  • In today's video, RPG Ranked presents: Breath of the Wild is better than Tears of the Kingdom.
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are both widely considered to be masterpieces and two of the greatest games of all time. However, the popular opinion is that Tears of the Kingdom is the vastly superior game-but to me? I just simply cannot agree. Its disheartening to see one of my favorite Zelda games constantly tech demo for a game I personally like less... Now it's time for me to get knee-deep in controversy in today's video... Breath of the Wild is better than Tears of the Kingdom!
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    1:40 Atmosphere
    4:33 Combat
    6:06 Music
    7:35 Towers
    11:16 Characters
    17:56 World

    27:29 Dungeons
    34:30 Abilities
    39:48 Shrines
    49:25 Outro
    A snapshot of the video:
    Dungeons - 6 vs 9
This might be my most controversial opinion on this list, I thought the Divine Beasts were a bit better than the "traditional dungeons" in Tears of the Kingdom. I love elemental temples in Zelda games, but they were getting slightly stale. While Divine Beasts weren't perfect, I admire them for trying something new! Also, Tears of the Kingdom dungeons still have the Diving Beast terminal system, so they weren't exactly "traditional dungeons." While the boss fights in Tears of the Kingdom were exponentially better, they have absolutely no plot relevance, unlike the Blight Ganons. Finishing the Divine Beasts just felt so much more consequential than finishing the temples, and they felt like a very novel idea for a Zelda game. Beating the dungeons actually had an impact on defeating Calamity Ganon; beating the dungeons had very little impact on defeating Ganondorf. I'm not saying I wanted the Divine Beasts to come back, but I think Tears of the Kingdom could have done something even more unique! But even more important than all of that? Breath of the Wild had the best Hyrule Castle in the series... and Tears of the Kingdom had the worst Hyrule Castle in the series. Tears of the Kingdom's was just an enormous downgrade from Breath of the Wild's, to the point where I felt like I must've been missing something. Without the Guardians to put up a fight and without the very unique weapons scattered throughout, Tears of the Kingdom just had a very drab Hyrule Castle, which was incredibly sad. Overall, as one of the few people who loved the Divine Beasts, I give Breath of the Wild dungeons a 9 and Tears of the Kingdom's dungeons a 6.
    Shrines - 6 vs 9
This is the main reason I wanted to write this article-I needed to talk about how much better I liked the shrines in Breath of the Wild over Tears of the Kingdom. The only thing that holds the Breath of the Wild shrines back from being at a ten are the awful apparatus shrines, but there aren't that many of them, so it is not a big deal! Anyway, I digress. The majority of shrine puzzles in Tears of the Kingdom are either 1) a ____ device or 2) shrines where you build not-so-interesting things with Ultrahand. I do think the proving grounds shrines are fantastic though! But they are still not as good as Trial of the Sword or Eventide Island... and also, unlike most people, I loved the Test of Strength shrines so... yeah, always looked forward to those! There were so many unique ideas with each of the runes in Breath of the Wild and in Tears of the Kingdom? It was almost always based around only Ultrahand. Also, in Breath of the Wild, we get fantastic shrine quests like riding deer, shooting arrow into the sky, sneaking around Kakariko, and best of all? Kass's quests. Tears of the Kingdom just feels so wrong without Kass. Instead of Kass? We get the abominable Sky Crystals, which are so much more boring than Breath of the Wild's shrine quests. While about 25% of the Shrine Quests in Tears of the Kingdom are still solid, the rest are pretty terrible... whereas I can't think of a single bad shrine quest in Breath of the Wild. And some may say "well, there are orbs in Breath of the Wild, why can't Tears of the Kingdom have Sky Crystals?" Well, those orbs had really cool sidequests to go along with them-I would've been totally fine with the Sky Crystals if they had cool quests with them too! Overall, I give the Tears of the Kingdom shrines a 6 and the Breath of the Wild shrines a 9.

