V3 of the SUG Cargo Deck with Slide-Out Table. This one I made from 3/4 Sanded Pine Plywood and used the Kreg K5 Pocket Hole Jig for joinery. All the tools, materials and hardware is available at Home Depot.
The wood build is probably pretty close to the mass of the metal system, given that the metal I used was thin wall steel, however the wood table is a lot heavier. That said, it was a lot easier to built, didn’t require a welder and grinding.
I could probably make the wood deck a bit lighter by cutting out some portions of the sides, and I may do that at some point.
But this design works really well and the table is really functional and doesn’t make a sound at all going down the road.

Now that's how you make a video, no wasted time. Thanks
I like how your kids are around, seeing what dad is doing and getting into your business while you are trying to work. Great video
What a great guy! So good of you to share the entire build video in detail so one can actually follow to try to duplicate this set up. AND THEN you go into further detail with directions on how to measure for your own build. Your a natural teacher, i learned a lot, family members are lucky to have such a skilled a nice guy. Thanks for sharing with us
This is exactly what i was planning todo. I just purchased an 07 Expedition and i wanted to build something very similar to keep my supplies under the unit. Thank you for the vid it clarified and took and guess work out of the entire project. I know the vid was up for 2 yrs or so but good ideas are not limited to time. Thx again👍
Love the table idea!!! We are totally doing this in our Excursion. We’ve been toting around tubs for our “camping” and “emergency” breakdown gear. It’s an annoying pain putting groceries on and around the tubs. This perfectly solves that issue. Best of all, I can make it the same height as my rear seat when folded forward so I can still load in larger items. Even better I will now have a platform for the larger items to rest on. Thanks for sharing!!!
Just did this one myself. One of the most cost effective setups I've seen that works well. Working from my laptop now on it! My folded down Kuat Envy bike rack makes the perfect bench to sit on while using the slide out table.
Thanks for the video! Watched it at 2pm today, got inspired on how easy you made it look! Drove to Home Depot to get my supplies and just now finished! 6pm on the dot! Thanks again
Awesome Job!!! Going to share this with my Bro-in-Law. who has a 3rd Gen. 4Runner also. Thanks for the killer clips. Live-Life-Loud!!!
Perfect for my 08 GX 470. Your design is exactly what was in my brain but yours was way more brilliant. Felt pads - HUGE! Many thanks.
This was the best and easiest to understand DIY project I’ve ever seen on CZcams. The added humor is a huge bonus! Thank you!
I made some thing similar using restaurant bus tubs as drawers just slipped them in. No brackets or slides. Works great so far. Using a drawer tool box hold other smalls.
I recently put a cargo baseplate in the back of my jeep and mounted a fridge slider to one side. I need to start building drawers one of these days soon. That slide out table you made is SICK. It's definitely got me thinking of ways i can incorporate something into whatever i end up building. Looks so handy. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching! Hope your build goes well !
Fabulous simplicity. I'm going to do this in my house also.
Nice job. An extra idea for more functional use of the table could be to use the slim spce between it and the box top/camera bag to add hinged legs to the table bottom. They could rest folded up and clipped securely out of the way for normal use, but also allow full withdrawal of the table as well for set up away from the vehicle, e.g. In a tent or as a spare.
This basic method looks perfect for our next (bigger) family rig. I love the pull out table. Thanks!
I like the sliding table idea without using actual sliders. The carpet things were smart.
That's neat! I've been toying with the idea of putting something like that in my trailer.
Im doing this for my 3rd gen right now i love the simplicity of your design thank you!
Nice, simple, functional... Thanks for taking the time to make the video and showing us how you made it.
Good simple design that doesn't use too much wood and is not overly heavy. Thanks.
Love this. So simple. I now know what I'll be making for my explorer. Thank you. I was over thinking it
I'm doing a buildout on my jeep for adventuring and I'm going to make this with sleeping platform that attaches on a hinge. Thanks for the great video and the step by step process, I took a lot of notes and can't wait to get started.
I am not a professional and I wanted exactly the same stuff to my Outlander. Your video is very informative. A lot of efforts had taken to film and also to work simultaneously.. I am gonna do it for my vvehicle soon. Thank you so much mate! Your new subscriber.
