Beauty standards are becoming more universal as the world becomes increasingly "global". The main issue is what the research is based on. The "golden ratio" was created through Greek beauty standards and then used on different ethnicities. Their was a recently a ranking of the most beautiful women and most of the top ranked women were white. The defense was that scientist used the golden ratio, but the golden ratio wasn't meant for non Greek or Euro features. African women aren't inherently less attractive than European women but "science" and "research" would suggest otherwise.

      @johnstones9626 Pƙed 4 lety +330

This is a golden comment. One cannot infer on cross-culture agreements about beauty standards in today's or even yester-year's world. The world has been globalized for over centuries, and the beauty standards of European culture (through dominance of media and colonialization) is masqueraded as the universal standard. In other words, universal beauty standards would mean an INNATE standard in humans (LMAO). In an absence of societal influences, beauty is likely subjective. The scientific references made in this video give little justifications for the claim made in the video. It is unfortunate that the sciences will eventually replace religious conjectures that it so criticizes. Making it hard to distinguish between true practice of science and scientism.

I was always envious of it, but then when I got a bit older (about 20) people started to compliment me about my jaw, saying that it was masculine. I learned to accept it and now I like the fact that I have a wide jaw. It’s just crazy how different the standards are tho, and how much it can shape perception

Some people like people with certain “imperfections” that may not meet beauty/cultural standards. @@jessicamappless4024 No, race doesn't fit in there at all. It is just used by people who *feel* unattractive to blame and accuse whoever *they* find attractive to not like them back. Seriously. Beauty is found everywhere and each nation/ race has their own opinion about what's attractive and often it is the exotic they like. But are there some things that are generally true? Yes. A straight, slim nose will always be more beautiful than a crooked one or a bulbous one or a very wide one or a flat one with very little bone to it. That just simply is. Does it mean all people with wide noses or bulbous noses or flat noses are ugly? Of course not! You can be very pretty with a bulbous nose. You *might* be prettier with a slim one but then who is perfect anyways. The trick is to be able to accept that there are features that are universally considered beautiful and that one might not have all of them and not get offended. It just simply is. Roses are usually considered one of the most beautiful flowers. Does it mean a daisy is ugly? Of course not. Does it mean we only want roses and despise the daisy? Of course not. And luckily we are allowed to admire the rose without the daisy getting offended by it. Most of us humans are no roses. Only a few are so breathtakingly beautiful and why not admire them without feeling less ourselves? Daisies are lovely, pansies are lovely, all kinds of flowers are. With roses only the world would be dull, indeed.

The Age of Instagram Face - "There was something strange, I said, about the racial aspect of Instagram Face-it was as if the algorithmic tendency to flatten everything into a composite of greatest hits had resulted in a beauty ideal that favored white women capable of manufacturing a look of rootless exoticism. “Absolutely,” Smith said. “We’re talking an overly tan skin tone, a South Asian influence with the brows and eye shape, an African-American influence with the lips, a Caucasian influence with the nose, a cheek structure that is predominantly Native American and Middle Eastern.” Did Smith think that Instagram Face was actually making people look better? He did. “People are absolutely getting prettier,” he said. “The world is so visual right now, and it’s only getting more visual, and people want to upgrade the way they relate to it.” - Interesting read from the New Yorker By Jia Tolentino December 12, 2019

I thought the golden ration was just about how the facial features are set up and face shape, but it's also the dept and sizes of the features which I find unfair because it leans heavily to white people and not other race. The nose in the golden ration is especially the most unfair and eurocentric. imo the nose is one the biggest indicator that makes someone look a certain race cause there is more overlap with skin color, face shape, the way the features are set up and eye sizes but noses are more unique with each race, both in the front and the side of the nose. it kinda make sense too that it's the most unique feature imo cause that's where we breathe through lol and prehistoric humans were in very different type of environments from one another.

I disagree. Iman Bowie (90s supermodel) is pure Somalian and is beautiful by any standards. I'm not sure about the mix Naomi Campbell must have genetically, but I think anyone will agree on how stunning she is. Aishwarya Rai is one of the most beautiful people I've ever seen. Lupita Nyong'o, from 12 years of slavery, is beautiful too. Beauty is international. I think attractiveness goes beyond beauty, and that's why I think there's always going to be that dispute with these types of videos talking about attractiveness when really we're talking about beauty. I have been attracted to typically "ugly" people, and it has more to do with their presence and what they represent than only their beauty.

    •  Pƙed 4 lety +31

@@guesswho5790 I think people are misunderstanding the real issue here. Lupita Nyong'o, Iman Bowie, ... may be beautiful by European standards. But would they be seen as beautiful in any society/tribe around the world? This is the real issue.
European standards of beauty can be applied to people of any ethnicity. But it doesn't mean that every culture would judge beauty with the same criteria as European culture.