Also cmon. Link isnt bob the builder dude. Does it not feel out of character? Ultrahand shouldve been like a combat ability or something. Link is a warrior. A dude who has to be light on his feet. Whats cooler? "The great warrior scaled the wall with insane speed and stamina barely making it to the top of the ledge, paraglided down past many enemies who he propeller attacked, then drop attacked the puzzle button" or...."link hoverbiked over the bad guys, built a ladder then glued it to the wall, then dropped a ball on a puzzle button from 30ft away"...then he literally did a baby puzzle and put triangles in triangle holes and squares in square holes....oooo

@@Thatgamergeek link is not as much a self insert character as people like to believe they just dont have to hire a voice actor if they make him not talk and then get ths convenience of the silent hero.
Bc link is extremely visually distinct and he is short and no one wants to play as a short guy w girly hair and he is broke and not chasing women. So he in no way represents the average guy like a studio ghibli is for girls.
There is one specific kindof guy that would relate a lot to link. Just bc you can stand on a box or make a wall doesnt mean youre link any more than any other game thats ever been made where you can "make choices".
This is also the game that has the least about of personality from link meaning the whole game is really out of character for link and it is designed that way so in a way youre correct but youre correct about a bad decision.
At that point why not just play any other first person creator game? Where link is just removed. Its literally a boring and not actually versatile crafting game with link floating infront of the object youre just point and clicking on. Which is also lazy.
Like put link on your computer wallpaper and then drag and drop something with your mouse. Link doesnt even have to be there for the game.
And if you compare the building to any other building game it absolutely sucks.

I also prefer towers in botw over totk for many of the reasons you mentioned but the first thing I noticed missing a lot from botw was being able to use the towers to get a better lay of the land and plan out where you want you want to go next. Being shot up in there air is cool and it gives you a lot of height to easily glide wherever. But you end up having to quickly decide which direction you wanna start diving towards as you start falling closer to the ground it’s hard to really gauge where things are that high up too. Fast traveling to a tower in botw and chilling there while looking out at the landscape is just the perfect vibe and atmosphere and that experience is mostly absent in totk.

Yeah you seen all this before hurry up to the water temple. Even if you screwed around you had this feeling that you had to keep moving . Botw. Felt slower. You could take things in slower and at your pace. And the tower is the perfect example of that.

To me, the main problem with totk would be that its just that the surface world isnt so interesting to explore anymore. I mean in botw there was the constant threat of being sniped by guardians, encountering a hinox or lynel but in tears of the kingdom the map is soo large and with the abilities it feels like there's too much yet too little to do.
In botw I climbed and made the treck through the mountain path to zora's domain but in totk I just fucking glided over everything with rockets, rewind, wings and towers. I don't get the same feeling travelling in totk (even on the ground, on horseback) unlike botw where the land is massive but still interesting and just small enough that you can get around anywhere in a small amount of time.
It might just be a 'me', problem but I liked botw because of its world that didn't have the issues that I usually have with open world games. Totk reintroduced these problems for me.

I think personally I was disappointed at how similar the games are. The plot is just completely recycled. Most of the enemies are the same and most of the game play is the same. The combat is pretty uninteresting because I’ve already killed a million goblins lizards and lynels in botw.

They could've done so much more with Riju, Buliara and the rest of the Gerudo considering how Ganondorf is a Gerudo.
Riju is 18 by the time it got to Tears of The Kingdom. Her bodyguard is Buliara who is the best Gerudo warrior, and who no doubt trained Riju. And yet the first scene we see of Riju in Tears of The Kingdom is her missing a target by a country mile.
It just leaves me thinking that the Champions were already spirits - why couldn't they have just made them the Sages? I like the Sages, but the only Sage I thought to be somewhat competent is Sidon, and I still don't understand why Tullin is a Sage and Teba isn’t. Riju is in the leadership position in Gerudo Town, and yet she's a Sage, so the argument of 'Teba is now the Chief of the Rito' doesn't hold up that well, hell, Sidon became King of The Zora so I don’t see how Teba couldn't have been the Sage.

