FILM DESCRIPTION:
Alexander Payne's seriocomic The Descendants, an adaptation of the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, stars George Clooney as Matt King, a middle-age Hawaiian who runs a trust responsible for millions of dollars worth of untouched real estate that has been passed down to him and various cousins. He is preparing to sell the area, and make millions for everyone in the trust, when his wife suffers severe head trauma during a boat race. As he attempts to get her affairs in order, he learns that she had been having an affair. With his two daughters in tow, along with his oldest daughter's doofus boyfriend, Matt sets off to confront the man who made him a cuckold. Beau Bridges, Judy Greer, and Robert Forster co-star. I don't blame her for being mad at her mother for what she did.
Me neither.
No matter how hard you try to hide the fact that you are having an affair, you will always get caught no matter what you do to hide it from your loved ones!
One of the worst pain one can give to their partners and loved ones when they are committed
Cheaters should be dumped

people are missing the main point: what an amazing actress. thats real skill
If the acting is all we think about then it eliminates the entire point of the great acting!
@@JesseTheGameDev what else you want to judge her bye her looks
@@thewolverine8414 By the plot of the movie maybe? Lmao.
@@liavhanegbi2729 What? You’re judging the actress for the plot of the movie? ...Do you know how movies work?
@@tatum2739 You clearly didn’t understand my comment. Try again maybe?
People don't understand that cheating hurts the children just as much as the spouse. It shatters their whole world and changes their perspective about relationships. They are torn between both sides and the hurt and pain stays with them. They think,' if the person I love and trust can do something so awful to the other person I love and trust. ' Then who if anyone can be trusted? Can I even trust that parent? They aren't who I thought they were.
Additionally, if this is done societally as a sort of blasé norm, then it leads to a breakdown of trust and love within a society; as we can now evidently see. As historical precedent shows, it destroys society and ultimately ruins the future prospects and prosperity of one's children and grandchildren. Marital Infidelity should be considered a crime because it is far more destructive and dangerous to the security and long-term stability of the homeland than any invading army or foreign terror group. As you have identified superbly above, its destruction is multigenerational and leaves a long-lasting psychological scar that destroys the demography of the nation, hence its future military, economic, and social potential.
The only reason I can fathom that this has been promoted and sanctioned so heavily by the government and the media, by it having no visible legal consequences, is summed up by the third law of Robert Conquest’s "Three Laws of Politics".
"The behavior of any bureaucratic organization can best be understood by assuming that it is controlled by a secret cabal of its enemies."
😢 it’s the worst pain ever and I’m glad this movie addresses it
Cheaters don't care. Cheating is an inherently selfish action. There is no way to rationally sit down with a pro/con list for cheating and ever think it's a good idea if you consider anyone else but you for even a second. If they do think of the consequences, the intoxication and "butterflies" of the affair quickly lead to rationalizations such as they'll never find out, they'll forgive me, they won't divorce because of the children, etc., etc.
We know children suffer massively from divorce -- unless the husband gets custody. Nearly all metrics (graduation rates, drug usage, teen pregnancy, high school drop out rates, rate of sexual abuse, etc.) skyrocket for single moms. Obviously the spouse suffers. Grandparents suffer as they don't see their grandchildren as often or have to face friends who know their son/daughter ruined a marriage. Siblings, friends, coworkers, etc. and such can suffer from not wanting to be near you or the children -- no one wants their spouses being friends with cheaters. Their AP families might suffer. Obviously if married or having children, but also their parents, siblings, and extended family -- who wants to be close to a homewrecker. The amount of hurt is almost limitless.
@@ClarifyEht The worst, really? I mean I'm sure it's awful but ''the worst''? Have you even lived, do you know how awful people suffer - clinical depression, cancer, losing loved ones, war, alzheimer, all kinds of disease and disasters and betrayals - and you still think it's the ''worst'', even as an adult when you should finally understand it was not about you at all?
@@BW022 Your ''statistics'' is a bunch of crap. First of all, divorce does NOT necessarily lead to single Moms, most divorced parents co-parent just fine. Secondly, most children from divorce adapt to new reality just well and are not worse off than their peers from ''full families''. Most adults find a way to communicate. Of course there is hurt - but ''limitless''? Listen, I am a child of divorce (and I am glad it happened because that was right) and I also buried loved ones AND I have clinical depression AND my country is being invaded so I know what limitless pain is, many people do (for different reasons) and THIS is not it. Divorce is painful but not the end of the world - in fact for many it turns out to be a blessing in disguise.
Imagine falling in love, getting married, having kids, spending all those years together and then finding out that you got played. That must be devastating. I pity such people man. Relationships are really complicated, if you have your guard up then the relationship turns toxic and if you trust too much then you put yourself in a vulnerable position where you can get cheated on. I personally know someone who had a great relationship, everytime I met them it felt like they were meant for each other and later I found out that the dude cheated on his then girlfriend. You never know man, people can't be trusted.
Everyone in a relationship is different, some find their true loves and spend their entire lives together. Others lose that spark over a decade and decide to do something terrible. People can't be trusted all the time, but it doesn't mean closing yourself off is the best solution. Life's all about risks. The next day could be your last and we try to live it the best we can. Maybe the person we meet may not be the one, but it's better to know and feel the pain than never know it at all.
Honestly it's better to talk to your partner get a divorce than cheat during the relationship. The trauma of betrayal is very deep
@@kashifreza1993 divorce is hard, cheating on an extremely busy spouse is the easiest thing in the world. No surprise what people pick.
@@shihoblade I get what you're saying, but yeah, the easiest choices aren't always the right ones and vice versa.
@@shihoblade It also puts the cheaters in the lowest bracket of people that lives. Seriously, how was Shailene NOT nominated for this?
She was nominated for a Golden Globe but I agree that she should had an Oscar nod as well.
She deserved it FAR more than Melissa McCarthy did n Bridesmaids.