    • @guesswho5790
      @guesswho5790 Pƙed 4 lety +4

@ I differentiate true beauty from "beauty standards". What I meant by my comment is that when someone is drop dead gorgeous... It's not a secret. There are things that everybody can agree on. And I did not specify width of nose, skin color or anything like that. As long as a face has proportionate, symmetrical features, there is a high chance they will be considered beautiful. I once heard a guy say that he didn't find Rihannah attractive because he didn't like her nose and I was like... Boy you wish! She is very beautiful I don't care what he says. That's his preference and bias and covert racism.
But I agree that there are "beauty standards" that are imposed in a specific culture in a specific time and place. And they bring up a whole other discussion because it usually involves the body, and I was mainly referring to facial structures. A very clear example is the old Chinese tradition of having higher class ladies bond their feet... It was horrifying and yet in time it was considered attractive because they associated it with power and wealth. Or that tribe in Africa Jessica Simpson visited where obese brides were considered attractive. None of these things are beautiful, at least to me, because they are unhealthy, but it made sense to them, in their time. Just like now inflated, fake everything, corseted waists and stretched out facial skin (lest we have an expression line, God forbid), are today's Instagram standards, then you have the fitness ideal body, then you have fashion runway "beauty", and still there are girls who don't fit into any of these molds and I find them extremely beautiful and attractive, and surely won't be alone in that.
Edit: sorry for the loooong comment!!

The golden ratio it's not something that has been created, it's a mathematical equation that is found in every symmetrical thing created by nature (flowers, shells, trees...). What scientists did is apply that to the human face to find the most perfectly proportionate face possible, not the most attractive. People got the idea that, just because it's proportionate, it has to be the ideal of beauty, and even though more proportionate faces than average are considered the most attractive, those faces still have certain imperfections as it is impossible to have the exact measurements as the perfect ratio naturally.
With that I should add that east Africans have also a very similar face proportions to the Golden ratio, yet they are black. The same with middle easterns.

This might sound weird but I read an article several years ago (unfortunately I cannot find a reference) that stated that the modern fashion industry had changed the view on what's considered classical feminine features. The face of a model today has more masculine features: strong jaw lines and bone structures and the bodies are skinny, flat small asses, narrow hips, no chest etc. The theory was that the fashion industry employs a high ratio of homosexual men (very generalizing!) who are not attracted to female features and promotes younger boyish looking features in female models. True or not, Victoria secrets models have pretty faces but you can't really call them feminine in a classical sence. And their bodies are not very feminine either. I believe cnon western cultures still celebrate classical feminine features, the one evolution choose for us to survive.

Then there are "cute" aesthetically pleasing jaws. Then there are universally ugly recessed jaws. Most poeple like a combination of "aesthetically pleasing" and "sexually appealing" features.

I'm 6'2", have white skin and brown hair. My eyes are icy blue so I'm a basic Icelandic person. Still many of my favorite looking girls happen to be of mixed race like Zendaya. It's very common to be attracted to what you don't possess yourself. My point is that we NEED diversity. I'm very ''conventionally attractive'' but if all the women looked like me with similar features then I would lose all my interest in women, so boring! Some call it flaws but we need diversions from the norm. Show me your freckles, gap teeth, ununiform complexion and curly hair and I will be incapable of resisting you.
Girls here on CZcams hate when I say that I love when girls use minimal makeup and/or go for a natural look. I appreciate good makeup like I do a nice painting but I don't wanna kiss a painting. Wear your imperfections with pride and it will drive guys like me crazy. Actually there are studies showing that people have a hard time evaluating whether other races are attractive or not, because they haven't yet been "told" what the "benchmark" for beauty is among that race. You seem very defensive with people who bring up race, for some reason lol.

    interesting video!
do you think the studies results are majorly influenced by war propaganda of strong/secure looking men and obedient/emotional looking women in the western world? especially after spreading over the media and internet for other cultures to pick up?
especially wondering about that since european beauty standarts for a long time have been what we consider feminine for men.
also, are you planning to go beyond biological facts in future videos? i dont mean cultural viewpoints, i mean aesthetical composition. you're obviously smart, and i'd be sad to see that wasted on just recounting biological basics already mentioned in other videos. i think taking it a step further and exploring humanities big brain skills would be great! i hope you won't let it sit on 'ugly features are cute' because that is an oversimplification that missed the mark by far.

Something that bothered me is how some people call poc who don't have stereotypical features as having white features. I'm not talking about white passing poc, that's a different topic but I'm talking about simply poc who don't have stereotypical features of their race but they still look like their race. A lot of the times people who say that think they're enlighten or woke but it's little ironic, cause why do they revolve it around white people and they lowkey believe white people are the default or they have the neutral features. I don't see that many people saying that a white person look like a poc, it likes they gave white people privilege to be diverse in their features more than poc.

