Charlie wasn't staring him down and this was a more respectful battle of fun than anything else. Charlie is a respectful host but Dave, also respectful, decided to just follow Benante's lead. These are the best kind of drum-duets because it's not about out-doing the other drummer. It's about seeing if you can quickly build up something truly incredible with genuine chemistry. My 2 cents on this anyway.

The whole reason blast beats exist in metal is totally down to one of the guys on stage, and the reason we have mega fast double bass drumming is because of the other, these are truly the most pivotal players in the development of extreme metal, and some younger drummers out there don't have any idea of it.

Gar was a "Praying Mantis" behind the drums. Dude had such a swagger to his playing. It looked as if he was hardly moving when they played live. He played some of the fastest jazz/metal beats ever laid to vinyl!!! Any one that questions that, should have a listen to Killing is my Business, or Peace Sells. Gar had such a finesse and blended his playing in so well, sometimes you would lose him in the surrounding rhythms. His timing with the other instruments was that good.