After watching your video I made a similar setup for my 2002 Nissan Xterra. I used four restaurant bus tubs for storage underneath the shelf. I have installed an old craftsman tool box with drawers on the shelf top along with some 1940 3x5, 5x10, 17" deep sliding drawer metal card file boxes for holding long tools. Made for a good handy man platform.
thanks for the inspiration I made something very similar for my subaru forester after watching this and the only thing i added was another run of aluminium angle under the slide out and slide my folding table in there as well. so all fits neatly and out of the way. thanks again
I'm always reading comments before adding mine. This is 1 time I'm happy I did. I applaud you for accepting ideas and taking advantage of the ones best for your family. Moreso not getting mad about an idea that isn't. I think just the carpet (friction) and the box on left will keep the platform from moving. Great Design!! If you did decide to put something up front, you wouldn't need a whole board just a small strip along the bottom. I had a couple of thoughts and you can accept or deny as you please. My wife teases me cuz I'm always saying what if lol. A dowell rod 3/4 in. or any size sturdy enough to do the job but set a bit lower than uprights and you could roll it in holding the back up a little then when you set it down the uprights and weight of the platform would sit flat? I think angle iron would be too heavy and I don't know if they make aluminium angle iron? Then I thought of flashing like for a roof or doorway. Doorway kind that covers the threshold, turn it upside down and the round/ domed side could help you slide it in place. Lastly I think I've over thunk this for you LMBO THANKS for sharing your talent and videos, Rodney
Thank You for making this video.
I am right in the middle of the process of making a double drawer unit in my van to hold fishing gear.
I am at a perfect point in the production of the unit, that I will be able to add a sliding plate in the morning!!!!!! .
Video was so helpful I’ve been looking into purchasing a 4 runner for camping can’t wait now so I can build one of these
I have been looking on CZcams at all the different versions of truck bed boxes. Yours is by far the best. The only difference is that I have an 8' open truck bed so I will need to really waterproof the H out of it. Thanks so much.
Great idea!! I love the way the table slides out. I was thinking stops might be nice on the table top but they don’t really seem necessary
Thanks for the great video. I followed your design to build one for my FJ Cruiser. Came out looking and working great!
Stumbled across this video, absolutely love it! Great job on the build and the video. I am going to incorporate some of your ideas in a future build I am doing. Thanks for sharing, you gave me some great ideas!
Brilliant! Thank you so much! I'm glad I found this before I spent money on drawer slides!
Nice build...simplistic and very usable for all situations of gear use!
Omg thanks sooo much I am building a bed in the back of my Subaru and wanted to add this exact type of table I just needed to see it done thanks sooo much!
Thanks for getting out the skil worm drive. Some people love them and some hate them. I love a good worm drive
Logan Patterson I noticed that too. I loved my old worm drive but it eventually died
That Coleman cooler is one of the best on the market. I’ve tested a lot for work and it really is an amazing bit of equipment.
Genius design congratulations on your adventures with your family
Awesome simple design! Thanks for sharing the idea. I'm putting this on a future project list.
I’ve been planning something like this in my head. Thank you for this
I made a variation of this today for my SWB Land Cruiser. Thanks for the motivation.
American maen are so smart and handy !!!!!!
Amazing job!
Been looking at a lot of options for my xterra, really like your design will be going with this build. Thanks for making the video.
Good simple design and even better instructional video - very practical and helpful. Thank you. Subscribed
Man, I can’t believe I’m just now following being your channel! I bought my 99 grand Cherokee a year ago and have been looking at doing a similar platform in it. Good work man!
Awesome design! Probably do the same with my 4runner. Levitt Lake is one of my favorite places to camp in the Sierras
Some good ideas I may integrate into my build when the day comes. 👍
That's great. It's given me some good ideas for my rav4. Thanks from Australia
Excellent idea. I’m going adapt this sleeping system with slide out table for a Toyota Sienna. Thanks.
That's pretty slick!
A pull-out shelf all the way across 👌
Definitely building this for my 3rd gen thanks so much
hello what a simple and good way of doing a pull out table. Brilliant. thanks
I lost that little vacuum attachment for my kreg jig. Kinda miss it now. Cool video man thanks
The pocket hole kits are such a great cheat!
I have a few of them and I was blown away at how damn clever they are.
I just watched this video and now I have sub’d. Very cool and simple table setup. It looks like another project for me to do to my 3rd gen.
unbeleivable, excellent work, this is exactly what i need to make, thank you so much for this video..