Also, in regard to Rauru - instead of cutscenes in dragon tears that are likely watched out of order - instead, Nintendo should've gone the extra mile and had a playable Zelda in these segments. It would've been so cool to see Zelda's power grow under the training of the Zonai, whilst getting to use her to battle enemies in the past.

I am a legend of Zelda fan for almost 20 years now. My favourite game was always A link to the past, because I loved the fact that exploration was more important than the story. Newer games like twilight princess, spirit tracks and skyward sword were still great games, but they had way to much story and were to linear for me. Thats why I adored breath of the wild so much. Finally it was a game that went back to the routes and put more focus on exploration and kept the story simple.
I was looking foreward so much for tears of the kingdom. Now I own it and must say, I am very much dissappointed. I don't want to cheat the game with creativity. I don't want dull and annoying sidequests that consist of mending things together. I just want to walk around the world, enjoy the landscape, fight some bosses and find some secrets from time to time. I really have trouble finishing tears of the kingdom. I am bored with this game so much....

You're not alone! I similarly think BotW was the better game, and agree with near all your arguments.
The biggest sticking point for me wasn't the shrines, though, it was the story. Personally I think TotK's story is better _in concept_ but the execution was just fumbled so badly (like everything to do with the past and present sages, how easy it was to accidentally do something out of order and eff up the story for yourself, and how one dimensional and underexplored Ganondorf was) that it dragged the entire experience down for me. BotW's story was much simpler, but at least I felt like there was actual care given to all of its characters.
The dungeons were another biggie. Visually they were much more interesting than BotW's, but mechanically? They were braindead easy. Absolutely zero challenge at all. I'd rather take a visually boring puzzle that actually makes me think about its solutions than what TotK's gave us. The shrines were just an echo of this problem for me; similarly too easy and seemingly less inspired on the whole.
And finally, the world of TotK just didn't do enough for me. With the overworld being largely the same as BotW's, that left only the depths, sky islands, and various caves and wells to spice things up. But the depths were empty drab wastelands, the sky islands repetitive with the majority of its puzzles and layouts, and the caves/wells nearly entirely copy-paste. It was exciting for the first few hours, then got dull af. I really wish they had made more of an effort to include unique environmental story telling with these areas. The lack of discoverable lore was one of my biggest gripes with BotW, and they somehow had even less of it in TotK.
Ofc that's not to say TotK didn't have some areas it excelled in -- the enemy variety, for example, was much, much improved; the weapon combining alleviated many of the weapon breaking frustrations from the first game; and ascend is hands down like my favorite ability in any game ever! But, just.... how the overwhelming majority of people view TotK as better in nigh every way just completely flabbergasts me lol. So it's nice to stumble upon someone who finally feels much the same as I do!
Phew, I didn't mean for this comment to get so long but I guess I just had a lot to get off my chest about the game LOL!

The story is literally the opposite. Breath of the wild is better in concept but TOTK had significantly better execution. Breath of the wild basically didn’t have a story because of how disconnected it was. The devs were just paranoid of anything linear. I think 3 of the memories are directly connected to each other, and the king and impa are the only other sources of story. Champion’s ballad expanded on it well, but that only made the story passable compared to genuine garbage. Tears of the kingdom got the perfect balance of linearity and freedom. There’s a clear-cut order, but you don’t have to take it if you don’t care. Regardless, the payoff stays the same so long as you get them all.

