When you don't have to look at your drums to play, but keep your eyes closed and become one with music, he has attained musical bliss - so much admiration for how much this man loves music and drums, Slayer lost one of the best and I'll always consider him the Godfather of fitting music together perfectly. I salute you Dave, thank you for all the years of headbanging from your beats. You are #1.
Most people in this comment section talking about soloing drum skills (rudiments, chops, double strokes, etc.) without realizing one thing: even if those set of skills were already being used in jazz, funk and gospel (which comparing drummers from those genres to Dave is just absurd), when Lombardo came to the (metal) scene, his style of playing was unheard of at the time. There was a guy that had the same level of skill in both hands and feet and could use them musically to elevate a song in it's majority and not just for filler. Take into consideration this happened before Death Metal or Black Metal were even born...genres that of course were inspired in any sorts of ways by Dave Lombardo's playing style. That's why he's the Godfather, and even now with all the years of carreer both behind and ahead of him, he's still one of the fittest and tightest drummers out there today (for a cringe worthy example of the opposite, please see Lars Ulrich). The guy could or can follow rules from other musical ventures, but really he doesn't need to...he created some of those rules to begin with.
Exactly! he's also a left handed guy who plays right handed drumset... he alwys starts his fast double bass passages with the left foot :) ...and moreover, I don't know any other metal drummer who regularly plays with guys like John Zorn or Bill Laswell - those guys don't give shit about your fame, they need a complete and versatile musician...
Triggers aren't what people think. U still need the speed and more so precision w/ triggers. They are certainly NOT a trick, or an easy way around double bass.
@@christopherchesaux3554 But...if you set up the triggers a certain way, you don't need to hit as hard or as consistently hard. Which is why you see a lot of drummers doing that and setting up the beaters with very short movement to the bass drum head. That type of technique is generally frowned upon. Kollias triggers, but he also keeps the beaters far back from the head---no cheating there. But when you're playing 250+bpm 16ths, you really have to trigger. Dave never plays anywheres near that fast, and has ridiculously strong & consistent feet, so he doesn't need to use triggers live.
Watching Dave play gives me goosebumps on my arms. Truth. I'm a drummer of 35 years, and this guy is forever is my mentor of whom I've never met. Thank you Dave Lombardo for your inspiring and incredible drumming that has captivated me as a drummer my entire life. Thank you man
A great drummer in the shadow of a great band. He’s not valued at the same level as Slayer, but sometimes Dave is somehow greater then Slayer! Love this guy and his personality.
In my eyes slayer wouldnt have that iconic sound without lombardo.but honestly hes not in the shadow of that band.i like him more in suicidal tendicies
Lol the cymbals arnt bad either.the rude series cymbals(used by lombardo and joey jordison and a few other big names) will blow ya ear drums out from the depth of sound they have.which is great for heavy rock or metal genre music
@@johnmcdonough4676 I guess lol isn't that what commercial is about. lol Ya I know what u mean they have the best Ride the power Ride or the dry Ride by Paiste and Zildjian to they make good cymbals. They sound so crisp and sharp
Back in the late 90's I used to hang out with cannibal corpse in tampa fl. On one of the Slayer tours they stopped by and hanged out and we got an improptu show with the 15 people there. It was awesome. Being that up close. R.I.P Jeff he was terror on the guitar.
Kit sounds awesome - love the cymbals especially that right China! Enjoy Dave's playing and he has amazing double bass sound. Great solid solo. David Curtis Drumming

Thank you Dave, you are the dream of any bassplayer, a drummer that plays with all his heart, and enjoys every tick from the metronome, the guy always improvised in slayer, on tour, not 2 songs came back with the same guitar licks nor bass Lines, things,
My all time favorite! Soppy disgusting deranged herky jerky chaotic with the most control of Any drummer on Earth! Dave Lombardo sir you are the reason for being a drummster I am this day! Your videos should get us to remember who's the best. Thank you man!
It's crazy that in the '80s they were considered a satanic band and after all these years they are just humble guys that are just trying to make a living with all the awesome Talent they have. Whenever I come across a Dave Lombardo video I'm clicking to support him.
no triggers...amazing the depth you can get when you rely on skill, power, feeling, and hit placement - always will be one of my biggest influences on playing
This guy right here, you read every comment section on every video hes feature almost to a unanimous recognition and yet he does not receive all the recognition he deserves, now go watch again the video and tell me hes not right up there with the greats

More reason to respect the pure talent in one foot then many famous drummers. Any band any type of music his signature drum styles stick out, a testament to his enormous talent.
Dave is a legend! And like someone already said his while set up sounds great but that's the snare sound I am looking for. You guys know what snare he's using? What wood it's made from? The Tama ALP G-walnut is a nice sounding snare and in my price range too! Thanks for the video Paiste!!
We had Neal Peart from RUSH. Then we had Dave Lombardo. I would've given anything to see a drum solo with both of them in it. Same time on the stage. Talk about drum epicness!!!!
@Carlos Loera exactly, the Art Blakely of Metal! Art Blakey is the pioneer of Be Bop Jazz that set a completely new standard that Jazz drummers still build on today. Drumming might have evolved since then, but it all wouldn't have been possible without the pioneers. Respect the pioneers because they are the originators that changed history!
Always knew Lombardo was a hell of a drummer, but this shows just how much of a virtuoso he is. One of the finest drum solo I've ever seen. I suggest Mario Duplantier' solos too.
Just like with Bonham's "Moby Dick", I can do most of that but I Can't put it together flawlessly as those two monsters did. Thank you for being an inspiration Dave. If you had a symbol on your kick drum as John did, I would respectfully tat it on my other shoulder.
The dime bag Darryl of drummers. Super nice guy, no ego, having a good time, willing to teach and help anyone out. Love Dave!
I guess that made Dimebag Darryl the Lombardo of guitarists. 🤔
@@richmoreno9938 damn... that didn't even cross my mind tbh lol

How can you NOT love Dave Lombardo.
He cut a path for MANY to follow.
As a jazz fan and drummer I really appreciate Dave Lombardo, he's so musically
Dave's a thrash drummer and can only be judged by thrash standards. Oh wait. He created the thrash standard. . . .
him, and Charlie Benante
Lee raush...
They just Updated what Simon phillips and Lesbinks did .
With less swing .
Except for lee raush .
Garry Moloney of Discharge.
You are right. Dave is the best by any standards and he did as an originator in music.
he is not just a thrash metal metal drummer, watch him perfrom other solos he can do much more cool stuff
Dave Lombardo, Simply put, The absolute best metal drummer on the planet.... He's an all around phenomenal drummer period!
This is more like a warm up for Dave, seeing him live is where you understand his power
Giant facts. It's a sight.

Yep, you pretty much summed everything up. :)
Always liked the fact he doesn’t rely on triggers for his Kick work. Great velocity in all foot notes played.
Thing is when you play fast double bass without triggers it starts to sound muddy
jonny j Thats true, I play at faster tempos so I’m just saying that double bass gets muddy from experience.
The only thing is to be strong enough to kick the Bass drum and do not need triggers

Dave's real strength lays in his choices behind the kit in the songs. I always loved the way he tunes too. His drums always have raw sound.

The double sounds triggered

This does not give justice to Dave s power; watch him play live and you will get the energy of power drumming of this beast
