    As a Drukhari player, I would maybe bump us down to Should be OK. We have a fantastic combat patrol it's true but we have a lot of core units which are resin and now out of production. Luckily, they were all models most people kitbashed and Drukhair as an army really leans well into kitbashing. You can make so many extra characters and units just from the bodies you get off the transports. And you have a great community of people who can point you to what works best for kitbashing. I think you'll have a good time but with the caveat of if you're willing to kitbash

      @IBPaintsppp-wt5ou Před 3 měsíci +3

      I'll add that flight stands, especially for the ravager/raiders, are a struggle that mainly Eldar and Drukhari have.
      Yep, Drukhari has one of the highest percent out of production/fine cast models. It has models like the grotesques, beast pack, and court of the archon that you have to 3D print or kitbash. This is a lot of fun, but it means that it's nearly impossible to have an all GW model Drukhari army which is a problem, I think, for GW tournaments
      Also Drukhari is more of a horde army which most people don't realize when starting, even if they aren't supposed to be. I have more of a horde collection, but it comes out to 190 miniatures for 4,000 points which feels as horde-y as some tyrranid or ork collections.
      And yes Drukhari is a more expensive army. Poorhammer ranked them the 5th most expensive army when not considering bundles (1.94 points per dollar).
      I'd put Drukhari as tough choice, but I know some people would consider it easier. I'm sure I feel that way in part because Drukhari was my first army. I think Drukhari is a faction that you should go all in on. It's a tough army to put together and fully appreciate when it's one of 3 work in progress armies.
      And yet Drukhari is my favorite army. Their aesthetics, lore, customization, and variety are absolutely incredible.

      @printandplaygamer7134 Před 3 měsíci

      @@NewbHammer40K Apart from the cost-per-point situation, Votann is a pretty good beginner faction.They are reasonably well-balanced against the competition, and although Votann has a couple of standout units, none of the small handful of choices available are actually *bad*--they're all usable, so there really aren't any traps. They are a tad expensive, though, as there isn't much of a secondary market yet, and their rules and points make them a bit less elite than you'd expect, given that their battleline troops are wearing power armor. The holiday box was an excellent value, if you can find it; the Combat Patrol is fine, but you really only want one box, since the Berserkers it comes with are probably the single least-useful unit in the faction right now. Votann are also pretty easy to paint--since they are essentially just short space marines, you can apply pretty much all the jillions of how-to-paint-space-marines-fast tutorials to them.

A good blend of rules, painting difficulty, rule of cool, sub-factions, and personal taste all rolled in. A quick note for Imperial Guard. The Death Corps of Krieg are supposed to be getting a whole new plastic range before the end of the year to add to the Kill Team box they got last year so probably a new combat patrol themed around them & with luck a christmas battle box too which would make a solid start to the army. All the vehicles currently useable by guard will be useable by Krieg. You could also use the new 30k Solar Auxilla as your own unique guard faction.

    Custodes are definitely not made for beginners. This is a massive mistake that people make with them trying to tell beginners to create a Custodes army as their first. Custodes require a vast amount of game knowledge of every other army to make them work. Beginners should start with a medium-sized army like Tau, Grey Knights, or Astartes. Necrons are also far too complicated due to the horde and synergy aspects that they have which can make things complicated due to having to remember a lot of rules. Grey Knights are by far one of the simplest armies to learn in 40K because of the stream-lined nature in which they play as they have certain buffs for certain situations of which is very easy to remember as each unit does a different thing so there's no confusion as to what unit does what.

    I started with World Eaters because I thought they looked cool lol. I almost picked Chaos Daemons because you can use them in both AoS and 40k (and sometimes have my regrets), plus they're very customizable. World Eaters were just a little cooler to me. They're just not as beginner friendly due to lack of shooting, and I've had a problem finding models and learning how they play.
    I'd honestly put Daemons MUCH higher on the list simply for the AoS compatability. That's a HUGE selling point for me!

      If you want a more elite army, space marines are a good choice. Any of the sub factions would be good, just maybe don’t pick imperial fists or white scars because yellow and white are the most difficult colors to paint.
      Grey Knights are even more elite. Custodes too. But they you get to the issue of each time something dies, it’s a good chunk of your army.
      My recs would be based on whether you’re interested in imperium, chaos or xenos.
      Imperium: Space marines (dark angles, ultramarines, blood angels).
      Chaos: Death guard
      Xenos: Tau or Aeldari

    As a Guard player, I do have to disagree. Get three combat patrol boxes and you are sorted. A leman russ or two or a rogal dorn and you can pack a punch they are super easy to play and understand the basics of them and when you are confident enough/remember adding the orders as well really makes them really fun. Painting them is great as well as you can choose whatever colour scheme you want. If you wanna play Krieg you do need to buy the combat patrols which is annoying but they are definitely not a tough choice