Imo the shrine system in totk is very clunky and redundant because of it being a sequel. The game devs try so hard to make it different from botw by putting them in different areas and giving it different designs but they got very boring very quickly and often were inconvenient warp points in all the villages. When I first played botw, I was so excited about finding a shrine and would get it done immediately. That kind of fizzled out so I do them a lot less when I replay it, so seeing them again in totk when I was expecting something new was disappointing. Since the shrines are new in game, there’s not many interesting things that can be done with them since botw had established lore about them way before links time. There are no ancient songs or fun gimmicks to activate them, and the reward of lights of blessings wasn’t exactly the most incentivizing.
Personally I think totk could’ve been a much better game if they stopped the shrine system completely and focused on making larger more linear focused dungeons. As well as more than just the four regional ones. A game that followed 7-8 large dungeons would’ve made the game feel longer and been richer in story. Anyways, great video! You’re very entertaining to listen to.

Breath absolutely nailed the atmosphere. It really felt like a land swept up in the lingering effects of an almighty cataclysm, a great disaster that brought a once mighty nation to its knees. It felt like the world was holding its breath, bracing for the next eruption. The danger was clear and imminent, but not immediate. You could drag your feet and do side activities, and in fact, you’re encouraged to, as many of them are relevant to the main goal. There’s important stuff to do, but there’s no rush. Zelda is holding down the fort for us. Saving the world can wait. For now…
Tears, on the other hand, feels all kinds of weird. There’s a disconnect between the story and gameplay that wasn’t there in Breath. On the one hand, Ganondorf is back. Remember that massive earth-shattering calamity from last time? Yeah, that was just a malignant ooze that had been passively seeping out of this guy. Now he’s back in full, stronger than he has ever been before, there’s nothing holding him back like last time, and Hyrule is absolutely screwed. He could strike at literally any time. What should we do?
    “Yeehaw, go carts go VROOOOM!”
    “Yahaha! I found you!”
“Yes, I will visit every stable to investigate rumors of mysterious voices in the night and the illustrious All-Clucking Cucoo.”
“Not to worry! I’d be happy to provide for you a picture of a Goron in a hot spring. I’ll be back in a few days.”
“Today, I do believe I shall take some time to sort out the matter of Hateno’s mayoral election.”
These things may be interesting, but they feel so out of place. The main story demands immediate action, except it doesn’t because our all powerful villain is just chilling down in a pit for every second of it. If Ganon does literally anything at all before we decide we’re done building hover bikes and death robots, it’s game over. It’s like Fallout 4 again, where my baby gets kidnapped and then hours later, I’m building a house and planning out my farm.
The distractions make sense in Breath. They absolutely do not in Tears. There’s a sense of urgency that is completely at odds with the entire concept of the game. And I think that’s the main reason why I couldn’t get into the sequel like I could the first game. That, and Ultrahand breaks the game to the point where I completely lost interest in solving any puzzles. But that’s another rant.

I had similar thoughts, one thing was it was almost like a slap in the face for botw fans who went into totk and half the npcs forgot you somehow, the entire vibe felt off, like this game is a sequel, tell us what happened to all the sheikah stuff, where did all the underground/above ground sheikah shrines go, so much didnt add up it was weird, also the great plateau was objectively better than the great sky island, also upgrading and grinding in totk is way more grindy and busy work its a real shame. Still a great game but I replayed botw 4 times since my first one on wii u and 3 times on switch vs totk ill probs never play it again even though I liked it.

There is no tension in the system or skill. Link isnt doing it. Its a medieval game and you have a green lanterns ring. Are you ever gunna use the other tools? No. Breath of the wild is simple and beautiful and foreboding and clean. Tears is like "eh do what you want" which is only fun a couple times. Like a game with unlimited cheat codes. Limitations and getting around them are what makes a game fun. Ironically having so many options in tears youre really just gunna do the one most easy and convenient thing. Theres not a sense of growth in your skill. And you arent a better gamer. Youre not mastering the glider. Youre gluing a fan on a stick and just flying there. It wouldnt be so bad if you could only do the ultrahand once a day for like 60 seconds.