Thank you for a great video. Plan on doing the same to my 5th generation 4runner. Love the aluminum angle and felt for the tabletop👍🏻...only change I am planning is making the tabletop width a bit smaller, so I can fit between the vehicle and tabletop, but possibly adding more weight to the build since I would have to add another upright leg. I am planning to use the Kreg system, because like you I believe screwing into the plywood end has no bearing. Great work and thank you.
Well done, nice tight build. If you add corner supports you can fully extend the table slide out. 😍
Thanks for the video and write up. I’ll be building something exact for my series 100 land cruiser.
Nice build! I really like some of the details like securing the carpet with cargo tie-downs.
Also: I cried when you died in Top Gun and you were my favorite on "ER".
I’ve heard Affleck and Reynolds but this is a first for Goose. Thanks for watching!
Simple, clean but functional design.
Very nice work - clean, simple, functional. But this is why I love my 100 series LC.. already got the tailgate! 😁
Dave’s Power Bread. Yeahhhhhhh buddy! 👑
Super awesome design, I’m gonna use your slide idea for my FJ rear storage! I’ll make sure to share the video as well!
Really good work my friend!
I was looking for something like that as idea for my next car , a 1998 4Runner.
Thank you!
Finished mine today!
Looks great..especially for the 4-Runner. I have a 80 series Land Cruiser so it's nice to have the fold down deck which the 4-Runner doesn't. Looks like yours comes in handy like that.
Nice work. I need to do something similar with a fridge slide-out.
Finally this looks exactly what I want. I have a 2003 Montero and I want something that I can utilize for the full rear however since taking the 3rd row out I have a nice in floor storage that I don't want to loose so full length draw system is not what I'm looking for. I love the slide out piece of wood too. If I did this It would allow me to separate some storage bins for camping gear yet still have access to that bottom storage. Thanks!
Great job, great effort. Thanks for sharing. I'm in!
Nice. You gave me a added idea for my truck bed storage system I am going to build later. Subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Awesome video, I'm going to get started on this soon. My storage is becoming a premium QUICK with a family of 4. Subbed!
I love it. Awesome work.
Great, simple and easy to build, following the KISS principle.nice. I would also add some removable legs to the table.
Nicely done ! Really inspiring ;)
Your video really inspired me to build one for my mini van. Cool idea. Thanks
You are welcome! Post a pic of video of yours!
Nice and simple, I'm going to try build something similar for my Subaru... Thanks for sharing!
Nice efforts 👌 love ❤from India 🇮🇳 👏
Well done bro, as we say in my town ARRECHISIMO... simple, strong, and funtional...
Love the simple design. Great video. Subscribed! 👍
Thank you! Very good idea, and very easy to make, planning make one of this for my patrol y61!
Wonderful!
and....loved the frozen pineapple.
Great build! Thanks for the inspiration!
Awesome!! Great one!!!
Great job . That’s a genius design
Great idea, going to use this for my van. Well done
Awesome build im going to use this if i ever build a van!
Thank you! I actually followed a video built a drawer, it works great, but it just added too much weight to the vehicle. This one definitely reduced a lot of weight.
Love it! I wish I was as handy as you! I didn't read all of the comments (too many) so this might have already been suggested, but the only suggestion I had was to add L-shaped trim piece along the front top of the whole rack where the carpet is to kind of cinch it down to the wood itself. Think of it like a transition strip for carpeting in a house. This would keep the carpet from peeling up at the highest traction area where you're sliding things in and out. Also, I just subscribed!
Hay thanks for the sub! That’s not a bad idea. It does pull up when i slide stuff in.
Hello my fellow Nevadan!! I am currently on the hunt for a jeep xj or wj to start doing some overlanding stuff! Your video is definitely some inspiration!
Good to hear Matt! See you on the trail!
Handy system and nicely put together video.
Nice dude! I love it! Subscribed. Thank you for sharing
Gotta cherish that adventure time with the kids. Great video! Just Subscribed!
Very simple compact and convenient
Thank you. Will try your table idea !
Good luck!
ah Sonora Pass!! Thanks for the entertaining video and thoughtful design
I'm so inspired. 👍😊
Stratchets! I love them. Good vid
Nice and simple
Good job.
Going to adapt this style of platform to my FJ80. My ears perked up at Sonora pass. I’m out of the Central Valley around Stockton.