    It all depends: Do you want afordable army or do you want army, that is easy to play ? Afordable right now are Tyranids, for example (thanks to Leviathan box), but its not realy faction for new players, as its hard to play. Astra Militarum is easy to play and if you want, you can field just 5 tanks into 1000pts army and be competitive. It wont win you tournament, but thats not for new players anyway. Ultramarines (Or space marines in general, not special chapter) area not that hard to play and as being poster boys of WH40k they quite cheap.
    but MOST IMPORTANT RULE:
    Go for the army you like by lore or view or by units. It does not matter, that Adeptus Mechanicus are f terrible, if you like technomancer look, go for it.For a friendly games its always good. Building own army and creating connection with it, thats 75% of whole warhammer gaming.

I'm a returning player from late 5th/beginning of 6th edition and Tau was an interesting army to start as they weren't good in 5th, but skyrocketed into power when 6th edition came in. Now I plan to play Thousand Sons after I play some games from the Eldlitch Omens set since my Brother wanted to play Aeldari.
    Great to see both are okay starting points, for me Thousands Sons shouldn't be a problem so it would be in the "Good time with playing this faction" tier. Loved the Astra Mil summary, "they're just people". This is also why I like Black Legion as while on Cadia they were obv diametrically opposed, the only real difference is that Astra Mil are ignorant to the larger evils perpetrated by the imperium war machine as well as the evils of deep space whereas the Black Legion have been opened to these evils and have become twisted by these truths. It makes for such an awesome conflict where there are no bad people, just people taken advantage of by larger powers. Just makes for such compelling storytelling. I got into warhammer because of drukhari and the only big complaint I will give the new player experience for drukhari are A) they are difficult to pilot as beginners because they are very very frail and can die from being looked at funny, B) They are covered in spikey bits so they look cool but there is a good chance they will draw blood while being assembled and can have things break or bend easily. C) GW likes to ignore us so dont expect new toys like ever but as a new player that shouldnt be a problem too much but most of our range is a decade or older.

    I think Custodes are a trap if you are brand new to the game. Few models to pain/assemble/buy, sure. Mostly single phase, sure.
    But it is a skew army, which has a very low allowance of mistakes (on this level -a- mistake can lose you around 400 points of models, one fifth of your army even) once you get to a higher level (aka no longer a beginner), which is a transition I saw many fail to make. Once everyone knows what they are doing, the high lethality for shooting, coupled with low number of models and being rather CP starved means that in order to consistently win games (and not just in the faceroll matchups) you will need to develop an idiot-savant esque undertanding of the rules, focusing on threat assessment (and understanding your own expected output), lot of positioning and a very well thought out secondary plan. This is coupled with a high-variance army meaning it is more likely than usual for luck to significantly swing games.
    I agree with most of the rest though. But I strongly feel that this is just something people keep repeating a lot without thinking too much about it. For example, and don't think this personally, but in this video apart from the "good deal" it is not exactly explained -why- this would be a good army for a beginner to *learn warhammer* (as that is ultimately what a good beginner army is). What I outlined above *are* all useful skills, but this army really thinks differently about them than others.
    Really do contrast it with Necrons or Spess Muhreens. Those are nice, rounded out armies which can do a lot of different things, and have a wider range of units.
    Number of models and price point shouldn't be such a hyperfocus in my book, if we talk about what is truly good for a new player.

    • @NewbHammer40K
      @NewbHammer40K  Před 3 měsíci

      Some other people have also pointed this out. I think it’s a good point but from the few beginners that I have met, they really do put number of models to paint and price above game play. They trust that they’ll learn the rules eventually but to get into the hobbying side of things they want it to be simplified.
      If I met someone who already had experience with model making and just wanted a rec for an army that they could learn the game with, I probably wouldn’t recommend custodes.
      Good point though and thanks for sharing!

    I would differ with the take on genstealers. I know you mentioned how good the combat patrol is, but it is really good enough to be in great place to start. 3 of them will get you around 1980 pts, which is a feature not other combat patrol can do, specially with a variety of units where all of them are playable and important and not have something weird as 3 rhinos for example, as they also come with variants for the truck and the acolytes. but even 30 acolytes and 3 rockgrinders are very solid, without even mentioning that each truck has models that you can kitbash into almost all of the characters.

    custodes get shoved in the beginners section of every video like this and i gotta say i disagree. main reason being, when so many of your points are condensed into a few bricks of infantry, you feel every mistake big time. But on the table i think they can be a bit unforgiving and are certainly hard to just play on the fly and react to whatever the board state is.