The main reason why I prefer BotW is that everything you explored was new. Sure, if you’re playing TotK first it’ll all feel new, but BotW just felt way more atmospheric than TotK. Plus, the world building in BotW was far more interesting and less confusing than TotK, despite the ladder giving us answers to many lore questions from BotW. How do you screw that up? BotW was an incredible experience I had when first playing it that I’ll never forget, whereas TotK was a game that was just fun for a while. TotK is also way too repetitive. From the skies, to the depths, to the caves, to the wells, and so much more that was very lacking in variety. BotW understood the concept of “Less is more”

Totally agree. TotK felt like a boring, extensive, never-ending chore. The subterranean portion felt very one note in all directions. I didn't even go through it all. Like you, there was no need to actually explore on foot when you could just shoot up into the sky and glide to wherever you want to go precisely. I liked the sky lands a little more than the subterranean portions. I also don't care to sit there and build stuff or even fuse things, to be honest. To me, it breaks up the flow of the game. I like the feel of the rugged apocalyptic land where sometimes i have to pick up the nearest sword and just start fighting with that. I'm not going through menus fusing for attack power, I'm just fighting with what i got. I don't care for vehicles; the Zonai tech completely eliminated any fun in catching a horse, hoping that you caught a great horse.
I could go on. I did spend 210 hours in TotK. I enjoyed it overall. It is a good game. But i sprinted through the last 30 hours to just beat the game and move on. I went back to BotW last night in Master Mode, and honestly, i got immediately lost in it again. It's so immersive. The towers make way more sense. They distill the information of the land into a drop of fluid that gets absorbed into the slate. That's a neat concept. In TotK, you got shot up into the sky on a tether, pointing a camera around to capture the images of the land to form the map? Idk. Seemed silly and archaic by comparison.

I very much agree that the ultrahand ability was way overutilized in shrines. I didn't like ultrahand much either, it was too clunky and time consuming, and building stuff isn't what I'm looking for in Zelda games. It felt like damn near every shrine was just building shit that I didn't want to build. The building in shrines was so boring and tedious, and even in the overworld, I found it boring and tedious. I know a lot of players got super creative with ultrahand and had a lot of fun building stuff, but that's just not what I play Zelda games for. If I wanted that, I'd just play a game that's specifically made for that. It's cool for the people who want to use it, but for those who don't, it just made the game an unpleasant experience to force us to use it not only in shrines, but also to traverse parts of the world, especially in the sky. It made the already underwhelming sky islands even worse because not only is there nearly nothing to do up there, but I'm forced to use a mechanic that I heavily dislike just to move between them. What made this even worse is that a lot of the building materials, especially the wings, disappear after a short amount of time, making sky traversal even more of a pain. And for what reason? Making the materials disappear doesnt add a fun challenge or any worth as mechanic at all. It just pisses me, and many other players off. I wouldnt say that the ultrahand mechanic shouldn't exist, but it shouldn't have been forced on the player so much. I personally felt that it took away a lot of the freedom that the developers supposedly want the players to have.

Just finished watching your video, I also think BOTW is better. TOTK is a great game, and I do think there are a few better things, like the building weapons mechanic, I do like that a lot more than the weapons I find in BOTW, but generally, I think almost everything in BOTW is superior.
One of the things I don't like is the sages, I don't even mind the character, I think they're cool, like, I like there personalities, but the mechanics itself it's terrible, having to go after them and click A is very jenky, the abilities that they provide are useless, Riju and Yonobu are essentially just bombs, on BOTW they were a lot more simple to activate, and also a lot more powerful, every champion power totally changed the gameplay, TOTK they are very mediocre and uncreative.
The shrines and exploration on BOTW is also so much better, you had some really memorable quests to find, like helping to build terrey town, or the dragon on the mountain that you help, BOTW also had some locations specially made for the shrine, like the two ring rocks, or that windy place near the ocean, but also, the shrines on BOTW was actually a puzzle you had to solve, most of the TOTK the shrines are essentially "build something to get to the end", and that's so boring, they also are just in random places on the map, the maps and shrines don't connect anymore, TOTK don't have any shrine or side quests that are actually memorable, the quests in TOTK are just a bunch of NPCs asking for simple favors, they are not fun as BOTW, the deaphs are also so disappointing, it's just two dungeons and master kogah fight, there literally 3 missions in the entire deaphs, the rest of it, it's just copy and past enemies.
BOTW was smaller, but at least it had more variety of missions.
I don't like the story of BOTW That much, but at least finding the memories made sense in BOTW, also they were fun to find, you actually had to explore the map to find it, the "memories" in TOTK doesn't make any sense, also finding them it's just kinda pointless, since they are just a big mark point on the map.
I also think the bosses in BOTW are better, I mean, visually they suck, but at least they actually attack you, the fight is actually challenging, TOTK bosses are visually better, but they don't attack you, they just stand there waiting for you to attack them, it's ao silly.
anyway, I had fun with TOTK, but I truly don't understand people that find TOTK a better game.