When presented with two choices like in your examples, I usually find the less masculine man more attractive (though I'm sure on a broader scale my preference would be somewhere in the middle). I think because in my mind it corresponds with a kinder, more emotionally open and agreeable person (this is obviously not true, but it subconsciously signals it to me). I grew up with a very masculine looking type A alpha male who was controlling and made my mother miserable, so I think I'm seeking the opposite.

That's because beauty is influenced by society. If I society deems a certain way too look is beautiful then the great majority will pick that type of face. The world is increasingly global and European standard of beauty is what is the most broadcasted to us . Let's not present that's not a thing. In the early 2010's when Leonardo DiCaprio and Giselle Bundchen visited some secluded tribe in Brazil. The tribesmen were as sked if they found them beautiful and all them responded by saying they were ugly. Yet these two people in western society were deemed as universally beautiful.

Science says, the best "face" for someone is actually, the aggregate of all the faces he/she has seen in their life. The "average" face. Thats because, the average individual of a society is usually a healthy individual. The odd one out must be different, because of a deformity.
In fact, if you approach an infant, with a vampire mask or a scream mask, they won't cry. Thats because they're still taking in all the faces around them, and they don't know what is a healthy face, and what is a diseased face. These infants finally learn this by the age of three years.
So... A good looking face is not decided because the "society" taught the kids. The kids look around and decide for themselves. They learn by themselves, what is healthy and what is not.
      Small difference.

    • @dithaingampanmei

Bradd Pitt is known as sex-symbol, but look closely and...meh, could've been better. Scarlett Johansson recently being called super hot, but again her face is plain avarage. It's their deamenor and represantation that makes them attractive.
So I think all those beauty standarts and "top 10, ratings etc" are just another way to make people feel bad and insecure.

You seem to be overlooking the cause of beauty ideals, not just being from inborn natural preferences, but also developed from early cultural conditioning.
All beauty is subjective, by definition.
(and by "subjective" I mean dependent on an individual subject, and not existing independent from our perception, even if all individual shared the identical beauty preference.)
Whether my attraction to a certain aesthetic quality/feature is instinctually hereditary, or conditioned socially, it doesn't necessarily change the fact of my preference. And I may be perfectly fine with that.
But it may be more significant to recognize the cause and nature of our beauty preferences, especially on a societal level, but even individually to be self aware so we may have a healthier relation to our personal relation to our own and others' bodies.

I think if you’re going to generalize studies to all people or all women, you should cite ones that actually had diverse samples. For example, the Holzleitner and Perrett (2017) paper specifically excluded all people who were not white and only recruited women who are cisgendered and prominently were attracted to men. That is not a sample representative of all women in the United States and certainly not in all the world. If you’re going to make the point that culture doesn’t matter and some traits are universally considered beautiful, it’s best to cite papers that have a sample representative enough to justify that claim.

Fun fact: generally speaking, we as humans find pugs cute because of something called "epimeletic behavior" which is the instinct to nourish and protect puppies. It works on most mammals, even between different species, because all puppies share some common characteristics such as a bigger head in comparison to body, bigger skull in comparison to muzzle/face, big round eyes and soft, round features in general. Young dogs have rounder and shorter muzzles than adult dogs, pugs and similar breeds retain those features even growing up and we like them because they remind us of babies.

There is a point to bringing race into every discussion. Your videos do display information that includes universal standards, but your slideshow examples are NOT racial inclusive. All of the pictures chosen are predominately of people that could pass the archaic "paper bag test" from early American segregation times.
Your videos are logical, but showing examples of more people in the African diaspora can further prove that these are universal standards. Black people often have completely different feature shapes outside of the mainstream beauty standards, but showing a lot more examples of us who apply would add depth to your videos.

Since you're eventually gonna talk about east asia beauty standard. I wanted to say that in asia, most high fashion asian models are considered ugly. There are few cases like Tao Okamoto who is featured in this video and is considered pretty but not a good example of their beauty standard, she's a little too angular and masculine for a woman in their eyes. Their top actors are more accurate--and not talking about asian americans/international asian actors, they also find them ugly. Only actors that started their career in mainland asia or mainly based in asia then later transition to hollywood that are considered goodlooking like Daniel Wu and Claudia Kim. I can't think of any asian american hollywood based actor they find goodlooking. There was even a hot topic about this with simu liu(asian american actor) who will star in a marvel movie, Chinese people were saying he wasn't handsome enough and that westerners like a specific "asian look".
Here few actors considered to be the most good looking in Asia: (imo Kim Tae-hee & Won bin are the epitome)
women: Song Hye Kyo, Liu Yifei, Kim Tae Hee, Ishihara Satomi and Haruka Ayase
men: Won Bin, Toshiro Mifune, Yang Yang, Hu Ge, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Haruma Miura