@@bxbxb1_554 I didn't say who was the best actor. I said Clooney was acting his heart out.

"Chances are, that dirty little mind of yours in there is just as naughty as the mind of your partners … but maybe neither of you have ever felt like you've known how to share those intimacies with one another," Woodley added. "The more surrendered we can be to the discoveries we make with a lover, the better and more delicious our physical connection becomes. Don't be afraid to say what you really want. Shailene Woodley is a fantastic actress. I actually almost believed that this WASN'T acting. When you're as skilled and gifted an actor as her, you have the ability to actually make your audience BELIEVE or almost believe that you aren't acting and that it's all real!
She's also great in Divergent. I couldn't care less about the Divergent series, and the movies (and the production of the last movie) are a complete shit show, but that's not her fault. She still brings it. I just hope she can get casted in more successful films, even though she's kind of under the radar. Seriously, she's great! She deserves more credit!

Just saw the clip, and I think I might just go ahead and watch the movie. They're both incredible here. I got a conflicted vibe from Clooney. He doesn't want to go back on his original position, that she should make amends with her mother, but the information makes him want to go back on it.

I love seeing George Clooney and Shailene Woodley, getting emotional in this scene, and seeing them together as Father-Daughter.
She gets me teary-eyed in every movie where she cries. Crying is her acting super-power.
Anyone who thought George Clooney is a stale actor - this should change their minds. And Shailene Woodley? Wow.
Dave Millet He can have great moments, in many movies he just coasts on his sex God, suave movie star persona. He's good in this and great in Michael Clayton.

she’s way too young… should def watch eyes wide shut
0:10 - 0:16 Shailene displays such subtlety in her delivery. Amazing acting.
Lemme tell you from experience, there is nothing as devastating and chaotic as feeling extreme love and care and worry and hate and disgust for the same person, as a human you’re not suppose to feel all these things at the same time, your sanity kinda crumbles
Damn this hits home a lot... when I had the same experience, I don't know which part was the most painful; hiding it from my dad or telling him the truth... parents, please think about your children too before you decide to do something stupid...
Perfect acting. Perfect writing. Perfect movie that stays with you years later
Shailene was robbed of an Oscar nomination. She was phenomenal in the film.
This was first time i discovered shailene woodley underrated actress. George Clooney great as always.
Shay is a beautiful actress
very good acting of her, props. This was acctually very raw and real... This felt like a conversation you would witness between your sibling and your dad
Excellent acting in this scene, am particularly impressed by George Clooney at 1:40 and 2:00. To convey so much with so little, very impressive.
What a great actress, shit. I need to check this movie out.
Cheating is disgusting. If you aren't happy in your relationship just leave (unless it's abusive, then I get why it isn't that easy).
My mom cheated on my dad and she still denies reality. I was mad and confronted her for it and it was ugly. But she still denies it.
Narcissists will never accept responsibility and, therefore, never take accountability for their actions because they are never in the wrong. They can't be. They are perfect afterall.
@@GGReyes-oc3kp By that logic most women are narcissists because most father's aren't the biological sires of their children and some live and die without ever finding out .I know from personal experience.
The reason I say most father's is because the stats say 30% of men aren't the father but most men don't test the children and only the mother knows the paternity and will lie to her grave on who the father is
Very few daughters confront their mothers about their cheating. Respect for doing that. For most, the ''sisterhood'' is way too strong, usually because their mothers drilled it subtly into their heads at a young age.
I miss seeing her on the screen she’s such a phenomenal actress her emotions are always on point

U do u I guess ,but don't say that the kids don't have the right to have negative feelings when such things happen .
And I bid u adieu
How can stuff like this be "none of your business" as a child when your parents cheat on each other ?
Short story, my parents divorced back when i was 10 and our mother always made us believe that it was mostly our fathers fault back then.
Me and my other siblings used to believe her and i despised my dad for almost a decade, never wanted to visit him, didn't really trust him...
Only to find out 13 years later by my stepdad when he broke up with my mother that she used to cheat on my dad alot with multiple men during their marriage back when we were kids. Even more messed up stuff, that i don't want to type here.
So I guess i don't need to tell you, how something like this can mess with you mentally, so how can you just say "it's none of your business" ?

This is the movie that made me suspend my notion of George Clooney’s celebrity. Seeing him in a one size too large polo, shorts, and flip flops with salt and pepper hair and giving such a great performance made for such a great movie.