I do like the one from spirit temple, I think that one was very fun, but the rest of them, I don't know.
BOTW felt more creative for me, the one from Gerudo for example, he had super speed, then you had to use the metal things to electrocute him, he also had shock on his shield and weapon at some point, it felt more like a Battle I think, TOTK bosses can be fun, but I though it was too easy.

Have you ever had a chance to play The Last Story? It's another Mistwalker Studio game, with brilliant characters and one of the most natural and believable love stories in all of gaming. It was one of the three games brought to the US during Operation Rainfall, and as a late generation Wii game, really pushed the boundaries of what the system could do. Enjoyed the video! i am one who personally likes both games, my pet peeve is that with the sages in tears of the kingdom had no character, they wore masks and barely had a backstory unlike daruk, mipha, urbosa and rivali. i still feel like the dungeons aren't the best in breath of the wild but if you think about it tears has the same kind of loop, where you use the characters power on a switch and it unlocks a part, it just feels almost the same as botw, i will say that tears of the kingdom had better bosses though. My other issue with tears is that the sky does not have as much content as it should have, like most the islands are small and are just shrine quests. and the depths are okay but it is a bit repetitive and there are sometimes where its just straight walking ahead with nothing interesting in your way. i also dislike how the tears of the kingdom "tutorial" area takes like a couple hours to get through, in breath of the wild it could take a couple hours but it was about half an hour to an hour, witch was great but tears of the kingdoms tutorial kinda bored me, and makes me not want to make anothe save file for the reson that it is a bit longer than i feel it should be. dont get me wrong i love tears of the kingdom, and breath of the wild both as much as each other but i feel breath of the wild is stil a great experience for anyone who hasnt played botw and only played totk. anyways this was a huge read so i will finish it here, i coud talk for hours about my opinions on both games, because i love them both dearly and cannot get enough. anyways loved the video, agreed with some stuff, but honestly no hate towards totk i just think botw did some amazing things that tears of the kingdom hasnt matched to but yeah, so please anyone reading this don't reply with hate comments i love both games in their own ways, i am just putting my opinion out there.

I think totk is objectively better but I have more of an emotional connection to botw. Tears of the Kingdom is probably more fun with loads of mechanics/features distractions whereas botw is more of a contemplative immersive experience. Atmosphere was a central theme of botw as the title suggests. I see totk as basically botw part 2 - part 1 was about atmosphere and experiencing the world. Part 2 more focused on filling that world with gameplay mechanics. I agree with you about the divine beast themes - some of the best compositions in a Zelda game.

I’m sorry but music is going to TOTK, colgera, Intro theme, ganon battle, demon dragon battle, corrupted rito village, diving into the wind temple, enemy theme, and so much more DESTROYS the music in botw. I’m not shaming on your opinion but the dungeons in TOTK are soooooo much better then botw in my opinion, instead of the same dungeon with the same music repeated over and over again. You have different boss battles, different music, different and slightly better puzzles, and different and bigger areas. Take the lightning temple, that is better then all divine beasts combined in my opinion. Even if totk dungeons were reskins of divine beasts, doesn’t that mean their better? Better atmosphere, I give botw dungeons a 5, and totk a 7 because botw did have the worst dungeons, and even though totk are similar, totk still improves on them, entering the temples are soooo much better in totk then botw as well. Climbing higher and higher for the wind temple, defending and figuring out tri force puzzles for the lightning temple, the forgotten water works for the zora temple really nailed the abandoned feel and swimming up to the sky’s was so cool, and riding the plane to take down those death mountain monsters felt so fun. You can’t have the proving ground shrines compared the the master trial DLC, it’s a dlc and it has way more purpose then a simple little shrine you can enter along your way, that’s just not equal ranking

So interestingly there's some overlap between what we didn't like, but not all that much.
I think you did a great job arguing your points and putting everything forward in a clear and concise way (an hour may not seem consice but you could talk for days about this game, so summarising everything in an hour is no small feat).
My issues with the game are very fundamental, but I'd generally summarise them as mostly stemming from the exploration. You talked a fair bit about the world and all that, but for me, the exploration in ToTK compared to BoTW is where it fundamentally falls apart. Nintendo re-using the overworld from BoTW was a very bold decision, and I don't think it paid off, because I spent most of my time with the game feeling underwhelmed that I was simply re-exploring something I had already seen with no changes. I found the sky islands and the depths to be largely disappointing, albeit with some noteable highlights - they were a major case of diminishing returns, leaving a good first impression but after a while feeling extremely repetitive and uninpsired. But I think my main issue is the exploration rewards. If we're being forced to re-explore so much of the same areas, we should at least get something good out of it. But instead, when I explored, whether it be on the surface, in the sky, or in the depths, the reward was almost always underwhelming: a crappy Amiibo costume that I never cared about 6 years ago when BoTW came out and care even less about now.
There's a lot of other elements you raise - some things I agree with, others I disagree with, as you'd expect.
In general though, I think you did a great job. Honestly I was surprised when you said you were in high school because I assumed you were older; you come across very well. You say you were twelve when you first played BoTW. I was in my last year of university - which makes be feel very old! But I think to put your thoughts across so well at such a young age is really impressive, and I think you could have a great future ahead for you if you choose to go down that sort of path.

    • @rpgranked
      @rpgranked  Před 9 měsíci

      Haha nice!
Yeah it was pretty underwhelming. I had the same problem with the diminishing returns, I tried not to talk about that too much in the video because 1) I could go on forever about that and 2) I didn't want to make TOTK fans hate me more than they already do... hahaha. I KNOW it was always rehashed costumes that had the same fundamental functions and looked basically the same! Did love finding the Biggoron Sword and the Sea-Breeze Boomerang, though, those were my two favorite weapons in the game lol. Yeah, I liked finding the Sage's Wills in the Sky Islands, and there were like 3-4 good islands, but for the most part, they were just copy-pasted archipelagos. And the depths had the two temples, which was cool, a few good chests, the fun coliseums, and the really cool Yiga sidequests, and I liked that the Lightroots corresponded with the shrines to tell you were they were if you were stumped, but otherwise? The depths was bland. I did like the Depths better than the Sky though, for better of for worse.

  • @Beefnhammer

I haven't made up my mind yet on which I prefer, but there a decent chance I'll end up agreeing that BOTW is the overall better game. The agrument that TOTK makes BOTW obsolete and there's no reason to go back to it is complete nonsense. Even though they take place in the same Hyrule, the 2 games are very different from a design perspective. I'm in total agreement with you that BOTW's shrines are much better, and that the divine beasts are way more interesting and more fun to play than TOTK's "dungeons". But TOTK did make some serious improvement on certain things that are hard to ignore, like the fuse ability for weapons and having significantly better boss battles. It's a tough call for me, but I think I lean very slightly in favor of BOTW these days.

@@rpgrankedIn my humble opinion multiple playthroughs of Undertale are kind of required to get the full experience, personally I find the most fulfilling order to be Neutral -> True Pacifist -> Genocide (with genocide being optional as it is very grindy, is narratively very grim and a major tonal shift but contains the two hardest and most epic bosses in the game). The Pacifist and Genocide routes both serve as proper conclusions to the game's story but in tonally opposite ways, unfortunately the fact that if you kill even one monster in the neutral route you have to play the entire game again for the true pacifist ending is one of the game's biggest weaknesses, following the true pacifist ending unlocks a lot of end game content which were among the best and most memorable moments in the game for me. I heavily, heavily recommend you revisit Undertale with True Pacifist in mind, you will find new story encounters with some of the main characters that really flesh them out, a new and very thematically interesting area and a new final boss.

    @MABG19981130 Před 9 měsíci +3

I disagree, totk made so many good improvements that i simply cant see myself going back to botw for anything other than the story. The shrines feel a lot more interesting in totk, a lot of the gimiky shrines in botw were more tedious than fun, especially the comabt ones. Yes you could just cheese the shrines with ultrahand or acend, but those eureka moments where you figure out what the devs wanted you to do or the shrine teaches you a new way to use a mechanic, it just feels a lot more satisfying than in botw. The divine beasts are also not as interesting themselves outside of the lore aspect as the new dungeons in totk, the bosses were a lot more colorful and needed you to use your new pal in one way, similar to how in previous games youd get a dungeon item and use that item to defeat the dungeon boss, but i will say that using the sages can be annoying because they can also just run away from you when you want to use them.
Overall, i believe totk is just better, tho perhaps because i like the freedom it provides to let me do whatever i want with the powers of fuse, and i also enjoy just creating dumb contraptions and sending koroks flying. Im not trying to crap on your oppinion, i just disagree. Keep having fun! Thats what games are all about!

  • @Verotica

totk was amazing, It filled in many of the plot holes in the botw lore. even if they have less shrines they added a whole underground to explore, making totks map 2x the size of botw. the mystery of shooting brightbloom seeds into pitch darkness lighting it up, finding all sorts of goodies and terrifying creatures is part of whats fun about it. You could say ultra hand is just a copy of magnesis but I disagree, you can fuse and create any objects putting together crazy zonai devices and creating clever ways to solve your problems, I personally feel its an upgraded magnesis. Ultrahand was exaclty what they were going for in botw but failed. And then theres fuse, you can basically create fire, electric cryo and bomb arrows at any time, also implicating a bunch of new creative ways to defeat your enemies. Theres so much more creative freedom now that I wished we had in botw.

    • @rpgranked
      @rpgranked  Před 9 měsíci

Oh I totally agree!! I loved fuse, and I think Ultrahand is objectively so much better than magnesis. I just felt like there was *too* much Ultrahand for me, because I'm more of a one and done kinda guy, not an abstract building type of guy. I tried to stress that Ultrahand was objectively awesome haha, hopefully that came through 😁
Also Fuse was so so so amazing. That's why I gave the combat a 10/10 because I adored that. Ultrahand is awesome, but in the end, I felt like BOTW was more puzzle-centric, and TOTK had a lot of building... Which is great, but just not really for me.

I honestly think ToTK is better due to many new, fresh mechanics. However BoTW was the first game I 100%ed (including Koroks) and I loved it, both games should be treated as one because ToTK could start directly after you end the BoTW story, that's how faithful of a sequel it is. Amazing games in their own right, both having some issues but "some issues" can't be enough to call either of them bad.
ToTK's mechanics and characters excel anything BoTW could do, however the first game had a more depressing story of lost champions making it more emotional almost objectively. ToTK's Hyrule founding story is dark and sad but the hero losing his friends makes BoTW stand out more to me.
